Formation of spatially patterned colloidal photonic crystals through the control of capillary forces and template recognition

Multicolor Photonic Pigments for Rotation-Asymmetric Mechanochromic Devices

Photonic crystals are extensively explored to replace inorganic pigments and organic dyes as coloring elements in printing, painting, sensing, and anti-counterfeiting due to their brilliant structural colors, chemical stability, and environmental friendliness. However, most existing photonic-crystal-based pigments can only display monochromatic colors once made, and generating multicolors has to start with designing different building blocks. Here, a novel photonic pigment featuring highly tunable structural colors in the entire visible spectrum, made by the magnetic assembly of monodisperse nanorods into body-centered-tetragonal photonic crystals, is reported. Their prominent magnetic and crystal anisotropy makes it efficient to generate multicolors using one photonic pigment by magnetically controlling the crystal orientation. Further, the combination of angle-dependent diffraction and magnetic orientation control enables the design of rotation-asymmetric photonic films that display distinct patterns and encrypted information in response to rotation. The efficient multicolor generation through precise orientational control makes this novel photonic pigment promising in developing high-performance structural-colored materials and optical devices.

Clairvoyant Melon Maturity Detection Enabled by Doctor-Blade-Coated Photonic Crystals

Climacteric fruits are harvested before they are ripened to avoid adverse damages during transport. The unripe fruits can undergo ripening processes associated with rind color changes on exposure to ethanol vapors. Although rind coloration is a common indicator showing fruit maturity, the attribute does not provide reliable assessment of maturity especially for melons. Herein, we report the achievement of sensitive and reversible melon maturity detection using macroporous hydrogel photonic crystals self-assembled by a roll-to-roll compatible doctor-blade-coating technology. The consumption of applied ethanol vapor during melon ripening results in less condensation of ethanol vapor in the pores (250 nm in diameter), leading to a distinct blue-shift of the optical stop band from 572 to 501 nm and an obvious visual colorimetric readout from yellow green to blue. Moreover, the dependence of the color change on Brix value within the melon has also been evaluated in the study.

Designing Structural-Color Patterns Composed of Colloidal Arrays

Structural coloration provides a great potential for various applications due to unique optical properties distinguished from conventional pigment colors. Structural colors are nonfading, iridescent, and tunable, which is difficult to achieve with pigments. In addition, structural color is potentially less toxic than pigments. However, it is challenging to develop structural colors because elaborate nanostructures are a prerequisite for the coloration. Furthermore, it is highly suggested the nanostructures be patterned at various length scales on a large area to provide practical formats. There have been intensive studies to develop pragmatic methods for producing structural-color patterns in a controlled manner using either colloidal crystals or glasses. This article reviews the current state of the art in the structural-color patterning based on the colloidal arrays. We first discuss common and different features between colloidal crystals and glasses. We then categorize colloidal arrays into six distinct structures of 3D opals, inverse opals, non-close-packed arrays, 2D colloidal crystals, 1D colloidal strings, and 3D amorphous arrays and study various methods to make them patterned from recent key contributions. Finally, we outline the current challenges and future perspectives of the structural-color patterns.

Ultra-fast responsive colloidal-polymer composite-based volatile organic compounds (VOC) sensor using nanoscale easy tear process

There is an immense need for developing a simple, rapid, and inexpensive detection assay for health-care applications or monitoring environments. To address this need, a photonic crystal (PC)-based sensor has been extensively studied due to its numerous advantages such as colorimetric measurement, high sensitivity, and low cost. However, the response time of a typical PC-based sensor is relatively slow due to the presence of the inevitable upper residual layer in colloidal structures. Hence, we propose an ultra-fast responsive PC-based volatile organic compound (VOC) sensor by using a “nanoscale easy tear (NET) process” inspired by commercially available “easy tear package”. A colloidal crystal-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite can be successfully realized through nanoscale tear propagation along the interface between the outer surface of crystallized nanoparticles and bulk PDMS. The response time for VOC detection exhibits a significant decrease by allowing the direct contact with VOCs, because of perfect removal of the residual on the colloidal crystals. Moreover, vapor-phase VOCs can be monitored, which had been previously impossible. High-throughput production of the patterned colloidal crystal–polymer composite through the NET process can be applied to other multiplexed selective sensing applications or may be used for nanomolding templates.

Stamping colloidal photonic crystals: a facile way towards complex pixel colour patterns for sensing and displays

Patterning of colloidal photonic crystals (CPCs) has been strongly investigated in recent years for sensing and image displays. Rather than using traditional template-directed approaches, here microimprint lithography along with convective self-assembly is applied to generate complex CPC patterns that can be adjusted to show single- or dual-colour patterns or composite CPC patterns possessing two different colours. These composite CPC patterns show different wettability with water because of the surface chemistry of the polymers and silica used. This dramatically transforms the structural colours upon liquid infiltration. By mixing different ethanol concentrations with water, the infiltration efficiency can be further improved and easily read out from changes in reflection intensity and spectral peak shifts. Integrating these nano-architectures into devices can thus yield function as image displays and as sensors for solvents.

Selectively Patterning Polymer Opal Films via Microimprint Lithography

Large-scale structural color flexible coatings have been hard to create, and patterning color on them is key to many applications, including large-area strain sensors, wall-size displays, security devices, and smart fabrics. To achieve controlled tuning, a micro-imprinting technique is applied here to pattern both the surface morphology and the structural color of the polymer opal films (POFs). These POFs are made of 3D ordered arrays of hard spherical particles embedded inside soft shells. The soft outer shells cause the POFs to deform upon imprinting with a pre-patterned stamp, driving a flow of the soft polymer and a rearrangement of the hard spheres within the films. As a result, a patterned surface morphology is generated within the POFs and the structural colors are selectively modified within different regions. These changes are dependent on the pressure, temperature, and duration of imprinting, as well as the feature sizes in the stamps. Moreover, the pattern geometry and structural colors can then be further tuned by stretching. Micropattern color generation upon imprinting depends on control of colloidal transport in a polymer matrix under shear flow and brings many potential properties including stretchability and tunability, as well as being of fundamental interest.

