Chemical passivation processes for biofunctionalization schemes on semiconductor surfaces

α-Amino Thiophene on Si(100)2 × 1: Adsorption and transition states investigated by van der Waals corrected DFT and CI-NEB

The adsorption of [Formula: see text]-AminoTiophene on Si(100)2[Formula: see text][Formula: see text][Formula: see text]1 was investigated by van der Waals corrected DFT and climbing image nudged-elastic band, in view of potential applications in silicon-based technologies. The overall scenario indicates that dissociative states are more favorable than the molecular ones, the one occurring through N–C bond breakage and Si–N and Si–C bond formation, having the largest adsorption energy (2.71[Formula: see text]eV). Furthermore, this configuration is also kinetically easily accessible, being connecting to one of the physisorbed states (Phys1) by a nearly barrierless transition. Also the molecular states are relatively easily kinetically accessible, with transition barriers from the corresponding physisorbed states in the 0.05–0.30[Formula: see text]eV range. At variance with this, the transitions to the dissociative state characterized by N–H bond breakage and Si–N and Si–H bond formation (N–H Diss) either from physisorbed or from molecular states are all significantly higher, i.e. in the 0.63–2.70[Formula: see text]eV range. Finally, the effects of the coverage on the adsorption energy were evaluated for the N–H Diss configuration and indicating a gain, whose extent depends both on the coverage and on the surface arrangement, i.e. whether cis or trans. The trend is different if the vdW forces are excluded.

Dehydrohalogenation Condensation Reaction of Phenylhydrazine with Cl-Terminated Si(111) Surfaces

Formation of stable organic-inorganic contacts with silicon often requires oxygen- and carbon-free interfaces. Some of the general approaches to create such interfaces rely on the formation of a Si-N bond. A reaction of dehydrohalogenation condensation of Cl-terminated Si(111) surface with phenylhydrazine is investigated as a means to introduce a simple function to the surface using a -NH-NH₂ moiety as opposed to previously investigated approaches. The use of substituted hydrazine allows for the formation of a stable structure that is less strained compared to the previously investigated primary amines and leads to minimal surface oxidation. The process is confirmed by a combination of infrared studies, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry investigations. Density functional theory is utilized to yield a plausible surface reaction mechanism and provide a set of experimental observables to compare with these data.

Nanoparticle layer deposition for highly controlled multilayer formation based on high- coverage monolayers of nanoparticles

This paper establishes a strategy for chemical deposition of functionalized nanoparticles onto solid substrates in a layer-by-layer process based on self-limiting surface chemical reactions leading to complete monolayer formation within the multilayer system without any additional intermediate layers - nanoparticle layer deposition (NPLD). This approach is fundamentally different from previously established traditional layer-by-layer deposition techniques and is conceptually more similar to well-known atomic and molecular - layer deposition processes. The NPLD approach uses efficient chemical functionalization of the solid substrate material and complementary functionalization of nanoparticles to produce a nearly 100% coverage of these nanoparticles with the use of "click chemistry". Following this initial deposition, a second complete monolayer of nanoparticles is deposited using a copper-catalyzed "click reaction" with the azide-terminated silica nanoparticles of a different size. This layer-by-layer growth is demonstrated to produce stable covalently-bound multilayers of nearly perfect structure over macroscopic solid substrates. The formation of stable covalent bonds is confirmed spectroscopically and the stability of the multilayers produced is tested by sonication in a variety of common solvents. The 1-, 2- and 3-layer structures are interrogated by electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy and the thickness of the multilayers formed is fully consistent with that expected for highly efficient monolayer formation with each cycle of growth. This approach can be extended to include a variety of materials deposited in a predesigned sequence on different substrates with a highly conformal filling.

Adsorption of 2-vinyl thiophene on Si(100)2 × 1: A van Der Waals corrected DFT study

Oligo- and polythiophenes on surfaces play a fundamental role in building molecular circuits and organic-based electronics and may be assembled via interaction of the monomer units with the surface. In this framework, the nature of interaction of 2-vinyl thiophene (2VTP), a conjugated heteroaromatic monomer unit, with the Si (100) surface was studied by means of density functional theory (DFT). In particular, structural optimizations were performed comparing the effects of the inclusion of van der Waals (VdW) forces. It came out that the adsorption through the double bond is energetically favored, if VdW forces are included, whereas the adsorption through both aromatic ring and double bond simultaneously is more stable, if they are excluded. Physisorbed states were singled out and the barriers between two of them and the corresponding chemisorbed states were calculated along with the imaginary frequencies of the transition states. Also the transition energies have different values if the VdW forces are included.

Attachment chemistry of PCBM to a primary-amine-terminated organic monolayer on a Si(111) surface

Interfacing multifunctional molecules with semiconductor surfaces has a variety of applications; however, it is important to understand the selectivity of target surface reactions to produce the surface with desired functionality. In this work, a silicon surface modified with 1-amino-10-undecene was reacted with [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) in toluene. Two possible competing reactions for PCBM, via the ester group and by direct attachment to the C60 portion, are analyzed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy, supplemented by density functional theory calculations, suggest that despite the similarity of the energetics for those two reaction pathways, predominant chemisorption occurs via the direct attachment of the C60 cage to the primary amino group of the functionalized silicon surface.
