Dynamics in Organic Ionic Liquids in Distinct Regions Using Charged and Uncharged Orientational Relaxation Probes

Probing the heterogeneity of molecular level organization of ionic liquids: a comparative study using neutral Nile red and cationic Nile blue sulfate as fluorescent probes for butyrolactam-based protic ionic liquids

Ionic liquids (ILs) are liquid salts composed of cations and anions, known for their significant local heterogeneity at the molecular level. To understand the microheterogeneity with regard to their local polarity and local viscosity, we have used two structurally similar but chemically distinguishable fluorescent probes: Nile red (NR), a neutral molecule, and Nile blue sulfate (NBS), a charged molecule. A comparative study of the response of the two probes to the molecular level heterogeneity of ILs is expected to provide a better clarity of understanding regarding the charged polar domain and the uncharged hydrophobic domain of ILs. Towards this, we synthesized two butyrolactam-based protic ionic liquids (PILs), i.e., BTF and BTD, with the same ionic headgroup ([BT]+) and different alkyl tails ([RCOO]-), where {R = H, C11H23}. BTF has no significant hydrophobic domain, whereas BTD has a larger hydrophobic domain. Temperature-dependent fluorescence parameters such as fluorescence intensity, lifetime, and anisotropy were measured for both NR and NBS molecules. The use of a pair of structurally similar but ionically different probes enables differential estimation of parameters like the microviscosity of a domain using the fluorescence anisotropy parameter (r). The absorption and emission spectra of both probe molecules are observed to be blue shifted upon going from BTF to BTD. NR showed a significant blue shift in absorption and emission band maxima. Conversely, NBS exhibited a small wavelength shift, possibly influenced by the preferred location of their charged head group domain. Temperature-dependent rotational relaxation time (θ) of NR in BTD is smaller than that of NBS by 60-70%, indicating that stronger charge-charge interactions exist between the polar domain of BTD and NBS. Moreover, it is observed that the local viscosity of the BTF IL around both probes is similar, whereas there is a considerable difference for the BTD IL. These results are an indication that NBS being charged prefers to locate itself in the charged head group region of the IL, whereas NR being neutral tends to reside both in the hydrophobic domain and in the head group but is predominantly located in the hydrophobic domain.

Solvent Role of Ionic Liquids in Fundamental Chemical Reaction Dynamics Analyzed by Time-Resolved Spectroscopy

Ionic liquids (ILs), which are used as solvents for chemical reactions, are different from conventional organic solvents owing to their designability. Physicochemical parameters of the ILs, such as polarity and viscosity, that affect chemical equilibria and reaction kinetics can be tuned by changing the combination of anions and cations or by varying the lengths of the alkyl chains present in the cations. We were interested in knowing how these physicochemical parameters affect fundamental chemical reactions in ILs. Therefore, in this personal account, we investigate our recent work on two different photochemical reactions in ILs, namely excited-state intramolecular proton transfer of hydroxyflavone and photodissociation of aminodisulfide, using time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. Interestingly, the roles of the ILs in these chemical reactions are quite different. The effect of the cationic species of the ILs (i. e., the head groups and number of alkyl carbons) on the solvation environment upon photoexcitation and reaction rate are discussed.

Anomalous Dependence of Translational Diffusion on the Water Mole Fraction for Solute Molecules Dissolved in a 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Tetrafluoroborate/Water Mixture

Translational diffusion coefficients of carbon monoxide (CO), diphenylacetylene (DPA), and diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP) were determined in mixtures of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C₄mim]BF₄) and water using transient grating spectroscopy at different mole fractions of water (x_w). While DPA exhibited a larger diffusion coefficient than DPCP at low water mole fractions (x_w < 0.7), as observed for conventional liquids and ionic liquids (ILs), it was smaller at high mole fractions (x_w > 0.9). The apparent molecular radius of DPA determined using the Stokes-Einstein equation at x_w > 0.9 is close to the radius of an IL cluster in a water pool as determined from small-angle neutron scattering experiments (J. Bowers et al., Langmuir, 2004, 20, 2192-2198), suggesting that the DPA molecules are trapped in IL clusters in the water pool and move together. The solvation state of DPCP in the mixture was studied using Raman spectroscopy. Dramatically strong water/DPCP hydrogen bonding was observed at higher water mole fractions, suggesting that DPCP is located near the cluster interfaces. The large diffusion coefficient of DPCP suggests that hopping of DPCP between IL clusters occurs through hydrogen bonding with water.

