On the influence of surfactants on the adsorption of polysaccharide-based polymers on cotton studied by means of fluorescence spectroscopy

Using Polymer-Surfactant Charge Ratio to Control Synergistic Flocculation of Anionic Particulate Dispersions

This study investigates the flocculation induced destabilization of particulate dispersions by oppositely charged polymer−surfactant complexes, with a particular focus on controlling interactions by modulating the charge ratio Z, (where Z = [+polymer]/[−surfactant]) via [−surfactant] at fixed Cpolymer. Cationic hydroxyethyl cellulose (cat-HEC) polymer-sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) complexes were prepared with either excess polymer (Z > 1) or surfactant (Z < 1) charges. Anionic particulate dispersions (Ludox and polystyrene-butadiene Latex) were then exposed to the complexes, and solvent relaxation NMR was used to characterize the particle surfaces before and after exposure. In both particulate dispersions, flocculation induced destabilization was enhanced after exposure to cat-HEC-SDS complexes with Z > 1, leaving any excess particle surfaces uncoated after gentle centrifugation. However, complexes with Z < 1 showed no adsorption and destabilization in the Ludox dispersions and only slight destabilization in the Latex dispersions due to possible hydrophobic interactions. Substituting SDS for non-ionic surfactant (C12E6) showed no additional destabilization of the dispersions, but post-centrifugation relaxation rates indicated preferential adsorption of C12E6 onto the particle surfaces. Since the dominant forces are electrostatic, this study highlights the possibility of controlling the interactions between oppositely charged polymer−surfactant complexes and particle surfaces by modulating Z through [−surfactant].

The flotation and adsorption of mixed collectors on oxide and silicate minerals

The analysis of flotation and adsorption of mixed collectors on oxide and silicate minerals is of great importance for both industrial applications and theoretical research. Over the past years, significant progress has been achieved in understanding the adsorption of single collectors in micelles as well as at interfaces. By contrast, the self-assembly of mixed collectors at liquid/air and solid/liquid interfaces remains a developing area as a result of the complexity of the mixed systems involved and the limited availability of suitable analytical techniques. In this work, we systematically review the processes involved in the adsorption of mixed collectors onto micelles and at interface by examining four specific points, namely, theoretical background, factors that affect adsorption, analytical techniques, and self-assembly of mixed surfactants at the mineral/liquid interface. In the first part, the theoretical background of collector mixtures is introduced, together with several core solution theories, which are classified according to their application in the analysis of physicochemical properties of mixed collector systems. In the second part, we discuss the factors that can influence adsorption, including factors related to the structure of collectors and environmental conditions. We summarize their influence on the adsorption of mixed systems, with the objective to provide guidance on the progress achieved in this field to date. Advances in measurement techniques can greatly promote our understanding of adsorption processes. In the third part, therefore, modern techniques such as optical reflectometry, neutron scattering, neutron reflectometry, thermogravimetric analysis, fluorescence spectroscopy, ultrafiltration, atomic force microscopy, analytical ultracentrifugation, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Vibrational Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations are introduced in virtue of their application. Finally, focusing on oxide and silicate minerals, we review and summarize the flotation and adsorption of three most widely used mixed surfactant systems (anionic-cationic, anionic-nonionic, and cationic-nonionic) at the liquid/mineral interface in order to fully understand the self-assembly progress. In the end, the paper gives a brief future outlook of the possible development in the mixed surfactants.

Isotope microscopy visualization of the adsorption profile of 2-methylisoborneol and geosmin in powdered activated carbon

Decreasing the particle size of powdered activated carbon may enhance its equilibrium adsorption capacity for small molecules and micropollutants, such as 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) and geosmin, as well as for macromolecules and natural organic matter. Shell adsorption, in which adsorbates do not completely penetrate the adsorbent but instead preferentially adsorb near the outer surface of the adsorbent, may explain this enhancement in equilibrium adsorption capacity. Here, we used isotope microscopy and deuterium-doped MIB and geosmin to directly visualize the solid-phase adsorbate concentration profiles of MIB and geosmin in carbon particles. The deuterium/hydrogen ratio, which we used as an index of the solid-phase concentration of MIB and geosmin, was higher in the shell region than in the inner region of carbon particles. Solid-phase concentrations of MIB and geosmin obtained from the deuterium/hydrogen ratio roughly agreed with those predicted by shell adsorption model analyses of isotherm data. The direct visualization of the localization of micropollutant adsorbates in activated carbon particles provided direct evidence of shell adsorption.

From crab shells to smart systems: chitosan-alkylethoxy carboxylate complexes

In this work, self-assembly of alkyl ethylene oxide carboxylates and the biopolymer chitosan into supramolecular structures with various shapes is presented. Our investigations were done at pH 4.0, where the chitosan is almost fully charged and the surfactants are partially deprotonated. By changing the alkyl chain length and the number of ethylenoxide units very different water-soluble complexes can be obtained, ranging from globular micelles incorporated in a chitosan network to formation of ordered multiwalled vesicles. The structural characteristics of these complexes can be finely controlled by the mixing ratio of chitosan and surfactant, i.e., simply by the solutions composition. For instance, the vesicle wall thickness can be varied between 5 and 50 nm just by varying the mixing ratio. Accordingly, we expect this system to be an outstanding carrier for hydrophilic compounds with tunable release time option. Moreover, an easy route for preparation of chitosan-based complexes in the solid state with controlled mesoscopic order is presented. This work opens the way to prepare biofriendly materials on the basis of chitosan and mild anionic surfactants which are rather versatile with respect to their structure and properties, allowing for preparation of complexes with highly variable structures in both aqueous and solid phase. Formation of such different structures can be exploited for preparation of carriers, which are able to transport hydrophilic as well as hydrophobic molecules. Furthermore, as chitosan is well known to exhibit antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, different applications of these complexes can be indicated, i.e., as drug delivery systems or as coatings for medical implants.

Chitosan/alkylethoxy carboxylates: a surprising variety of structures

In this work, we present a comprehensive structural characterization of long-term stable complexes formed by biopolycation chitosan and oppositely charged nonaoxyethylene oleylether carboxylate. These two components are attractive for many potential applications, with chitosan being a bioderived polymer and the surfactant being ecologically benign and mild. Experiments were performed at different mixing ratios Z (ratio of the nominal charges of surfactant/polyelectrolyte) and different pH values such that the degree of ionization of the surfactant is largely changed whereas that of chitosan is only slightly affected. The structural characterization was performed by combining static and dynamic light scattering (SLS and DLS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) to cover a large structural range. Highly complex behavior is observed, with three generic structures formed that depend on pH and the mixing ratio, namely, (i) a micelle-decorated network at low Z and pH, (ii) rodlike complexes with the presence of aligned micelles at medium Z and pH, and (iii) compacted micellar aggregates forming a supraaggregate surrounded by a chitosan shell at high Z and pH. Accordingly, the state of aggregation in these mixtures can be tuned structurally over quite a range only by rather small changes in pH.
