Spontaneous surface flattening via layer-by-layer assembly of interdiffusing polyelectrolyte multilayers

Nanopatterned conductive polymer films as a Pt, TCO-free counter electrode for low-cost dye-sensitized solar cells

A low-cost nanopatterned highly conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) thin film was fabricated on a flexible plastic substrate via a chemical polymerization method combined with a nanoimprinting technique and used as a platinum (Pt), TCO-free counter electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The catalytic properties of the nanopatterned PEDOT as the counter electrode in DSSCs were studied using cyclic voltammetry, J-V measurements, impedance spectroscopy, and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. The nanopatterned PEDOT counter electrodes exhibit better functionality as a counter electrode for tri-iodide reduction when compared to non-patterned PEDOT-based counter electrodes. The Pt and TCO-free DSSCs with a nanopatterned PEDOT-based counter electrode exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 7.1% under one sunlight illumination (100 mW cm(-2)), which is comparable to that of conventional DSSCs with standard platinum Pt/FTO paired counter electrodes. The ability to modulate catalytic functionality with changes in nanoscale morphology represents a promising route for developing new counter electrodes of Pt and TCO-free DSSCs.

Cross-linked polyelectrolyte multilayers for marine antifouling applications

A polyionic multilayer film was fabricated by layer-by-layer (LbL) sequential deposition followed by cross-linking under mild conditions on a substrate surface to inhibit marine fouling. A novel polyanion, featuring methyl ester groups for an easy cross-linking was used as a generic solution for stabilization of LbL films in a harsh environment. Covalent cross-linking was confirmed by FTIR and XPS spectroscopy. AFM was used to observe film morphology and its variation because of cross-linking, as well as to measure the thickness of the LbL films. Cross-linking improved the stability of the LbL film when it was immersed in artificial seawater, natural seawater, and in a polar organic solvent (DMSO). No changes in the thickness and topography of the film were observed in these media. The LbL films prevented settlement of Amphibalanus amphitrite barnacle cyprids and reduced adhesion of the benthic diatom Amphora coffeaeformis. Assay results indicated that the cross-linking process did not weaken the antifouling effect of LbL films. The high stability and low degree of fouling make these coatings potentially promising candidates in marine applications.

Layer-by-layer assembly of polyelectrolyte multilayers in three-dimensional inverse opal structured templates

A novel means of layer-by-layer deposition (LbL) of polyelectrolyte multilayers on three-dimensionally porous inverse opal (3D-IO) structures is presented. The 3D-IO structures comprising UV-curable polymer are highly flexible and can be readily demonstrated as free-standing films with double-sided open porosity over a large scale. A conflict between the intrinsically hydrophobic polymeric structures and waterborne characteristics of the LbL deposition process is overcome by employing a mixed solvent system of water and alcohol. The deposition pH of the LbL assembly can strongly affect the charge density and the degree of entanglement of polyelectrolyte chains, resulting in contrastingly different film deposition and growth behaviors. Since this method utilizes a three-dimensionally structured surface as a deposition substrate, 3D-IO films with a thickness of tens of micrometers can be uniformly and completely deposited with polyelectrolyte multilayers using only several tens of bilayer depositions, which can offer a new pathway of fabricating functionalized polymeric films. Finally, the LbL treated 3D-IO films are applied to nanofiltration membranes for removing multivalent metallic cations. Due to the enhanced Donnan exclusion effect as a result of multiple interfaces formed inside the 3D-IO structures and the relatively large volumetric ratio of water-permeable polyelectrolyte complexes, outstanding membrane performance was observed. Specifically, a good rejection rate of metal ions was achieved even under highly diluted feed conditions without sacrificing the high permeation flux.
