Design colloidal particle morphology and self-assembly for coating applications

Recent progress in developing new generation coating materials through colloidal design and self-assembly is reviewed. Novel concepts originated from academia and technology commercialized in industry are both summarized.

Friction coefficient dependence on electrostatic tribocharging

Friction between dielectric surfaces produces patterns of fixed, stable electric charges that in turn contribute electrostatic components to surface interactions between the contacting solids. The literature presents a wealth of information on the electronic contributions to friction in metals and semiconductors but the effect of triboelectricity on friction coefficients of dielectrics is as yet poorly defined and understood. In this work, friction coefficients were measured on tribocharged polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), using three different techniques. As a result, friction coefficients at the macro- and nanoscales increase many-fold when PTFE surfaces are tribocharged, but this effect is eliminated by silanization of glass spheres rolling on PTFE. In conclusion, tribocharging may supersede all other contributions to macro- and nanoscale friction coefficients in PTFE and probably in other insulating polymers.

Triboelectricity in insulating polymers: evidence for a mechanochemical mechanism

Transfer of reaction products formed on the surfaces of two mutually rubbed dielectric solids makes an important if not dominating contribution to triboelectricity. New evidence in support of this statement is presented in this report, based on analytical electron microscopy coupled to electrostatic potential mapping techniques. Mechanical action on contacting surface asperities transforms them into hot-spots for free-radical formation, followed by electron transfer producing cationic and anionic polymer fragments, according to their electronegativity. Polymer ions accumulate creating domains with excess charge because they are formed at fracture surfaces of pulled-out asperities. Another factor for charge segregation is the low polymer mixing entropy, following Flory and Huggins. The formation of fractal charge patterns that was previously described is thus the result of polymer fragment fractal scatter on both contacting surfaces. The present results contribute to the explanation of the centuries-old difficulties for understanding the “triboelectric series” and triboelectricity in general, as well as the dissipative nature of friction, and they may lead to better control of friction and its consequences.

Friction, tribochemistry and triboelectricity: recent progress and perspectives

Mechanochemical reactions during polymer friction or contact produce ionic fragments distributed on positive and negative domains at both surfaces.

Electrostatic contributions in the increased compatibility of polymer blends

Successful blending of different polymers to make a structural or functional material requires overcoming limitations due to immiscibility and/or incompatibility that arise from large polymer-polymer interfacial tensions. In the case of latex blends, the combination of capillary adhesion during the blended dispersion drying stage with electrostatic adhesion in the final product is an effective strategy to avoid these limitations, which has been extended to a number of polymer blends and composites. This work shows that adhesion of polymer domains in blends made with natural rubber and synthetic latexes is enhanced by electrostatic adhesion that is in turn enhanced by ion migration, according to the results from scanning electric potential microscopy. The additional attractive force between domains improves blend stability and mechanical properties, broadening the possibilities and scope of latex blends, in consonance with the "green chemistry" paradigm. This novel approach based on electrostatic adhesion can be easily extended to multicomponent systems, including nonpolymers.

Detection of charge distributions in insulator surfaces

Charge distribution in insulators has received considerable attention but still poses great scientific challenges, largely due to a current lack of firm knowledge about the nature and speciation of charges. Recent studies using analytical microscopies have shown that insulators contain domains with excess fixed ions forming various kinds of potential distribution patterns, which are also imaged by potential mapping using scanning electric probe microscopy. Results from the authors' laboratory show that solid insulators are seldom electroneutral, as opposed to a widespread current assumption. Excess charges can derive from a host of charging mechanisms: excess local ion concentration, radiochemical and tribochemical reactions added to the partition of hydroxonium and hydronium ions derived from atmospheric water. The last factor has been largely overlooked in the literature, but recent experimental evidence suggests that it plays a decisive role in insulator charging. Progress along this line is expected to help solve problems related to unwanted electrostatic discharges, while creating new possibilities for energy storage and handling as well as new electrostatic devices.

Cationic latex formation by ionic modification

Stable cationic latices were prepared by charge inversion of anionic styrene-acrylic copolymer latices upon binding Al3+ and Fe3+ ions. This is achieved by stabilizing the latices with a high-HLB (hydrophile-lypophile balance) nonionic surfactant that imparts strong steric stability to the latex, even in the presence of high concentrations of multivalent counterions while these are bound to the latex anionic sites. The cationic latices thus prepared have good stability properties, and the same procedure should be applicable to essentially any latex-carrying anionic sites. Analytical ESI-TEM images show that particle-bound iron is concentrated at the particle borders, but it is also found in the particle bulk.
