Pseudosolid, shear-thinning gel formation in binary dispersions of metal oxide nanoparticles at low volume fractions

Design, characterization and applications of nanocolloidal hydrogels

Nanocolloidal gels (NCGs) are an emerging class of soft matter, in which nanoparticles act as building blocks of the colloidal network. Chemical or physical crosslinking enables NCG synthesis and assembly from a broad range of nanoparticles, polymers, and low-molecular weight molecules. The synergistic properties of NCGs are governed by nanoparticle composition, dimensions and shape, the mechanism of nanoparticle bonding, and the NCG architecture, as well as the nature of molecular crosslinkers. Nanocolloidal gels find applications in soft robotics, bioengineering, optically active coatings and sensors, optoelectronic devices, and absorbents. This review summarizes currently scattered aspects of NCG formation, properties, characterization, and applications. We describe the diversity of NCG building blocks, discuss the mechanisms of NCG formation, review characterization techniques, outline NCG fabrication and processing methods, and highlight most common NCG applications. The review is concluded with the discussion of perspectives in the design and development of NCGs.

Electrostatic Heteroaggregation: Fundamentals and Applications in Interfacial Engineering

The aggregation of oppositely charged soft materials (particles, surfactants, polyelectrolytes, etc.) that differ in one or more physical or chemical attributes, broadly referred to as electrostatic heteroaggregation, has been an active area of research for several decades now. While electrostatic heteroaggregation (EHA) is relevant to diverse fields such as environmental engineering, food technology, and pharmaceutical formulations, more recently there has been a resurgence to explore various aspects of this phenomenon in the context of interface stabilization and the development of functional materials. In this Feature Article, we provide an overview of the recent contributions of our group to this exciting field with particular emphasis on fundamental studies of electrostatic heteroaggregation between oppositely charged systems in the bulk, at interfaces, and across the bulk/interface. The influence of the size and shape of particles and the surface charge of heteroaggregates on the formation of Pickering emulsions and their utilization in the development of porous ceramics is discussed.

Porous Ceramics via Processable Pickering Emulsion Stabilized by Oppositely Charged Colloids

We report a method to produce processable Pickering emulsions in which electrostatic heteroaggregation of oppositely charged fumed silica and alumina particles is exploited. The ability of weakly charged heteroaggregates to adsorb to the oil-water interface favors the formation of highly stable emulsions. A control over the microstructure and rheology of the Pickering emulsion is demonstrated by tuning parameters such as composition, pH, and total concentration of particles. The Pickering emulsions formed under optimal conditions are found to be gel-like and are excellent templates for the fabrication of porous ceramics. Furthermore, the porous mullite ceramic structure which has exceptional thermal and chemical resistance under harsh environments is obtained by drying and sintering of the emulsion template. The phase evolution, microstructure, and porosity of the resulting ceramic are characterized.

Connecting particle interactions to agglomerate morphology and rheology of boehmite nanocrystal suspensions

HYPOTHESIS

The rheology of complex suspensions, such as nuclear waste slurries at the Hanford and Savannah River sites, imposes significant challenges on industrial-scale processing. Investigating the rheology and connecting it to the agglomerate morphology and underlying particle interactions in slurries will provide important fundamental knowledge, as well as prescriptive data for practical applications. Here, we use suspensions of nano-scale aluminum oxyhydroxide minerals in the form of boehmite as an analog of the radioactive waste slurry to investigate the correlation between particle interactions, agglomerate morphology, and slurry rheology.

EXPERIMENTS

A combination of Couette rheometry and small-angle scattering techniques (independently and simultaneously) were used to understand how agglomerate structure of slurry changes under flow and how these structural changes manifest themselves in the bulk rheology of the suspensions.

FINDINGS

Our experiments show that the boehmite slurries are thixotropic, with the rheology and structure of the suspensions changing with increasing exposure to flow. In the slurries, particle agglomerates begin as loose, system-spanning clusters, but exposure to moderate shear rates causes the agglomerates to irreversibly consolidate into denser clusters of finite size. The structural changes directly influence the rheological properties of the slurries such as viscosity and viscoelasticity. Our study shows that solution pH affects the amount of structural rearrangement and the kinetics of the rearrangement process, with an increase in pH leading to faster and more dramatic changes in bulk rheology, which can be understood via correlations between particle interactions and the strength of particle network. Nearly identical structural changes were also observed in Poiseuille flow geometries, implying that the observed changes are relevant in pipe flow as well.

