Abstract
Abstract
A donor–acceptor substituted derivative 2,6-diamino-4-(3,4,5-trimethoxy-phenyl)-pyridine-3,5-dicarbonitrile (DTPP) has been synthesized and its photophysical properties have been studied. Effect of solvent on the photophysical features of DTPP has been undertaken by steady state absorption and emission techniques. Strong solvatochromic emission has been observed due to intramolecular charge transfer characteristics, upon changing the solvent polarity, revealing the highly polar character of the excited state. Dipole moment changes between the excited and ground state have been estimated by using the theory of solvatochromism from Lippert–Mataga and Reichardt’s correlations. The geometrical parameters for ground and excited states, conformational flexibility, and NLO behavior of the molecule have been theoretically investigated. The electronic distributions of DTPP in HOMO and LUMO were also investigated using density functional theory (DFT) methods at B3LYP/6-31 G** level. The correlation of experimental results with theoretical predictions obtained via DFT substantiates the presence of polarity dependent of the emission spectra.

Abstract
A donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) chromophore, 2-amino-4-(9-ethyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl)-8-methoxy-5,6-dihydrobenzo[h]quinoline-3-carbonitrile (AEDQ) was synthesized from the condensation of 6-methoxy-3,4-dihydronaphthalen-1(2H)-one, 9-ethyl-9H-carbazole-3-carbaldehyde, malononitrile and NH4OAc in ethanol. Spectroscopic techniques and elemental analysis were employed to establish the structure of AEDQ. Photophysical parameters and fluorescence quantum yield were calculated in the different polarity solvents to evaluate the interactions of the solvent with AEDQ chromophore. Further, the interaction of the AEDQ with cationic and anionic surfactants (CTAB, SDS) were also evaluated by using fluorescence spectroscopy techniques. The intensity of the fluorescence spectrum increased as the concentration of surfactants increased, suggesting that strong interaction occurs between AEDQ with surfactants, and this interaction arises from electrostatic forces. As a result, the AEDQ chromophore could be used to determine the CMC of surfactants. The disc diffusion and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) technique were used to test in-vitro antibacterial activity against Gram +ve and Gram -ve bacteria, and the results are compared with the standard drug, tetracycline. AEDQ also showed good ADMET, pharmacokinetics and drug-likeness properties, which are desirable for a good drug candidate. The molecule also fits well in the DNA gyrase A active pocket site with the binding free energy of -17.92 kcal/mol, which testifies its good antibacterial activity.

Abstract
The optical properties of a visible absorption range6-Substituted-1, 2, 4-Triazine mono glucosyl fluorescent derivative dye, such as absorption spectra, emission spectra in different solvents, were experimentally investigated. As well, some important photo physical parameters such as extinction coefficient (ε), cross-sections of the absorption (σa) and the emission (σe), quantum yield (фf), fluorescence lifetime, oscillator strength (f), the dipole moment (μ), decay rate radiative constant (kr), energy yield of fluorescence (Ef) and the length of attenuation Λ (λ) were assessed. The ground-state (μg) and excited-state (μe) dipole moments by solvatochromic correlations method were reported. The dye amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) of 2 × 10-4M with different input pumping energies of a continuous wave blue diode laser (λ = 450 nm) was studied. Photostability of dye was observed that was decreased to 53% of its initial energy by pumping with 100 mW of diode laser after exposure to 120 min.