Temperature-Dependent Constrained Diffusion of Micro-Confined Alkylimidazolium Chloride Ionic Liquids

Alkylimidazolium chloride ionic liquids (ILs) have many uses in a variety of separation systems, including micro-confined separation systems. To understand the separation mechanism in these systems, the diffusion properties of analytes in ILs under relevant operating conditions, including micro-confinement dimension and temperature, should be known. For example, separation efficiencies for various IL-based microextraction techniques are dependent on the sample volume and temperature. Temperature-dependent (20-100 °C) fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) was utilized to determine the diffusion properties of a zwitterionic, hydrophilic dye, ATTO 647, in alkylimidazolium chloride ILs in micro-confined geometries. These micro-confined geometries were generated by sandwiching the IL between glass substrates that were separated by ∼1 to 100 μm. From the measured temperature-dependent FRAP data, we note alkyl chain length-, thickness-, and temperature-dependent diffusion coefficients, with values ranging from 0.021 to 46 μm2/s. Deviations from Brownian diffusion are observed at lower temperatures and increasingly less so at elevated temperatures; the differences are attributed to alterations in intermolecular interactions that reduce temperature-dependent nanoscale structural heterogeneities. The temperature- and thickness-dependent data provide a useful foundation for efficient design of micro-confined IL separation systems.

Choline chloride and ethylene glycol based deep eutectic solvent (DES) versus hydroxyl functionalized room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs): assessing the differences in microscopic behaviour between the DES and RTILs

With the aim of understanding the differences in the behavior of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) in terms of their structure, dynamics, and intra- and intermolecular interactions, three different ILs and one DES having similar functionalities (hydroxyl) have been investigated by using both ensembled average and single-molecule spectroscopic techniques. Specifically, for this purpose, a choline chloride based DES (ethaline) and three hydroxyl functionalized ILs (1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([OHEMIM][NTF₂]), N-(2-hydroxyl ethyl)-N-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([OHEMPy][NTf₂]), and N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-N,N-dimethylpropan-1-aminium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([OHC3CH][NTf₂])) are employed and investigated by EPR, time-resolved fluorescence, NMR and FCS studies. Estimation of polarity through EPR spectroscopy has revealed that the hydroxyl ILs employed in these studies are hyper-polar (close to water) in nature, whereas the polarity of the DES is found to be close to those of aliphatic polyhydroxy-alcohols. Interestingly, both time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy and FCS studies on these systems have suggested that the hydroxyl ILs are more dynamically heterogeneous than the DES. More interestingly, PFG-NMR measurements have indicated that the fluid structure of ethaline is relatively more associated as compared to those of the ILs despite the fact that all the cations have the same hydroxyl functionalities. All these investigations have essentially demonstrated that, despite having similar functionalities, both the DES and hydroxyl ILs employed in the present study exhibit microscopic behaviours that are significantly different from each other, indicating the interplay of various intermolecular interactions within the constituent species in governing the behaviours of these solvent systems.

