Chemical Systems Involving Two Competitive Self-Catalytic Reactions

Self-catalytic reactions are chemical phenomena, in which a product catalyzes the reactions of substrates further to yield products. A significant amplification of product concentration occurs during the reactions in a dilute solution, which exhibit notable properties such as sigmoidal kinetics, seeding effects, and thermal hysteresis. Chemical systems involving two competitive self-catalytic reactions can be considered, in which the competitive formation of two products occurs, which is affected by environmental changes, subtle perturbations, and fluctuations, and notable chemical phenomena appear such as formation of different structures in response to slow/fast temperature changes, chiral symmetry breaking, shortcut in reaction time, homogeneous-heterogeneous transitions, and mechanical responses. Studies on such chemical systems provide understanding on biological systems and can also be extended to the development of novel functional materials.

Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Chiral Cylindrical Molecular Complexes: Functional Heterogeneous Liquid-Solid Materials Formed by Helicene Oligomers

Chiral cylindrical molecular complexes of homo- and hetero-double-helices derived from helicene oligomers self-assemble in solution, providing functional heterogeneous liquid-solid materials. Gels and liotropic liquid crystals are formed by fibril self-assembly in solution; molecular monolayers and fibril films are formed by self-assembly on solid surfaces; gels containing gold nanoparticles emit light; silica nanoparticles aggregate and adsorb double-helices. Notable dynamics appears during self-assembly, including multistep self-assembly, solid surface catalyzed double-helix formation, sigmoidal and stairwise kinetics, molecular recognition of nanoparticles, discontinuous self-assembly, materials clocking, chiral symmetry breaking and homogeneous-heterogeneous transitions. These phenomena are derived from strong intercomplex interactions of chiral cylindrical molecular complexes.

[Synthesis, Aggregation, Self-assembly, and Dynamic Properties of Helicene Oligomers]

 Biological systems exhibit dynamic phenomena at the macroscopic level as a result of the hierarchical integration of phenomena at the molecular level. For example, a number of amino acids compose actin proteins, which form three-dimensional structures determined by the sequence of amino acids. They form fibers by self-assembly, which then form ordered structures such as meshes, lyotropic liquid crystals (LCs), and bundles. The dynamic and reversible polymorphism between these nano- to centimeter-sized ordered structures is essential for biological functions such as cell division, contraction, and locomotion. To understand biological systems and create new functional materials, it is essential to develop a methodology to integrate phenomena at the molecular level into those at the macroscopic level using synthetic molecules. In this research, synthetic oligomers containing helicenes, which exhibit reversible structural transitions between cylindrical double helices and random coils in response to thermal stimuli, were employed as building blocks for the development of such a methodology. The properties of homo- and hetero-double helices at the molecular level were first controlled by taking advantage of the diversity of their molecular structures. Then, nano- to micrometer-sized structures were constructed by the self-assembly of hetero-double helices, which include fibers/gels, vesicles, and lyotropic LCs, and their dynamic properties were controlled by molecular design.

Supramolecular Helical Systems: Helical Assemblies of Small Molecules, Foldamers, and Polymers with Chiral Amplification and Their Functions

In this review, we describe the recent advances in supramolecular helical assemblies formed from chiral and achiral small molecules, oligomers (foldamers), and helical and nonhelical polymers from the viewpoints of their formations with unique chiral phenomena, such as amplification of chirality during the dynamic helically assembled processes, properties, and specific functionalities, some of which have not been observed in or achieved by biological systems. In addition, a brief historical overview of the helical assemblies of small molecules and remarkable progress in the synthesis of single-stranded and multistranded helical foldamers and polymers, their properties, structures, and functions, mainly since 2009, will also be described.

Energy Aspects of Thermal Molecular Switching: Molecular Thermal Hysteresis of Helicene Oligomers

Molecular switching is a phenomenon by which a molecule reversibly changes its structure and state in response to external stimuli or energy. Herein, molecular switching is discussed from thermodynamic and kinetic aspects in terms of energy supply with an emphasis on the thermal switching exhibited by helicene oligomers. It includes the inversion of relative thermodynamic stability induced by temperature changes and molecular thermal hysteresis in a closed system. The thermal phenomenon associated with the oligomers involves population/concentration changes between metastable states under nonequilibrium thermodynamic control.

Heating/cooling stimulus induces three-state molecular switching of pseudoenantiomeric aminomethylenehelicene oligomers: reversible nonequilibrium thermodynamic processes

A 1:1 mixture of pseudoenantiomeric aminomethylenehelicene (P)-tetramer and (M)-pentamer formed three states, namely, the heterodouble helices B and C and the random coil A. At high temperatures, A is the most stable. At low temperatures, C is the most stable, and the structural changes from A to the metastable state B to the product C occur, where B and C have pseudoenantiomeric helical structures. Heating then converts C to A. Essentially, all the molecules change their structure from A to B to C to A. Various nonequilibrium reversible thermodynamic responses appeared depending on thermal conditions: The metastable states A and B can be interconverted with thermal hysteresis without forming C in a far-from-equilibrium manner; three-state hysteresis occurs; states A and B can be frozen at low temperatures and defrosted by warming. An energy and population model for the three-state switching is given, involving inversion of thermodynamic stability and thermal hysteresis.

Co-assembled white-light-emitting hydrogel of melamine

A coassembled light-harvesting hydrogel of melamine (M), 6,7-dimethoxy-2,4[1H, 3H]-quinazolinedione (Q) with riboflavin (R), is used to produce a white-light-emitting hydrogel (W-gel) by mixing with the dye rhodamine B (RhB) in a requisite proportion. Addition of R to the Q solution causes both static and dynamic quenching to the emission of Q as evident from the Stern-Volmer plot and the emission of R shows a gradual increase in intensity. On addition of RhB to an aqueous solution of R, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) occurs, showing an emission peak at 581 nm. In a solution of constant molar ratio of Q and R, addition of RhB causes a quenching of emission of R with no effect on the emission of Q, indicating that the energy transfer takes place only between R and RhB. In the MQR coassembled hydrogel containing RhB, the gel melting temperature is lower than those of MQ and MQR gel, but the storage modulus remains almost unaffected. The oscillatory stress experiment indicates a gradual decrease of critical stress values for breaking of MQ, MQR, and W-gels attributed to the coassembly. In contrast to the solution of Q and R, energy transfer occurs on addition of RhB to the MQ gel. By varying the RhB and R concentration in the 1:1 MQ gel white light emission is observed for the W-gel composition having molar ratio of M:Q:R:RhB = 100:100:0.5:0.02 with the Commission Internationale de L'eclairage (CIE) coordinates of 0.31 and 0.36 for the excitation at 360 nm. However, in the sol state, the CIE coordinates of the hybrid differ significantly from those of the white light.