Abstract
Understanding the kinetics and energetics of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) reactions in constrained media has attracted considerable research interest, as constrained media provide a handle to tune the microenvironments and consequently the mechanisms of PET reactions. In this study, PET reactions between excited 7-aminocoumarin acceptors and ground-state N,N-dimethylaniline (DMAN) donor have been investigated in mixed micellar media composed of triblock copolymer, P123, and anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), with varying SDS-to-P123 molar ratios (n values). The objective is to elucidate the role of the n values in the rates and energetics of PET reactions over the entire time range from the subpicosecond to the subnanosecond domain, especially in regard to the applicability of the two-dimensional ET (2DET) mechanism. It is observed that by changing the n values, there is a significant change in the hydration characteristics of the SDS-P123 mixed micelles, which in turn changes the kinetics to energetic correlations for the PET reactions. Fluorescence from the excited coumarin acceptors undergoes substantial quenching due to PET from DMAN donor in all of the studied micelles as evidenced from steady-state, subnanosecond time-resolved (TR) and ultrafast (subpicosecond/femtosecond) fluorescence up-conversion measurements. The quenching rate constants (kq), estimated from subnanosecond TR fluorescence studies, and the individual component-wise decay rates (τi-1), estimated from up-conversion measurements, increase gradually with increasing n value, corroborating well with the sequentially increased micropolarity of the mixed micelles. Interestingly, it is observed that the correlations of either kq (from subnanosecond studies) or τi-1 (from femtosecond studies) with the reaction exergonicity (-ΔG°) show the noteworthy Marcus inversion (MI) behavior in a very consistent and similar manner for the entire time window, from subpicoseconds to subnanoseconds. The onset of MI always appears at an exergonicity (-ΔG°MI) much lower than solvent reorganization energy (λs), suggesting the involvement of 2DET mechanism throughout the subpicosecond to subnanosecond time domains. The present results thus provide a comprehensive picture of the kinetics and energetics of the PET reactions in constrained media for the whole time span and unequivocally establish the applicability of 2DET mechanism for the PET reactions in constrained media, eliminating any apprehensions about the effect of time resolution of the subnanosecond setup on the observed Marcus inversion behavior. This is indeed an important finding, providing valuable insights for PET reactions in constrained media, which has not been explored explicitly in any of the previous studies. Observation of MI behavior and the modulations in the PET reactions by simply changing the composition of SDS in the SDS-P123 mixed micelles are noteworthy findings of the present study and are expected to find suitable applications for better utilization and outcome of the PET reactions.

Abstract
This study investigates the role of varying alkyl chain lengths of a series of surface-active 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C nMIm][BF4], n = 4, 6, and 10) ionic liquids (ILs) as cosurfactants in modifying the micellar characteristics of a tetronic star-block copolymer, T1304, and the consequent effects on bimolecular photoinduced electron transfer (PET) reactions carried out in these T1304-IL mixed micellar systems. Using coumarin 153 as the probe dye and following ground-state absorption, steady-state fluorescence, and time-resolved emission measurements, the micropolarity, microviscosity, and solvent relaxation dynamics in the micellar palisade layer have been revealed both in pure T1304 and in T1304-IL systems. With increasing alkyl chain length of the ILs, the palisade layer of the micelles gradually becomes more polar and less viscous, suggesting better incorporation of the longer alkyl chain length ILs as cosurfactants into the T1304 micelles. The bimolecular PET reactions, involving 7-aminocoumarins as acceptors and N, N-dimethylaniline as the donor, are considerably modulated in T1304 micelles by the presence of the ILs, the effect being more prominent for ILs with longer alkyl chain lengths. In all of the micellar systems, correlations of the electron transfer (ET) kinetics with the reaction exergonicity (-Δ G0) show clear Marcus inversion (MI) behavior where onsets of MI invariably appear at significantly lower exergonicities, suggesting the involvement of a two-dimensional ET mechanism. Interestingly, the Marcus correlations display significant variations, namely, enhanced reaction rates and gradual shift in the onset of MI toward higher exergonicity, as longer alkyl chain length ILs are sequentially introduced as cosurfactants. From the observed results, it is convincingly realized that 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium-based ILs can be used satisfactorily as cosurfactants in tetronic star-block copolymer solutions to modulate PET reactions very significantly for their better utilizations in suitable applied areas.

Abstract
Microenvironment-sensitive fluorescent nucleosides present attractive advantages over single-emitting dyes for sensing inter-biomolecular interactions involving DNA. Herein, we report the rational design and synthesis of triazolyl push-pull fluorophore-labeled uridines via the intermediacy of C5-[4-(2-propynyl(methyl)amino)]phenyl acetylene as a universal linker. The synthesized nucleosides showed interesting solvatochromic characteristic and/or intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) features. A few of them also exhibited dual-emitting characteristics evidencing our designing concept. The HOMO-LUMO distribution showed that the emissive states of these nucleosides were characterized with more significant electron redistribution between the C5-[4-(2-propynyl(methyl)amino)]phenyl triazolyl donor moiety and the aromatic chromophores linked to it, leading to modulated emission property. The solvent polarity sensitivity of these nucleosides was also tested. The synthesized triazolyl benzonitrile (10C), naphthyl (10E), and pyrenyl (10G) nucleosides were found to exhibit interesting ICT and dual (LE/ICT) emission properties. The dual-emitting pyrenyl nucleoside maintained a good ratiometric response in the BSA protein microenvironment, enabling the switch-on ratiometric sensing of BSA as the only protein biomolecule. Thus, it is expected that the new fluorescent nucleoside analogues would be useful in designing DNA probes for nucleic acid analysis or studying DNA-protein interactions via a drastic change in fluorescence response due to a change in micropolarity.

