Abstract
In the present study, a novel and unconventional two-dimensional (2D) material with Dirac electronic features has been designed using sulflower with the help of density functional theory methods and first principles calculations. This 2D material comprises of hetero atoms (C, S) and belongs to the tetragonal lattice with P4 /nmm space group. Scrutiny of the results show that the 2D nanosheet exhibits a nanoporous wave-like geometrical structure. Quantum molecular dynamics simulations and phonon mode analysis emphasize the dynamical and thermal stability. The novel 2D nanosheet is an auxetic material with an anisotropy in the in-plane mechanical properties. Both composition and geometrical features are completely different from the conditions necessary for the formation of Dirac cones in graphene. However, the presence of semi-metallic nature, linear band dispersion relation, massive fermions and massless Dirac fermions are observed in the novel 2D nanosheet. The massless Dirac fermions exhibit highly isotropic Fermi velocities (vf =0.68×106 m/s) along all crystallographic directions. The zero-band gap semi metallic features of the novel 2D nanosheet are perturbative to the electric field and external strain.

Abstract
This study investigated the relationship of electronic properties with some structural parameters of two circulene classes: Sulflowers and Oxiflowers. It is found that correlations between the HOMO-LUMO gap and some electronic properties of these circulenes are opposite to those of linear conjugated structures. Moreover, a new hybrid molecule, called an Oxisulflower, is proposed to be a potential structure for synthesizing as Sulflower. Also, a brand-new descriptor, namely, the "degree of non-planarity", is evaluated with excellent correlations with the HOMO-LUMO gap of molecules in Oxiflower and Sulflower classes. The correlations have also shown that the steric characteristic of a structure can be controlled to modulate its band gap for studying the prediction science of the electronic properties in developing organic semiconductors.

Abstract
A soluble, green-blue fluorescent, π-extended azatrioxa[8]circulene was synthesized by oxidative condensation of a 3,6-dihydroxycarbazole and 1,4-anthraquinone by using benzofuran scaffolding. This is the first circulene to incorporate anthracene within its carbon framework. Solvent-dependent fluorescence and bright green electroluminescence accompanied by excimer emission are the key optical properties of this material. The presence of sliding π-stacked columns in the single crystal of dianthracenylazatrioxa[8]circulene is found to cause a very high electron-hopping rate, thus making this material a promising n-type organic semiconductor with an electron mobility predicted to be around 2.26 cm2 V-1 s-1 . The best organic light-emitting diode (OLED) device based on the dianthracenylazatrioxa[8]circulene fluorescent emitter has a brightness of around 16 000 Cd m-2 and an external quantum efficiency of 3.3 %. Quantum dot-based OLEDs were fabricated by using dianthracenylazatrioxa[8]circulene as a host matrix material.

Abstract
Quadruply BN-fused tetrathia[8]circulenes were synthesized through four-fold electrophilic borylation. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the BN-fused tetrathia[8]circulene with peripheral phenyl groups exhibits crystal polymorphism, in which the circulene core adopts both planar and saddle conformations in the solid state. The experimental and theoretical studies revealed that the weaker aromaticity of azaborine compared with benzene renders the flexibility of the BN-fused tetrathia[8]circulenes.

Abstract
Self-assembly of π-conjugated molecules in solution generally occurs owing to either an enthalpic or an entropic gain; however, designing π-conjugated systems that simultaneously exhibit enthalpically and entropically favorable self-assembly behavior is challenging. Herein, the self-assembly behavior of tetraazatetrathia[8]circulenes is disclosed, which is driven by both enthalpy and entropy. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated that molecules of these tetraazatetrathia[8]circulenes form face-to-face stacked dimers with a 1D columnar structure owing to the circularly arranged dipole moments. Importantly, concentration- and temperature-dependent 1 H NMR spectra revealed that the formation of self-assemblies of tetraazatetrathia[8]circulenes in chloroform and methanol is favored by both enthalpic and entropic factors. The unique association behavior is due to the presence of sp2 -hybridized nitrogen atoms, which weakly coordinate to the hydrogen atoms of these solvents and reduce the π-electron density of the circulene cores.

Abstract
Curved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons exhibit intriguing properties, but their flexible and dynamic nature is often considered to be unfavorable for achieving excellent emission properties. In this study, we prepared tetrathia[8]circulene octaoxides that adopt a negatively curved conformation. We found that these molecules exhibit aggregation-induced emission (AIE) that originates from the restriction of the dynamic motion of their saddle-shaped π-frameworks in the solid and aggregated states.

Abstract
The density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT methods have been used to investigate the persulfurated coronene (PSC) and its chalcogenide analogues (POC and PSeC), derived from the substitution of sulfur, oxygen, and selenium for all hydrogen atoms in coronene, respectively. The presence of peripheral S-S in PSC results in a σ-type lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and the dark low-lying states (S1 ∼ S15). The peripheral S-S bond is responsible for its electron capture, which maintains a planar configuration of the singly and doubly negative-charged PSC. POC is predicted to have the most stable saddle-shaped structure with the C═O group, and its bowl-shaped isomer with the O-O moiety is less stable by 279.2 kcal/mol energetically. PSeC has similar electronic and structural features with PSC, but its dimer is predicted to have much better hole mobility, compared to PSC. The present results indicate that the chalcogenide substitution at the periphery of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons may remarkably change their electronic and spectroscopic properties as well as the carrier transport behavior of their molecular materials.

