Methodology of measurement of ionic strength based on field-flow fractionation

In this report, we put forward an experimental method to determine the ionic strength of an aqueous solution. To this end, we have developed a theory of ionic strength I expressed in terms of the retention ratios in field-flow fractionation (FFF) as I^1/2=κ(1-R)/(1-R_o)-ε^-1/2. Here R is a measured retention ratio using an FFF technique, for instance, sedimentation FFF (SdFFF), and R_o is the sterically-corrected standard retention ratio as given by the standard retention theory (SRT) for a latex particle system of diameter d. For a standard latex system with known d (or R_o) and I, we can construct a linear calibration of I^1/2 against (1-R)/(1-R_o). Therefore, if we measure the retention ratio R of a carrier liquid of which ionic strength is of interest, then we will be able to estimate the ionic strength from the calibration curve thus built. In this paper, we have demonstrated the relation of I^1/2with respect to (1-R)/(1-R_o) for the polystyrene latex systems of which information on R, R_o, and I is available from Ref. [1].

On-line determination of soluble Zn content and size of the residual fraction in PM2.5 incubated in various aqueous media

Transition metals in airborne particulate matter, especially those with aerodynamic diameters no more than 2.5 μm (PM_2.5), have attracted considerable attention due to their potential environmental and human health risks. However, determination of these potential risks requires comprehensive knowledge of their dissolution behavior and residual size in aqueous media. Herein, we describe an analytical method for on-line determination of the soluble fraction of Zn as a model transition metal and the size of residual PM_2.5 using hollow fiber flow field-flow fractionation (HF5) coupled with UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. HF5 was directly applied on the incubated samples in pure water (PW), simulated natural water (SNW), and simulated lung fluid (SLF) due to its efficient in-line filtration and excellent fractionation resolution. Firstly, the potential of the proposed method (under optimized conditions) for size characterization was assessed against commercial silica microparticles, and results in good agreement with manufacturer and scanning electron microscopy values were obtained. The accuracy of quantification of soluble Zn in various media was then validated using a standard reference material in terms of satisfactory recoveries compared with the reference values. For the real PM_2.5 samples collected from different sites in Beijing, China, the soluble Zn percentages in PW, SNW, and SLF were within 15.4-16.7%, 10.6-12.7%, and 43.1-46.9%, respectively, with the amount of particles smaller than ~10 nm released from PM_2.5 increasing in the order of SNW < PW < SLF. The proposed HF5-based method provides a powerful and efficient tool for the quantification of soluble transition metal fractions and size characterization of residual particles with reduced analysis times, thus possessing great promise in real-time tracking of the transformation of PM_2.5 in environmental and physiological media and in risk assessment.

Shape-based separation of micro-/nanoparticles in liquid phases

The production of particles with shape-specific properties is reliant upon the separation of micro-/nanoparticles of particular shapes from particle mixtures of similar volumes. However, compared to a large number of size-based particle separation methods, shape-based separation methods have not been adequately explored. We review various up-to-date approaches to shape-based separation of rigid micro-/nanoparticles in liquid phases including size exclusion chromatography, field flow fractionation, deterministic lateral displacement, inertial focusing, electrophoresis, magnetophoresis, self-assembly precipitation, and centrifugation. We discuss separation mechanisms by classifying them as either changes in surface interactions or extensions of size-based separation. The latter includes geometric restrictions and shape-dependent transport properties.

Explicit role of ionic strength in retention behavior of polystyrene latex particles in sedimentation field-flow fractionation: Slip boundary model

We investigate an explicit role of the ionic strength in the retention behaviors of polystyrene (PS) latex particles in sedimentation field-flow fractionation (SdFFF) by hinging upon the retention theory recently developed [1] asR=(R_o+v_b^*)/(1+v_b^*). Here R is an experimental retention ratio, and R_o is the analytical expression of the standard retention theory based on the parabolic flow velocity. The reduced boundary velocityv_b^* is expressed in terms of the ionic strength I of the carrier liquid as v_b^*=v_b,o^*/(1+εI), where v_b,o^*=0.070and ε=60 mM^-1 for all the PS latex systems under investigation. We then apply this to study the explicit ionic strength effect on the retention behaviors of PS beads of 200, 300, 400, and 500nm, respectively. As a primary result, the strong dependence of the retention ratio on the ionic strength can be quantitatively accounted for in an excellent accuracy: The slip effect at the channel surface is significant, particularly when I≲0.5mM, without showing any distinguishable dependence on the specific additives to control I, such as FL-70, SDS, NaNO₃, and NaN₃. Based on the present study, we put forward an experimental means to estimate the ionic strength of an aqueous solution using an FFF technique.
