Heterogeneous Structure, Heterogeneous Dynamics, and Complex Behavior in Two-Dimensional Liquids

Heptatic liquid quasi-crystals by colloidal lithographic pre-assembly

HYPOTHESIS

We hypothesize that pre-assembled lithographic Brownian seven-fold quasi-crystals (QCs) of colloidal tiles at high densities can exhibit a heptatic liquid quasi-crystal (LQC) phase upon release; such heptatic LQCs can undergo heterogeneous dynamics at different length scales, reflecting the underlying symmetry, corrugation, and hierarchy of local sets of tiles.

EXPERIMENTS

We design, fabricate, and release a seven-fold QC composed of three differently shaped rhombic tiles using the method of lithographically pre-assembled monolayers (litho-PAMs). High resolution optical microscopy enables spatio-temporal particle tracking of Brownian fluctuations of many tiles in a large area over a long time. We develop an edge-proximity tessellation method for analyzing nearest neighboring particles that can be applied to assemblies and dense systems of complex shapes.

FINDINGS

A fluctuating heptatic LQC phase is identified at high tile area fractions. Heterogenous dynamics and order at different length scales indicate diverse, hierarchical motif structures. We show that certain motifs can collectively rotate without any cage breaking, leading to alterations of the local tile-structure reminiscent of phason-flips in atomic QCs; this rotation causes a slow decline in the system's spatial order. We anticipate that edge-proximity tessellation will help elucidate phase transitions of other systems made of diverse building blocks having significant geometrical complexity at multiple length scales.

Difference in "Supercooling" Affinity between (Acetamide + Na/KSCN) Deep Eutectics: Reflections in the Simulated Anomalous Motions of the Constituents and Solution Microheterogeneity Features

Deep depression of freezing points of ionic amide deep eutectic solvents (DESs) is known to exhibit a significant dependence on the identity of ions present in those systems and the nature of the functional group attached to the host amide. This deep depression of the freezing point is sometimes termed as "supercooling". For (acetamide + electrolyte) DESs, experiments have revealed signatures of ion-dependent spatiotemporal heterogeneity features. The focus of this work is to provide microscopic explanations of these experimentally observed macroscopic system properties in terms of particle jumps and insights about the origin of the cation dependence. For this purpose, extensive molecular dynamics simulations have been performed employing (acetamide + Na/KSCN) deep eutectics as representative ionic systems at 303, 318, 333, and 348 K. The individual translational motions of acetamide and the ions are followed, and their connections to solution heterogeneity are explored. The center-of-mass motion for Na⁺ has been found to be more anomalous than that for K⁺. This difference corroborates well with experimental reports on heterogeneous relaxations in these systems. Simulated viscosity coefficients and dynamic heterogeneity features also reflect this difference. Moreover, simulated reorientational relaxations of acetamide molecules in these ionic DESs suggest that a Na⁺-containing DES is more heterogeneous than the corresponding K⁺-containing system. Estimated void and neck distributions for acetamide molecules differ as the alkali metal ions differ. In brief, this study provides a detailed microscopic view of the cation dependence of the microheterogeneous relaxation dynamics of these DESs reported repeatedly by different experiments.

Characterization of Monte Carlo Dynamic/Kinetic Properties of Local Structure in Bond Fluctuation Model of Polymer System

We report the results of the characterization of local Monte Carlo (MC) dynamics of an equilibrium bond fluctuation model polymer matrix (BFM), in time interval typical for MC simulations of non-linear optical phenomena in host-guest systems. The study contributes to the physical picture of the dynamical aspects of quasi-binary mosaic states characterized previously in the static regime. The polymer dynamics was studied at three temperatures (below, above and close to the glass transition), using time-dependent generalization of the static parameters which characterize local free volume and local mobility of the matrix. Those parameters play the central role in the kinetic MC model of host-guest systems. The analysis was done in terms of the probability distributions of instantaneous and time-averaged local parameters. The main result is the characterization of time scales characteristic of various local structural processes. Slowing down effects close to the glass transition are clearly marked. The approach yields an elegant geometric criterion for the glass transition temperature. A simplified quantitative physical picture of the dynamics of guest molecules dispersed in BFM matrix at low temperatures offers a starting point for stochastic modeling of host-guest systems.

