Critical brush density for the transition between carpet-only and carpet/brush double-layered structures

Nanostructure and salt effect of zwitterionic carboxybetaine brush at the air/water interface

Zwitterionic amphiphilic diblock copolymer, poly(ethylhexyl acrylate)-b-poly(carboxybetaine) (PEHA-b-PGLBT), was synthesized by the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) method with precise control of block length and polydispersity. The polymers thus obtained were spread onto the water surface to form a polymer monolayer. The fundamental property and nanostructure of the block copolymer monolayer were systematically studied by the surface pressure-molecular area (π-A) isotherm, Brewster angle microscopy (BAM), and X-ray reflectivity (XR) techniques. The π values of the monolayer increased by compression in relatively larger A regions. After showing a large plateau region by compression, the π value sharply increased at very small A regions, suggesting the formation of poly(GLBT) brush formation just beneath the water surface. The domain structure of μm size was observed by BAM in the plateau region. XR profiles for the monolayer at higher surface pressure regions clearly showed the PGLBT brush formation in addition to PGLBT carpet layer formation under the hydrophobic PEHA layer on the water surface, as was observed for both anionic and cationic brush layer in the water surface monolayer studied previously. The critical brush density, where the PGLBT brush is formed, was estimated to be about 0.30 chains/nm(2) for the (EHA)45-b-(GLBT)60 monolayer, which is relatively large compared to other ionic brushes. This observation is consistent with the fact that the origin of brush formation is mainly steric hindrance between brush chains. The brush thickness increased by compression and also by salt addition, unlike the normal ionic brush (anionic and cationic), whose thickness tended to decrease, i.e., shrink, by salt addition. This might be a character unique to the zwitterionic brush, and its origin is thought to be transition to an ionic nature from the almost nonionic inner salt caused by salt addition since both the cation and anion of the GLBT chain obtained counterions by the addition of salt. This stretching nature of the PGLBT brush depends on the ion species of the salt added, and it followed the Hofmeister series, i.e., more stretching in the order of Li(+) > Na(+) > K(+). However, it was rather insensitive to the anion species (Cl(-), Br(-), SCN(-)), which suggests that the carboxylic anion has a more dominant effect than the quaternized cation in GLBT although the former is a weak acid and the latter is believed to be a strong base.

On the origins of the salt-concentration-dependent instability and lateral nanoscale heterogeneities of weak polyelectrolyte brushes: gradient brush experiment and Flory-type theoretical analysis

We investigated, by experiment and theory, the lateral structure of a weak polyelectrolyte brush at various added salt concentrations and chain grafting densities. Model poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) brushes with grafting density gradients were developed for this study by using a novel "Langmuir-Blodgett-deposition-under-compression" (LB\C) method. Fluid AFM images of these brushes indicate that the lateral structure of the brush system is sensitive to both added salt concentration and grafting density. Under low salt conditions, 0-20 mM NaCl, the brush structure shows strong microscopic lateral heterogeneities at high grafting densities; both the width and height of the heterogeneities increase with increasing grafting density but are independent of the salt concentration. As the bulk salt concentration is increased to an intermediate regime, 60-100 mM NaCl, these heterogeneities become smaller in size and number, coexisting with smooth homogeneous regions. At high enough concentrations, 300-500 mM NaCl, the entire surface becomes homogeneous. A simple free energy-based Flory-type argument is presented which explains the essential features of the thermodynamic behavior of the brush system. In the zero-salt limit, relatively few monomers are charged, and the hydrophobicity of the backbone chain drives the collapse/aggregation of the chains. At high salt concentrations, the brush chains become sufficiently charged to overcome the hydrophobic nature of the monomers and stabilize the homogeneous state. However, at intermediate salt concentrations, it is found that the osmotic pressure of the counterions surrounding the charged polymer moieties can be decreased by collapsing the chain structure while simultaneously decreasing the number of charges along the backbone and releasing small ions into the bulk solution. This effect, which we term "osmotic instability", serves to destabilize the homogeneous brush configuration.

Phase transition of alkylsilane monolayers studied by temperature-dependent grazing incidence X-ray diffraction

The phase transition of organosilane monolayers on Si-wafer substrate surfaces prepared from octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) or docosyltrichlorosilane (DOTS) was investigated on the basis of grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) at various temperatures. The OTS monolayer was prepared by a chemisorption method. The DOTS monolayer was prepared by a water-cast method (DOTS). The GIXD measurement clarified that the OTS monolayer also changed from hexagonal phase to amorphous state above a melting point of otadecyl groups. The GIXD measurements also clarified that the molecular aggregation state of the DOTS monolayer changes from an anisotropic phase to an isotropic phase with an increase in temperature. An estimated linear thermal expansion coefficient of the lattice lengths of a and b of the DOTS monolayer in the rectangular crystalline state assigned a similar value to those of bulk polyethylene with an orthorhombic crystalline lattice. The setting angle of the ab plane of the rectangular DOTS monolayer also showed similar behavior to that of the ab plane of bulk polyethylene.
