How Measurements of Rate Coefficients at Low Temperature Increase the Predictivity of Photochemical Models of Titan’s Atmosphere

The Composition and Chemistry of Titan's Atmosphere

In this review I summarize the current state of knowledge about the composition of Titan's atmosphere and our current understanding of the suggested chemistry that leads to that observed composition. I begin with our present knowledge of the atmospheric composition, garnered from a variety of measurements including Cassini-Huygens, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, and other ground- and space-based telescopes. This review focuses on the typical vertical profiles of gases at low latitudes rather than global and temporal variations. The main body of the review presents a chemical description of how complex molecules are believed to arise from simpler species, considering all known "stable" molecules-those that have been uniquely identified in the neutral atmosphere. The last section of the review is devoted to the gaps in our present knowledge of Titan's chemical composition and how further work may fill those gaps.

Single-Photon Ionization Induced New Covalent Bond Formation in Acrylonitrile(AN)-Pyrrole(Py) Clusters

The formation of nitrogen-containing organic compounds is crucial for understanding chemical evolution and the origin of life in the interstellar medium (ISM). In this study, we explore whether acrylonitrile (AN) and pyrrole (Py) can form new nitrogen-containing compounds after single-photon ionization in their gaseous clusters by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)-infrared (IR) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. The results show that a strong linear H-bond is formed in neutral AN-Py, while cyclic or bicyclic H-bonded networks are formed in the neutral AN-Py2 cluster. It is found that the structure containing a new C-C covalent bond between two moieties in (AN-Py)+ is formed besides the formation of H-bonded structures after AN-Py is ionized by VUV light. In (AN-Py2)+ cluster cations, new C-C or C-N covalent bonds tend to be formed between two Py, with (Py)2+ as the core in the cluster. The results reveal that new covalent bonds are more likely to be formed between two Py species when AN and Py are present in the cationic clusters. These results provide spectroscopic evidence of the formation of new nitrogen-containing organic compounds from AN and Py induced by VUV, which are helpful for our understanding of the formation of diverse prebiotic molecules in interstellar space.

Unsaturated Dinitriles Formation Routes in Extraterrestrial Environments: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of the Reaction between Cyano Radicals and Cyanoethene (C2H3CN)

The reaction between cyano radicals (CN, X²Σ⁺) and cyanoethene (C₂H₃CN) has been investigated by a combined approach coupling crossed molecular beam (CMB) experiments with mass spectrometric detection and time-of-flight analysis at a collision energy of 44.6 kJ mol^–1 and electronic structure calculations to determine the relevant potential energy surface. The experimental results can be interpreted by assuming the occurrence of a dominant reaction pathway leading to the two but-2-enedinitrile (1,2-dicyanothene) isomers (E- and Z-NC–CH=CH–CN) in a H-displacement channel and, to a much minor extent, to 1,1-dicyanoethene, CH₂C(CN)₂. In order to derive the product branching ratios under the conditions of the CMB experiments and at colder temperatures, including those relevant to Titan and to cold interstellar clouds, we have carried out RRKM statistical calculations using the relevant potential energy surface of the investigated reaction. We have also estimated the rate coefficient at very low temperatures by employing a semiempirical method for the treatment of long-range interactions. The reaction has been found to be barrierless and fast also under the low temperature conditions of cold interstellar clouds and the atmosphere of Titan. Astrophysical implications and comparison with literature data are also presented. On the basis of the present work, 1,2-dicyanothene and 1,1-dicyanothene are excellent candidates for the search of dinitriles in the interstellar medium.

