Abstract
Quantum dot sensitized solar cells have attracted much attention due to their high efficiency of photoelectric conversion and low manufacturing cost. In this study, a series of heterojunction structures with cubic (MA)4 chalcogenide quantum dots adsorbing on the (001) surface of TiO2 were investigated, in order to explore new quantum dot sensitizers for solar cell applications. Our study revealed that sulfide and selenide quantum dots are more suitable for solar energy harvesting, compared to their oxide counterparts, due to their smaller ionization potentials and smaller HOMO-LUMO (highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) gaps, but in general exhibit weaker adsorption on TiO2. M4A3B and M4A2B2 quantum dots were designed in combination with the advantage of higher adsorption stability and photoelectric conversion capability. Our theoretical predictions for the structurally precise chalcogenide systems suggest a possible direction for the design of quantum-dot sensitized solar cells.

Abstract
The synthesis, characterization, and coordination chemistry of a doubly π-extended bipyridine analogue, 6,6'-biphenanthridine (biphe), is presented. The structure of the molecule has been determined in the solid state by X-ray diffraction, showing an angle of 72.6° between the phenanthridine planes. The free, uncoordinated organic molecule displays blue fluorescence in solution. It can be singly protonated with strong acids, and the protonated form displays more intense yellow emission. The effect of acid on the excited states is interpreted with the aid of TDDFT calculations. Two Ru(II) coordination complexes, tris(6,6'-biphenanthridine)ruthenium(II) dichloride, [Ru(biphe)3]Cl2, and bis(2,2'-bipyridine)(6,6'-biphenanthridine)ruthenium(II) tetraphenylborate, [Ru(bpy)2(biphe)](BPh4)2, are also reported and their structures determined in the solid state by X-ray diffraction. Both complexes display emission at 77 K that is strongly bathochromically shifted by almost 200 nm compared to that of the archetypal 3MLCT emitter [Ru(bpy)3]2+. Such a red shift is consistent with the more extended conjugation and lower-energy π* orbitals associated with the biphe ligand, lowering the energy of the 3MLCT excited state, as revealed by TDDFT calculations. The efficient non-radiative decay that is typical of such low-energy emitters renders the phosphorescence extremely weak and short-lived at ambient temperature, and rapid ligand photodissociation also competes with radiative decay, especially in the heteroleptic complex. Electrochemical analysis illustrates the effect of biphe's stabilized vacant π* manifold, with multiple reversible reductions evident at much less negative potentials than those observed for [Ru(bpy)3]2+.

Abstract
ZnO nanorod (NR) based inorganic quantum dot sensitized solar cells have gained tremendous attention for use in next generation solar cells. ZnO/ZnSe-core/shell NR arrays (NRAs) with various densities were grown on an Au@ZnO seed layer (Au = 0.0, 4.0, 8.0 and 16.0 nm) on glass supported fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates using low cost hydrothermal and ion-exchange approaches. PbS quantum dots (QDs) were loaded into the ZnO/ZnSe core/shell NRAs via a successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. The morphology, structural and optical properties of the core/shell NRAs were investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-vis spectroscopy measurements. It was observed that the density of the ZnO/ZnSe NRAs decreases with increasing Au buffer layer thickness. The absorption decreases along with a decrease in the ZnO/ZnSe NRA density. The ZnO NRs/PbS QD photoelectrode performs poorly; however, after introducing a ZnSe shell on the core-ZnO, the solar cells parameters changed according to the ZnO/ZnSe NRA density. Values of η = ∼0.88%, J SC = 14.60 mA cm-2, and V OC = 190 mV, and η = ∼0.25%, J SC = 6.77 mA cm-2, and V OC = 115 mV were obtained for the highest and lowest NRA densities, respectively. Although the photovoltaic performance of these photoelectrodes is still inferior, further improvement of the device would be possible by suppressing surface defects, and through quality optimization of the ZnO/ZnSe NRAs, PbS QDs, counter electrode and electrolyte.