Effect of Lithium-Ion on the Structural Organization of Monocationic and Dicationic Ionic Liquids

In recent times, ionic liquid-based (ILs) electrolytic system has emerged as suitable alternative to the conventional organic solvent-based electrolytic system. However, since, anion of ILs is known to form aggregates in the presence of lithium-ions (Li⁺), and this can influence the transport properties of Li⁺ ion in a significant manner, it is, therefore, important to understand how lithium-ions influence the structure and dynamics of ILs. With this objective, in the present study, intermolecular interaction, structural organization, and dynamics of monocationic ILs (MILs) and dicationic IL (DIL) have been studied in the absence and presence of lithium salt. Specifically, for this purpose, two MILs, 1-methyl-3-propylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C₃C₁im][NTf₂]), 1-hexyl-3-propylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C₆C₁im][NTf₂]), and a DIL, 1,6-bis(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)hexane bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([C₆(mim)₂][NTf₂]₂) have been chosen in such a way that either the alkyl chain of MILs becomes equal or half of the spacer chain length of DIL. To understand the effect of the addition of lithium-ion on the structural organization of MILs and DIL, steady-state absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies, time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques have been used. Structural organization in the apolar and polar domains of ILs has been probed by following the rotational diffusion of suitably chosen solute in the concerned media through time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy (TRFA) measurements. TRFA studies have revealed that with the addition of Li⁺ ion, coordination between the Li⁺ ions and anions of MILs and DILs takes place in the ionic region leading to a change in the structural organization of the apolar regions of the respective medium. In fact, upon adding lithium-ions, a reduction in the packing of alkyl chains has also been observed for the MILs. However, not much change in the structural organization of the apolar region of the DIL has been observed when Li⁺ ion is added to it. In the presence of Li⁺ ions, a similar trend in the change of structural organization of polar regions for both MILs and DIL has been observed. Further, measurements of the self-diffusion coefficient through NMR have also supported the observation that Li⁺ ion also perturbs the nanostructural organization of the MIL in a significant manner than that it does for the DIL. The behavior of DIL in the presence of Li⁺ ion, as revealed by the present study, has been rationalized by considering the folded arrangement of DIL in the fluid-structure. Essentially, all of these investigations have suggested that the addition of lithium-ion significantly alters the microscopic behavior of MILs in comparison to that of DIL. The outcome of this study is expected to be helpful in realizing the potentials of these media as electrolytes in battery applications.

Comparison between pyrrolidinium-based and imidazolium-based dicationic ionic liquids: intermolecular interaction, structural organization, and solute dynamics

With an aim to understand the difference in the behaviour of imidazolium and pyrrolidinium-based dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) in terms of the intermolecular interactions, microscopic-structure and dynamics, two DILs, the imidazolium-based 1,9-bis(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)nonane bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide and the pyrrolidinium-based 1,9-bis(1-methylpyrrolidinium-1-yl)nonane bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, have been synthesized and subsequently investigated by exploiting combined steady sate and time resolved fluorescence, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic techniques. Data obtained for DILs have also been compared with their corresponding mono-cationic counterpart (MILs) to evaluate and understand the distinctive characteristics of the DILs in contrast with the corresponding MILs. Steady state emission and EPR data have revealed that the pyrrolidinium-based DIL is slightly less polar than the imidazolium-based DIL. Temperature-dependent fluorescence anisotropy decay of two probes, perylene and MPTS (8-methoxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonate), has been measured in DILs as well as in MILs. Solute-solvent coupling constants obtained from the experimentally measured rotational correlation times with the aid of Stokes-Einstein-Debye hydrodynamic theory have indicated appreciable differences in the dynamics of both the solutes on going from MILs to DILs. More interestingly, the outcome of the NMR study has suggested that the alkyl spacer chain in the imidazolium-based DIL exists in the folded form, but the pyrrolidinium-based DIL remains in the straight chain conformation. Inherently, the outcomes of all of these studies have depicted that the microscopic structural organisations in imidazolium and pyrrolidinium-based DILs are different from each other as well as from their respective mono-cationic counterparts.