Patterning organic/inorganic hybrid Bragg stacks by integrating one-dimensional photonic crystals and macrocavities through photolithography: toward tunable colorful patterns as highly selective sensors

Herein, we report a simple method to fabricate patterned organic/inorganic hybrid 1DPCs by top-down assisted photolithography. Versatile colorful pattern with different size and shape can be produced by selectively exposing the 1DPCs under UV light with predesigned photomask directly. The period change, especially the thickness variation of the top polymer layer, is the main reason for the colorful pattern generation. Because of the swelling property of the polymer layers, the pattern color can be modulated by introducing or taking off organic solvents, leading the as-prepared patterned 1DPCs to be effective sensors with high selectivity.

Manipulation of cracks in three-dimensional colloidal crystal films via recognition of surface energy patterns: an approach to regulating crack patterns and shaping microcrystals

A new concept for dealing with cracks in colloidal crystals has been proposed. We induce the cracks rather than eliminate them via templates that possess hydrophilic/hydrophobic patterns on the surface (surface energy patterns), leading the cracks to propagate along the predetermined lines. Colloidal crystal arrays with various kinds of element figures separated by cracks could be reproducibly fabricated. Diverse crack patterns other than common stripes have been observed, and the mechanism of these behaviors has been explored. The factors that influence the crack density have been investigated to ensure that the templates could function effectively. Moreover, we obtained microcrystal blocks with specific shapes, detached from the substrate.

Templating membrane assembly, structure, and dynamics using engineered interfaces

The physical and chemical properties of biological membranes are intimately linked to their bounding aqueous interfaces. Supported phospholipid bilayers, obtained by surface-assisted rupture, fusion, and spreading of vesicular microphases, offer a unique opportunity, because engineering the substrate allows manipulation of one of the two bilayer interfaces as well. Here, we review a collection of recent efforts, which illustrates deliberate substrate-membrane coupling using structured surfaces exhibiting chemical and topographic patterns. Vesicle fusion on chemically patterned substrates results in co-existing lipid phases, which reflect the underlying pattern of surface energy and wettability. These co-existing bilayer/monolayer morphologies are useful both for fundamental biophysical studies (e.g., studies of membrane asymmetry) as well as for applied work, such as synthesizing large-scale arrays of bilayers or living cells. The use of patterned, static surfaces provides new models to design complex membrane topographies and curvatures. Dynamic switchable-topography surfaces and sacrificial trehalose based-substrates reveal abilities to dynamically introduce membrane curvature and change the nature of the membrane-substrate interface. Taken together, these studies illustrate the importance of controlling interfaces in devising model membrane platforms for fundamental biophysical studies and bioanalytical devices.

Manipulating spheres that sink: assembly of micrometer sized glass spheres for optical coupling

Previous work (Tull, E. J.; Bartlett, P. N.; Ryan, K. R. Langmuir 2007, 14, 7859; Tull, E. J.; Bartlett, P. N. Colloids Surf., A 2008, 327, 71) has demonstrated that, since convective forces have little influence over spheres in unstable sols, many conventional assembly techniques are ineffective for the organization of glassy spheres > or =5 microm in diameter into sparse patterns of interest for optoelectronic device applications. Carefully designed bifunctional substrates are required for both planar and "in cavity" assembly. In the present work, novel selective chemical modification of structured Ta2O5/glass substrates has been used to generate surfaces tailored to the assembly of glass microspheres from aqueous solution. Uniform arrays of 40-60 microm diameter glass spheres have been produced in pits of half-diameter depth, demonstrating the suitability of this technique for fabricating optical devices where light is coupled from a waveguide into the equator of a sphere. Individual aspects of the assembly process have been examined, and their influence over defect densities and the positioning of the assembled spheres is discussed.

Controlled assembly of micrometer-sized spheres: theory and application

Site-selective assembly of 5 microm amine-functionalized glass spheres from aqueous suspensions onto gold surfaces patterned with carboxylic acid and methyl-terminated thiols has been achieved through the introduction of a variable tilt flow cell. In situ microscope imaging has been employed to study the four phases of assembly independently, and the relative roles of electrostatic attraction and capillary emersion have been explored. In contradiction to the commonly recognized electrostatic assembly model, detailed theoretical analysis and experimental evidence are presented to support a mechanism where patterning occurs at the point of meniscus contact. Control of pattern quality is demonstrated through the comparison of results obtained from a variety of experiments, and the best conditions for the assembly of monolayer features are identified. Finally, evidence for the extension of this assembly method to the production of singlet sphere arrays is discussed.

Micrometer-sized particles in a two-dimensional self-assembly during drying of liquid film

We computed the self-organization process of a monodisperse collection of spherical micrometer-sized particles trapped in a two-dimensional thin liquid film isothermally dried on a chemically inert substrate. The substrate is either flat or indented to create linear stripes on its surface. The numerical results are illustrated and discussed in the light of experimental ones obtained from the drying of a water-based suspension of diamond particles (d{50}=10 microm) on a glass substrate. The drying of the suspension on a flat substrate leads to the formation of linear patterns and small clusters of micrometer-sized particles distributed over the whole surface of the substrate, whereas the drying of the suspension on an indented substrate leads to the aggregation of the particles along one side of the stripe which has a higher roughness than the other side of the stripe. This is an easy experimental way to obtain colloidal self-organized patterns.