Abstract
Styryl and/or quinoline structural fragments, present in a large number of bioactive substances, inspired the design of various new drug candidates. In this paper, we describe the photophysical behavior of trans-[2-(4-methoxystyryl)]quinoline-1-oxide (trans-MSQNO) on the basis of X-ray analysis data, theoretical calculations as well as steady state and time-resolved spectroscopy experiments in various media. The molecule crystallizes in orthorhombic unit cell containing eight molecules of N-oxide, space group Pbca. The NO bond is substantially shorter in comparison with the NO bond in the ZnTPP unit [1.3052(11) Å vs. 1.335(2) Å]. Variation of emission colors from the violet (~450nm) through blue (480nm), green (525nm) and yellow (575nm) is observed in different environments. Comparable values of lifetimes estimated both at ambient temperature and at 77K suggest that excited state dynamics in this case is viscosity independent. DFT and TD DFT B3LYP/6-31G(d, p) calculations performed for four different trans-MSQNO rotamers in the gas phase, as well as nonpolar and polar media (PCM model) suggest that an equilibrium between them can be significantly altered even by a relatively weak interactions with the environment. It is suggested that varying intensity ratios of experimental absorption bands in different media may be due to the dominant share of one or more rotamers of the excited trans-MSQNO molecule. Gas phase calculations show also that the vertical ππ*, S0→S1, transition resulting from the HOMO→LUMO electronic configuration exhibits only a partial CT nature. On the other hand, in polar media, a substantial increment of excited state dipole moment of all rotamers compared to the ground state, its increase with increasing solvent polarity and a significant red shift in the absorption and emission spectra, point to the enhanced CT nature of the S1 excited state. Hence, the trans-MSQNO molecule may be considered a subsequent styrylquinoline drug candidate where the CT drug-receptor interactions are of a high importance.

Abstract
The present work describes the photophysical properties of two newly synthesized compounds, namely (E)-10-butyl-3-(2-(thiazolo[4,5-b]quinoxalin-2-yl)vinyl)-10H-phenothiazine (PTQ) and (E)-10-butyl-3-(2-(1,1-dimethyl-1H-benzo[e]indol-2-yl)vinyl)-10H-phenothiazine (PBI). A strong intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) is observed in both dyes as indicated from absorption and emission studies on varying the solvent polarity. This can be concluded from the large Stokes shifts among these dyes as PTQ exhibits large Stokes shift with >270nm and PBI around 200nm. The effect of increasing polarity caused drastic increase in the charge transfer process leading to twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) process in both the dyes PTQ and PBI. Time-resolved emission studies and non-radiative decay rate constant indicates that the excited states of both dyes behave differently with respect to solvent polarity. The non-radiative decay constant increases dramatically with the solvent polarity specifying change of ICT emissive states in non-polar solvent while TICT emitting states in highly polar solvent. On the other hand, PBI follows a general trend initially exhibiting higher non-radiative decay constant in non-polar solvent like cyclohexane, lowest in moderate polarity owing to the ICT emissive state but with increase in the polarity, the non-radiative decay constant again increases indicating TICT states.

Abstract
The interaction of acridine orange (AOH(+)) with calf thymus DNA (ct-DNA) under different dye-DNA conditions has been investigated in detail using multispectroscopic techniques, unraveling a number of hitherto unexplored intricacies of dye-DNA binding. The observed results intriguingly show contrasting binding features when low (2.4 μM) and significantly high (23 μM) dye concentrations are used. It is conclusively inferred from absorption, steady-state fluorescence, circular dichroism, fluorescence decay and anisotropy decay studies that at low [DNA] to [dye] ratio, especially with higher dye concentration, dimeric AOH(+) predominantly binds externally to DNA surfaces through electrostatic interactions. At sufficiently high [DNA] to [dye] ratios, however, the interaction intriguingly changes to monomeric AOH(+) bound to DNA, predominantly in the intercalative mode between DNA base pairs, with partly an electrostatic binding on DNA surfaces. With very low initial dye concentration, monomeric (AOH(+)) mostly binds to DNA through intercalative and electrostatic modes for most DNA to dye ratios. The present study demonstrates a systematic correlation of the striking changes in the photophysical properties of the dye upon multimode binding with DNA. The observed results are of great significance in understanding the fundamental insights of dye/drug binding to DNA hosts, of use in the design of effective therapeutic agents.

