Effect of internal structure and resin deformability on drying rate and stress in convective drying of silica-latex coatings

Latex paint is an aqueous dispersion of nano-sized polymer particles that can form a thin film by itself or mixed with rigid particles. We have developed an apparatus that can simultaneously measure drying rate and stress generation and have investigated the film formation process of a latex-only coating layer under convection drying. In the present study, we adopted the same method to investigate the film formation process of the silica-latex coating layer. As a result, we were able to systematically correlate the drying rate change by the equivalent thickness of latex particles accumulated with silica particles at the drying surface. Furthermore, it is unveiled that the drying rate in the former stage depends on drying temperature, while the drying rate changed to be dominated by silica content after the particle-packing layer was formed over the entire coating layer. On the other hand, the model we proposed for stress generation, considering the temperature effect on latex deformability, was found to be applicable to the present experimental system by replacing a portion of deformable particles with rigid particles.

Elastic plastic fracture mechanics investigation of toughness of wet colloidal particulate materials: Influence of saturation

HYPOTHESIS

Previous use of linear elastic fracture mechanics to estimate toughness of wet particulate materials underestimates the toughness because it does not account for plastic deformation as a dissipation mechanism. Plastic deformation is responsible for the majority of energy dissipated during the fracture of wet colloidal particulate materials. Plastic deformation around the crack tip increases with saturation of the particulate body. The toughness of the body increases with increasing saturation.

EXPERIMENTS

Elastic plastic fracture mechanics using the J-integral approach was used for the first time to measure the fracture toughness (J_IC) of wet micron sized alumina powder bodies as a function of saturation. The samples were prepared by slip casting. The saturation was controlled by treatment in a humidity chamber. The elastic modulus (E) and the energy dissipated by plastic flow (A_pl) were measured in uniaxial compression. The critical stress intensity factor (K_IC) was measured using a diametral compression sample with a flaw of known size. The fracture toughness (J_IC) was calculated from these measured quantities and the geometry of the specimen.

FINDINGS

Elastic plastic fracture mechanics was used for the first time to quantitively account for plastic deformation of wet particulate materials. The linear elastic fracture mechanics approach previously used accounted for less than 1% of the total energy dissipated in fracture. Toughness (J_IC) was found to increase with increasing saturation due to plastic deformation that increased with saturation level. The improved understanding of toughness as a function of saturation will aid in providing quantitative analysis of cracking in drying colloidal films and bodies.

Apparatus for simultaneous stress and weight measurement during film drying in an environmentally controlled chamber

The drying behavior of coatings is essential for the development of formulations in order to obtain reliable and defect free finishes. There are two major measures of interest: the development of the stress responsible for cracking and the drying rate that gives insight into the morphological structure. The cantilever deflection method is the predominant way of determining stresses under defined drying conditions such as temperature and humidity. However, both measures of interest are currently obtained using two different coatings when dried in a chamber or a single coating with simultaneous measurements that can only be dried under ambient conditions. In this paper, we present an apparatus design based on the cantilever deflection method that allows simultaneous measurement of the stress and drying rate in an environmentally controlled chamber.

Synthesis of cellulose nanocrystal armored latex particles for mechanically strong nanocomposite films

A fabrication method of gold coated colloidosomes and their application as targeted drug carriers

Colloidosomes have attracted considerable attention in recent years because of their potential applications in a range of industries, such as food, bioreactors and medicine. However, traditional polymer shell colloidosomes leak low molecular weight encapsulated materials due to their intrinsic shell permeability. Here, we report aqueous core colloidosomes coated with a gold shell, which make the capsules impermeable. The shells can be ruptured using ultrasound. The gold coated colloidosomes are prepared by making an aqueous core capsule with a polymer shell and then adding HAuCl4, surfactant and l-ascorbic acid to form a second shell. We propose to use the capsules as drug carriers. The gold coated colloidosomes demonstrate a low cytotoxicity and after triggering, both encapsulated doxorubicin and broken gold fragments kill cancer cells. In addition, we set up a targeting model by modifying the gold shell colloidosomes using 4,4'-dithiodibutyric acid and crosslinking them with proteins-rabbit immunoglobulin G (IgG). Label-free surface plasmon resonance was used to test the specific targeting of the functional gold shells with rabbit antigen. The results demonstrate that a new type of functional gold coated colloidosome with non-permeability, ultrasound sensitivity and immunoassay targeting could be applied to many medical applications.

Drying of thin colloidal films

When thin films of colloidal fluids are dried, a range of transitions are observed and the final film profile is found to depend on the processes that occur during the drying step. This article describes the drying process, initially concentrating on the various transitions. Particles are seen to initially consolidate at the edge of a drying droplet, the so-called coffee-ring effect. Flow is seen to be from the centre of the drop towards the edge and a front of close-packed particles passes horizontally across the film. Just behind the particle front the now solid film often displays cracks and finally the film is observed to de-wet. These various transitions are explained, with particular reference to the capillary pressure which forms in the solidified region of the film. The reasons for cracking in thin films is explored as well as various methods to minimize its effect. Methods to obtain stratified coatings through a single application are considered for a one-dimensional drying problem and this is then extended to two-dimensional films. Different evaporative models are described, including the physical reason for enhanced evaporation at the edge of droplets. The various scenarios when evaporation is found to be uniform across a drying film are then explained. Finally different experimental techniques for examining the drying step are mentioned and the article ends with suggested areas that warrant further study.