Complex Dynamics of Photo-Switchable Guest Molecules in All-Optical Poling Close to the Glass Transition: Kinetic Monte Carlo Modeling

We study theoretically the kinetics of noninteracting photoswitchable guest molecules (model azo-dye) dispersed at low concentration in host (model polymer matrix) in the all-optical poling process close to the glass transition temperature T_g. We modify kinetic Monte Carlo model used in our previous studies of nonlinear optical processes in host-guest systems. The polymer matrix is simulated using the bond-fluctuation model. The kinetics of multiple trans-cis-trans cycles is formulated in terms of transition probabilities which depend on local free volume in the matrix and its dynamics. Close to T_g, the buildup of polar order, monitored in terms of angular probability density functions, follows a power-law in time while the evolution of the nonlinear susceptibilities related to second harmonic generation effect follows the stretched-exponential law. This complex dynamics of guest molecules implies the presence of dynamic heterogeneities of the matrix in space and time which spread the complexity from the matrix to the otherwise simple dynamics of noninteracting guest molecules. A qualitative physical picture of mosaic-like states-intertwined areas of free- and hindered angular motion of guest molecules-is proposed and the role of related short and longer scales in space for the promotion of complex dynamics of guest molecules is discussed. A brief comparison of the theory to available experimental data is given.

Cage Size and Jump Precursors in Glass-Forming Liquids: Experiment and Simulations

Glassy dynamics is intermittent, as particles suddenly jump out of the cage formed by their neighbors, and heterogeneous, as these jumps are not uniformly distributed across the system. Relating these features of the dynamics to the diverse local environments explored by the particles is essential to rationalize the relaxation process. Here we investigate this issue characterizing the local environment of a particle with the amplitude of its short time vibrational motion, as determined by segmenting in cages and jumps the particle trajectories. Both simulations of supercooled liquids and experiments on colloidal suspensions show that particles in large cages are likely to jump after a small time-lag, and that, on average, the cage enlarges shortly before the particle jumps. At large time-lags, the cage has essentially a constant size, which is smaller for longer-lasting cages. Finally, we clarify how this coupling between cage size and duration controls the average behavior and opens the way to a better understanding of the relaxation process in glass-forming liquids.

Particle dynamics in fluids with random interactions

We study the dynamics of particles in a multi-component 2d Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluid in the limiting case where all the particles are different (APD). The equilibrium properties of this APD system were studied in our earlier work [L. S. Shagolsem et al., J. Chem. Phys. 142, 051104 (2015).]. We use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the statistical properties of particle trajectories in a temperature range covering both the fluid and the solid-fluid coexistence region. We calculate the mean-square displacement as well as displacement, angle, and waiting time distributions, and compare the results with those for one-component LJ fluid. As temperature is lowered, the dynamics of the APD system becomes increasingly complex, as the intrinsic difference between the particles is amplified by neighborhood identity ordering and by the inhomogeneous character of the solid-fluid coexistence region. The ramifications of our results for the analysis of protein tracking experiments in living cells are discussed.

Holographic grating inscription in DR1: DNA-CTMA thin films: the puzzle of time scales

We study experimentally the dynamics of holographic inscription of gratings in DR1:DNA-CTMA thin films using a degenerate two-wave mixing (DTWM) setup in its initial phase (30 ms) and in a longer time interval (30 s). The temporal pattern of evolution of diffraction efficiency is complex, simple fitting procedures fail to reproduce the data. We point out that the complex dynamics can originate a large span of temporal scales, closely related to the microscale inhomogeneity of local free volume. Some of its hallmarks are found through Monte Carlo simulations.

Multistage structural evolution in simple monatomic supercritical fluids: superstable tetrahedral local order

The local order units of dense simple liquid are typically three-dimensional (close packed) clusters: hcp, fcc, and icosahedrons. We show that the fluid demonstrates the superstable tetrahedral local order up to temperatures several orders of magnitude higher than the melting temperature and down to critical density. While the solid-like local order (hcp, fcc) disappears in the fluid at much lower temperatures and far above critical density. We conclude that the supercritical fluid shows the temperature (density)-driven two-stage "melting" of the three-dimensional local order. We also find that the structure relaxation times in the supercritical fluid are much larger than ones estimated for weakly interactive gas even far above the melting line.
