Synthesis of Metallic Nanostructures Using Ionizing Radiation and Their Applications

This paper reviews the radiation-induced synthesis of metallic nanostructures and their applications. Radiolysis is a powerful method for synthesizing metallic nanoparticles in solution and heterogeneous media, and it is a clean alternative to other existing physical, chemical, and physicochemical methods. By varying parameters such as the absorbed dose, dose rate, concentrations of metallic precursors, and nature of stabilizing agents, it is possible to control the size, shape, and morphology (alloy, core-shell, etc.) of the nanostructures and, consequently, their properties. Therefore, the as-synthesized nanoparticles have many potential applications in biology, medicine, (photo)catalysis, or energy conversion.

Controlled Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles in Copolymers Nanomolds by X-ray Radiolysis

We show by X-ray and neutron small-angle scattering that gold nanoparticles with controlled sizes and morphologies can be obtained by the metallic reduction of AuCl₄^- ions trapped in 3D organic molds by X-ray radiolysis. The molds are spherical frozen micelles of polystyrene-b-poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PDMAEMA) block copolymer in acidic aqueous solution with a PS spherical core surrounded by a corona of PDMAEMA chains in good solvent. The behavior of micelles is controlled by the [AuCl₄^-]/[DMAEMA] ratio R_{AuCl4^-/DMAEMA}. At low gold concentration, AuCl₄^- ions condense on the positively charged DMAEMA moieties without changing the behavior of the PDMAEMA chains. At intermediate gold concentration, the ions induce a progressive contraction of the corona's chains and dehydration of micelles. At large gold concentration, the corona becomes a fully dry phase loaded with gold ions, which induces micelle aggregation. Radiolysis of the solution by an intense X-ray beam produces different types of gold nanoparticles with respect to R_{AuCl4^-/DMAEMA} and irradiation time. At R_{AuCl4^-/DMAEMA} = 0.033, irradiation produces in the first step gold clusters in the micelle corona which in the second step merge to form nanoparticles of a similar size to that of the micelle. Conversely, at R_{AuCl4^-/DMAEMA} = 0.33, micelles do not operate as templates but only as nucleation zones and large nanoparticles grow outside the micelles.

Preparation of THPC-generated silver, platinum, and palladium nanoparticles and their use in the synthesis of Ag, Pt, Pd, and Pt/Ag nanoshells

Seed nanoparticles of Ag, Pt, and Pd (typically ≤4 nm in diameter) were synthesized using tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC) as reducing agent and utilized to prepare Ag, Pt, and Pd nanoshells, as well as hybrid Pt/Ag nanoshells, on silica cores.

Two step formation of metal aggregates by surface X-ray radiolysis under Langmuir monolayers: 2D followed by 3D growth

In order to form a nanostructured metallic layer below a Langmuir monolayer, radiolysis synthesis was carried out in an adapted geometry that we call surface X-ray radiolysis. In this procedure, an X-ray beam produced by a synchrotron beamline intercepts the surface of an aqueous metal-ion solution covered by a Langmuir monolayer at an angle of incidence below the critical angle for total internal reflection. Underneath the organic layer, the X-ray beam induces the radiolytic synthesis of a nanostructured metal-organic layer whose ultrathin thickness is defined by the vertical X-ray penetration depth. We have shown that increasing the X-ray flux on the surface, which considerably enhances the kinetics of the silver layer formation, results in a second growth regime of silver nanocrystals. Here the formation of the oriented thin layer is followed by the appearance of a 3D powder of silver clusters.

Chemistry for oncotheranostic gold nanoparticles

This review presents in a comprehensive ways the chemical methods used to functionalize gold nanoparticles with focus on anti-cancer applications. The review covers the parameters required for the synthesis gold nanoparticles with defined shapes and sizes, method for targeted delivery in tumours, and selected examples of anti-cancers compounds delivered with gold nanoparticles. A short survey of bioassays for oncology based on gold nanoparticles is also presented.