Nonlinear measurements of kinetics and generalized dynamical modes. II. Application to a simulation of solvation dynamics in an ionic liquid

Solvation dynamics in ionic liquids show features that are often associated with supercooled liquids, including "stretched" nonexponential relaxation. To better understand the mechanism behind the stretching, the nonlinear mode-correlation methods proposed in Paper I [S. R. Hodge and M. A. Berg, J. Chem. Phys. 155, 024122 (2021)] are applied to a simulation of a prototypical ionic liquid. A full Green's function is recovered. In addition, specific tests for non-Gaussian dynamics are made. No deviations from Gaussian dynamics are found. This finding is incompatible with rate heterogeneity as a cause of the nonexponential relaxation and appears to be in conflict with an earlier multidimensional analysis of the same data. Although this conflict is not resolved here, this work does demonstrate the practicality of mode-correlation analysis in the face of finite datasets and calculations.

Rotation of a Charged Spin Probe in Room-Temperature Ionic Liquids

X-band electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to investigate the rotational diffusion of a stable, positively charged nitroxide 4-trimethylammonium-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl iodide (Cat-1) in a series of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) having alkyl chain lengths from two to eight carbons. The rotation of Cat-1 is anisotropic with the preferential axis of rotation along the NO^• moiety. The Stokes-Einstein-Debye law describes the mean rotational correlation time of Cat-1, assuming that the hydrodynamic radius is smaller than the van der Waals radius of the probe. This implies that the probe rotates freely, experiencing slip boundary condition, which is solvent-dependent. The rotational correlation time of Cat-1 in RTILs can very well be fitted to a power-law functionality with a singular temperature, which suggests that the apparent activation energy of rotation exhibits non-Arrhenius behavior. Compared to the rotation of perdeuterated 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-oxopiperidine-1-oxyl (pDTO), which is neutral, the rotation of Cat-1 is several times slower. The rotational anisotropy, the ratio of the rotational times of pDTO and Cat-1, and the apparent activation energy indicate the transition from a homogeneously globular structure to a spongelike structure when the alkyl chain has four carbons, which is also observed in molecular dynamics computational studies. For the first time, we have been able to show that the rotational correlation time of a solute molecule can be analyzed in terms of the Cohen-Turnbull free volume theory. The Cohen-Turnbull theory fully describes the rotation of Cat-1 in all ionic liquids in the measured temperature range.

Multicomponent Phase Separation in Ternary Mixture Ionic Liquid Electrolytes

We investigate the phase behavior of ternary mixtures of ionic liquid, organic solvent, and lithium salt by molecular dynamics simulations. We find that at room temperature, the electrolyte separates into distinct phases with specific compositions; an ion-rich domain that contains a fraction of solvent molecules and a second domain of pure solvent. The phase separation is shown to be entropy-driven and is independent of lithium salt concentration. Phase separation is only observed at microsecond time scales and greatly affects the transport properties of the electrolyte.

Binary mixtures of ionic liquids: Ideal, non-ideal, or quasi-ideal?

The mixing of ILs provides an opportunity for fine tuning the physiochemical properties of ILs for various applications. However, a suitable mixture having desired properties can only be designed when the physiochemical properties of the mixtures of ILs along with their spectroscopic properties are well understood. With an aim to achieve this objective, three different mixtures with a common anion, namely, [C₂C₁im][C₄C₁im][NTf₂], [C₃C₁pyr][C₄C₁pyr][NTf₂], and [C₃C₁im][C₃C₁pyr][NTf₂], have been investigated in the current study. Investigations have been carried out at the macroscopic level by observing the thermophysical properties, such as molar volume and thermal expansion coefficient, and at the microscopic level with time-resolved fluorescence measurements and the pulse field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique. The results obtained from the thermophysical study have indicated that excess molar volume for imidazolium-based IL-IL mixtures may be linked to the free volume created by the alkyl chain of the imidazolium cation whereas for the mixture of pyrrolidinium ILs, lowering of density can give rise to free volume. Analysis of time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy data has provided clear evidence in favor of the presence of free volume in the binary mixture of ILs. NMR studies have also supported the fluorescence anisotropy data. The outcome of the present investigation reveals that the mixtures show appreciable deviation from ideal behavior and the deviation from the ideal behavior is caused due to the generation of free volume in the resultant mixture, describing these IL mixtures as quasi-ideal rather than ideal or non-ideal.

Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer Reaction and Ground-State Hole Dynamics of 4'-N,N-Dialkylamino-3-hydroxyflavone in Ionic Liquids Studied by Transient Absorption Spectroscopy

The excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) of 4'-N,N-dialkylamino-3-hydroxyflavone (C_nHF) having different alkyl chain lengths (ethyl, butyl, and octyl chains) was investigated in ionic liquids (ILs) by steady-state fluorescence and transient absorption spectroscopy. Upon photoexcitation, C_nHF underwent ESIPT from the normal form to the tautomer form, and dual emissions from both states were detected. For C₄HF and C₈HF, the tautomerization yields determined from the fluorescence intensity ratios increased with the increasing number of alkyl chain carbon atoms in the cation and on reducing the excitation wavelength as reported for C₂HF [K. Suda et al., J. Phys. Chem. B. 117, 12567 (2013)]. The transient absorption spectra of C_nHF were measured at excitation wavelengths of 360, 400, and 450 nm. The ESIPT rate determined from the induced emission of the tautomer was correlated with the tautomerization yield for C₂HF and C₄HF. In addition, the recovery of the ground-state bleach was found to be strongly dependent on the excitation wavelength. This result indicates that the solvated state of the molecule before photoexcitation is dependent on the excitation wavelengths. The time constant for the ground-state relaxation was slower than that for the excited state.

Intramolecular Vibrational Energy Relaxation of CO2 in Cross-Linked Poly(ethylene glycol) Diacrylate-Based Ion Gels

Ultrafast two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2D-IR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to measure carbon dioxide (CO₂) in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([emim][Tf₂N]), cross-linked low-molecular-weight poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), and an ion gel composed of a 50 vol % blend of the two. The center frequency of the antisymmetric stretch, ν₃, of CO₂ shifts monotonically to lower wavenumbers with increasing polymer content, with the largest line width in the ion gel (6 cm^-1). Increasing polymer content slows both spectral diffusion and vibrational energy relaxation (VER) rates. An unexpected excited-state absorbance peak appears in the 2D-IR of cross-linked PEGDA due to VER from the antisymmetric stretch into the bending mode, ν₂. Thirty-two response functions are necessary to describe the observed features in the 2D-IR spectra. Nonlinear least-squares fitting extracts both spectral diffusion and VER rates. In the ion gel, CO₂ exhibits spectral diffusion dynamics that lie between that of the pure compounds. The kinetics of VER reflect both fast excitation and de-excitation of the bending mode, similar to the ionic liquid (IL), and slow overall vibrational population relaxation, similar to the cross-linked polymer. The IL-like and polymer-like dynamics suggest that the CO₂ resides at the interface of the two components in the ion gel.

Heterogeneous Structures of Ionic Liquids as Probed by CO Rotation with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Relaxation Analysis and Molecular Dynamics Simulations

The rotational dynamics of carbon monoxide (CO) in ionic liquids (ILs) was investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation measurements and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. NMR spin-lattice relaxation time measurements were performed for ¹⁷O-enriched CO in 10 ILs (four imidazolium-cation-based, four phosphonium-cation-based, and two ammonium-cation-based ILs, all paired with the bis(trifluorosulfonylmethane)imide anion). In combination with previously reported data for five ILs and viscosity data, our results indicated that the obtained rotational relaxation times (τ_2R) were much smaller than those predicted using the Stokes-Einstein-Debye (SED) theory. For the same viscosity/temperature values, the τ_2R^-1 value increased linearly with increasing carbon number of the alkyl group in the cation. The deviation from the SED equation was due to the insensitivity of τ_2R to the carbon number, even though a higher carbon number generally leads to higher viscosity values for ILs. To investigate the unique rotational properties of CO in the ILs, MD simulations were performed on five representative ILs (two imidazolium, two phosphonium, and one ammonium) containing CO solutes. From rotational correlation function analyses, the CO rotation mainly occurred in a free rotation-like manner within 1 ps, which explained the relative insensitivity of CO rotation to viscosity. In the subsequent time scale (>1 ps), the minor component of the CO rotation was discriminated among different ILs. It was strongly suggested that, because CO preferably locates in the outer part of the alkyl groups in the cation, the slow CO rotation is correlated with the outer alkyl dynamics, which are decoupled from the whole cation rotation.

