Does Tetrahydrofuran Ring Open upon Ionization and Dissociation? A TPES and TPEPICO Investigation

Water acting as a catalyst for electron-driven molecular break-up of tetrahydrofuran

Low-energy electron-induced reactions in hydrated molecular complexes are important in various fields ranging from the Earth’s environment to radiobiological processes including radiation therapy. Nevertheless, our understanding of the reaction mechanisms in particular in the condensed phase and the role of water in aqueous environments is incomplete. Here we use small hydrogen-bonded pure and mixed dimers of the heterocyclic molecule tetrahydrofuran (THF) and water as models for biochemically relevant systems. For electron-impact-induced ionization of these dimers, a molecular ring-break mechanism is observed, which is absent for the THF monomer. Employing coincident fragment ion mass and electron momentum spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations, we find that ionization of the outermost THF orbital initiates significant rearrangement of the dimer structure increasing the internal energy and leading to THF ring-break. These results demonstrate that the local environment in form of hydrogen-bonded molecules can considerably affect the stability of molecular covalent bonds.

Modelling charge transfer processes in C2+-tetrahydrofuran collision for ion-induced radiation damage in DNA building blocks

Investigations of collision-induced processes involving carbon ions and molecules of biological interest, in particular DNA building blocks, are crucial to model the effect of radiation on cells in order to improve medical treatments for cancer therapy. Using carbon ions appears to be one of the most efficient ways to increase biological effectiveness to damage cancerous cells by irradiating deep-seated tumors. Therefore, interest in accurate calculations to understand fundamental processes occurring in ion-molecule collision systems has been growing recently. In this context, the charge transfer process in the collision of C²⁺(1s²2s²) ions with the heterocyclic sugar moiety building block tetrahydrofuran (THF) was studied in order to interpret the mechanisms occurring at the molecular level. The molecular structure properties of THF were obtained by means of ab initio quantum chemistry methods. The role of the conformational structure and the orientation of the THF molecule in collision with C²⁺ ions are particularly discussed. Anisotropic effects of the process dynamics in the collision energy ranging from eV to keV by means of semiclassical treatment are also presented and compared to previous experimental and theoretical investigations. A detailed analysis of the obtained cross sections points out an increase in these values by three orders of magnitude by a change of the THF symmetry from C_2v to C_s in collision with C²⁺, which determines a more efficient charge transfer in this case.

Study of Electron Ionization and Fragmentation of Non-hydrated and Hydrated Tetrahydrofuran Clusters

Mass spectroscopic investigations on tetrahydrofuran (THF, C₄H₈O), a common model molecule of the DNA-backbone, have been carried out. We irradiated isolated THF and (hydrated) THF clusters with low energy electrons (electron energy ~70 eV) in order to study electron ionization and ionic fragmentation. For elucidation of fragmentation pathways, deuterated TDF (C₄D₈O) was investigated as well. One major observation is that the cluster environment shows overall a protective behavior on THF. However, also new fragmentation channels open in the cluster. In this context, we were able to solve a discrepancy in the literature about the fragment ion peak at mass 55 u in the electron ionization mass spectrum of THF. We ascribe this ion yield to the fragmentation of ionized THF clusters. Graphical Abstract ᅟ.

Fragmentation of tetrahydrofuran molecules by H(+), C(+), and O(+) collisions at the incident energy range of 25-1000 eV

We have studied fragmentation processes of the gas-phase tetrahydrofuran (THF) molecules in collisions with the H(+), C(+), and O(+) cations. The collision energies have been varied between 25 and 1000 eV and thus covered a velocity range from 10 to 440 km/s. The following excited neutral fragments of THF have been observed: the atomic hydrogen H(n), n = 4-9, carbon atoms in the 2p3s (1)P1, 2p4p (1)D2, and 2p4p (3)P states and vibrationally and rotationally excited diatomic CH fragments in the A(2)Δ and B(2)Σ(-) states. Fragmentation yields of these excited fragments have been measured as functions of the projectile energy (velocity). Our results show that the fragmentation mechanism depends on the projectile cations and is dominated by electron transfer from tetrahydrofuran molecules to cations. It has been additionally hypothesized that in the C(+)+THF collisions a [C-C4H8O](+) complex is formed prior to dissociation. The possible reaction channels involved in fragmentation of THF under the H(+), C(+), and O(+) cations impact are also discussed.

Efficient coupling of nanosecond laser pulses with the cluster medium: Generation of hydrogen-like [C](5+) atomic ions

RATIONALE

Clusters exhibit diverse photochemical behavior as a function of laser parameters, i.e. wavelength, pulse duration and intensity. One such aspect of cluster photochemistry is the generation of energetic multiply charged atomic ions, upon efficient interaction of clusters with intense laser pulses. In the present work, mass spectrometric investigations have been carried out on clusters of tetrahydrofuran (THF, C4 H8 O) - a saturated cyclic ether - subjected to nanosecond laser pulse (spanning from UV to IR wavelength range) with the aim of shedding light on the complex mechanism of laser-cluster interactions, which is still ambiguous.

METHODS

THF clusters, generated via supersonic expansion of room-temperature THF vapours seeded in argon, were subjected to gigawatt intensity laser pulses (355, 532 and 1064 nm) obtained from a nanosecond Nd:YAG laser. The ions generated upon laser-cluster interaction were characterized using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer.

RESULTS

At 355 nm, THF clusters exhibit the usual multiphoton dissociation/ionization behavior while, at 532 nm, observation of multiply charged atomic ions of carbon (up to [C](4+) ) and oxygen (up to [O](3+) ) was ascribed to Coulomb explosion of THF clusters. For studies carried out at 1064 nm, multiply charged atomic ions of carbon up to [C](5+) having an ionization energy of ~392 eV were observed, at a laser intensity of 10(10) W/cm(2) .

CONCLUSIONS

The observation of [C](5+) atomic ions signifies efficient coupling of the laser energy with the cluster medium, using a nanosecond laser pulse. The results have been rationalized on the basis of a three-stage cluster ionization mechanism, suggesting the crucial role of the threshold laser intensity for initiating ionization within the cluster and generation of optimum charge centers for efficient extraction of energy from the laser pulse.