Abstract
Here, we synthesized a new coumarinyl chalcone derivative 3-[3-(3-Methyl-thiophen-2-yl)-acryloyl]-chromen-2-one (MTC) by simple and proficient method. A comprehensive study on the photophysics of a coumarinyl chalcone derivative having pi-conjugated potential chromophore system 3-[3-(3-Methyl-thiophen-2-yl)-acryloyl]-chromen-2-one (MTC) has been carried out spectroscopically. The electronic absorption and emission characteristic of MTC were studied in different protic and aprotic solvents using absorption and steady-state fluorescence techniques. The spectral behavior of this compound is found to be extremely sensitive to the polarity and hydrogen bonding nature of the solvent. The compound shows very strong solvent polarity dependent changes in their photophysical characteristics, namely, remarkable red shift in the emission spectra with increasing solvent polarity, change in Stokes shift, significant reduction in the fluorescence quantum yield; indicating that the fluorescence states of these compounds are of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character. The solvent effect on the photophysical parameters such as singlet absorption, molar absorptivity, oscillator strength, dipole moment, fluorescence spectra, and fluorescence quantum yield of the compound has been investigated in detail. The difference between the excited and ground state dipole moments (Δμ) were estimated from solvatochromic methods using Lippert-Mataga and Reichardt's correlations. The prepared compound was also studied by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The results revealed that it could be easily reproduce by computational means.

Abstract
A comprehensive investigation on the photophysics of a π-conjugated potential push-pull chromophore system 4,4'-(1E,1'E)-2,2'-(Pyrazine-2,5-diyl)bis(ethene-2,1-diyl)bis(N,N-dimethylaniline) (PENDA) has been carried out spectroscopically. The optical absorption and emission properties of this molecule have been studied in different solvents. The molecule PENDA shows strong solvatochromic emission upon changing the solvent polarity from nonpolar to polar; indicating that emission state is of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character. The solvent effect on the spectral properties such as singlet absorption, molar absorptivity, oscillator strength, dipole moment and fluorescence quantum yield of PENDA have been studied in detail. Lippert-Mataga and Reichardt correlations were used to estimate the difference between the excited and ground state dipole moments (Δμ). Ground and electronic excited states geometric optimizations were performed using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), respectively, with the Gaussian 09 package. A solution of (8×10(-5) M) PENDA in THF, dioxane, CH3CN and CHCl3 gives laser emission when pumped by a nitrogen laser pulse (λex=337.1 nm) of 800 ps duration and 1.48 mJ pulse energy. PENDA dye displays fluorescence quenching by colloidal silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in ethanol. The fluorescence data reveal that dynamic quenching and energy transfer play a major role in the fluorescence quenching mechanism.

Abstract
The spectral characteristics of trans-2-[4'-(N,N-dimethylamino)styryl]imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (t-DMASIP-b) have been investigated using absorption and fluorescence techniques, and compared with 2-(4'-N,N-dimethylamino)imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (DMAPIP-b). The study reveals that introduction of a C[double bond, length as m-dash]C double bond strongly perturbs the photophysics of the system. Unlike DMAPIP-b, t-DMASIP-b emits a single emission in aprotic and protic solvents. The emission occurs from the locally excited state in nonpolar solvents and from a planar intramolecular charge transfer (PICT) state in polar solvents. Multiple linear regression analysis suggests that among the different solvent parameters, the dipolar interaction contributes more to the stabilization of the system in both the ground and excited states. Theoretical calculations suggest that, unlike in DMAPIP-b, proton coupled twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) emission does not occur in t-DMASIP-b. The higher quantum yield obtained in the viscous solvent glycerol is attributed to the restriction of the twisting of the olefinic bond. The photoirradiation of t-DMASIP-b shows that isomerization takes place in all solvents, including viscous glycerol. The theoretically simulated potential energy surface shows that isomerization occurs via a phantom state, which is a nonradiative process. The rise in temperature favors the photoisomerization, thus, the fluorescence quantum yield decreases. The prototropic study indicates that, unlike in DMAPIP-b, the protonation takes place at different places to form the monocations.

Abstract
Intriguing colour change and change in fluorescence band of 2-(4-(dimethylamino)styryl)-1-methylpyridinium iodide from nonpolar to polar protic solvent, and also from molecular container cucurbit[7]uril environment to polar protic solvent has been reported here. This interesting colour change of this dye with respect to the medium makes this dye useful as a sensor. Change in spectral characteristics of DASPMI along with change of colour from orange to yellow with increasing polarity of medium is interpreted as due to negative solvatochromatism. Complexations of probe-cucurbit[7]uril (1:1 and 2:1) cause structural change of the probe molecule due to hydrogen bond interaction of cationic part of the dye with CO group of cucurbit[7]uril and the colour change of the solution ensued. On addition of sodium chloride to the inclusion complex the dye is released from cucurbit[7]uril interior with colour of the solution reverted back. Theoretical results show that one carbon atom in the styryl part containing the positive charge gets too close to a carbon atom of cucurbit[7]uril to cause a phenomenal increase of dipole moment by 10X.

