Unusual Quantum Interference in the S1 State of DABCO and Observation of Intramolecular Vibrational Redistribution

Excited state dynamics of normal dithienylethene molecules either isolated or deposited on an argon cluster

Real-time dynamics of the electronically excited open-ring isomer of 1,2-bis(2-methylbenzo[b]thiophen-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentene (BTF6) and 1,2-bis(2,4-dimethyl-5-phenyl-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene (PTF6) molecules was investigated using a set-up that associates a molecular beam, femtosecond lasers and velocity map imaging. The molecules were either free in the gas phase or bound to an argon cluster. DFT and TDDFT calculations were performed on BTF6. The calculated vertical excitation energies indicate an excitation by the pump laser towards a superposition of S₅ and S₆ states. The free molecule dynamics was found to follow a three wavepacket model. One describes the parallel conformer (P) of these molecules. It is unreactive with respect to the ring closure reaction which is responsible for the photochromic property of these molecules. It has no observable decay at the experiment time scale (up to 350 ps). The other two wavepackets describe the reactive antiparallel conformer (AP). They are formed by an early splitting of the wavepacket that was launched initially by the pump laser. They can be considered as generated by excitation of different, essentially uncoupled, deformation modes. They subsequently evolve along independent pathways. One is directed ballistically towards a conical intersection (CI) and decays through the CI to a potential energy surface where it can no longer be detected. The other fraction of the wavepacket decays also towards undetected states but in this case the driving mechanism is a non-adiabatic electronic relaxation within a potential well of the energy surfaces where it was launched. When BTF6 and PTF6 molecules are bound to an argon cluster, the same three wavepacket model applies. The vibronic relaxation timespan is enhanced by a factor 5 and a larger fraction of AP conformers follows this pathway. In contrast, the time constant associated with the ballistic movement is enhanced by only a factor of 2.

Reaction dynamics within a cluster environment

This perspective article reviews experimental and theoretical works where rare gas clusters and helium nanodroplets are used as a nanoreactor to investigate chemical dynamics in a solvent environment. A historical perspective is presented first followed by specific considerations on the mobility of reactants within these reaction media. The dynamical response of pure clusters and nanodroplets to photoexcitation is shortly reviewed before examining the role of the cluster (or nanodroplet) degrees of freedom in the photodynamics of the guest atoms and molecules.

A Computational Approach to Nontraditional Intrinsic Luminescence: Vibrationally Resolved Absorption and Fluorescence Spectra of DABCO

Recently, so-called "nontraditional intrinsic luminescence" has been reported in several macromolecular systems. Although DABCO (1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) is the first system in which the effect was observed, a thorough analysis of the optical properties of the molecule, which would reveal the origin of this mysterious effect, is still pending. We perform an advanced post-Hartree-Fock treatment of the low-lying electronic states of this molecule, which need to be described with care because of their pronounced Rydberg character. We take a deeper look into the low-lying electronic transitions of DABCO targeting the explanation of the complex vibronic structures of its absorption and fluorescence spectra. Two electronic states, the ¹E'(n₊3p_xy) and ¹A₂^″(n₊3p_z) states, contribute to the absorption spectrum in the 39000-46000 cm^-1 spectral range. We also reveal the spectroscopic signature of the ¹A₂^″(n₊3p_z) state. The analyses of the contributions of individual vibrational normal modes allowed the identification of those giving rise to the complex vibronic structures of the spectra. Fluorescence emission arises from the vibronic coupling of the one-photon forbidden transition between the ¹A₁^'(n₊3s) state and the electronic ground state. The spectrum, which can be interpreted in terms of populating a few vibrational normal modes, is shifted toward visible wavelengths mostly due to the forced interaction of the lone pair electrons of the two nitrogen atoms. Our work on DABCO may help to rationalize the luminescence of more complex systems containing tertiary amine groups.

