Atomically precise alloy nanoclusters: syntheses, structures, and properties

Metal nanoclusters fill the gap between discrete atoms and plasmonic nanoparticles, providing unique opportunities for investigating the quantum effects and precise structure-property correlations at the atomic level. As a versatile strategy, alloying can largely improve the physicochemical performances compared to the corresponding homo-metal nanoclusters, and thus benefit the applications of such nanomaterials. In this review, we highlight the achievements of atomically precise alloy nanoclusters, and summarize the alloying principles and fundamentals, including the synthetic methods, site-preferences for different heteroatoms in the templates, and alloying-induced structure and property changes. First, based on various Au or Ag nanocluster templates, heteroatom doping modes are presented. The templates with electronic shell-closing configurations tend to maintain their structures during doping, while the others may undergo transformation and give rise to alloy nanoclusters with new structures. Second, alloy nanoclusters of specific magic sizes are reviewed. The arrangement of different atoms is related to the symmetry of the structures; that is, different atoms are symmetrically located in the nanoclusters of smaller sizes, and evolve into shell-by-shell structures at larger sizes. Then, we elaborate on the alloying effects in terms of optical, electrochemical, electroluminescent, magnetic and chiral properties, as well as the stability and reactivity via comparisons between the doped nanoclusters and their homo-metal counterparts. For example, central heteroatom-induced photoluminescence enhancement is emphasized. The applications of alloy nanoclusters in catalysis, chemical sensing, bio-labeling, and other fields are further discussed. Finally, we provide perspectives on existing issues and future efforts. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive synthetic toolbox and controllable doping modes so as to achieve more alloy nanoclusters with customized compositions, structures, and properties for applications. This review is based on publications available up to February 2020.

Doping Copper Atoms into the Nanocluster Kernel: Total Structure Determination of [Cu30Ag61(SAdm)38S3](BPh4)

Doping active metal (i.e., Cu) into the kernel of noble metal nanoclusters (i.e., Au/Ag nanocluster) remains challenging in the synthesis of alloy nanoclusters. Herein, we report the synthesis and the total structure determination of a bimetallic [Ag₆₁Cu₃₀(SAdm)₃₈S₃]BPh₄ (Ag₆₁Cu₃₀) nanocluster. The Ag₆₁Cu₃₀ nanocluster is composed of an Ag₁₃@Cu₃₀ kernel which is further capped by a peripheral Ag₄₈(SAdm)₃₈S₃ shell. The icosidodecahedron Cu₃₀ middle layer connects the innermost icosahedral Ag₁₃ core and Ag atoms at the outermost Ag₄₈(SR)₃₈S₃ shell, demonstrating that the Cu atoms in the Cu₃₀ layer are in a metallic state.

Surface Chemistry-Mediated Near-Infrared Emission of Small Coinage Metal Nanoparticles

From size-dependent luminescence to localized surface plasmon resonances, the optical properties that emerge from common materials with nanoscale dimensions have been revolutionary. As nanomaterials get smaller, they approach molecular electronic structures, and this transition from bulk to molecular electronic properties is a subject of far-reaching impact. One class of nanomaterials that exhibit particularly interesting optoelectronic features at this size transition are coinage metal (i.e., group 11 elements copper, silver, and gold) nanoparticles with core diameters between approximately 1 to 3 nm (∼25-200 atoms). Coinage metal nanoparticles can exhibit red or near-infrared photoluminescence features that are not seen in either their molecular or larger nanoscale counterparts. This emission has been exploited both as a probe of electronic behavior at the nanoscale as well as in critical applications such as biological imaging and chemical sensing. Interestingly, it has been demonstrated that their photoluminescence figures of merit such as emission quantum yield, energy, and lifetime are largely independent of particle diameter. Instead, emission from particles at this size range depends heavily on the particle surface chemistry, which includes both its metallic composition and the capping ligand architecture. The strong influence of surface chemistry on these emergent optoelectronic phenomena has powerful implications for both the study and use of these particles, primarily due to the theoretically limitless possible surface ligand architectures and metallic compositions. In this Account, we highlight recent work that studies and uses surface chemistry-mediated photoluminescence from coinage metal nanoparticles. Specifically, we emphasize the distinct, as well as synergistic, roles of the nanoparticle capping ligand and the nanoparticle core for controlling and/or enhancing their near-infrared photoluminescence. We then discuss the implications of surface chemistry-mediated photoluminescence as it relates to downstream applications such as energy transfer, sensing, and biological imaging. We conclude by discussing current challenges that remain in the field, including opportunities to develop new particle synthetic routes, analytical tools, and physical frameworks with which to understand small nanoparticle emission. Taken together, we anticipate that these materials will be foundational both in understanding the unique transition from molecular to bulk electronic structures and in the development of nanomaterials that leverage this transition.

Connections Between Theory and Experiment for Gold and Silver Nanoclusters

Ligand-stabilized gold and silver nanoparticles are of tremendous current interest in sensing, catalysis, and energy applications. Experimental and theoretical studies have closely interacted to elucidate properties such as the geometric and electronic structures of these fascinating systems. In this review, the interplay between theory and experiment is described; areas such as optical absorption and doping, where the theory-experiment connections are well established, are discussed in detail; and the current status of these connections in newer fields of study, such as luminescence, transient absorption, and the effects of solvent and the surrounding environment, are highlighted. Close communication between theory and experiment has been extremely valuable for developing an understanding of these nanocluster systems in the past decade and will undoubtedly continue to play a major role in future years.

