Abstract
Taking advantage of V-shaped ligands, a ZnII metallocryptand, namely {[Zn2(didp)2(m-bdc)2]}n, (1) [didp = 2,8-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-dibenzothiophene and m-H2bdc = isophthalic acid], has been hydrothermally synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals a 26-membered butterfly-type metallomacrocycle [Zn2(didp)2]. One m-bdc2- ligand bridges [Zn2(didp)2] units to form a laterally non-symmetric [Zn2(didp)2(m-bdc)] metallocryptand with an exo-exo conformation. Another crystallographically independent m-bdc2- functions as a secondary synthon to bridge discrete metallocryptands into a 1D zigzag chain architecture. Undoubtedly, the choice of two matched ligands in this work is crucial for metallocryptand construction and structure expansion. Interestingly, a rare helical chain with two flexures in one single L and/or R strand is observed. Another important feature is the C-O...π interactions, by which the dimensionality extension of (1) can be induced. Fluorescence measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations illustrate that the emission of (1) can probably be attributed to ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT).

Abstract
Structural and theoretical studies of four novel 5,6-dehydronorcantharidine (DNCA)/norcantharidine (NCA) derivatives, namely (3aR,4S,7R,7aS)-2-phenyl-3a,4,7,7a-tetrahydro-4,7-epoxy-1H-isoindole-1,3(2H)-dione, C14H11NO3 (DNCA-A), (3aR,4S,7R,7aS)-2-(4-nitrophenyl)-3a,4,7,7a-tetrahydro-4,7-epoxy-1H-isoindole-1,3(2H)-dione, C14H10N2O5 (DNCA-NA), (3aR,4S,7R,7aS)-2-(4-nitrophenyl)-3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-1H-4,7-epoxyisoindole-1,3(2H)-dione, C14H12N2O5 (NCA-NA), and (3aR,4S,7R,7aS)-2-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-1H-4,7-epoxyisoindole-1,3(2H)-dione, C10H13NO4 (NCA-AE), are reported. The supramolecular interactions and single-crystal structural characteristics of these molecules, together with the crystal structures of four other similar molecules, i.e. NCA-A (the 4-phenyl derivative of NCA-NA), DNCA-AE (the 5,6-unsaturated derivative of NCA-AE), DNCA and NCA, were analysed. Surprisingly, DNCA-A and NCA-A, as well as DNCA-NA and NCA-NA, proved to be isomorphic, while DNCA-AE and NCA-AE, as well as DNCA and NCA, have very different crystal structures. These are very rare isostructural examples between unsaturated and saturated oxanorbornene/oxanorbornane derivatives. To further explore how noncovalent interactions (NCIs) affect the degree of isomorphism in this particular series of rigid molecules where there is a fairly limited conformational degree of freedom, all four pairs of crystal structures were analyzed in parallel. The differentiation in NCIs which entails the packing mode of similar molecules is supported by energy calculations based on real or exchanged crystal structures. Our results show that minor structural differences may result in very different supramolecular interactions, and so lead to altered packing modes in the crystalline solids. Even if isostructurality sometimes occurs, the possibility of various molecular packing types cannot be ruled out. On the other hand, isomorphism may just be the result of kinetic possibilities instead of relative thermodynamic stabilities. Though crystal structure prediction is formidable, the comparison method based on existing crystal structures and quantum calculations can be used to predict the probability of isomorphism. This understanding will help us to design new norbornene derivatives with specified structures.

Abstract
An unexpected global disorder (co-existing rotational disorder and glide disorder) has been observed during an X-ray investigation of the crystal structure of (E)-[1-(biphenyl-4-yl)ethylidene]hydrazine, C14H14N2, at room temperature. When the temperature decreases to 273 K, the disorder disappears, but the quality of the data set is low. The diffraction data were collected again at 110 K. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis and polarizing-microscopy experiments, as well as a fourth set of single-crystal data collected at 283 K, proved that the order–disorder transformation occurs continuously. The analyses of these crystal structures and full-range relaxed potential energy surface scans showed that this kind of global disorder is not very difficult to achieve inside the crystal. Experimental and theoretical studiesviaUV–Vis and fluorescence spectra impart an understanding on the prediction methods of optical properties, which are essential for the rational design of biphenyl-based materials with pre-defined properties.