A chemical dynamics study of the reaction of the methylidyne radical (CH, X2Π) with dimethylacetylene (CH3CCCH3, X1A1g)

The gas-phase reaction of the methylidyne (CH; X²Π) radical with dimethylacetylene (CH₃CCCH₃; X¹A_1g) was studied at a collision energy of 20.6 kJ mol^-1 under single collision conditions with experimental results merged with ab initio calculations of the potential energy surface (PES) and ab initio molecule dynamics (AIMD) simulations. The crossed molecular beam experiment reveals that the reaction proceeds barrierless via indirect scattering dynamics through long-lived C₅H₇ reaction intermediate(s) ultimately dissociating to C₅H₆ isomers along with atomic hydrogen with atomic hydrogen predominantly released from the methyl groups as verified by replacing the methylidyne with the D1-methylidyne reactant. AIMD simulations reveal that the reaction dynamics are statistical leading predominantly to p28 (1-methyl-3-methylenecyclopropene, 13%) and p8 (1-penten-3-yne, 81%) plus atomic hydrogen with a significant amount of available energy being channeled into the internal excitation of the polyatomic reaction products. The dynamics are controlled by addition to the carbon-carbon triple bond with the reaction intermediates eventually eliminating a hydrogen atom from the methyl groups of the dimethylacetylene reactant forming 1-methyl-3-methylenecyclopropene (p28). The dominating pathways reveal an unexpected insertion of methylidyne into one of the six carbon-hydrogen single bonds of the methyl groups of dimethylacetylene leading to the acyclic intermediate, which then decomposes to 1-penten-3-yne (p8). Therefore, the methyl groups of dimethylacetylene effectively 'screen' the carbon-carbon triple bond from being attacked by addition thus directing the dynamics to an insertion process as seen exclusively in the reaction of methylidyne with ethane (C₂H₆) forming propylene (CH₃C₂H₃). Therefore, driven by the screening of the triple bond, one propynyl moiety (CH₃CC) acts in four out of five trajectories as a spectator thus driving an unexpected, but dominating chemistry in analogy to the methylidyne - ethane system.

Spectroscopic evidence of the C-N covalent bond formed between two interstellar molecules (ISM): acrylonitrile and ammonia

Acrylonitrile (AN) and ammonia (NH3) are two important nitrogen-containing interstellar molecules in outer space, especially on Titan. Herein, we measured infrared (IR) spectra of neutral and cationic AN-NH3 complexes by VUV single-photon ionization combined with time-of-flight mass spectrometry. On combining IR spectra with the theoretical calculations, we found that the molecules prefer to form a single-ring cyclic H-bonded structure in the neutral AN-NH3 and (AN)2-NH3 clusters. However, after ionization of AN-NH3 and (AN)2-NH3 clusters, a new C-N-covalent bond is confirmed to form directly between AN and NH3, without any energy barrier in the cationic complexes. Moreover, in the ionized (AN)2-NH3 cluster, the covalent C-N bond prefers to form between AN and NH3 rather than the two AN groups. These results provide spectroscopic evidence of AN forming a new molecule with NH3, induced by VUV radiation. The formation of the new C-N bond broadens our knowledge on the evolution of the prebiotic nitrogen-containing molecules in space.

Gas-phase kinetics of CH3CHO with OH radicals between 11.7 and 177.5 K

Gas-phase reactions in the interstellar medium (ISM) are a source of molecules in this environment. The knowledge of the rate coefficient for neutral-neutral reactions as a function of temperature, k(T), is essential to improve astrochemical models. In this work, we have experimentally measured k(T) for the reaction between the OH radical and acetaldehyde, both present in many sources of the ISM. Laser techniques coupled to a CRESU system were used to perform the kinetic measurements. The obtained modified Arrhenius equation is k(T = 11.7-177.5 K) = (1.2 ± 0.2) × 10-11 (T/300 K)-(1.8±0.1) exp-{(28.7 ± 2.5)/T} cm3 molecule-1 s-1. The k(T) value of the title reaction has been measured for the first time below 60 K. No pressure dependence of k(T) was observed at ca. 21, 50, 64 and 106 K. Finally, a pure gas-phase model indicates that the title reaction could become the main CH3CO formation pathway in dark molecular clouds, assuming that CH3CO is the main reaction product at 10 K.