Dynamics of Dicyanamide in Ionic Liquids is Dominated by Local Interactions

The dynamics of probe molecules is commonly used to investigate the structural dynamics of room-temperature ionic liquids; however, the extent to which this dynamics reflects the dynamics of the ionic liquids or is probe specific has remained debated. Here, we explore to what extent the vibrational and rotational dynamics of the dicyanamide anion, a common ionic liquid anion, correlates with the structural relaxation of ionic liquids. We use polarization-resolved, ultrafast infrared spectroscopy to probe the temperature- and probe-concentration-dependent dynamics of samples with small amounts of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ([emim]⁺) dicyanamide ([DCA]⁻) dissolved in four [emim]⁺-based ionic liquids with tetrafluoroborate ([BF₄]⁻), bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([NTf₂]⁻), ethylsufate ([EtSO₄]⁻), and triflate ([OTf]⁻) as anions. The transient spectra after broad-band excitation at 2000–2300 cm^–1, resonant with the symmetric and antisymmetric C≡N stretching vibrations, initially contain oscillatory signatures due to the vibrational coherence between both modes. Vibrational population relaxation occurs on two distinct time scales, ∼6–7 and ∼15–20 ps. The vibrational dynamics is rather insensitive to the details of the ionic liquid anion and temperature, except for the slow vibrational relaxation component. The decay of the excitation anisotropy, a measure of the rotational dynamics of [DCA]⁻, markedly depends on temperature, and the obtained decay time exhibits an activation energy of ∼15–21 kJ/mol. Remarkably, neither the rotation time nor the activation energy can be simply explained by the variation of the macroscopic viscosity. Hence, our results suggest that the dynamics of dicyanamide is only in part representative of the ionic liquid structural dynamics. Rather, the dynamics of the probe anion seems to be determined by the specific interaction of [DCA]⁻ with the ionic liquid’s ions for the class of [emim]⁺-based ionic liquids studied here.

Atomic-scale investigation of the heterogeneous structure and ionic distribution in an ionic liquid using scanning transmission electron microscopy

Ionic liquids show characteristic properties derived from them being composed of only molecular ions, and have recently been used as solvents for chemical reactions and as electrolytes for electrochemical devices. The liquid structures, i.e., ionic distributions, form when solutes are dissolved in ionic liquids and fundamentally affect the reactions and transfer efficiency in such solutions. In this study, we directly observe the liquid structure in a solution of the long-chain ionic liquid 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (C₈mim Br) and barium stearate (Ba(C₁₇H₃₅COO)₂) using the annular dark-field method of scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM). The ADF image shows a 10 nm-scale heterogeneity in the image intensity, which reflects the heterogeneous ionic distribution in the solution. The number density distributions of all the component ions (C₈mim⁺, Br⁻, Ba²⁺, and C₁₇H₃₅COO⁻) were estimated from the ADF image intensity and then visualized. These ionic distribution maps depicted the spatial relationships between the ions at the sub-nanometer scale and revealed that the heterogeneity is largely derived from the large differences in size, charge distributions, and van der Waals interactions.

Ionic liquids show characteristic properties derived from being composed of only molecular ions. The numbers of all constituent molecules and ions were quantitatively estimated from the image intensity and the origin of the heterogeneity in the ionic liquid was discussed.

