Adsorption of mixtures of poly(amidoamine) dendrimers and sodium dodecyl sulfate at the air-water interface

The Demulsification Properties of Cationic Hyperbranched Polyamidoamines for Polymer Flooding Emulsions and Microemulsions

Polymer flooding emulsions and microemulsions caused by tertiary oil recovery technologies are harmful to the environment due to their excellent stability. Two cationic hyperbranched polyamidoamines (H-PAMAM), named as H-PAMAM-HA and H-PAMAM-ETA, were obtained by changing the terminal denotation agents to H-PAMAM, which was characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR, and amine possession, thereby confirmed the modification. Samples (300 mg/L) were added to the polymer flooding emulsion (1500 mg/L oil concentration) at 30 °C for 30 min and the H-PAMAM-HA and H-PAMAM-ETA were shown to perform at 88% and 91% deoil efficiency. Additionally, the increased settling time and the raised temperature enhanced performance. For example, an oil removal ratio of 97.7% was observed after dealing with the emulsion for 30 min at 60 °C, while 98.5% deoil efficiency was obtained after 90 min at 45 °C for the 300 mg/L H-PAMAM-ETA. To determine the differences when dealing with the emulsion, the interfacial tension, ζ potential, and turbidity measurements were fully estimated. Moreover, diametrically different demulsification mechanisms were found when the samples were utilized to treat the microemulsion. The modified demulsifiers showed excellent demulsification efficiency via their obvious electroneutralization and bridge functions, while the H-PAMAM appeared to enhance the stability of the microemulsion.

Multilayers formed by polyelectrolyte-surfactant and related mixtures at the air-water interface

The structure and occurrence of multilayered adsorption at the air-water interface of surfactants in combination with other oppositely charged species is reviewed. The main species that trigger multilayer formation are multiply charged metal, oligo- and polyions. The structures vary from the attachment of one or two more or less complete surfactant bilayers to the initial surfactant monolayer at the air-water interface to the attachment of a greater number of bilayers with a more defective structure. The majority of the wide range of observations of such structures have been made using neutron reflectometry. The possible mechanisms for the attraction of surfactant bilayers to an air-water interface are discussed and particular attention is given to the question of whether these structures are true equilibrium structures.

Interactions between model cell membranes and the neuroactive drug propofol

Vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy (VSFS) complemented by surface pressure isotherm and neutron reflectometry (NR) experiments were employed to investigate the interactions between propofol, a small amphiphilic molecule that currently is the most common general anaesthetic drug, and phospholipid monolayers. A series of biologically relevant saturated phospholipids of varying chain length from C₁₈ to C₁₄ were spread on either pure water or propofol (2,6-bis(1-methylethyl)phenol) solution in a Langmuir trough, and the change in the molecular structure of the film, induced by the interaction with propofol, was studied with respect to the surface pressure. The results from the surface pressure isotherm experiments revealed that propofol, as long as it remains at the interface, enhances the fluidity of the phospholipid monolayer. The VSF spectra demonstrate that for each phospholipid the amount of propofol in the monolayer region decreases with increasing surface pressure. Such squeeze out is in contrast to the enhanced interactions that can be exhibited by more complex amphiphilic molecules such as peptides. At surface pressures of 22-25 mN m^-1, which are relevant for biological cell membranes, most of the propofol has been expelled from the monolayer, especially in the case of the C₁₆ and C₁₈ phospholipids that adopt a liquid condensed phase packing of its alkyl tails. At lower surface pressures of 5 mN m^-1, the effect of propofol on the structure of the alkyl tails is enhanced when the phospholipids are present in a liquid expanded phase. Specifically, for the C₁₆ phospholipid, NR data reveal that propofol is located exclusively in the head group region, which is rationalized in the context of previous studies. The results imply a non-homogeneous distribution of propofol in the plane of real cell membranes, which is an inference that requires urgent testing and may help to explain why such low concentration of the drug are required to induce general anaesthesia.

Achieving foaming control smartly: pre-solubilized flavor oil serves as an in situ homogeneous defoamer

In the wide application of aqueous foam, creating abundant foam and processing appropriate foaming control are both essential, depending upon the actual situation; the latter process is not only harder to achieve, but also more complicated to comprehensively understand on the molecular level. In this paper, a type of natural flavor oil, carvone, was solubilized in a micelle solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to study the effect on the foaming properties. The foamability and foam stability of the swollen micelle solutions were experimentally characterized, and the molecular behavior of the surfactant and oil molecules before, during and after the foaming process were investigated. It was found that the solubilized carvone co-adsorbed with SDS at the gas/water interface and caused a prominent effect on the foam film stability in several approaches, thereby making the flavor oil a possible foam controller that would not inhibit foam formation, but could eliminate foam efficiently once foam was undesired. Interestingly, it was found that the release of flavor in the foaming process was promoted. Detailed discussion of the interfacial behavior of carvone and the effect on the foaming properties of surfactants in different stages of foam may provide a theoretical foundation for exploring green and smart approaches in achieving foaming control.