Abstract
Four complexes of the general form cis-Ru(phen')(dcb)(NCS)2, where dcb is 4,4'-(CO2H)2-2,2'-bipyridine and phen' is 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 4,7-(C6H5)2-phen (Ph2-phen), 4,7-(CH3)2-phen (Me2-phen), or 3,4,7,8-(CH3)4-phen (Me4-phen), were anchored to mesoporous TiO2 thin films for applications as sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The compounds displayed metal based reductions Eo(RuIII/II) = 1.01 ± 0.05 V vs NHE and were potent reductants competent of excited-state electron transfer to TiO2 with yields ϕinj ≥ 0.75 in acetonitrile electrolytes. Average charge recombination rate constants, kcr, abstracted from nanosecond transient absorption measurements, and the apparent diffusion coefficients for lateral hole-hopping, abstracted from chronabsorptometry measurements, showed the same sensitizer dependency: Ru(Me4-phen) > Ru(Ph2-phen) > Ru(Me2-phen) ≈ Ru(phen). When used in operational solar cells, Ru(Ph2-phen) was most optimal with an efficiency of (6.6 ± 0.5)% in ionic liquids under 1 sun illumination. The superior performance of Ru(Ph2-phen) was traced to a higher injection yield and more efficient regeneration due to an unusually small sensitivity of kcr to the number of injected electrons.

Abstract
In this work, we describe the efficiency enhancement in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) by using TiO2/silver nanoplate plasmonic nanocomposite photoanodes. The nanocomposite photoanodes with tunable plasmonic properties assembled from shape/size-selected silver (Ag) nanoplates were applied to enhance the light absorption for high-performance DSSCs. It was found that the localized surface plasmon resonance can be tuned over a range from 500 to 1000 nm, which is strongly dependent on the shape and size of Ag nanoplates and the refractive index of the surrounding dielectric. The effects of the size and shape of Ag nanoplates on the surface plasmonic resonance and the efficiency of DSSCs were evaluated experimentally. Furthermore, a three-dimensional finite element method was employed to investigate the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) for the shape and size effect of Ag nanoplates.

Abstract
Nanostructured metal oxide semiconductors (MOS), such as TiO2 and ZnO, have been regarded as an attractive material for the quantum dots sensitized solar cells (QDSCs), owing to their large specific surface area for loading a large amount of quantum dots (QDs) and strong scattering effect for capturing a sufficient fraction of photons. However, the large surface area of such nanostructures also provides easy pathways for charge recombination, and surface defects and connections between adjacent nanoparticles may retard effective charge injection and charge transport, leading to a loss of power conversion efficiency. Introduction of the surface modification for MOS or QDs has been thought an effective approach to improve the performance of QDSC. In this paper, the recent advances in the control of nanostructures and interfaces in QDSCs and prospects for the further development with higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) have been discussed.

Abstract
We have developed a facile method to fabricate CdSe-CdS quantum dot sensitized hierarchical ZnO nanostructures for quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) by combining a hydrothermal method, successive ionic layer adsorption and chemical reaction (SILAR) techniques. The method consists of the growth of the ZnO hierarchical structure on ITO substrates via a hydrothermal method and the layer deposition of double quantum dots CdSe and CdS by SILAR. The CdSe-CdS QDs co-sensitized ZnO hierarchical structures show enhanced light absorption in the entire visible light range. The photovoltaic performance of QDCSs based on CdSe-CdS QDs co-sensitized ZnO hierarchical structures was evaluated. As photoanodes for QDSCs, the CdSe-CdS QDs double-sensitized ZnO hierarchical structures demonstrate an increased Jsc and improved power conversion efficiency of up to 1.39%. Under light illumination, photons are captured by QDs, yielding electron-hole pairs that are rapidly separated into electrons and holes at the interface between the ZnO and the QDs. The electrons are transferred to the conduction band of ZnO and the holes are released by redox couples in the liquid polysulfide (S(2-)/Sx(2-)) electrolyte, resulting in greatly improved photo-electrical conversion efficiency of QDSCs. The results suggest that it is very promising and feasible to enhance light absorption, carrier generation, and effective carrier separation via band engineering by CdSe-CdS QDs co-sensitization, and the method reported here displays a great potential for applications to be scaled up.

Abstract
We report on a sexithienyl and two donor-acceptor-donor oligothiophenes, employing benzothiadiazole and isoindigo as electron-acceptors, each functionalized with a phosphonic acid group for anchoring onto TiO2 substrates as light-harvesting molecules for dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These dyes absorb light to wavelengths as long as 700 nm, as their optical HOMO/LUMO energy gaps are reduced from 2.40 to 1.77 eV with increasing acceptor strength. The oligomers were adsorbed onto mesoporous TiO2 films on fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO)/glass substrates and incorporated into DSSCs, which show AM1.5 power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) ranging between 2.6% and 6.4%. This work demonstrates that the donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) molecular structures coupled to phosphonic acid anchoring groups, which have not been used in DSSCs, can lead to high PCEs.

