Hierarchical hybrids of carbon nanotubes in amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polyaniline through a facile method: from smooth to thorny

A facile approach was developed to synthesize conjugated block copolymer (BCP) poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polyaniline (PEO-PANI). Aldehyde group-terminated PEO was prepared by an esterification reaction of p-formylbenzoic acid and PEO and then reacted with PANI from chemical oxidative polymerization. FT-IR, (1)H NMR, and GPC results indicated that BCPs with different PEO block lengths were successfully synthesized. Moreover, the BCPs were employed to noncovalently modify multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) through either the direct or indirect method. In the former method, transmission electron microscopy images showed that a core-shell MWNT@BCP hybrid with a shell thickness of gyration diameter of PEO block (2Rg,PEO) was obtained in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). These hybrids can be well dispersed in many common solvents and poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix. With the increase of PEO block length, the stability of the MWNT dispersion would be highly improved. Interestingly, in the indirect method where deionized water was added to the NMP solution of BCP/MWNT mixture, the surface of the hybrid micelles encapsulated with MWNTs changed from smooth into hierarchically thorny with the increase of BCP/MWNT weight ratio. In this case, the water contact angle had a minimum value of ~70° at the ratio of 1/8, indicating that the hierarchical thorns followed a Cassie-Baxter regime rather than a Wenzel one. A possible formation mechanism of the unique structure was also proposed.

Controlled growth of polyaniline fractals on HOPG through potentiodynamic electropolymerization

Polyaniline (PANI) in fractal dimension has been electrodeposited reproducibly on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) from 0.2 M aniline in 1 M aqueous HCl solution by potentiodynamic sweeping in the range of -0.2 to 0.76 V vs Ag/AgCl at room temperature. Fractal growth of PANI dendrimers is affected by diffusion limited polymerization (DLP) at a sweep rate of 15 mV s(-1) for 43 min. This type of PANI dendrimer is prepared for the first time on such large area HOPG substrate by electrochemical technique using rather simple cell setup. The fractal dimension has been determined by chronoamperometry (CA) and box counting technique and is found to vary from 1.4 to 1.9 with the duration of electropolymerization. The sweep rate, terminal oxidation potential, and the diverse surface anisotropy of the HOPG surface are found to be crucial factors in controlling the growth of such PANI fractals.

Solvent dependent assembly of a polyfluorene-polythiophene "rod-rod" block copolyelectrolyte: influence on photophysical properties

We report the solvent-driven assembly of a polyelectrolytic polyfluorene-polythiophene diblock copolymer-poly[9,9-bis(2-ethylhexyl)fluorene]-b-poly[3-(6-trimethylammoniumhexyl)thiophene] (PF2/6-b-P3TMAHT)-in tetrahydrofuran (THF), water, their 1:1 mixture and in subsequently prepared thin films, as investigated using a combination of scattering, microscopic and photoluminescence techniques. In solution PF2/6-b-P3TMAHT forms large (>100 nm) aggregates which undergo a transition from objects with surface fractal interface (THF) to ones with a significant planar component due to the presence of the 2-dimensionally merged ribbon-like aggregates or fused walls of the observed vesicular aggregates [THF-water (1:1)]. In THF-water and water the blocks are loosely segregated into P3TMAHT and PF2/6 rich domains, with PF2/6 dominating the aggregate interior. Depending on solvent, the spun films contain either aggregates with a crystalline interior (THF) or large 200 nm-2 microm vesicular aggregates embedded in a featureless matrix (THF-water and water). Structural variations are concomitant with distinctive solvatochromic changes in the photophysical properties including a color change from deep red (THF) to pale orange (THF-water and water) in solution, a decrease in fluorescence quantum yield with increasing water content, and a shift from photoluminescence of individual PF2/6 blocks (THF) to efficient PF2/6 --> P3TMAHT energy transfer (THF-water and water).