Abstract
A global glide disorder has been discovered during an X-ray investigation of the crystal structure of (Z)-2-[(E)-(4-methoxybenzylidene)hydrazinylidene]-1,2-diphenylethanone (MHDE, C22H18N2O2) at room temperature. In another crystal, however, such disorder disappears (still at room temperature). Even though the disorder may be partly due to the poor quality of the harvested crystal, the structure can shed light on the nature of disorder. With the help of quantum chemical calculations, it is found that the global disorder seems to be connected with the need for stabilization of the somewhat rigid but mobile and unstable molecular structure. The most relevant feature driving the packing of the disordered structure concerns the slight perturbations (such as glide) of two or more disorder components (fractional occupancies) distributed throughout the crystal.

Abstract
The specific folding pattern and function of RNA molecules lies in various weak interactions, in addition to the strong base-base pairing and stacking. One of these relatively weak interactions, characterized by the stacking of the O4' atom of a ribose on top of the heterocycle ring of a nucleobase, has been known to occur but has largely been ignored in the description of RNA structures. We identified 2015 ribose-base stacking interactions in a high-resolution set of non-redundant RNA crystal structures. They are widespread in structured RNA molecules and are located in structural motifs other than regular stems. Over 50% of them involve an adenine, as we found ribose-adenine contacts to be recurring elements in A-minor motifs. Fewer than 50% of the interactions involve a ribose and a base of neighboring residues, while approximately 30% of them involve a ribose and a nucleobase at least four residues apart. Some of them establish inter-domain or inter-molecular contacts and often implicate functionally relevant nucleotides. In vacuo ribose-nucleobase stacking interaction energies were calculated by quantum mechanics methods. Finally, we found that lone pair-π stacking interactions also occur between ribose and aromatic amino acids in RNA-protein complexes.

Abstract
The σ-hole and π-hole are the regions with positive surface electrostatic potential on the molecule entity; the former specifically refers to the positive region of a molecular entity along extension of the Y-Ge/P/Se/X covalent σ-bond (Y = electron-rich group; Ge/P/Se/X = Groups IV-VII), while the latter refers to the positive region in the direction perpendicular to the σ-framework of the molecular entity. The directional noncovalent interactions between the σ-hole or π-hole and the negative or electron-rich sites are named σ-hole bond or π-hole bond, respectively. The contributions from electrostatic, charge transfer, and other terms or Coulombic interaction to the σ-hole bond and π-hole bond were reviewed first followed by a brief discussion on the interplay between the σ-hole bond and the π-hole bond as well as application of the two types of noncovalent interactions in the field of anion recognition. It is expected that this review could stimulate further development of the σ-hole bond and π-hole bond in theoretical exploration and practical application in the future.

Abstract
Mixed 3d-4f 12-azametallacrown-4 complexes, [Mn2 Ln2 (OH)2 (hppt)4 (OAc)2 (DMF)2 ]⋅2 DMF⋅H2 O [Ln=Dy (1), Er (2), Yb (3), Tb (4) and Y (5), H2 hppt=3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-5-(pyrazin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole)], were synthesized by reactions of H2 hppt with Mn(OAc)2 ⋅4 H2 O and Ln(NO3 )3 ⋅6 H2 O. This is the first 3d-4f azametallacrown family to incorporate Ln ions into the ring sets. These isostructural complexes exhibit alternating arrangements of two Mn and two Ln ions in the rings with each pair of metal centers bound by an NN group and μ2 -O bridging. Magnetic measurements revealed dominant antiferromagnetic interactions between metal centers, and frequency-dependent out-of-phase (${\chi {^\prime}{^\prime}_{\rm{M}} }$) signals below 4 K suggest slow relaxation of magnetization.