Differences in the behavior of dicationic and monocationic ionic liquids as revealed by time resolved-fluorescence, NMR and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy

With an aim to understand the behavior in terms of the intermolecular interactions, structure and dynamics of dicationic and monocationic ionic liquids (ILs), two imidazolium-based dicationic ionic liquids (DILs), 1,8-bis-(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)octane bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([C₈(mim)₂][NTf₂]₂), 1,9-bis-(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)nonane bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([C₉(mim)₂][NTf₂]₂), and one monocationic ionic liquid (MIL), 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([C₄(mim)][NTf₂]), have been investigated through combined fluorescence, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), NMR and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). The DILs were synthesized by following a standard synthetic protocol and subsequently characterized by different analytical techniques. Steady state absorption, emission and EPR spectroscopic data reveal that DILs are less polar compared to MIL. The polarities of the DILs and MIL were found to be close to those of acetonitrile and short chain alcohols, respectively. The excitation wavelength dependent emission data reveals that DILs are more micro-heterogeneous in nature than MIL. The rotational diffusion of two organic solutes, perylene and 8-methoxypyrene-1,3,6-sulfonate (MPTS), were examined in the DILs and MIL. The rotational diffusion data for perylene and MPTS were analyzed in light of the Stokes-Einstein-Debye (SED) hydrodynamic theory. The rotation of perylene in the DILs was observed to be relatively faster to that in the MIL, and it goes beyond the limit predicted by the SED theory. In order to explain the rotational motion of perylene in DILs, the data was analyzed further by invoking quasi-hydrodynamic theory. The observed rotational behavior of perylene has been explained by considering the fact that perylene is located in the nonpolar region of ILs, and larger solvent molecules (DILs) induce a lower friction to the rotating solute. Interestingly, unlike perylene, rotations of MPTS in both of the ILs were observed to be much hindered indicating a relatively stronger MPTS-IL interaction than perylene-IL interaction. More interestingly, rotation of MPTS was observed to be faster in the DILs than that in the MIL despite the fact that DILs are more viscous than MILs. Relatively faster rotation of MPTS in DILs has been explained by resorting to NMR and FCS studies. The outcomes of the NMR and FCS studies revealed that DILs in the experimental condition exist in their folded form and because of this structural restriction of DILs it becomes difficult for the bulky MPTS to make stronger hydrogen bonding interactions with DILs, which eventually makes the rotation of MPTS in DILs faster. Essentially, the outcomes of all of these studies have demonstrated that the behavior of DILs is quite different to that of the usual MILs.

Ultrafast dynamics of ionic liquids in colloidal dispersion

Ionic liquid (IL)-surfactant complexes have significance both in applications and fundamental research, but their underlying dynamics are not well understood. We apply polarization-controlled two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2D-IR) to study the dynamics of [BMIM][SCN]/surfactant/solvent model systems. We examine the effect of the choice of surfactants and solvent, and the IL-to-surfactant ratio (W-value), with a detailed analysis of the orientation and structural dynamics of each system. Different surfactants create very different environments for the entrapped ILs, ranging from a semi-static micro-environment to a fluxional environment that evolves even faster than the bulk IL. The oil-phase also clearly affects the microscopic dynamics. The anisotropy decay for entrapped ILs completes within 10 ps, which is similar to free thiocyanate ion in water, while a significant reorientation-induced spectral diffusion (RISD) effect is observed. The entrapped ionic liquid are highly dynamic for all W-values, and no core-shell structure is observed. We hypothesize that, instead of an ionic liquid-reverse micelle (IL-RM), the microscopic structure of this system is small colloidal dispersions or pairs of IL and surfactants. A detailed analysis of the polarization-controlled 2D-IR spectra of AOT system reveals a potential ion-exchange mechanism.

Is Solute Rotation in an Ionic Liquid Influenced by the Addition of Glucose?

