Blue Shifting C−H···O Hydrogen Bonded Complexes between Chloroform and Small Cyclic Ketones: Ring-Size Effects on Stability and Spectral Shifts

Bi-ligand-fabricated CdS quantum dots to photo-induce aqueous-phase aldol condensation for biomass-derived carbonyl compounds

CdS QDs were fabricated using bi-ligands 11-sulfanylundecanoic acid and proline for photo-induced aqueous-phase aldol condensation of biomass-derived furfural compounds and ketones, and they displayed acceptable selectivity, activity and recycling properties for generation of a wide range of products with diverse applications. This work facilitates understanding the molecular-level design concepts of semiconductor photocatalysts.

Spectroscopic, density functional theoretical study, molecular docking, and in vitro studies based on anticancer activity studies against A549 lung cancer cell line of diphenylhydantoin adsorbed on AuNPs surface

The optimized geometry, FT-Raman, FT-IR, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, UV-Vis spectra, frontier molecular orbital analysis, molecular electrostatic potential analysis, and local and global reactivity descriptors of diphenylhydantoin (DPH) and diphenylhydantoin@AuNPs (DPHA) molecule have been investigated with the help of density functional theory method (B3LYP/6-31++G [d,p] together with LANL2DZ) and was compared and analyzed with the corresponding experimental data in order to identify their structural and bonding features responsible for their bioactivity. In-silico (molecular docking) biological activity screening of the molecules together with the in-vitro (SERS and MTT assay) analysis confirms the anticancer activity of DPH and DPHA molecules. The results of the structure-activity studies and bioactivity studies signify that the DPHA molecule is more active than the DPH molecule against lung cancer.

O-H stretching frequency red shifts do not correlate with the dissociation energies in the dimethylether and dimethylsulfide complexes of phenol derivatives

In this perspective, we present a comprehensive report on the spectroscopic and computational investigations of the hydrogen bonded (H-bonded) complexes of Me2O and Me2S with seven para-substituted H-bond donor phenols. The salient finding was that although the dissociation energies, D0, of the Me2O complexes were consistently higher than those of the analogous Me2S complexes, the red-shifts in phenolic O-H frequencies, Δν(O-H), showed the exactly opposite trend. This is in contravention of the general perception that the red shift in the X-H stretching frequency in the X-HY hydrogen bonded complexes is a reliable indicator of H-bond strength (D0), a concept popularly known as the Badger-Bauer rule. This is also in contrast to the trend reported for the H-bonded complexes of H2S/H2O with several para substituted phenols of different pKa values wherein the oxygen centered hydrogen bonded (OCHB) complexes consistently showed higher Δν(O-H) and D0 compared to those of the analogous sulfur centered hydrogen bonded (SCHB) complexes. Our effort was to understand these intriguing observations based on the spectroscopic investigations of 1 : 1 complexes in combination with a variety of high level quantum chemical calculations. Ab initio calculations at the MP2 level and the DFT calculations using various dispersion corrected density functionals (including DFT-D3) were performed on counterpoise corrected surfaces to compute the dissociation energy, D0, of the H-bonded complexes. The importance of anharmonic frequency computations is underscored as they were able to correctly reproduce the observed trend in the relative OH frequency shifts unlike the harmonic frequency computations. We have attempted to find a unified correlation that would globally fit the observed red shifts in the O-H frequency with the H-bonding strength for the four bases, namely, H2S, H2O, Me2O, and Me2S, in this set of H-bond donors. It was found that the proton affinity normalized Δν(O-H) values scale very well with the H-bond strength.

Understanding noncovalent bonds and their controlling forces

The fundamental underpinnings of noncovalent bonds are presented, focusing on the σ-hole interactions that are closely related to the H-bond. Different means of assessing their strength and the factors that control it are discussed. The establishment of a noncovalent bond is monitored as the two subunits are brought together, allowing the electrostatic, charge redistribution, and other effects to slowly take hold. Methods are discussed that permit prediction as to which site an approaching nucleophile will be drawn, and the maximum number of bonds around a central atom in its normal or hypervalent states is assessed. The manner in which a pair of anions can be held together despite an overall Coulombic repulsion is explained. The possibility that first-row atoms can participate in such bonds is discussed, along with the introduction of a tetrel analog of the dihydrogen bond.

