Abstract
Carbene species play an integral role in high-energy chemistry, transition-metal-carbene chemistry, catalysis, photolytic formation of carbohydrates, and possibly even the formation of interstellar sugars. In 1921, "reactive formaldehyde"─now known as hydroxymethylene (HCOH)─was first implicated as an intermediate in photocatalytic processes. However, due to its transient nature, direct observation of HCOH has predominantly been attained using cryogenic isolation methods. As a result, HCOH gas-phase reactivity measurements have been limited. We directly observed HCOH using photoionization spectroscopy following UV photodissociation of methanol. Our measurements show it reacts slowly with O2 at room temperature. This work provides evidence for the formation mechanism of HCOH from CH3OH and its subsequent reactivity under gas-phase reaction conditions.

Abstract
Simulating vibrationally resolved electronic spectra of anharmonic systems, especially those involving double-well potential energy surfaces, often requires expensive quantum dynamics methods. Here, we explore the applicability and limitations of the recently proposed single-Hessian thawed Gaussian approximation for the simulation of spectra of systems with double-well potentials, including 1,2,4,5-tetrafluorobenzene, ammonia, phosphine, and arsine. This semiclassical wavepacket approach is shown to be more robust and to provide more accurate spectra than the conventional harmonic approximation. Specifically, we identify two cases in which the Gaussian wavepacket method is especially useful due to the breakdown of the harmonic approximation: (i) when the nuclear wavepacket is initially at the top of the potential barrier but delocalized over both wells, e.g., along a low-frequency mode, and (ii) when the wavepacket has enough energy to classically go over the low potential energy barrier connecting the two wells. The method is efficient and requires only a single classical ab initio molecular dynamics trajectory, in addition to the data required to compute the harmonic spectra. We also present an improved algorithm for computing the wavepacket autocorrelation function, which guarantees that the evaluated correlation function is continuous for arbitrary size of the time step.

Abstract
To alleviate the computational cost associated with on-the-fly ab initio semiclassical calculations of molecular spectra, we propose the single-Hessian thawed Gaussian approximation in which the Hessian of the potential energy at all points along an anharmonic classical trajectory is approximated by a constant matrix. The spectra obtained with this approximation are compared with the exact quantum spectra of a one-dimensional Morse potential and with the experimental spectra of ammonia and quinquethiophene. In all cases, the single-Hessian version performs almost as well as the much more expensive on-the-fly ab initio thawed Gaussian approximation and significantly better than the global harmonic schemes. Remarkably, unlike the thawed Gaussian approximation, the proposed method conserves energy exactly, despite the time dependence of the corresponding effective Hamiltonian, and, in addition, can be mapped to a higher-dimensional time-independent classical Hamiltonian system. We also provide a detailed comparison with several related approximations used for accelerating prefactor calculations in semiclassical simulations.

Abstract
The anionic products following (H + H+) abstraction from o-, m-, and p-methylphenol (cresol) are investigated using flowing afterglow-selected ion flow tube (FA-SIFT) mass spectrometry and anion photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). The PES of the multiple anion isomers formed in this reaction are reported, including those for the most abundant isomers, o-, m- and p-methylenephenoxide distonic radical anions. The electron affinity (EA) of the ground triplet electronic state of neutral m-methylenephenoxyl diradical was measured to be 2.227 ± 0.008 eV. However, the ground singlet electronic states of o- and p-methylenephenoxyl were found to be significantly stabilized by their resonance forms as a substituted cyclohexadienone, resulting in measured EAs of 1.217 ± 0.012 and 1.096 ± 0.007 eV, respectively. Upon electron photodetachment, the resulting neutral molecules were shown to have Franck-Condon active ring distortion vibrational modes with measured frequencies of 570 ± 180 and 450 ± 80 cm-1 for the ortho and para isomers, respectively. Photodetachment to excited electronic states was also investigated for all isomers, where similar vibrational modes were found to be Franck-Condon active, and singlet-triplet splittings are reported. The thermochemistry of these molecules was investigated using FA-SIFT combined with the acid bracketing technique to yield values of 341.4 ± 4.3, 349.1 ± 3.0, and 341.4 ± 4.3 kcal mol-1 for the o-, m-, and p-methylenephenol radicals, respectively. Construction of a thermodynamic cycle allowed for an experimental determination of the bond dissociation energy of the O-H bond of m-methylenephenol radical to be 86 ± 4 kcal mol-1, while this bond is significantly weaker for the ortho and para isomers at 55 ± 5 and 52 ± 5 kcal mol-1, respectively. Additional EAs and vibrational frequencies are reported for several methylphenyloxyl diradical isomers, the negative ions of which are also formed by the reaction of cresol with O-.