On an EUV Atmospheric Simulation Chamber to Study the Photochemical Processes of Titan's Atmosphere

The in situ exploration of Titan’s atmosphere requires the development of laboratory experiments to understand the molecular growth pathways initiated by photochemistry in the upper layers of the atmosphere. Key species and dominant reaction pathways are used to feed chemical network models that reproduce the chemical and physical processes of this complex environment. Energetic UV photons initiate highly efficient chemistry by forming reactive species in the ionospheres of the satellite. We present here a laboratory experiment based on a new closed and removable photoreactor coupled here to an Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) irradiation beam produced by the high-order harmonic generation of a femtosecond laser. This type of EUV stable source allow long-term irradiation experiments in which a plethora of individual reactions can take place. In order to demonstrate the validity of our approach, we irradiated for 7 hours at 89.2 nm, a gas mixture based on N₂/CH₄ (5%). Using only one wavelength, products of the reaction reveal an efficient photochemistry with the formation of large hydrocarbons but especially organic compounds rich in nitrogen similar to Titan. Among these nitrogen compounds, new species had never before been identified in the mass spectra obtained in situ in Titan’s atmosphere. Their production in this experiment, on the opposite, corroborates previous experimental measurements in the literature on the chemical composition of aerosol analogues produced in the laboratory. Diazo-compounds such as dimethyldiazene (C₂H₆N₂), have been observed and are consistent with the large nitrogen incorporation observed by the aerosols collector pyrolysis instrument of the Huygens probe. This work represents an important step forward in the use of a closed cell chamber irradiated by the innovative EUV source for the generation of photochemical analogues of Titan aerosols. This approach allows to better constrain and understand the growth pathways of nitrogen incorporation into organic aerosols in Titan’s atmosphere.

Kinetics Of The H + CH2 → CH + H2 Reaction At Low Temperature

A quasiclassical trajectory study of the kinetics of the title astrochemical reaction in a range of temperatures varying from 5 to 1000 K (corresponding to both the outer and the inner regions of the protostar and the circumstellar envelopes) was carried out and a clear dependence of the rate coefficient on the temperature is given, in contrast with the constant value adopted in kinetics astrochemical databases. Levering the massive nature of the performed calculations and of the detailed dynamical investigation of the reactive process, a rationalization of the temperature dependence of the released translational energy and of the rovibrational population of the CH and H₂ diatomic products is also provided. Furthermore, the effect of the initial rovibrational energy of CH₂ on the state-specific rate coefficients and cross sections is analyzed in order to single out the role played by the different regions of the potential energy surface on the dynamical outcomes and on the modeling the temperature dependence of the reactive efficiency of the investigated process. This led to a parametrization of the computed rate in terms of the following double Arrhenius expression (in cm³ s^-1), k(T) = 2.50 × 10^-10 exp(- 1.67/T) + 5.98 × 10^-11 exp(- 280.5/T), alternative to the piecewise formulation into the three subintervals of temperature in which the overall 5-1000 K interval can be divided.

O2 formation in cold environments

The diffusional dynamics of atomic oxygen in and on amorphous solid water (ASW) to form molecular oxygen is characterized. Reactive molecular dynamics simulations to study bond breaking and bond formation show that vibrational relaxation of the highly excited diatomic occurs on the 10 ns to 100 ns time scale. The relaxation process is highly nonexponential and can be characterized by a stretched exponential decay reminiscent of the dynamics of glasses. The stretched exponents range from β = 0.15 for relaxation on the surface to β = 0.21 for the dynamics in bulk. It is also found that coupling of the O2 relaxation to the internal water modes occurs which speeds up the vibrational relaxation by a factor of 4. Extrapolation of the stretched exponential decay to 1 μs yields a final vibrational quantum number v = 2 for O2(X3Σ-g), consistent with experimental results from photolysis of SO2 on ASW at 193 nm which find v ≤ 3. Desorption energies of water from the surface range from 1.5 to 2.0 kcal mol-1 compared with 1.8 kcal mol-1 found from experiment, depending on whether the water molecules are flexible or not.

