Drying and nondrying layer-by-layer assembly for the fabrication of sodium silicate/TiO2 nanoparticle composite films

Physical Chemistry Study of Collagen-Based Multilayer Films

The surface properties of a biomaterial play an important role in cell behavior, e.g., recolonization, proliferation, and migration. Collagen is known to favor wound healing. In this study, collagen (COL)-based layer-by-layer (LbL) films were built using different macromolecules as a partner, i.e., tannic acid (TA), a natural polyphenol known to establish hydrogen bonds with protein, heparin (HEP), an anionic polysaccharide, and poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS), an anionic synthetic polyelectrolyte. To cover the whole surface of the substrate with a minimal number of deposition steps, several parameters of the film buildup were optimized, such as the pH value of the solutions, the dipping time, and the salt (sodium chloride) concentration. The morphology of the films was characterized by atomic force microscopy. Built at an acidic pH, the stability of COL-based LbL films was studied when in contact with a physiological medium as well as the TA release from COL/TA films. In contrast to COL/PSS and COL/HEP LbL films, COL/TA films showed a good proliferation of human fibroblasts. These results validate the choice of TA and COL as components of LbL films for biomedical coatings.

Layer-by-layer assembly in nanochannels: assembly mechanism and applications

Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly is a versatile technology to construct multifunctional nanomaterials using various supporting substrates, enabled by the large selection freedom of building materials and diversity of possible driving forces. The fine regulation over the film thickness and structure provides an elegant way to tune the physical/chemical properties by mild assembly conditions (e.g. pH, ion strength). In this review, we focus on LbL in nanochannels, which exhibit a different growth mechanism compared to "open", convex substrates. The assembly mechanism in nanochannels is discussed in detail, followed by the summary of applications of LbL assemblies liberated from nanochannel templates which can be used as nanoreactors, drug carriers and transporting channels across cell membranes. For fluidic applications, robust membrane substrates are required to keep in place nanotube arrays for membrane-based separation, purification, biosensing and energy harvesting, which are also discussed. The good compatibility of LbL with crossover technologies from other fields allows researchers to further extend this technology to a broader range of research fields, which is expected to result in an increased number of applications of LbL technology in the future.

Photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B catalyzed by TiO2films on a capillary column

TiO₂ films on a capillary column were prepared using tetrabutoxytitanium as a source of TiO₂via the sol–gel method. The film thickness showed a linear increase with tetrabutoxytitanium concentration. The specific surface area of the film was improved by adding polyethylene glycol with different molecular weights. Under optimal conditions, the prepared film had a good mesoporous structure with specific surface area of 47.72 m² g⁻¹, and showed nearly spherical nanoparticles with a 10 nm diameter and anatase phase. Influences of the thickness, specific surface area, and initial solution concentration on photodegradation of rhodamine B using TiO₂ films as a catalyst were investigated. The results showed that the photodegradation efficiency increased with an increasing thickness and specific surface area of TiO₂ films. For a rhodamine B solution of 15 mg L⁻¹, the photodegradation efficiency was 98.33% in 30 min under the optimal conditions. The catalysts could be reused up to eight times with almost the same efficiency, indicating a firm immobilization of films on the inner wall of the capillary. Therefore, TiO₂ films are promising for the treatment of wastewater.

A self-cleaning underwater superoleophobic mesh for oil-water separation

Oil–water separation has recently become a global challenging task because of the frequent occurrence of oil spill accidents due to the offshore oil production and transportation, and there is an increasing demand for the development of effective and inexpensive approaches for the cleaning-up of the oily pollution in water system. In this study, a self-cleaning underwater superoleophobic mesh that can be used for oil-water separation is prepared by the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of sodium silicate and TiO₂ nanoparticles on the stainless steel mesh. The integration of the self-cleaning property into the all-inorganic separation mesh by using TiO₂ enables the convenient removal of the contaminants by ultraviolet (UV) illumination, and allows for the facile recovery of the separation ability of the contaminated mesh, making it promising for practial oil-water separation applications.
