Density Functional Approach to Adsorption and Retention of Spherical Molecules on Surfaces Modified with End-Grafted Polymers

Adsorption on Ligand-Tethered Nanoparticles

We use coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to study adsorption on ligand-tethered particles. Nanoparticles with attached flexible and stiff ligands are considered. We discuss how the excess adsorption isotherm, the thickness of the polymer corona, and its morphology depend on the number of ligands, their length, the size of the core, and the interaction parameters. We investigate the adsorption-induced structural transitions of polymer coatings. The behavior of systems involving curved and flat "brushes" is compared.

Adsorption-induced co-assembly of hairy and isotropic particles

We use coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to study the behavior of polymer-tethered particles immersed in fluids of isotropic particles. Particles modified with weakly anchored, mobile ligands are considered. We discuss how the concentration of fluid particles affects the morphology of an isolated hairy particle. It is shown that hairy particles present different morphologies including typical core-shell, octopus-like and corn-like, depending on fluid-segment interactions and the fluid density. The mechanism of changes in the shape of hairy particles is explained. The reconfiguration of the polymer corona arises from adsorption of fluid particles "on chains". The adsorbed fluid particles form bridges between the chains. This causes the mobile ligands to merge into clusters on the core surface. A part of the core remains empty so the hairy particle becomes a Janus-like object. We also study co-assembly in mixtures of hairy and isotropic particles. Depending on the strength of fluid-segment interactions, hairy particles with fluid particles trapped inside their coronas remain isolated or form mixed clusters of different structures. The aggregation of hairy particles results from the formation of bridges between chains belonging to different cores by fluid particles.

Towards the description of adsorption of water in slit-like pores with walls covered by molecular brushes

The density profiles, adsorption isotherms, and phase behavior of a water model in a slit-like pore with walls modified by pre-adsorbed tethered chain molecules have been studied in the framework of a density functional theory. Each chain is bonded to the surface by its terminal segment, and the surface density of grafted chains is the same for each wall. The model for water taken from the work of Clark et al. [Mol. Phys. 104, 3561 (2006)] reproduces successfully a bulk equation of state. The mean field approach has been used to describe the effects of attractive interactions. The chemical association effects are taken into account by using the first-order thermodynamic perturbation theory of Wertheim. We have found that the presence of molecular brushes on the pore walls has important consequences for the adsorption and phase behavior of confined water. If the brush segments do not attract water molecules strongly, the vapor-liquid coexistence envelope shrinks upon increasing brush density, but the critical temperature is weakly affected. Alteration from capillary condensation to evaporation is observed with changes in the brush density, number of segments of tethered chains, and/or chemical identity of segments. The crossover temperature is affected by all these factors. Moreover, we have shown that affinity of water to segments of tethers is an important factor determining adsorption of water vapor and the entire phase diagram.

Effective interactions between a pair of particles modified with tethered chains

Using molecular dynamics, we evaluate the potential of mean force for two models of hybrid nanoparticles, namely, for the models with fixed and movable chain ligands. We also investigate the structure of segments of chains around nanoparticles and its change when one nanoparticle approaches the other. In the case of an isolated particle, we also employ a density functional theory to compute the segment density profiles. Moreover, to determine the structure of segments around a core, we have employed the concept of the so-called mass dipoles.

Adsorption of hairy particles with mobile ligands: Molecular dynamics and density functional study

We study models of hairy nanoparticles in contact with a hard wall. Each particle is built of a spherical core with a number of ligands attached to it and each ligand is composed of several spherical, tangentially jointed segments. The number of segments is the same for all ligands. Particular models differ by the numbers of ligands and of segments per ligand, but the total number of segments is constant. Moreover, our model assumes that the ligands are tethered to the core in such a manner that they can "slide" over the core surface. Using molecular dynamics simulations we investigate the differences in the structure of a system close to the wall. In order to characterize the distribution of the ligands around the core, we have calculated the end-to-end distances of the ligands and the lengths and orientation of the mass dipoles. Additionally, we also employed a density functional approach to obtain the density profiles. We have found that if the number of ligands is not too high, the proposed version of the theory is capable to predict the structure of the system with a reasonable accuracy.

Surface-Initiated Controlled Radical Polymerization: State-of-the-Art, Opportunities, and Challenges in Surface and Interface Engineering with Polymer Brushes

The generation of polymer brushes by surface-initiated controlled radical polymerization (SI-CRP) techniques has become a powerful approach to tailor the chemical and physical properties of interfaces and has given rise to great advances in surface and interface engineering. Polymer brushes are defined as thin polymer films in which the individual polymer chains are tethered by one chain end to a solid interface. Significant advances have been made over the past years in the field of polymer brushes. This includes novel developments in SI-CRP, as well as the emergence of novel applications such as catalysis, electronics, nanomaterial synthesis and biosensing. Additionally, polymer brushes prepared via SI-CRP have been utilized to modify the surface of novel substrates such as natural fibers, polymer nanofibers, mesoporous materials, graphene, viruses and protein nanoparticles. The last years have also seen exciting advances in the chemical and physical characterization of polymer brushes, as well as an ever increasing set of computational and simulation tools that allow understanding and predictions of these surface-grafted polymer architectures. The aim of this contribution is to provide a comprehensive review that critically assesses recent advances in the field and highlights the opportunities and challenges for future work.

Adsorption-induced changes of the structure of the tethered chain layers in a simple fluid

We use density functional theory to study the influence of fluid adsorption on the structure of grafted chain layer. The chains are modeled as freely jointed spheres. The chain segments and spherical molecules of the fluid interact via the Lennard-Jones potential. The fluid molecules are attracted by the substrate. We calculate the excess adsorption isotherms, the average height of tethered chains, and the force acting on selected segments of the chains. The parameters that were varied include the length of grafted chains, the grafting density, the parameters characterizing fluid-chain and fluid-surface interactions, the bulk fluid density, and temperature. We show that depending on the density of the bulk fluid the height of the bonded layer increases, remains constant, or decreases with increasing temperature.

Stretching tethered polymer chains: density functional approach

We propose application of density functional theory to calculate the force acting on a selected segment of a tethered polymer chain that leads to stretching the chain. The density functional allows one to determine the effects due to the presence of other chains and solvent molecules. For high and moderate solvent densities the plot of the force versus the distance of the segment from the surface exhibits oscillatory behavior that has not been predicted by other approaches.