Abstract
Based on spectroscopic measurements and DFT calculations, fluorescence properties of thiazolo[4,5-b]pyrazine (TPy) derivatives with the phenyl group at the C2 position were studied. TPys were readily prepared from the corresponding amidopyrazines, which have a similar fluorescent core to a bioluminescence light emitter, Cypridina oxyluciferin. It was found that the introduction of electron-donating (methoxy and dimethylamino) groups onto the 2-phenyl moiety of the TPy derivatives, as well as the phenyl and 4-(dimethylamino)phenyl groups at C2 and C6, respectively, increases the fluorescence yield and appearance of solvatochromic character. The mechanism of increasing the fluorescence yield depending on the substituents is discussed. These findings provide useful information on designing new TPy fluorophores.

Abstract
Photophysical studies have been carried out to explore the aggregation behavior of coumarin-153 (C153) dye in polar organic solvents of both aprotic and protic nature, namely acetonitrile (ACN) and ethanol (EtOH). No unusual behavior is observed in aprotic ACN solvent, suggesting only the monomers of the dye as the single emitting species in the solution. In protic EtOH solvent, however, the dye shows the presence of multiple emitting species in the solution. The concentration-, temperature- and wavelength-dependent changes in the fluorescence decays, and the time-resolved emission spectra (TRES) and area-normalized emission spectra (TRANES) suggest the coexistence of dye aggregates along with the dye monomers in the EtOH solution. Observed results indicate that the emission spectra of the aggregates are substantially blue-shifted compared to the spectra of the monomers, suggesting the H-aggregation of the dye in the present cases. Time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy, ultrafast fluorescence up-conversion measurements and scanning electron microscopy studies support the aggregation of the dye in EtOH solution. Strong dipole-dipole interaction is supposedly responsible for the aggregation of C153 dye (dipole moment ∼6.4 D) and the polar protic solvent EtOH apparently stabilizes the aggregates through solute-solvent hydrogen bonding interaction, which is not possible in aprotic ACN solvent. This is further supported by the time-resolved fluorescence results in a strongly hydrogen bond donating solvent, 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol. Aggregation of C153 dye observed in the present study in polar protic organic solvent is an intriguing finding, as the dye is widely used as a fluorescent probe for various photochemical studies, where overlooking such aggregation will definitely mislead the observed results.

Abstract
Unlike most other electron donor–acceptor (EDA) molecules, aminochalcones exhibit
unusual solvent polarity-dependent fluorescence behavior. The photophysical
behavior of two aminochalcones, namely, 4-aminochalcone (AC) and
4-dimethylaminochalcone (DMAC), has been studied in a viscous room-temperature
ionic liquid (IL), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate,
[bmim][PF6], by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence
techniques. The observation of a single emission band in viscous IL, which is
similar to the one observed in less viscous polar conventional solvents,
suggests no twisting is necessary for the formation of the charge-transfer state
from which the emission of aminochalcones originates. The fluorescence decay
profiles, solvation dynamics, and excitation-wavelength-dependent emission
behavior of AC are found to be quite different from those of DMAC in the IL. The
observed difference is attributed to specific H-bonding interaction between AC
and [bmim][PF6].

Abstract
The photophysical properties of a carbonyl-containing carotenoid analogue in an s-cis configuration, relative to the conjugated π system, 2-(all-trans-retinylidene)-indan-1,3-dione (C20Ind), were investigated by femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy in various solvents. The lifetime of the optically forbidden S(1) state of C20Ind becomes long as solvent polarity increases. This trend is completely opposite to the situation of S(1-ICT) dynamics of carbonyl-containing carotenoids, such as peridinin and fucoxanthin. Excitation energy dependence of the transient absorption measurements shows that the transient absorption spectra in nonpolar solvents were originated from two distinct transient species, while those in polar and protic solvents are due to a single transient species. By referring to the results of MNDO-PSDCI (modified neglect of differential overlap with partial single- and double-configuration interaction) calculations, we conclude: (1) in polar and protic solvents, the S(1) state is generated following excitation up to the S(2) state; (2) in nonpolar solvents, however, both the S(1) and the (1)nπ* states are generated; and (3) C20Ind does not generate the S(1-ICT) state, despite the fact that it has two conjugated carbonyl groups.