Abstract
Abstract
A computational study using density functional theory is reported for selected model aza[n]circulenes (n = 6, 7, 8 and 9) and their derivatives consisting of pyrrole and benzene units. Local aromaticity of central rings was discussed and analyzed using theoretical structural indices. Depending on their molecular structures, energies of the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals change from –5.23 eV to –4.08 eV and from –1.97 eV to –0.41 eV, respectively. Based on B3LYP calculated optimal geometries, electronic structure of molecules and their charge transport properties resulted in the suggestion of three planar molecules containing three or four pyrrole units as potential candidates for p-type semiconductors. Hole drift mobilities for ideal stacked dimers of these potential semiconductors were calculated and they range from 0.94 cm2·V−1·s−1 to 7.33 cm2·V−1·s−1.

Abstract
Density functional theory calculations were carried out to investigate the evolvement of charge transport properties of a set of new discotic systems as a function of ring and heteroatom (B, Si, S, and Se) substitution on the basic structure of perylene. The replacement of six-membered rings by five-membered rings in the reference compound has shown a prominent effect on the electron reorganization energy that decreases ∼0.2 eV from perylene to the new carbon five-membered ring derivative. Heteroatom substitution with boron also revealed to lower the LUMO energy level and increase the electron affinity, therefore lowering the electron injection barrier compared to perylene. Since the rate of the charge transfer between two molecules in columnar discotic systems is strongly dependent on the orientation of the stacked cores, the total energy and transfer integral of a dimer as a disc is rotated with respect to the other along the stacking axis have been predicted. Aimed at obtaining a more realistic approach to the bulk structure, the molecular geometry of clusters made up of five discs was fully optimized, and charge transfer rate and mobilities were estimated for charge transport along a one dimensional pathway. Heteroatom substitution with selenium yields electron transfer integral values ∼0.3 eV with a relative disc orientation of 25°, which is the preferred angle according to the dimer energy profile. All the results indicate that the tetraselenium-substituted derivative, not synthetized so far, could be a promising candidate among those studied in this work for the fabrication of n-type semiconductors based on columnar discotic liquid crystals materials.

Abstract
Three novel alkoxyphenyl N-substituted naphthalene bisimide derivatives, N,N′-bis(4-n-butoxyphenyl)-1,8:4,5-naphthalenetetracarboxylic (NBI1), N,N′-bis(4-n-hexyloxyphenyl)-1,8:4,5-naphthalenetetracarboxylic (NBI2), and N,N′-bis(4-n-octyloxyphenyl)-1,8:4,5-naphthalenetetracarboxylic (NBI3) as potential organic semiconductors, have been investigated using density functional theory calculations coupled with the incoherent charge-hopping model at the molecular and crystal levels. The calculated results demonstrate that the low-lying and delocalized LUMOs and larger adiabatic electron affinities of these compounds are beneficial to their stability when acting as n-type organic semiconductors. The reorganization energy and transfer integral can significantly influence the charge carrier mobility. The compounds featured with the small reorganization energy and large transfer integral have relatively high charge mobilities. The electron coupling among the dominant hopping pathways indicates that the charge-transport processes happen in the parallel dimer of neighboring molecules with π–π interaction. The investigation of the angle dependence of charge carrier mobility showed that both NBI1 and NBI3 crystals exhibit remarkable anisotropic charge transporting behaviors. The calculated absorption spectra by the time-dependent density functional theory revealed that the strongest absorption peaks in the visible region are assigned to the π → π* transition and these peaks are regulated by the transitions of HOMO → LUMO. The calculated electron mobilities of NBI1, NBI2, and NBI3 are 0.0365, 0.0312, and 0.0801 cm2 V–1 s–1, respectively, indicating that these compounds are suitable for n-type organic semiconductors.

Abstract
Following the theme of this special issue, two new compounds, the P-flowers C(16)(PH)(8) and C(16)(PF)(8), are designed by us and subsequently characterized by quantum chemical computations. Their geometries and infrared signatures are analyzed and compared to those of the well-known sulflower C(16)S(8). Their electronic structure and aromaticity are examined using the electron localization function (ELF) and also by the total and partial densities of state (DOS). Both C(16)(PF)(6) and C(16)(PH)(8) molecules exhibit small energy barrier of electron injection (Φ(e) = 0.33 eV for the gold electrode for the former, and Φ(e) = 0.1 eV for the calcium electrode for the latter), remarkably low reorganization energy and high rate of electron hopping. Thus, both theoretically designed P-flower molecules are predicted to be excellent candidates for organic n-type semiconductors.
