Silver Colloids and Macroemulsions of Metal Interfacial Colloidal Films: Interaction with Dithizone

Facile green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using seed aqueous extract of Pistacia atlantica and its antibacterial activity

In the present work, we describe the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) using seed aqueous extract of Pistacia atlantica (PA) and its antibacterial activity. UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infra red spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray energy dispersive spectrophotometer (EDAX) were performed to ascertain the formation of Ag-NPs. It was observed that the growths of Ag-NPs are stopped within 35 min of reaction time. The synthesized Ag-NPs were characterized by a peak at 446 nm in the UV-visible spectrum. XRD confirmed the crystalline nature of the nanoparticles of 27 nm size. The XRD peaks at 38°, 44°, 64° and 77° can be indexed to the (111), (200), (220) and (311) Bragg's reflections of cubic structure of metallic silver, respectively. The FTIR result clearly showed that the extracts containing OH as a functional group act in capping the nanoparticles synthesis. Antibacterial activities of Ag-NPs were tested against the growth of Gram-positive (S. aureus) using SEM. The inhibition was observed in the Ag-NPs against S. aureus. The results suggest that the synthesized Ag-NPs act as an effective antibacterial agent. It is confirmed that Ag-NPs are capable of rendering high antibacterial efficacy and hence has a great potential in the preparation of used drugs against bacterial diseases. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), indicated that, the most strains of S. aureus was damaged and extensively disappeared by addition of Ag-NPs. The results confirmed that the (PA) is a very good eco friendly and nontoxic source for the synthesis of Ag-NPs as compared to the conventional chemical/physical methods.

Photochemically mediated synthesis of a gold colloid by dithizone and its application in the amperometric sensing of thiocyanate

Au–DTZH was synthesized by a one-step photochemical route and used for the amperometric sensing of thiocyanate. The modified electrode has a sensitivity of 16 nA nM⁻¹ and a limit of detection of 23.35 nM at a potential of 0.55 V vs. Ag/AgCl.

Studies on the kinetics of growth of silver nanoparticles in different surfactant solutions

Silver nanoparticles were prepared in aqueous silver nitrate solution using hydrazine as reducing agents in presence of two ionic surfactants (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide; CTAB and sodium dodecyl sulfate; SDS) and one non-ionic surfactant (Triton X-100). The reaction rate was determined spectrophotometrically. The nature of the head group of these surfactants is responsible for the formation of stable, yellow and transparent silver sol. For a certain reaction time, i.e., 20 min, the absorbance of reaction mixture first increased until it reached a maximum, then decreased with [hydrazine]. The reaction follows first-order kinetics with respect to each in [hydrazine] and [Ag(+)]. The results suggest formation of a complex between silver(I) and hydrazine, decomposes in a rate-determining step, leading in the formation of a free radical, which again reacts with the silver(I) in a subsequent fast step to yield the products. The transmission electron microscopic (TEM) images show that CTAB stabilized silver nanoparticles are spherical and of uniform particle size, and the average particle size is about 15 nm.

Thiosalicylic Acid-Functionalized Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized in One-Phase System

A series of silver colloidal dispersions were prepared by two protocols, i.e., addition of the reductant-NaBH(4) and the stabilizer-thiosalicylic acid (TSA) into Ag(+) solution simultaneously or successively. The products were compared and characterized by TEM, electrochemical measurements, XPS, UV-vis, and FT-IR spectra. The size distributions of the Ag nanoparticles prepared by the former and latter protocols are bimodal and monodisperse, respectively. The analytic results of UV-vis spectra coincide with the TEM observation. A tentative explanation was given to the relationship between particle sizes and different synthetic protocols. The changes of the reduction potential of the reductant invoked a variance in particle diameter and size distribution. Electrochemical measurements corroborated our assumption. The composition information of TSA-derived silver nanoparticles was obtained from XPS and FT-IR spectroscopic measurements.
