Effects of Film Thickness and Molecular Weight on the Interfacial Dynamics of Atactic Poly(methyl methacrylate)

Effect of Conductivity on In Situ Deactivation of Catechol-Boronate Complexation-Based Reversible Smart Adhesive

To reduce the need for elevated electrical potential to deactivate catechol-based smart adhesive and preserve its reversibility, conductive 1-pyrenemethyl methacrylate (PyMA) was incorporated into a catechol and phenylboronic acid-containing adhesive coating immobilized on aluminum (Al) discs. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) indicated that incorporation of 26 mol % of PyMA reduced ionic resistance (R_s) and charge-transfer resistance (R_c) of the coating from over 22 Ω/mm² to 5.9 and 1.2 Ω/mm², respectively. A custom-built Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) contact mechanics test setup was used to evaluate the adhesive property of the coating with in situ applied electricity using a titanium (Ti) sphere both as a test substrate as well as the cathode for application of electricity and the Al disc as the anode. The adhesive coating demonstrated over 95% reduction in the adhesive property when electricity (1-2 V) was applied while the adhesive was in direct contact with the Ti surface. The addition of PyMA enables the deactivation of the adhesive using a voltage as low as 1 V. Both cyclic voltammetry (CV) and attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra confirmed the formation of catechol-boronate complexation through electrochemical stimulation. Breaking the complex with an acidic buffer (pH 3) recovered the catechol for strong wet adhesion and the coating could be repeatedly deactivated and reactivated using low electrical potential for up to five cycles. Incorporation of both conductive PyMA and boronic acid as the temporary protecting group was required to achieve rapidly switchable adhesive that could be deactivated with low applied voltage.

Material properties particularly suited to be measured with helium scattering: selected examples from 2D materials, van der Waals heterostructures, glassy materials, catalytic substrates, topological insulators and superconducting radio frequency materials

Helium Atom Scattering (HAS) and Helium Spin-Echo scattering (HeSE), together helium scattering, are well established, but non-commercial surface science techniques. They are characterised by the beam inertness and very low beam energy (<0.1 eV) which allows essentially all materials and adsorbates, including fragile and/or insulating materials and light adsorbates such as hydrogen to be investigated on the atomic scale. At present there only exist an estimated less than 15 helium and helium spin-echo scattering instruments in total, spread across the world. This means that up till now the techniques have not been readily available for a broad scientific community. Efforts are ongoing to change this by establishing a central helium scattering facility, possibly in connection with a neutron or synchrotron facility. In this context it is important to clarify what information can be obtained from helium scattering that cannot be obtained with other surface science techniques. Here we present a non-exclusive overview of a range of material properties particularly suited to be measured with helium scattering: (i) high precision, direct measurements of bending rigidity and substrate coupling strength of a range of 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures as a function of temperature, (ii) direct measurements of the electron-phonon coupling constant λ exclusively in the low energy range (<0.1 eV, tuneable) for 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures (iii) direct measurements of the surface boson peak in glassy materials, (iv) aspects of polymer chain surface dynamics under nano-confinement (v) certain aspects of nanoscale surface topography, (vi) central properties of surface dynamics and surface diffusion of adsorbates (HeSE) and (vii) two specific science case examples - topological insulators and superconducting radio frequency materials, illustrating how combined HAS and HeSE are necessary to understand the properties of quantum materials. The paper finishes with (viii) examples of molecular surface scattering experiments and other atom surface scattering experiments which can be performed using HAS and HeSE instruments.

Comparative surface dynamics of amorphous and semicrystalline polymer films

The surface dynamics of amorphous and semicrystalline polymer films have been measured using helium atom scattering. Time-of-flight data were collected to resolve the elastic and inelastic scattering components in the diffuse scattering of neutral helium atoms from the surface of a thin poly(ethylene terephthalate) film. Debye-Waller attenuation was observed for both the amorphous and semicrystalline phases of the polymer by recording the decay of elastically scattered helium atoms with increasing surface temperature. Thermal attenuation measurements in the specular scattering geometry yielded perpendicular mean-square displacements of 2.7•10(-4) Å(2) K(-1) and 3.1•10(-4) Å(2) K(-1) for the amorphous and semicrystalline surfaces, respectively. The semicrystalline surface was consistently ∼15% softer than the amorphous across a variety of perpendicular momentum transfers. The Debye-Waller factors were also measured at off-specular angles to characterize the parallel mean-square displacements, which were found to increase by an order of magnitude over the perpendicular mean-square displacements for both surfaces. In contrast to the perpendicular motion, the semicrystalline state was ∼25% stiffer than the amorphous phase in the surface plane. These results were uniquely accessed through low-energy neutral helium atom scattering due to the highly surface-sensitive and nonperturbative nature of these interactions. The goal of tailoring the chemical and physical properties of complex advanced materials requires an improved understanding of interfacial dynamics, information that is obtainable through atomic beam scattering methods.