Effects of oxidation on the plasmonic properties of aluminum nanoclusters

The scouting of alternative plasmonic materials able to enhance and extend the optical properties of noble metal nanostructures is on the rise. Aluminum is endowed with a set of interesting properties which turn it into an attractive plasmonic material. Here we present the optical and electronic features of different aluminum nanostructures stemming from a multilevel computational study. Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations using a reactive force field (ReaxFF), carefully validated with Density Functional Theory (DFT), were employed to mimic the oxidation of icosahedral aluminum nanoclusters. Resulting structures with different oxidation degrees were then studied through the Time-Dependent Density Functional Tight Binding (TD-DFTB) method. A similar approach was used in aluminum nanoclusters with a disordered structure to study how the loss of crystallinity affects the optical properties. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report that addresses this issue from the fully atomistic time-dependent approach by means of two different and powerful simulation tools able to describe quantum and physicochemical properties associated with nanostructured particles.

Polylysine-grafted Au144 nanoclusters: birth and growth of a healthy surface-plasmon-resonance-like band

Poly(amino acid)-coated gold nanoparticles hold promise in biomedical applications, particularly because they combine the unique physicochemical properties of the gold core, excellent biocompatibility, and easy functionalization of the poly(amino acid)-capping shell. Here we report a novel method for the preparation of robust hybrid core-shell nanosystems consisting of a Au144 cluster and a densely grafted polylysine layer. Linear polylysine chains were grown by direct N-carboxyanhydride (NCA) polymerization onto ligands capping the gold nanocluster. The density of the polylysine chains and the thickness of the polymer layer strongly depend on the amount and concentration of the NCA monomer and the initiator. The optical spectra of the so-obtained core-shell nanosystems show a strong surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-like band at 531 nm. In fact, despite maintenance of the gold cluster size and the absence of interparticle aggregation, the polylysine-capped clusters behave as if they have a diameter nearly 4 times larger. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation of the growth of a fully developed, very stable SPR-like band for a gold nanocluster of such dimensions. The robust polylysine protective shell makes the nanoparticles very stable under conditions of chemical etching, in the presence of glutathione, and at different pH values, without gold core deshielding or alteration of the SPR-like band. This polymerization method can conceivably be extended to prepare core-shell nanosystems based on other mono- or co-poly(amino acids).

Exploring the atomic structure of 1.8nm monolayer-protected gold clusters with aberration-corrected STEM

Monolayer-protected (MP) Au clusters present attractive quantum systems with a range of potential applications e.g. in catalysis. Knowledge of the atomic structure is needed to obtain a full understanding of their intriguing physical and chemical properties. Here we employed aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (ac-STEM), combined with multislice simulations, to make a round-robin investigation of the atomic structure of chemically synthesised clusters with nominal composition Au₁₄₄(SCH₂CH₂Ph)₆₀ provided by two different research groups. The MP Au clusters were "weighed" by the atom counting method, based on their integrated intensities in the high angle annular dark field (HAADF) regime and calibrated exponent of the Z dependence. For atomic structure analysis, we compared experimental images of hundreds of clusters, with atomic resolution, against a variety of structural models. Across the size range 123-151 atoms, only 3% of clusters matched the theoretically predicted Au₁₄₄(SR)₆₀ structure, while a large proportion of the clusters were amorphous (i.e. did not match any model structure). However, a distinct ring-dot feature, characteristic of local icosahedral symmetry, was observed in about 20% of the clusters.

Repeated appearance and disappearance of localized surface plasmon resonance in 1.2 nm gold clusters induced by adsorption and desorption of hydrogen atoms

Addition of an aqueous solution of NaBH4 to a dispersion of small (∼1.2 nm) gold clusters stabilized by poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (Au:PVP) induced a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption for a certain period of time while maintaining the cluster size. The duration of the LSPR band could be lengthened by increasing the NaBH4 concentration and shortened by increasing the concentration of dissolved O2, and the LSPR band could be made to appear and reappear repeatedly. The appearance of the LSPR band is explained by the electron donation to the Au core from the adsorbed H atoms that originate from NaBH4, whereas its disappearance is ascribed to the removal of H atoms by their reaction with O2. These results suggest that the transition between the metallic and non-metallic electronic structures of the Au clusters can be reversibly induced by the adsorption and desorption of H atoms, which are electronically equivalent to Au.

Description and Role of Bimetallic Prenucleation Species in the Formation of Small Nanoparticle Alloys

We report the identification, description, and role of multinuclear metal-thiolate complexes in aqueous Au-Cu nanoparticle syntheses. The structure of these species was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques. The observed structures were found to be in good agreement with thermodynamic growth trends predicted by first-principles calculations. The presence of metal-thiolate complexes is then shown to be critical for the formation of alloyed Au-Cu architectures in the small nanoparticle regime (diameter ∼2 nm). In the absence of mixed metal-thiolate precursors, nanoparticles form with a Cu-S shell and a Au-rich interior. Taken together, these results demonstrate that prenucleation species, which are discrete molecular precursors distinct from both initial reagents and final particle products, may provide an important new synthetic route to control final metal nanoparticle composition and composition architectures.