Abstract
The ternary complexes X(-) · 1 · YF (1 = triazine, X = Cl, Br and I, Y = H, Cl, Br, I, PH2 and AsH2) have been investigated by MP2 calculations to understand the noncovalently electron-withdrawing effects on anion-arene interactions. The results indicate that in binary complexes (1 · X(-)), both weak σ-type and anion-π complexes can be formed for Cl(-) and Br(-), but only anion-π complex can be formed for I(-). Moreover, the hydrogen-bonding complex is the global minimum for all three halides in binary complexes. However, in ternary complexes, anion-π complex become unstable and only σ complex can retain in many cases for Cl(-) and Br(-). Anion-π complex keeps stable only when YF = HF. In contrast with binary complexes, σ complex become the global minimum for Cl(-) and Br(-) in ternary complexes. These changes in binding mode and strength are consistent with the results of covalently electron-withdrawing effects. However, in contrast with the covalently electron-withdrawing substituents, Cl(-) and Br(-) can attack the aromatic carbon atom to form a strong σ complex when the noncovalently electron-withdrawing effect is induced by halogen bonding. The binding behavior for I(-) is different from that for Cl(-) and Br(-) in two aspects. First, the anion-π complex for I(-) can also keep stable when the noncovalent interaction is halogen bonding. Second, the anion-π complex for I(-) is the global minimum when it can retain as a stable structure.

Abstract
In the centrosymmetric dinuclear title compound, [Hg(2)Cl(4)(C(6)H(8)N(2))(2)], the Hg(II) ion is four-coordinated by one pyridine N atom from a 2-amino-4-methyl-pyridine ligand, one terminal Cl atom and two bridging Cl atoms. A distorted tetra-hedral geometry is formed around each Hg(II) ion. The crystal packing is stabilized by intra- and inter-molecular N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonding. There are also π-π stacking inter-actions in the structure, with centroid-to-centroid distances of 3.594 (6) Å.

Abstract
The reactions of the tridentate hydrazone ligand, N'-[1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene]acetohydrazide (HL), obtained by condensation of 2-acetylpyridine with acetic hyadrazide, with copper nitrate trihydrate in the presence of thiocyanate, or with CuCl2 produce two distinct coordination compounds, namely a one-dimensional helical coordination chain of [CuL(NCS)] n (1) units, and a doubly chlorido-bridged dinuclear complex [Cu2L2Cl2] (2) (where L=CH3C(O)=N-N=CCH3C5H4N). Single-crystal X-ray structural determination studies reveal that in complex 1, a deprotonated hydrazone ligand L(-) coordinates a copper(II) ion that is bridged to two neighbouring metal centres by SCN(-) anions, generating a one-dimensional helical coordination chain. In complex 2, two symmetry-related, adjacent copper(II) coordination entities are doubly chlorido-bridged, producing a dicopper entity with a Cu⋅⋅⋅Cu distance of 3.402 (1) Å. The two coordination compounds have been fully characterised by elemental analysis, spectroscopic techniques including IR, UV-vis and electron paramagnetic resonance, and variable-temperature magnetic studies. The biological effects of 1 and 2 on the viability of human colorectal carcinoma cells (COLO-205 and HT-29) were evaluated using an MTT assay, and the results indicate that these complexes induce a decrease in cell-population growth of human colorectal carcinoma cells with apoptosis.

Abstract
Three Co(II)-malonate complexes, namely, (C(5)H(7)N(2))(4)[Co(C(3)H(2)O(4))(2)(H(2)O)(2)](NO(3))(2) (1), (C(5)H(7)N(2))(4)[Co(C(3)H(2)O(4))(2)(H(2)O)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (2), and (C(5)H(7)N(2))(4)[Co(C(3)H(2)O(4))(2)(H(2)O)(2)](PF(6))(2) (3) [C(5)H(7)N(2) = protonated 2-aminopyridine, C(3)H(4)O(4) = malonic acid, NO(3)(-) = nitrate, ClO(4)(-) = perchlorate, PF(6)(-) = hexafluorophosphate], have been synthesized from purely aqueous media, and their crystal structures have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. A thorough analysis of Hirshfeld surfaces and fingerprint plots facilitates a comparison of intermolecular interactions in 1-3, which are crucial in building supramolecular architectures. When these complexes are structurally compared with their previously reported analogous Ni(II) or Mg(II) compounds, a very interesting feature regarding the role of counteranions has emerged. This phenomenon can be best described as anion-induced formation of extended supramolecular networks of the type lone pair-π/π-π/π-anion-π/π-lone pair and lone pair-π/π-π/π-anion involving various weak forces like lone pair-π, π-π, and anion-π interactions. The strength of these π contacts has been estimated using DFT calculations (M06/6-31+G*), and the formation energy of the supramolecular networks has been also evaluated. The influence of the anion (NO(3)(-), ClO(4)(-), and PF(6)(-)) on the total interaction energy of the assembly is also studied.