Fluorescence anisotropy measurements and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to understand the specific interactions of two structurally similar nondipolar solutes, 2,5-dimethyl-1,4-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DMDPP) and 1,4-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DPP), with neat 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([BMIM][N(CN)₂]) and also in the presence of glucose. It has been observed that the measured reorientation times of DMDPP in neat [BMIM][N(CN)₂] follow the predictions of the Stokes-Einstein-Debye hydrodynamic theory with slip boundary condition. Addition of glucose (0.075 and 0.15 mole fraction) has no bearing on the rotational diffusion of the solute apart from the viscosity related effects. In contrast, the reorientation times of DPP in neat [BMIM][N(CN)₂] obey stick boundary condition as the hydrogen bond donating solute experiences specific interactions with the dicyanamide anion. No influence of the additive can be noticed on the rotational diffusion of DPP at 0.075 mole fraction of glucose. However, at 0.15 mole fraction of glucose, the reorientation times of the solute at a given viscosity and temperature decrease by 15-40% compared to those obtained in the neat ionic liquid. MD simulations indicate that each DPP molecule hydrogen bonds with two dicyanamide anions in neat ionic liquid. The simulations also reveal that, at 0.15 mole fraction of glucose, the concentration of anions hydrogen bonded to glucose increases significantly; therefore, the percentage of solute molecules that can form hydrogen bonds with two dicyanamide anions decreases to 84, which leads to faster rotation of DPP.

Dynamic Heterogeneity and Flexibility of the Alkyl Chain in Pyridinium-Based Ionic Liquids

Changing the number of carbon atoms in the substituents of ionic liquids (ILs) is a way to shift the balance between Coulomb and van der Waals forces and, thus, to tune physicochemical properties. Here we address this topic on the microscopic level by employing quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) and provide information about the stochastic ionic motions in the N-alkylpyridinium based ILs in a relatively expanded time range, from short time (subpicosecond) particle rattling to long time diffusive regime (hundreds of picoseconds). We have systematically investigated the effect of the alkyl chain length on the picosecond dynamics by employing partial deuteration of the samples and varying the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl substituent. The localized dynamics of the side groups have appeared to be enhanced for bulkier cations, which is opposite to the trend observed for the translational motion. This result highlights the role of the conformational flexibility of the alkyl group on the dynamical properties of ILs.

Understanding Structure-Property Correlation in Monocationic and Dicationic Ionic Liquids through Combined Fluorescence and Pulsed-Field Gradient (PFG) and Relaxation NMR Experiments

Steady state, time-resolved fluorescence and NMR experiments are carried out to gain deeper insights into the structure-property correlation in structurally similar monocationic and dicationic room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). The excitation wavelength dependent fluorescence response of fluorophore in 1-methy-3-propyllimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide [C3MIm][NTf2] is found to be different from that of 1,6-bis(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)hexane bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide [C6(MIm)2][NTf2]2 and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide [C6MIm][NTf2]. The outcomes of the present solvent dynamics study in [C3MIm][NTf2] when compared with those in [C6(MIm)2][NTf2]2 and in [C6MIm][NTf2] from our previous studies (Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2014, 16, 12918-12928) indicate the involvement of dipolar rotation of imidazolium cation during solvation. To correlate the findings of solvation dynamics study with the dipolar rotation of the imidazolium ring, pulsed-field gradient (PFG)-NMR technique for translational diffusion coefficient measurement and (1)H as well as (19)F spin-lattice relaxation measurements are employed. NMR investigation reveals that an ultrafast component of solvation can be related to the dipolar rotation of imidazolium cation; hence, the role of dipolar rotation of cations in governing the dynamics of solvation in ILs cannot be ignored. Analysis of the rotational relaxation dynamics data by the Stokes-Einstein-Debye hydrodynamic theory unveils distinctive features of solute-solvent interaction in [C3MIm][NTf2] and [C6(MIm)2][NTf2]2.
