In situ optical microspectroscopy monitoring of binary colloidal crystal growth dynamics via evaporation-induced cooperative self-assembly

Binary Colloidal Crystal Films Grown by Vertical Evaporation of Silica Nanoparticle Suspensions

Despite intensive research efforts in the synthesis of binary colloidal crystals, the production of well ordered binary colloidal crystal films over large areas continues to be synthetically challenging. In this paper, we investigate the phase behavior of binary mixtures of l-arginine-stabilized 36 and 22 nm silica nanoparticles deposited as centimeter-scale thin films onto a vertical substrate via evaporative assembly. By adjusting the temperature and relative colloid composition under high humidity conditions, we controlled the order of the resultant colloidal crystal films. The domain size of the AB₂ binary crystalline phase increased with an excess of small (B) particles and a very slow evaporation rate below 45 °C, with the best results obtained at 30° and 35 °C.

Structural colour of unary and binary colloidal crystals probed by scanning transmission X-ray microscopy and optical microscopy

Colloidal crystals composed of micro- or nano- colloids have been investigated in various fields such as photonics due to their unique optical properties. Binary colloidal crystals have an outstanding potential for fine-tuning material properties by changing the components, concentration, or size of colloids. Because of their tunable optical, electrical, magnetic, and mechanical properties, those materials attracted great attention. However, it has been hard to elucidate internal structures without fluorescent labelling or cross-sectioning. Here, we demonstrate the structural analysis of not only unary but also binary colloidal crystals using scanning transmission x-ray microscopy and compare the results with colloidal structures and optical properties observed by optical microscopy. Based on the comparison of images obtained by these two methods, the domains of colloidal crystals consisting of different structures and colours were directly identified without any additional sample preparation. Therefore, it was possible to investigate the structural colours of local domains of unary and binary colloidal crystals such as the face centred cubic (FCC) structure with different orientations, that is FCC (111) and FCC (001), and hexagonal close-packed structure, HCP (0001).

Vertical convective coassembly of refractory YSZ inverse opals from crystalline nanoparticles

A facile deposition method of 3D photonic crystals made of yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was developed. YSZ nanoparticles with primary particle size below 10 nm and cubic crystalline phase were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of solutions of zirconyl nitrate, yttrium nitrate and acetylacetone. Before coassembly with polystyrene (PS) microspheres, a dispersant Dolapix CE64 was added to the dialyzed sol of YSZ nanoparticles to render their surface negatively charged. Vertical convective coassembly resulted in 3D ordered YSZ/PS hybrid films, which were inverted at 500 °C in air to produce inverse opals. The linear shrinkage of the coatings was in the range 15-20%, below previously reported values for YSZ. The obtained coatings demonstrated pronounced photonic properties and retained their ordered structure after annealing at 1000 °C for 2 h. Increasing the filling fraction of crystalline nanoparticles in the templates should enable production of fully functional 3D photonic crystals for applications in high-temperature photonics.