Time-Resolved Observation of the Solvation Dynamics of a Rydberg Excited Molecule Deposited on an Argon Cluster. II. DABCO☆ at Long Time Delays

The real-time dynamics of DABCO-argon clusters is investigated in a femtosecond pump-probe experiment where the pump excites DABCO to the S₁ state within the argon cluster. The probe operates by photoionization and documents the energy and angular distributions of the resulting photoelectrons. The present work complements a previous work from our group [Awali Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2014, 16, 516-526] where this dynamics was probed at short time, up to 4 ps after the pump pulse. Here, the dynamics is followed up to 500 ps. A multiscale dynamics is observed. It includes a jump between two solvation sites (time scale 0.27 ps) followed by the relaxation of the solvation cage excess vibrational energy (time scale 14 ps) and then by that of DABCO (time scale >150 ps). Polarization anisotropy, double polarization, and angular anisotropy effects are reported also. They are interpreted (quantitatively for the former effect) in terms of decoherence of rotational alignment, driven by the overall rotation of the DABCO-argon clusters. A tomographic view of the DABCO excited orbital, provided by the double anisotropy effect, is discussed on a qualitative basis.

Imaging large amplitude out-of-plane motion in photoexcited pentafluorobenzene using time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy: a computational study

Excited-state dynamics of pentafluorobenzene is studied in detail for a quartic vibronic coupling model including the six b1 vibrational modes of the molecule and the two lowest excited electronic states. The study analyzes the influence of the large-amplitude out-of-plane vibrational motion on the electronic dynamics and extends to the simulation of the emerging time-resolved photoelectron spectra. The mapping of coherent non-separable electron-nuclear motion into oscillatory photoelectron signals is discussed.

Anisotropy in Time-Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy in the Gas Phase

Transient absorption anisotropy is a well-established technique in time-resolved liquid phase spectroscopy. Here, we show how the technique is applied in the gas phase for time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and what type of additional information can be obtained as compared to other techniques. We exemplify its use by presenting results on rotational revivals in pyrazine after excitation at 324 nm and provide new insights into two recent experiments: (i) the difference between Rydberg and valence state excitation after one- and two-photon absorption in butadiene and (ii) excitation to the two lowest lying vibronic modes of the degenerate π3p Rydberg state in 1-azabicyclo[2.2.0]octane. Going forward, we expect the technique to be used on a regular basis, especially with the advent of high harmonic probe sources and liquid beam setups where other techniques to extract polarization-dependent information such as velocity map imaging cannot easily be applied.

Stereoisomers of hydroxymethanes: Probing structural and spectroscopic features upon substitution

Ab initio studies on CH_x(OH)_4-x (x = 0-3) polyols are carried out to derive their structural and spectroscopic features. Several stereoisomers (both equilibrium structures and transition states) are found. Some are predicted here for the first time. We determined hence their geometrical parameters, vibrational frequencies, electronic excitation energies for the singlet manifold, and IR spectra. While the IR spectra for all polyols present similar shapes, their UV spectra exhibit however distinct band origin that are specific to each polyol and more interestingly to each diasteroisomer. Stereoelectronic effects are also noticed and discussed. It is suggested that UV spectroscopy is an efficient probe to experimentally identify polyols in mixtures involving polyols.

Time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of hydrated electrons near a liquid water surface

We present time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of trapped electrons near liquid surfaces. Photoemission from the ground state of a hydrated electron at 260 nm is found to be isotropic, while anisotropic photoemission is observed for the excited states of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2,2,2]octane and I- in aqueous solutions. Our results indicate that surface and subsurface species create hydrated electrons in the bulk side. No signature of a surface-bound electron has been observed.

Ab initio study of the structures and electronic states of small neutral and ionic DABCO--Ar(n) clusters

In the present theoretical work, we investigated the stationary points (minima and transition states) on the ground state potential energy surfaces of neutral and ionic 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO)--Ar(n)⁰,⁺¹ (n = 1-4) clusters. As established in our systematic work on DABCO--Ar cluster (Mathivon et al., J Chem Phys 139:164306, 2013), the (R)MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level is accurate enough for validating the prediction of stable forms. For n = 1 and 2, further computations at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level confirm these assumptions. We show that some of the already known isomers of these heteroclusters derived using lower levels of theory are not realistic. More interestingly, our work reveals that DABCO is subject to slight deformations when binding to a small number of Ar atoms. Moreover, we computed the potential energy surfaces of the lowest singlet electronic states of DABCO--Ar(n)(n = 1-3) and of DABCO⁺--Ar(n)(n = 1-3), and the transition moments for the Sp(p = 1-3) ← S0 neutral transitions. These electronic states are found to be Rydberg in nature. The shape of their potentials is mainly repulsive with slight stabilization in the S2 potentials. Finally, the effects of microsolvation of DABCO in Ar clusters in ground and electronic excited states are discussed. The photophysical and photochemical dynamics of these electronic states may be complex.