Rheological characterization of yield stress gels formed via electrostatic heteroaggregation of metal oxide nanoparticles

Mixtures of fumed fractal metal oxide nanoparticles (np's) dispersed in water, at a solution pH where one species is positively charged and the other is negatively charged, form yield stress gels at volume fractions as low as 1.5%, due to electrostatic heteroaggregation into networks as confirmed by small-angle neutron scattering. These gels exhibit a measurable yield stress and an apparent viscosity that follows a power law relationship with shear rate. Rotational and oscillatory shear rheology is presented for binary mixtures of fumed silica, fumed alumina, and fumed titania in aqueous dispersions. Gels were characterized at various particle concentrations, solution pHs, mixture ratios, and salt concentrations. The strength of the gel network, as evaluated by the storage modulus and yield stress, is maximized when the mixture contains a mixture of particles with an approximately equal, but opposite, number of charged groups.

Ionic Liquid-Based Electrolytes Containing Surface-Functionalized Inorganic Nanofibers for Quasisolid Lithium Batteries

In the present study, surface amino-functionalized silica nanofibers (f-SiO₂NFs, average diameter = 400 and 1000 nm) are used as one-dimensional (1-D) fillers of ionic liquid (IL)-based quasisolid electrolytes. On adding f-SiO₂NFs to an IL (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide, EMITFSA) containing lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-amide (LiTFSA), the well-dispersed 1-D nanofillers easily form a three-dimensional network structure in the IL, function as physical cross-linkers, and increase the viscosity of the composites, consequently providing a quasisolid state at a 3.5 wt % fraction of the NFs. Rheological measurements demonstrate that the prepared composites exhibit "gel-like" characteristics at 40-150 °C. All prepared composites show high ionic conductivities, on the order of 10^-3 S cm^-1, around room temperature. To investigate the additive effect of f-SiO₂NFs in the composites, the lithium transference numbers are also evaluated. It is found that thinner NFs enhance the transference numbers of the composites. In addition, quasisolid lithium-ion cells containing the prepared composites demonstrate relatively high rate characteristics and good cycling performance at high temperature (125 °C).

Interfacial phenomena at a surface of individual and complex fumed nanooxides

Investigations of interfacial and temperature behaviors of nonpolar and polar adsorbates interacting with individual and complex fumed metal or metalloid oxides (FMO), initial and subjected to various treatments or chemical functionalization and compared to such porous adsorbents as silica gels, precipitated silica, mesoporous ordered silicas, filled polymeric composites, were analyzed. Complex nanooxides include core-shell nanoparticles, CSNP (50-200nm in size) with titania or alumina cores and silica or alumina shells in contrast to simple and smaller nanoparticles of individual FMO. CSNP could be destroyed under high-pressure cryogelation (HPCG) or mechanochemical activation (MCA). These treatments affect the structure of aggregates of nanoparticles and agglomerates of aggregates, resulting in their becoming more compacted. The analysis shows that complex FMO could be more sensitive to external actions than simple nanooxides such as fumed silica. Any treatment of 'soft' FMO affects the interfacial and temperature behaviors of polar and nonpolar adsorbates. Rearrangement of secondary particles and surface functionalization affects the freezing-melting point depression of adsorbates. For some adsorbates, open hysteresis loops became readily apparent in adsorption-desorption isotherms. Clustering of adsorbates bound in textural pores in aggregates of nanoparticles (i.e., voids between nanoparticles in secondary structures) causes reduced changes in enthalpy during phase transitions (freezing, fusion, evaporation). Freezing point depression and melting point elevation cause significant hysteresis freezing-melting effects for adsorbates bound to FMO in the textural pores. Relaxation phenomena for both low- and high-molecular weight adsorbates or filled polymeric composites are affected by the morphology of primary particles, structural organization of secondary particles of differently treated or functionalized FMO, content of adsorbates, co-adsorption order, and temperature.

Effect of hydrophilic silica nanoparticles on the magnetorheological properties of ferrofluids: a study using opto-magnetorheometer

For many technological applications of ferrofluids, the magnetorheological properties require being precisely controlled. We study the effect of hydrophilic silica on the magnetorheology of an oil-based ferrofluid containing Fe3O4 nanoparticles of size ∼10 nm. We observe that the presence of silica nanoparticles lowers the yield stresses, viscoelastic moduli, and shear thinning behavior of the ferrofluid because of the weakening of dipolar interactions, which was evident from the observed lower yield stresses exponent (<2). The ferrofluid containing silica exhibits a dominant elastic behavior, a reduced hysteresis during the forward and reverse magnetic field sweeps, and a longer linear viscoelastic regime under nonlinear deformation. The Mason number plots at low shear rates and magnetic fields show deviations from the master curve in the presence of silica. The magnetic field induced microstructures, visualized using opto-magnetorheometer, showed columnar aggregate structures along the field directions, which are reoriented along the shear flow direction at high shear rates. The image analysis shows that the average thickness of the columnar aggregates in pure ferrofluid is much larger than that of the mixed system, which suggests that the intervening silica matrix hampers the zippering transition of columns at higher magnetic field and shear rates. Our results suggest that optimization of rheological properties of ferrofluids is possible by carefully adding suitable silica nanoparticles, which may find practical applications such as dynamic seals, heat transfer, sensors, and opto-fluidic devices, etc.
