Abstract
Single molecule spectroscopic methods are now being widely employed to probe the nanometer scale properties of sol-gel-derived silica materials. This article reviews a subset of the recent literature in this area and provides salient examples of the new information that can be obtained. The materials covered include inorganic and organically-modified silica, along with surfactant-templated mesoporous materials. Studies of molecule-matrix interactions based on ionic, hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions are reviewed, highlighting the impacts of these interactions on mass transport phenomena. Quantitative investigations of molecular diffusion by single molecule tracking and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy are also covered, focusing on the characterization of anisotropic and hindered diffusion in mesoporous systems. Single molecule polarity studies are described and the new information that can be obtained from the resulting inhomogeneous distributions is discussed. Likewise, single molecule studies of silica acidity properties are reviewed, including observation of nanoscale buffering phenomena due to the chemistry of surface silanols. Finally, related single nanoparticle studies of macroporous silicas are also discussed.

Synthesis and applications of functionalized silsesquioxane polymers attached to organic and inorganic matrices. PURE APPL CHEM 2008. Abstract
Organofunctionalized silsesquioxane polymers obtained in a water-soluble form can be used to coat various substrates such as SiO2, SiO2/Al2O3, Al2O3, cellulose/Al2O3, and graphite or, when obtained in a water-insoluble form, can be used directly. These organofunctionalized silsesquioxanes can also be attached to poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) polymers. The functional groups constituted by neutral amine groups or cationic groups (pyridinium, 3- and 4-picolinium, or 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO), mono- or -dicationic) have relatively high affinity for metal ion in ethanol solutions, as shown by their stability constants. Materials containing attached cationic functional groups have also been efficiently used to immobilize various electroactive species and to construct electrochemical sensors for analytical applications. This work discusses the preparation of silsesquioxane derivatives, their characterization as prepared and when dispersed on several substrates, and comments on some applications of these materials, with an emphasis on the metal adsorption process and manufacture of electrochemical sensors.

Use of organofunctionalized nanoporous silica gel to improve the lifetime of carbon paste electrode for determination of copper(II) ions. Anal Chim Acta 2007; 601:172-82. Abstract
A new functionalized nanoporous silica gel with dipyridyl group (DPNSG) was synthesized. Then, the potentiometric response of the copper(II) ion was investigated at a carbon paste electrode chemically modified with this newly designed functionalized nanoporous silica gel. The electrodes with DPNSG proportions of 15.0% (w/w) demonstrated very stable potentials. Calibration plots with Nernstian slopes for Cu2+ were observed, 28.4 (+/-1.0) mV decade(-1), over a wide linear concentration range (1.0x10(-7) to 1.0x10(-2) M). The electrode exhibited a detection limit of 8.0x10(-8) M. Moreover, the selectivity coefficients measured by the match potential method in acetate buffer, pH 5.5, were investigated. The electrode presented a response time of approximately 50s, high performance, high sensitivity in a wide range of cation activities and good long-term stability (more than 9 months). The method was satisfactory and was used to determine the copper ion concentration in waste waters, contaminated by this metal.

Abstract
Twenty years after their invention, sol-gel organically modified silicates (ORMOSIL) are finding a number of impressive applications that range from efficient deliver of genes into mouse brains to self-ordered helices of interest to fields as diverse as optics, catalysis, molecular recognition, and chromatography. The physical bases of this mulifaceted chemistry, therefore, are of immense importance to scientists working toward new applications such as photovoltaics and catalysis that are crucially important in making sustainable global development. The purpose of this article is to provide a general picture of ORMOSIL's physical chemistry that will be useful in the creative development of new materials capable to solve a number of relevant open problems.

Abstract
Porous silica spheres functionalized with quaternary ammonium groups have been prepared by co-condensation of N-((trimethoxysilyl)propyl)-N,N,N-trimethylammonium chloride (TMTMAC) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium as a template and ammonia as a catalyst. The physicochemical characteristics of the resulting ion exchangers have been analyzed by various techniques and discussed with respect to the amount of organofunctional groups in the materials. For comparison purposes, both an ordered MCM-41 type mesoporous silica and two silica gels of different pore size have been grafted with TMTMAC. The ion-exchange capabilities were first evaluated from batch experiments (determination of anion-exchange capacities) and then by ion-exchange voltammetry at carbon paste electrodes modified with these hybrid materials. Effective concentration of Fe(CN)(6)(3)(-) species in the anion exchangers was pointed out, while no significant accumulation of Ru(NH(3))(6)(3+) was observed. The preconcentration efficiency was discussed on the basis of the organic group content in the materials as well as their structure and porosity. A second series of materials displaying zwitterionic surfaces was finally prepared and characterized with respect to their physicochemical properties and ion-exchange voltammetric behavior. They consisted of sulfonic acid-functionalized mesoporous silica samples resulting from the oxidation of thiol-functionalized silica spheres obtained by co-condensation of mercaptopropyl-trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) and TEOS, which were then grafted with TMTMAC at various functionalization levels. Possible interactions between the ammonium and sulfonate moieties in the confined medium were pointed out from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The competitive accumulation-rejection of Fe(CN)(6)(3)(-) and Ru(NH(3))(6)(3+) redox probes was finally studied by cyclic voltammetry.

Abstract
The application of single-molecule spectroscopic methods in studies of individual nanoscale environments within sol-gel-derived silicate thin films is reviewed. Representative examples of the experiments performed and results obtained in several studies from the authors' laboratories are given. Included are investigations of the static and dynamic polarity properties of organically modified silicate (ORMOSIL) films. The results of these studies point to nonrandom variations in the film properties, providing strong evidence for the formation of phase-separated organic- and inorganic-rich domains. Studies of single-molecule diffusion through the same films yield important evidence for the formation of liquidlike silicate oligomers that facilitate probe molecule diffusion. Finally, single-molecule studies of the local pH within individual film environments are discussed. Valuable information on the contributions of local materials' acidity variations to overall sample heterogeneity is obtained. The results of immersion studies indicate that certain molecular environments are inaccessible to external solutions over periods as long as a few hours. The article concludes with a discussion of possible future challenges in this research that may be addressed by new and existing single-molecule methods.
