Controlling porphyrin nanoarchitectures at solid interfaces

Control of post-growth processes for the selection of metallo-tetraphenylporphyrin nanowires

Controlling self-organization of small organic molecules in nanostructures with a desired shape and size is one of the main challenges in organic nanoelectronics. Here, a strategy for selectively growing uniaxially aligned nanowires of meso-tetraphenyl porphyrin-Zn(ii) (ZnTPP) is presented. ZnTPP is deposited on an organic single crystal, namely potassium hydrogen phthalate, by organic molecular beam epitaxy. The films typically display a rather rich surface morphology, characterized by the presence of nanowires and other nm-sized aggregates, most of them unstable over time. Post-growth processes occurring via quasi-Ostwald ripening both in air and in vacuum demonstrate an aging protocol in vacuum as a tool for the selection of ZnTPP nanowires, whose morphology and uniaxial orientation are demonstrated to be led by organic epitaxy. The ability of growing ZnTPP nanowires with a unique crystal structure and precise orientation gives the chance to observe the intrinsic optical anisotropy of the triclinic polymorph of ZnTPP crystal and establishes the role of intermolecular interactions, providing new perspectives in the study of the intrinsic physical properties of ZnTPP crystals.

Self-assembly as a key player for materials nanoarchitectonics

The development of science and technology of advanced materials using nanoscale units can be conducted by a novel concept involving combination of nanotechnology methodology with various research disciplines, especially supramolecular chemistry. The novel concept is called 'nanoarchitectonics' where self-assembly processes are crucial in many cases involving a wide range of component materials. This review of self-assembly processes re-examines recent progress in materials nanoarchitectonics. It is composed of three main sections: (1) the first short section describes typical examples of self-assembly research to outline the matters discussed in this review; (2) the second section summarizes self-assemblies at interfaces from general viewpoints; and (3) the final section is focused on self-assembly processes at interfaces. The examples presented demonstrate the strikingly wide range of possibilities and future potential of self-assembly processes and their important contribution to materials nanoarchitectonics. The research examples described in this review cover variously structured objects including molecular machines, molecular receptors, molecular pliers, molecular rotors, nanoparticles, nanosheets, nanotubes, nanowires, nanoflakes, nanocubes, nanodisks, nanoring, block copolymers, hyperbranched polymers, supramolecular polymers, supramolecular gels, liquid crystals, Langmuir monolayers, Langmuir-Blodgett films, self-assembled monolayers, thin films, layer-by-layer structures, breath figure motif structures, two-dimensional molecular patterns, fullerene crystals, metal-organic frameworks, coordination polymers, coordination capsules, porous carbon spheres, mesoporous materials, polynuclear catalysts, DNA origamis, transmembrane channels, peptide conjugates, and vesicles, as well as functional materials for sensing, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, photovoltaics, charge transport, excitation energy transfer, light-harvesting, photocatalysts, field effect transistors, logic gates, organic semiconductors, thin-film-based devices, drug delivery, cell culture, supramolecular differentiation, molecular recognition, molecular tuning, and hand-operating (hand-operated) nanotechnology.

Solid surface vs. liquid surface: nanoarchitectonics, molecular machines, and DNA origami

Comparisons of science and technology between these solid and liquid surfaces would be a good navigation for current-to-future developments.

Synthesis of a poly(ethylene glycol) galloyl sensitizer tip for an 'all-in-one' photodynamic device

This paper describes the synthesis of a specialized silica tip for an optical fiber device capable of delivering all components necessary for photodynamic therapy. Oxygen, light and a cleavable tripolyethylene glycol (PEG)-galloyl pheophorbide sensitizer are simultaneously delivered by the silica tip, where the tip was synthesized in six steps. A comparison of synthetic steps to reach PEGylated sensitizers bound to fluorinated silica and a previously reported Teflon/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanocomposite ( Ghosh, G. et al. J. Phys. Chem. B 2015, 119, 4155- 4164) was made. The hydrolytic stability of the attached PEGs and the extent to which the PEG groups enhance solubility will also be discussed. The new triPEG-galloyl sensitizer has the potential for use in intraoperative pointsource photodynamic therapy which aims for precision treatment of residual disease. Reorganization of porphyrin nanoparticle morphology driven by surface energetics

Organic nanoparticles (ONp) of an Fe(III) porphyrin appended with four [Formula: see text]-polyethyleneglyco-pyridinium moieties prepared in acetonitrile were deposited onto hydrophilic or hydrophobic Si surfaces. Self-organized by intermolecular interactions, ONp reorganize in response to environmental changes. Mechanisms for the control of nanoparticle morphologies and surface patterning by varying surface energies are discussed.

Nonionic amphiphile nanoarchitectonics: self-assembly into micelles and lyotropic liquid crystals

Amphiphiles, molecules that possess both hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties, are architecturally simple molecules that can spontaneously self-assemble into complex hierarchical structures from lower to higher dimensions either in the bulk phase or at an interface. Recent developments in multifunctional nanostructure design using the advanced concept of nanoarchitectonics utilize this simple process of assembly. Amphiphilic self-assemblies involving lipids or proteins mimic the structure of biological systems, thus highlighting the necessity of a fundamental physical understanding of amphiphilic self-assembly towards a realization of the complex mechanisms operating in nature. Herein, we describe self-assembled microstructures of biocompatible and biodegradable tetraglycerol lauryl ether (C12G4) nonionic surfactant in an aqueous solvent system. Temperature-composition analyses of equilibrium phases identified by using small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) provide strong evidence of various spontaneously self-assembled mesostructures, such as normal micelles (Wm), hexagonal liquid crystal (H1), and reverse micelles (Om). In contrast to conventional poly(oxyethylene) nonionic surfactants, C12G4 did not exhibit the clouding phenomenon at higher temperatures (phase separation was not observed up to 100 °C), demonstrating the greater thermal stability of the self-assembled mesophases. Generalized indirect Fourier transformation (GIFT) evaluation of the SAXS data confirmed the formation of core-shell-type spherical micelles with a maximum dimension ca. 8.7 nm. The shape and size of the C12G4 micelles remained apparently unchanged over a wide range of concentrations (up to 20%), but intermicellar interactions increased and could be described by the Percus-Yevick (PY) theory (after Carnahan and Starling), which provides a very accurate analytical expression for the osmotic pressure of a monodisperse hard sphere.
