Influence of Citric Acid Treatment on the Surface Acid Properties of Zeolite Beta

Direct Conversion of CO2 into Alcohols Using Cu-Based Zeolite Catalysts

The direct hydrogenation of CO2 into alcohols is an attractive but challenging catalytic reaction. Herein, it was shown that Cu nanoparticles supported on MFI and BEA zeolites have high catalytic activity and selectivity for converting CO2 into ethanol and isopropanol. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of introducing mesopores via carbon templating and encapsulating the Cu nanoparticles via subsequent recrystallization. All the catalysts were characterized by N2 physisorption, XRD, SEM, TEM, NH3 TPD, XPS, and XRF, before we tested them in a high-pressure water-filled autoclave with a constant partial pressure of CO2 (1 MPa) and an increasing partial pressure of H2 (3-5 MPa). In general, the mesoporous zeolite catalysts resulted in a higher CO2 conversion and selectivity toward ethanol than their non-mesoporous equivalents, while the recrystallized catalyst with encapsulated Cu nanoparticles had a higher selectivity towards isopropanol. For example, Cu@m-S1 showed the highest isopropanol productivity among the recrystallized mesoporous zeolites, corresponding to 20.51 mmol g-1  h-1 under the given reaction conditions. These findings highlight the importance of mesopores in zeolite catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to alcohols and point a new direction for further research and development.

Study of CA-treated ZSM-22 zeolite with enhanced catalytic performance in the hydroisomerization of long-chain n-dodecane

Pt catalysts on citric acid treated ZSM-22 zeolites exhibited enhanced n-dodecane conversion (89.7%) and C₁₂-isomer yield (68.8%) compared with the parent ZSM-22 zeolite (19.6% and 16.4%).

Using ultrasound to improve the sequential post-synthesis modification method for making mesoporous Y zeolites

Mesoporous Y zeolites were prepared by the sequential chemical dealumination (using chelating agents such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, H4EDTA, and citric acid aqueous solutions) and alkaline desilication (using sodium hydroxide, NaOH, aqueous solutions) treatments. Specifically, the ultrasound-assisted alkaline treatment (i.e., ultrasonic treatment) was proposed as the alternative to conventional alkaline treatments which are performed under hydrothermal conditions. In comparison with the hydrothermal alkaline treatment, the ultrasonic treatment showed the comparatively enhanced efficiency (with the reduced treatment time, i.e., 5 min vs. 30 min, all with 0.2 mol·L−1 NaOH at 65°C) in treating the deal-uminated Y zeolites for creating mesoporosity. For example, after the treatment of a dealuminated zeolite Y (using 0.1 mol·L−1 H4EDTA at 100°C for 6 h), the ultrasonic treatment produced the mesoporous zeolite Y with the specific external surface area (Sexternal) of 160 m2·g·−1and mesopore volume (Vmeso) of 0.22 cm3·g−1, being slightly higher than that by the conventional method (i.e., Sextemal= 128 m2·g−1 and Vmeso = 0.19 cm3·g−1). The acidic property and catalytic activity (in catalytic cracking of n-octane) of mesoporous Y zeolites obtained by the two methods were comparable. The ultrasonic desilication treatment was found to be generic, also being effective to treat the dealuminated Y zeolites by citric acid. Additionally, the first step of chemical dealumination treatment was crucial to enable the effective creation of mesopores in the parent Y zeolite (with a silicon-to-aluminium ratio, Si/Al = 2.6) regardless of the subsequent alkaline desilication treatment (i.e., ultrasonic or hydrothermal). Therefore, appropriate selection of the condition of the chemical dealumination treatment based on the property of parent zeolites, such as Si/Al ratio and crystallinity, is important for making mesoporous zeolites effectively.

Acidity Adjustment of HZSM-5 Zeolites by Dealumination and Realumination with Steaming and Citric Acid Treatments

This article describes a novel method for acidity adjustment of HZSM-5 zeolites with steaming and citric acid treatments and demonstrates the realumination effect of citric acid on HZSM-5 zeolites dealuminated by steaming. A series of modified HZSM-5 zeolites were prepared by streaming and/or acid treatments and characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), (27)Al MAS NMR spectroscopy, hydroxyl infrared spectroscopy (OH-IR), pyridine-adsorbed infrared spectroscopy, and N(2) adsorption in the present investigation. The results showed that compared with single HCl or citric acid treatment, steaming treatment, and steaming/HCl treatments, citric acid treatment after steaming exclusively increased the amount of framework Al due to reinsertion of extraframework Al into the defective sites of the steamed HZSM-5 framework. This realumination effect of the citric acid treatment on the steamed HZSM-5 zeolite, which is reported here for the first time to the best of our knowledge, could nearly recover the pore structure of the steamed zeolite to that of the parent HZSM-5 zeolite and appropriately tailor the amount and strength of different acid sites, which sheds light on optimizing the physicochemical properties of HZSM-5 zeolites. It was also found that the steaming treatment prior to the citric acid treatment was the precondition of the realumination of HZSM-5 zeolites, suggesting that the lattice defect sites generated during steaming were necessary for citric acid to work.