Abstract
We quantify the nonadiabatic contributions to the vibronic sidebands of equilibrium and explicitly time-resolved nonequilibrium photoelectron spectra for a vibronic model system of trans-polyacetylene. Using exact diagonalization, we directly evaluate the sum-over-states expressions for the linear-response photocurrent. We show that spurious peaks appear in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for the vibronic spectral function, which are not present in the exact spectral function of the system. The effect can be traced back to the factorized nature of the Born-Oppenheimer initial and final photoemission states and also persists when either only initial or final states are replaced by correlated vibronic states. Only when correlated initial and final vibronic states are taken into account are the spurious spectral weights of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation suppressed. In the nonequilibrium case, we illustrate for an initial Franck-Condon excitation and an explicit pump-pulse excitation how the vibronic wavepacket motion of the system can be traced in the time-resolved photoelectron spectra as a function of the pump-probe delay.

Abstract
Electronic state spectroscopy of limonene has been investigated using vacuum ultraviolet photoabsorption spectroscopy in the energy range 5.0-10.8 eV. The availability of a high resolution photon beam (~0.075 nm) enabled detailed analysis of the vibrational progressions and allowed us to propose, for the first time, new assignments for several Rydberg series. Excited states located in the 7.5-8.4 eV region have been studied for the first time. A He(I) photoelectron spectrum has also been recorded from 8.2 to 9.5 eV and compared to previous low resolution works. A new value of 8.521 ± 0.002 eV for the ground ionic state adiabatic ionisation energy is proposed. Absolute photoabsorption cross sections were derived in the 10-26 eV range from electron scattering data. All spectra presented in this paper represent the highest resolution data yet reported for limonene. These experiments are complemented by new ab initio calculations performed for the three most abundant conformational isomers of limonene, which we then used in the assignment of the spectral bands.

Abstract
Different uni- and bimolecular reactions of hydroxymethylene, an important intermediate in the photochemistry of formaldehyde, as well as its halogenated derivatives (XCOH, X = H, F, Cl, Br), have been considered using high-level CCSD(T)/CBS quantum chemical methods. The Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) and Eckart approximations were applied to estimate the tunneling rate constant of isomerization of trans-HCOH to H(2)CO, and the WKB procedure was found to perform better in this case. In agreement with recent calculations and experimental observations [Schreiner et al., Nature 2008, 453, 906], the half-life of HCOH at the low temperature limit in the absence of bimolecular processes was found to be very long (approximately 2.1 h). The corresponding half-life at room temperature was also noticeable (approximately 35 min). Bimolecular reactions of trans-hydroxymethylene with parent formaldehyde yield primarily more thermodynamically favorable glycolaldehyde via the specific mechanism involving 5-center transition state. The most preferable reaction of cis-hydroxymethylene with formaldehyde yields carbon monoxide and methanol. Due to very low activation barriers, both processes occur with nearly a collision rate. If the concentration of HCOH (and its halogenated analogues XCOH as well) is high enough, the bimolecular reactions of this species with itself become important, and H(2)CO (or X(H)CO) is then formed with a collision rate. The singlet-triplet energy separation of trans-HCOH is confirmed to be approximately -25 kcal/mol.