Prebiotic-like chemistry on Titan

Titan, the largest satellite of Saturn, is the only one in the solar system with a dense atmosphere. Mainly composed of dinitrogen with several % of methane, this atmosphere experiences complex organic processes, both in the gas and aerosol phases, which are of prebiotic interest and within an environment of astrobiological interest. This tutorial review presents the different approaches which can be followed to study such an exotic place and its chemistry: observation, theoretical modeling and experimental simulation. It describes the Cassini-Huygens mission, as an example of observational tools, and gives the new astrobiologically oriented vision of Titan which is now available by coupling the three approaches. This includes the many analogies between Titan and the Earth, in spite of the much lower temperature in the Saturn system, the complex organic chemistry in the atmosphere, from the gas to the aerosol phases, but also the potential organic chemistry on Titan's surface, and in its possible internal water ocean.

Airfoil sampling of a pulsed Laval beam with tunable vacuum ultraviolet synchrotron ionization quadrupole mass spectrometry: application to low-temperature kinetics and product detection

A new pulsed Laval nozzle apparatus with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) synchrotron photoionization quadrupole mass spectrometry is constructed to study low-temperature radical-neutral chemical reactions of importance for modeling the atmosphere of Titan and the outer planets. A design for the sampling geometry of a pulsed Laval nozzle expansion has been developed that operates successfully for the determination of rate coefficients by time-resolved mass spectrometry. The new concept employs airfoil sampling of the collimated expansion with excellent sampling throughput. Time-resolved profiles of the high Mach number gas flow obtained by photoionization signals show that perturbation of the collimated expansion by the airfoil is negligible. The reaction of C(2)H with C(2)H(2) is studied at 70 K as a proof-of-principle result for both low-temperature rate coefficient measurements and product identification based on the photoionization spectrum of the reaction product versus VUV photon energy. This approach can be used to provide new insights into reaction mechanisms occurring at kinetic rates close to the collision-determined limit.

Formation of nitriles and imines in the atmosphere of Titan: combined crossed-beam and theoretical studies on the reaction dynamics of excited nitrogen atoms N(2D) with ethane

The dynamics of the H-displacement channels in the reaction N(2D) + C2H6 have been investigated by the crossed molecular beam technique with mass spectrometric detection and time-of-flight analysis at two different collision energies (18.0 and 31.4 kJ mol(-1)). From the derived center-of-mass product angular and translational energy distributions the reaction micromechanisms and the product energy partitioning have been obtained. The interpretation of the scattering results is assisted by new ab initio electronic structure calculations of stationary points and product energetics for the C2H6N ground state doublet potential energy surface. C-C bond breaking and NH production channels have been theoretically characterized and the statistical branching ratio derived at the temperatures relevant for the atmosphere of Titan. Methanimine plus CH3 and ethanimine plus H are the main reaction channels. Implications for the atmospheric chemistry of Titan are discussed.

Knowledge-based probabilistic representations of branching ratios in chemical networks: the case of dissociative recombinations

Experimental data about branching ratios for the products of dissociative recombination of polyatomic ions are presently the unique information source available to modelers of natural or laboratory chemical plasmas. Yet, because of limitations in the measurement techniques, data for many ions are incomplete. In particular, the repartition of hydrogen atoms among the fragments of hydrocarbons ions is often not available. A consequence is that proper implementation of dissociative recombination processes in chemical models is difficult, and many models ignore invaluable data. We propose a novel probabilistic approach based on Dirichlet-type distributions, enabling modelers to fully account for the available information. As an application, we consider the production rate of radicals through dissociative recombination in an ionospheric chemistry model of Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. We show how the complete scheme of dissociative recombination products derived with our method dramatically affects these rates in comparison with the simplistic H-loss mechanism implemented by default in all recent models.