Smart nanogels at the air/water interface: structural studies by neutron reflectivity

The development of effective transdermal drug delivery systems based on nanosized polymers requires a better understanding of the behaviour of such nanomaterials at interfaces. N-Isopropylacrylamide-based nanogels synthesized with different percentages of N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as cross-linker, ranging from 10 to 30%, were characterized at physiological temperature at the air/water interface, using neutron reflectivity (NR), with isotopic contrast variation, and surface tension measurements; this allowed us to resolve the adsorbed amount and the volume fraction of nanogels at the interface. A large conformational change for the nanogels results in strong deformations at the interface. As the percentage of cross-linker incorporated in the nanogels becomes higher, more rigid matrices are obtained, although less deformed, and the amount of adsorbed nanogels is increased. The data provide the first experimental evidence of structural changes of nanogels as a function of the degree of cross-linking at the air/water interface.

On the formation of dendrimer/nucleolipids surface films for directed self-assembly

We describe the formation and structure of nucleolipid/dendrimer multilayer films controlled by non-covalent interactions to obtain biomaterials that exhibit molecular recognition of nucleic acids. Layers of cationic poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers of generation 4 and the anionic nucleolipids 1,2-dilauroyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylnucleosides (DLPNs) based on uridine (DLPU) and adenosine (DLPA) were first formed at the silica-water interface. The PAMAM/DLPN layers were then exposed to short oligonucleotides, polynucleotides and single stranded DNA (ssDNA). The interfacial properties were characterized using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and neutron reflectometry. Both types of DLPN were found to adsorb as aggregates to preadsorbed PAMAM monolayers with a similar interfacial structure and composition before rinsing with pure aqueous solution. Nucleic acids were found to interact with PAMAM/DLPA layers due to base pairing interactions, while the PAMAM/DLPU layers did not have the same capability. This was attributed to the structure of the DLPA layer, which is formed by aggregates that extend from the interface towards the bulk after rinsing with pure solvent, while the DLPU layer forms compact structures. In complementary experiments using a different protocol, premixed PAMAM/DLPN samples adsorbed to hydrophilic silica only when the mixtures contained positively charged aggregates, which is rationalized in terms of electrostatic forces. The PAMAM/DLPA layers formed from the adsorption of these mixtures also bind ssDNA although in this case the adsorption is mediated by the opposite charges of the film and the nucleic acid rather than specific base pairing. The observed molecular recognition of nucleic acids by dendrimers functionalized via non-covalent interactions with nucleolipids is discussed in terms of biomedical applications such as gene vectors and biosensors.

Direct impact of nonequilibrium aggregates on the structure and morphology of Pdadmac/SDS layers at the air/water interface

We discuss different nonequilibrium mechanisms by which bulk aggregates directly modify, and can even control, the interfacial structure and morphology of an oppositely charged polyelectrolyte/surfactant (P/S) mixture. Samples are categorized at the air/water interface with respect to the dynamic changes in the bulk phase behavior, the bulk composition, and the sample history using complementary surface-sensitive techniques. First, we show that bulk aggregates can spontaneously interact with the adsorption layer and are retained in it and that this process occurs most readily for positively charged aggregates with an expanded structure. In this case, key nonequilibrium issues of aggregate dissociation and spreading of surface-active material at the interface have a marked influence on the macroscopic interfacial properties. In a second distinct mechanism, aggregates inherently become trapped at the interface during its creation and lateral flocculation occurs. This irreversible process is most pronounced for aggregates with the lowest charge. A third mechanism involves the deposition of aggregates at interfaces due to their transport under gravity. The specificity of this process at an interface depends on its location and is mediated by density effects in the bulk. The prevalence of each mechanism critically depends on a number of different factors, which are outlined systematically here for the first time. This study highlights the sheer complexity by which aggregates can directly impact the interfacial properties of a P/S mixture. Our findings offer scope for understanding seemingly mysterious irreproducible effects which can compromise the performance of formulations in wide-ranging applications from foams to emulsions and lubricants.
