Cold Collisions of OH(2Π) Molecules with He Atoms in External Fields

Rotational-vibrational resonance states

Resonance states are characterized by an energy that is above the lowest dissociation threshold of the potential energy hypersurface of the system and thus resonances have finite lifetimes. All molecules possess a large number of long- and short-lived resonance (quasibound) states. A considerable number of rotational-vibrational resonance states are accessible not only via quantum-chemical computations but also by spectroscopic and scattering experiments. In a number of chemical applications, most prominently in spectroscopy and reaction dynamics, consideration of rotational-vibrational resonance states is becoming more and more common. There are different first-principles techniques to compute and rationalize rotational-vibrational resonance states: one can perform scattering calculations or one can arrive at rovibrational resonances using variational or variational-like techniques based on methods developed for determining bound eigenstates. The latter approaches can be based either on the Hermitian (L², square integrable) or non-Hermitian (non-L²) formalisms of quantum mechanics. This Perspective reviews the basic concepts related to and the relevance of shape and Feshbach-type rotational-vibrational resonance states, discusses theoretical methods and computational tools allowing their efficient determination, and shows numerical examples from the authors' previous studies on the identification and characterization of rotational-vibrational resonances of polyatomic molecular systems.

Rotationally inelastic scattering of methyl radicals with Ar and N2

The rotationally inelastic scattering of methyl radical with Ar and N2 is examined at collision energies of 330 ± 25 cm(-1) and 425 ± 50 cm(-1), respectively. Differential cross sections (DCSs) were measured for different final n' rotational levels (up to n' = 5) of the methyl radicals, averaged over k' sub-levels, using a crossed molecular beam machine with velocity map imaging. For Ar as a collision partner, we present a newly constructed ab initio potential energy surface and quantum mechanical scattering calculations of state-resolved DCSs. These computed DCSs agree well with the measurements. The DCSs for both Ar and N2 collision partners are strongly forward peaked for all spectroscopic lines measured. For scattering angles below 60°, the theoretical CD3-Ar DCSs show diffraction oscillations that become less pronounced as n' increases, but these oscillations are not resolved experimentally. Comparisons are drawn with our recently reported DCSs for scattering of methyl radicals with He atoms.

New ab initio potential energy surfaces for the ro-vibrational excitation of OH(X2Π) by He

A new, three-dimensional potential energy is presented. Values for integral and differential cross sections, and for inelastic rate coefficients were obtained. The results agree and significantly extend previous studies on OH(X) + He collisions.

Resonances in rotationally inelastic scattering of OH(X2Π) with helium and neon

We present detailed calculations on resonances in rotationally and spin-orbit inelastic scattering of OH (X(2)Π, j = 3/2, F(1), f) radicals with He and Ne atoms. We calculate new ab initio potential energy surfaces for OH-He, and the cross sections derived from these surfaces compare well with the recent crossed beam scattering experiment of Kirste et al. [Phys. Rev. A 82, 042717 (2010)]. We identify both shape and Feshbach resonances in the integral and differential state-to-state scattering cross sections, and we discuss the prospects for experimentally observing scattering resonances using Stark decelerated beams of OH radicals.

Ultracold giant polyatomic Rydberg molecules: coherent control of molecular orientation

We predict the existence of a class of ultracold giant molecules formed from trapped ultracold Rydberg atoms and polar molecules. The interaction which leads to the formation of such molecules is the anisotropic, long-range charge-dipole interaction. We show that prominent candidate molecules such as deuterated hydroxyl (OD) and KRb should bind to Rydberg rubidium atoms, with energies E(b)≃5-25  GHz at distances R≃0.1-1  μm. These molecules form in double wells, mimicking chiral molecules, with each well containing a particular dipole orientation. We prepare a set of correlated dressed electron-dipole eigenstates which are used in an on-resonance Raman scheme to coherently control the molecular dipole orientation.