Impact of donor acidity and acceptor anharmonicity on vc=o spectral shifts in O-H···O=C H-bonded ketone-alcohol complexes: An IR spectroscopic investigation

O-H···O=C Hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) results in spectral shifts in both ν_O-H and ν_C=O modes. A large number of investigations exist in literature that focuses on how the spectral shifts vary with certain properties of the donors and acceptors. However information on how the magnitude of spectral shift is dictated individually by the donor and acceptor is not yet clear to us. Here, IR spectroscopy in room temperature CCl₄ solution has been used to investigate how ν_C=O spectral shifts of ketones in H-bonded complexes with alcohols are influenced by change in donor and acceptor properties. For this purpose 25 number of O-H···O=C H-bonded complexes formed by 5 different ketones and 5 alcohols have been studied. The magnitude of red-shifts shown by the ν_C=O bands were found to show systematic trends with changing donor and acceptor species. It was found that for a particular ketone, the magnitude of shift increases monotonically with acidity of the alcohols. Spectral shifts were found to increase in a linear fashion with decreasing p^K_a of the donor alcohols. On the other hand, when the alcohol were kept fixed, the spectral shift was found to be dependent on the CO bond strength of the ketones. We found spectral shifts to linearly increase with increasing anharmonicity constant and decreasing dissociation energy of CO bond. Finally, it has been shown that there exist concomitant correlations of the spectral shifts with donor p^K_a and acceptor ν_C=O anharmonicity constant/bond dissociation energy. The relations have been validated for H-bonded complexes of 1,4-cyclohexanedione with the above mentioned five alcohols.

Effects of methylation in acceptors on the hydrogen bond complexes between 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol and cyclic ethers

In order to explore the effect of methylation on the stability and spectral shift of hydrogen bond complexes, the complexes of 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) with propylene oxide (PO) and isobutylene oxide (IBO) were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and ab initio computations. The comparable OH-stretching red shifts were observed upon complexation, and an enhancement of the OH-stretching band is shown with the partial pressure of monomers increasing. The OH-stretching frequency of TFE is red shifted by 180 and 201 cm^-1 with PO and IBO, respectively. By using quantum chemical calculations, we predicted the geometric parameters, binding energies, and spectral shifts of TFEPO/IBO hydrogen bond complexes. The calculated and observed spectral shifts follow the same trends. Compared with the TFEethylene oxide (EO) complex, the strength of the hydrogen bond in complex increases with the addition of methyl group, which likely results from the increase in basicity of the hydrogen bond acceptor. By combining the experimental integrated absorbance and the calculated IR intensity of the OH-stretching vibrational transition, the equilibrium constant for the complex formation was determined. In addition, atoms-in-molecules (AIM) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses were carried out to explain the red shift and the nature of the interaction in these complexes.

Stereo-preference of camphor for H-bonding with phenol, methanol and chloroform: A combined matrix isolation IR spectroscopic and quantum chemical investigation

Camphor is known to be held in the substrate pocket of cytochrome P450cam enzyme via H-bond with a tyrosine residue of the enzyme in a unique orientation. This structural exclusivity results in regio- and stereo-specific hydroxylation of camphor by the enzyme. We have carried out a combined IR spectroscopic and quantum chemical investigation to shed light on the factors influencing the conformational exclusivity of 1R-(+)-camphor in the substrate pocket of Cytochrome P450cam, and to determine whether the selectivity is an inherent property of the substrate itself, or is imposed by the enzyme. For this purpose, complexes of camphor have been studied with three H-bond donors namely phenol, methanol and chloroform. Each of the three donors was found to form stable complexes with two distinct conformers; the one mimicking the conformation in enzyme substrate pocket was found to be more stable of the two, for all three donors. Experimentally, both conformers of the H-bonded complexes were identified separately for phenol and methanol in an argon matrix at 8 K, but not for chloroform due to very small energy barrier for interconversion of the two conformers. In room temperature solution phase spectra of camphor with all three donors, the differences in spectral attributes between the two isomeric H-bonded complexes were lost due to thermal motions.

