Probing Anisotropic Surface Properties of Illite by Atomic Force Microscopy

For the purpose of understanding the colloidal behaviors of illite in mineral processing, probing the surface charging property of illite is of great significance. This research explored the edge and basal surfaces of illite using an atomic force microscope (AFM). The interaction forces between Si/Si₃N₄ probes and illite edge/basal surfaces were measured, respectively, at different pH values in 10 mM KCl solutions. Theoretical Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek forces were matched up with the measured forces to derive the surface potentials of the two surfaces. On the illite basal surface, an attractive force occurred at pH 3.0, while repulsive forces dominated from pH 5.0 to 10.0. On the illite edge surface, a slight attractive force was also obtained at pH 3.0. However, the interaction changed into repulsion at pH 5.0, and this repulsive force increased gradually from pH 6.0 to 10.0. Illite basal and edge surfaces were both negatively charged, but the basal surface exhibited more negative charges than the edge surface from pH 3.0 to 10.0. Increasing solution pH from 3.0 to 10.0, there was no detection of the point of zero charge (PZC) of the illite basal surface; however, the PZC of the illite edge surface should have occurred at a pH slightly lower than 3.0. This is the first time that surface potentials of illite edge and basal surfaces were attained separately by direct force measurements. These findings provide insights into the colloidal behaviors of illite in mineral processing and oil sands extraction.

Determination of anisotropic surface characteristics of different phyllosilicates by direct force measurements

To fundamentally understand the electrokinetic behavior of clay minerals, it is necessary to study the anisotropic surface charge properties of clay surfaces. In this study, two 2:1 layer natural minerals, talc and muscovite, were chosen as representatives of magnesium and aluminum phyllosilicate minerals, respectively. The molecularly smooth basal planes of both platy minerals were obtained by cleavage along the basal planes, while suitable edge surfaces were prepared by an ultramicrotome cutting technique. Silicon nitride atomic force microscopy tip was used as a probe to study the interaction forces between the tip and clay basal/edge surfaces in aqueous solutions of various pH values. The measured interaction force profiles between the tip and clay basal/edge surfaces were fitted with the classical DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek) theory, which allows direct determination of electrical surface potential of talc and muscovite surfaces. The surface potential of muscovite basal planes was found to be significantly more negative than the basal plane of talc, both being pH insensitive. In contrast, the surface potential of edge surfaces was highly pH-dependent, exhibiting a point of zero charge (PZC) at pH 7.5 and 8.1 for edges of muscovite and talc, respectively. The observed differences in surface potential of basal planes and edge surfaces for both talc and muscovite are closely related to their crystal structure and ionization characteristics. The protonation reactivity and the contribution of each surface group to the surface charging behavior are modeled using their protonation constants.

Influence of surface topography on adhesive and long-range capillary forces between hydrophobic surfaces in water

We report on the interactions between a hydrophobic probe particle and surfaces with nanoscopic surface features. These surfaces have been prepared by spin-coating of nanoparticles and by polishing. The surface topography was characterized by AFM, using the methods of high-resolution imaging, low-resolution imaging using the probe particle, and by the rolling ball method. The spin-coated surfaces can be characterized as nanostructured due to the high density of nanoparticles that on a short length scale provides a regular pattern of crevices and hills. On these surfaces a larger waviness is also distinguished. In contrast, the polished surfaces display sharp nanoscopic peaks and hardly any crevices. In all cases the dominant force at short separations was found to be a capillary attraction due to the formation of an air/vapor condensate. Our data show that the large-scale waviness of the surface does not significantly influence the range and magnitude of the capillary attraction, but large local variations in these quantities are found. The large variation in adhesion force corresponds to a small variation in local contact angle of the capillary condensate at the surfaces. The report discusses how the nature of the surface topographical features influences the capillary attraction by influencing the local contact angle and by pinning of the three-phase contact line. The effect is clearly dependent on whether the surface features exist in the form of crevices or as extending ridges.