Abstract
We have designed and synthesized a new thiocyante-free ruthenium complex containing 2,6-bis(1-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine, coded as SPS-G3, and it has been used as an efficient photosensitizer for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Upon sensitization of SPS-G3 on nanocrystalline TiO2 film, the DSSC test cell yielded a large short-circuit photocurrent (16.15 mA cm(-2)), an open circuit voltage of 0.52 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 0.72, resulting in an overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.04% under simulated AM 1.5 solar irradiation (100 mW cm(-2)). DSSCs were prepared by adding various concentrations of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) (up to 0.5 wt %) into the TiO2 nanoparticles. Optimization of MWCNT concentration (0.3 wt %) lead to PCE values as high as 7.76%, while the test cells employing pure TiO2 photoanode obtained an efficiency of 6.04%. The results indicate that the PCE of MWCNTs/TiO2 composite DSSCs are dependent on the quantity of MWCNTs loading on the photoanodes. A small amount (0.3 wt %) clearly enhances the PCE of DSSC, while the excessive MWCNT loading lowers the photovoltaic performance of the DSSC. The increase in the PCE has been attributed to the decrease in charge-transport resistance, charge-transport time, and electron lifetime, which are estimated from electrochemical impedance spectra.

Abstract
We report here the synthesis and full chemical and physical characterizations of the first stable heteroleptic copper(I)-bis(diimine) complexes designed for implementation in dye sensitized solar cells (DSC). Thanks to the HETPHEN concept, pure and stable heteroleptic copper(I) complexes were isolated. Anchorage of the sensitizers was provided by 2,2'-biquinoline-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (dcbqH2), while sterically challenged ligands 2,9-dimesityl-1,10-phenanthroline (L0) and N-hexyl-2,9-dimesityl-1,10-phenanthroline-[a:b]imidazo-(4'-dianisylaminophenyl) (L1) were used to complete the copper(I) coordination sphere. The resulting heteroleptic complexes C1 and C2 exhibit a broad MLCT transition spreading over a wide wavelength domain, especially when adsorbed onto nanoparticulate TiO2 photoanodes, providing a rather comprehensive visible light collection. The corresponding DSC were evaluated under AM 1.5 simulated solar light and rather weak performances were obtained owing to small J(sc) and V(oc). This is due to a combination of low extinction coefficient and poor driving forces for the various interfacial processes. However, significant improvements in the performances were monitored upon ageing in the dark, likely due to beneficial reorganization of the dye monolayers. The possibility to isolate stable asymmetric systems paves the way for structurally assisted photo-induced charge injection from the chemisorbed copper(i) based sensitizers into the conduction band of TiO2, through charge vectorialization.

Abstract
Photoelectrode made of nanocable structure of ZnO nanorods (NR) coated with TiO(2) nanosheets (NSs) was investigated for CdS/CdSe quantum dot co-sensitized solar cells. ZnO NRs prepared solution reaction at 60 °C served as the backbone for direct electron transport in view of the single crystallinity of the ZnO NRs and the high electron mobility of ZnO semiconductor. Anatase TiO(2) NSs with the thickness of ∼10 nm and the length of ∼100 nm were assembled onto the surface of ZnO NRs via a solvothermal method. It was found that the thin shell of TiO(2) might have remarkable influence on the quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) through (a) increasing the surface area of ZnO NRs to allow for adsorbing more quantum dots (QDs), which led to high short current density, (b) forming an energy barrier that hindered the electrons in the ZnO from being back to the electrolyte and QDs, and thus, reduced the charge recombination rate, resulting in prolonged electron lifetime and enhanced open voltage. In comparison with the case of ZnO NRs, the short-circuit current density, open-circuit voltage, fill factor and charge recombination resistance of ZnO/TiO(2) nanocable photoelectrode increase by 3%, 44%, 48% and 220%, respectively. As a result, a power conversion efficiency of 2.7% of QDSCs with core-shell structural nanocable photoelectrode has been obtained, which is as much as 230% of that of 1.2% obtained for ZnO NR photoelectrode.