Ring-Size Effects on the Stability and Spectral Shifts of Hydrogen Bonded Cyclic Ethers Complexes

In order to investigate ring-size effects on the stability and spectral shifts of hydrogen bonded cyclic ethers complexes, the strength of hydrogen bonds in gas phase complexes formed between 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) and selected cyclic ethers were examined using FTIR spectroscopy. TFE was chosen as hydrogen bond donor in these complexes, while trimethylene oxide (TMO), tetrahydrofuran (THF) and tetrahydropyran (THP) were selected as hydrogen bond acceptors. Comparable OH-stretching red shifts were observed in the three kinds of complexes. The difference of red shifts is so small (<7 cm⁻¹) for TFE−TMO/THF/THP complexes that one can conclude that their stabilities and the strength of the hydrogen bonds are nearly similar and do not show any marked dependence with the ring size of the hydrogen bond acceptor. The equilibrium constants for the complexation were determined, and atoms-in-molecules (AIM) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses were performed to further investigate the intermolecular interactions. Regardless of the ring size, hydrogen bonds in the complexes showed similar strength, in agreement with the observed OH-stretching red shifts.

Antagonistic Interplay Between an Intermolecular CH···O and an Intramolecular OH···O Hydrogen Bond in a 1:1 Complex Between 1,2-Cyclohexanedione and Chloroform: A Combined Matrix Isolation Infrared and Quantum Chemistry Study

Matrix isolation infrared spectra of a weak C-H···O hydrogen-bonded complex between the keto-enol form of 1,2-cyclohexanedione (HCHD) and chloroform have been measured. The spectra reveal that the intramolecular O-H···O H-bond of HCHD is weakened as a result of complex formation, manifesting in prominent blue shift (∼23 cm^-1) of the ν_O-H band and red shifts (∼7 cm^-1) of ν_C═O bands of the acceptor (HCHD). The ν_C-H band of donor CHCl₃ undergoes a large red shift of ∼33 cm^-1. Very similar spectral effects are also observed for formation of the complex in CCl₄ solution at room temperature. Our analysis reveals that out of several possible iso-energetic conformational forms of the complex, the one involving antagonistic interplay between the two hydrogen bonds (intermolecular C-H···O and intramolecular O-H···O) is preferred. The combined experimental and calculated data presented here suggest that in condensed media, conformational preferences are guided by directional hyperconjugative charge transfer interactions at the C-H···O hydrogen bonding site of the complex.

N–H⋯N hydrogen bonding between pyrrole and N₂ results blue shift of ν_N–H accompanied by an increase in the N–H bond length.

Triplex blue-shifting hydrogen bonds of ClO4(-)···H-C in the nanointerlayer of montmorillonite complexed with cetyltrimethylammonium cation from hydrophilic to hydrophobic properties

In this study, molecular interactions of perchlorate (ClO4(-)), an emerging pollutant, with cetyltrimethylammonium(CTMA(+)) complexed in the nanointerlayer of negatively charged montmorillonite were characterized using the zeta potentials, FTIR, Raman, and XRD spectroscopy and quantified using quantum mechanical calculations and sorption experiments. We found that blue-shifting hydrogen bonds assisted in the uptake of ClO4(-) from water into the nanointerlayer spacing of CTMA(+)-montmorillonite and were tunable according to CTMA(+) loading. FTIR spectra presented an obvious 47 cm(-1) blue shift in the C-H vibration coming from the N-terminal methyl group of CTMA(+) when ClO4(-) was absorbed. Quantum mechanical calculations based on density functional theory demonstrated that triplex blue-shifting hydrogen bonds of C-H···O were formed between the three terminal methyl groups of CTMA(+) and three oxygen atoms of ClO4(-). The contribution of blue-shifting hydrogen bonds to perchlorate uptake switched from a ClO4(-)/CTMA(+) ratio of 0.0453 at low CTMA(+) loadings to a ClO4(-)/CTMA(+) ratio of 0.2563 (5.6-fold) at high CTMA(+) loadings, which can be ascribed to the evolution of the nanointerlayer microenvironments from hydrophilic properties to hydrophobic properties. The blue-shifting hydrogen bond of C-H···O that is tunable with the hydrophobic nature of the organic phase should be recognized to elucidate the biochemical behavior of perchlorate in organisms.
