Ultrafast Study of the Photodissociation and Recombination of Aqueous O3-

Visible spectrum photofragmentation of O₃⁻(H₂O)n, n ≤ 16

Photofragmentation of ozonide solvated in water clusters, O3(-)(H2O)n, n ≤ 16, has been studied as a function of photon energy as well as the degree of solvation. Using mass selection, the effect of the presence of the solvent molecule on the O3(-) photodissociation process is assessed one solvent molecule at a time. The O3(-) acts as a visible light chromophore within the water cluster, namely the O3(-)(H2O) total photodissociation cross-section exhibits generally the same photon energy dependence as isolated O3(-) throughout the visible wavelength range studied (430-620 nm). With the addition of a single solvent molecule, new photodissociation pathways are opened, including the production of recombined O3(-). As the degree of solvation of the parent anion increases, recombination to O3(-)-based products accounts for close to 40% of photoproducts by n = 16. The remainder of the photoproducts exist as O(-)-based; no O2(-)-based products are observed. Upper bounds on the O3(-) solvation energy (530 meV) and the O(-)-OO bond dissociation energy in the cluster (1.06 eV) are derived.

Photodissociation of CH2I2 and subsequent electron transfer in solution

We studied photoinduced reactions of diiodomethane (CH(2)I(2)) upon excitation at 268 nm in acetonitrile and hexane by subpicosecond-nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The transient spectra involve two absorption bands centered at around 400 (intense) and 540 nm (weak). The transients probed over the range 340-740 nm show common time profiles consisting of a fast rise (<200 fs), a fast decay ( approximately 500 fs), and a slow rise. The two fast components were independent of solute concentration, whereas the slow rise became faster (7-50 ps) when the concentration in both solutions was increased. We assigned the fast components to the generation of a CH(2)I radical by direct dissociation of the photoexcited CH(2)I(2) and its disappearance by subsequent primary geminate recombination. The concentration-dependent slow rise produced the absorption bands centered at 400 and 540 nm. The former consists of different time-dependent bands at 385 and 430 nm. The band near 430 nm grew first and was assigned to a charge-transfer (CT) complex, CH(2)I(2) (delta+)I(delta-), formed by a photofragment I atom and the solute CH(2)I(2) molecule. The CT complex is followed by full electron transfer, which then develops the band of the ion pair CH(2)I(2) (+)I(-) at 385 nm on the picosecond timescale. On the nanosecond scale, I(3) (-) was generated after decay of the ion pair. The reaction scheme and kinetics were elucidated by the time-resolved absorption spectra and the reaction rate equations. We ascribed concentration-dependent dynamics to the CT-complex formation in pre-existing aggregates of CH(2)I(2) and analyzed how solutes are aggregated at a given bulk concentration by evaluating a relative local concentration. Whereas the local concentration in hexane monotonically increased as a function of the bulk concentration, that in acetonitrile gradually became saturated. The number of CH(2)I(2) molecules that can participate in CT-complex formation has an upper limit that depends on the size of aggregation or spatial restriction in the neighboring region of the initially photoexcited CH(2)I(2). Such conditions were achieved at lower concentrations in acetonitrile than in hexane.

On the photolysis of simple anions and neutral molecules as sources of O−/OH, SOx−and Cl in aqueous solution

This contribution examines the aqueous phase photolysis processes of simple anions such as nitrate, nitrite, peroxodisulfate and neutral molecules such as H2O2. The review includes new results on absolute effective quantum yields for the photodissociation processes of NO3(-), NO2(-), S2O8(2-), HSO5(-), S2O6(2-), HOCl, and chloroacetone in an aqueous solution. The quantum yields for the photolysis of nitrate and nitrite have also been determined as a function of temperature. Models to interpret the wavelength and the temperature dependencies of the quantum yields for the different systems are discussed and a simple model treatment is developed to quantify the effects of (i) impulse conservation, (ii) electrostatic interaction (e.g., ion-dipole, dipole-dipole and coulomb interaction between the photofragments directly after photolytic fragmentation), and (iii) diffusion and recombination. The combined impulse-interaction-diffusion (IID) model is compared to the experimentally observed effective radical formation quantum yields and reasonable agreement is found for a number of systems. It is shown that the temperature dependencies for effective quantum yields of photolysis processes in aqueous solution are not only governed by the temperature dependence of the viscosity of water but also determined by the temperature dependence of the rate constants of the photofragment recombination reactions.

Time-resolved infrared absorption studies of the solvent-dependent vibrational relaxation dynamics of chlorine dioxide

We report a series of time-resolved infrared absorption studies on chlorine dioxide (OClO) dissolved in H2O, D2O, and acetonitrile. Following the photoexcitation at 401 nm, the evolution in optical density for frequencies corresponding to asymmetric stretch of OClO is measured with a time resolution of 120+/-50 fs. The experimentally determined optical-density evolution is compared with theoretical models of OClO vibrational relaxation derived from collisional models as well as classical molecular-dynamics (MD) studies. The vibrational relaxation rates in D2O are reduced by a factor of 3 relative to H2O consistent with the predictions of MD. This difference reflects modification of the frequency-dependent solvent-solute coupling accompanying isotopic substitution of the solvent. Also, the geminate-recombination quantum yield for the primary photofragments resulting in the reformation of ground-state OClO is reduced in D2O relative to H2O. It is proposed that this reduction reflects enhancement of the dissociation rate accompanying vibrational excitation along the asymmetric-stretch coordinate. In contrast to H2O and D2O, the vibrational-relaxation dynamics in acetonitrile are not well described by the theoretical models. Reproduction of the optical-density evolution in acetonitrile requires significant modification of the frequency-dependent solvent-solute coupling derived from MD. It is proposed that this modification reflects vibrational-energy transfer from the asymmetric stretch of OClO to the methyl rock of acetonitrile. In total, the results presented here provide a detailed description of the solvent-dependent geminate-recombination and vibrational-relaxation dynamics of OClO in solution.

Degradation of dicarboxylic acids (C2-C9) upon liquid-phase reactions with O3 and its atmospheric implications

Aerosols are considered major players in climate change and represent health hazards. Dicarboxylic acids are among a major class of components that form secondary organic atmospheric aerosols. To understand the atmospheric transformation of these compounds, kinetic studies on the ozonolysis and the photoinduced ozonolysis (lambda > or = 250 nm) of aqueous solutions of seven (C2-C9) dicarboxylic acids, which have been identified in atmospheric aerosols, were performed using Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The measured apparent rate constants for dicarboxylic acids in 0.1 mol L(-1) aqueous solutions at 298 +/- 2 K are as follows: oxalic, (2.7 +/- 0.1) x 10(-2); malonic, (5.5 +/- 0.1); succinic, (6.7 +/- 0.4) x 10(-4); glutaric, (1.3 +/- 0.2) x 10(-3); adipic, (1.7 +/- 0.1) x 10(-3); pimelic, (4.4 +/- 0.1) x 10(-3); and pinic, (2.5 +/- 0.1) x 10(-2) (L mol(-1) s(-1)). An empirical equation is provided to estimate the ozonolysis rate constant of dicarboxylic acids containing more than three carbon atoms for which no experimental data exists. A mechanism for malonic acid ozonolysis, which explains its fast ozonolysis rate constant, is also suggested. The implications of our results to atmospheric chemistry indicate that ozonolysis and photoinduced ozonolysis are not significant removal pathways for dicarboxylic acids.
