Abstract
The preparation of supramolecular cyclodextrin (CD) assemblies and control of their assembly mode through guest inclusion in CD cavities have been actively studied. Contrarily, there are limited reports on the control of the assembly mode of guest-free CD molecules by external stimuli. Herein, we report the use of 2-O-methylated β-cyclodextrin (2-Me-β-CD) as an effective building block in fabricating supramolecular assemblies with diverse morphologies and molecular arrangements through assembly mode control by various stimuli, such as temperature and solvent. When methanol and diethyl carbonate were used as good and poor solvents, respectively, 2-Me-β-CD formed an amorphous assembly through solvent evaporation on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. Increasing the drying temperature and using crystalline substrates, such as highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and sapphire, changed the assembly mode of 2-Me-β-CD to a head-to-tail channel assembly. However, when a 2-Me-β-CD/1-propanol solution was mixed with linear alkanes as a poor solvent, 2-Me-β-CD with head-to-head channel assembly was formed as a precipitate. Additionally, when the corresponding cyclic alkane was used as an alternative poor solvent, an organogel composed of 2-Me-β-CD with head-to-head channel assemblies was obtained. The organogel obtained became a precipitate composed of 2-Me-β-CD with cage-type assembly upon heating at 50 °C. Among the supramolecular assemblies fabricated in this study, the head-to-tail channel assembly is a rare molecular assembly of β-CD and its derivatives. It possesses a modified columnar cavity that has potential applications in molecular recognition and sensing.

Abstract
Janus particles, consisting of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and organic particles of the complexes of α-cyclodextrin and polyethylene glycol (5) nonylphenyl ether, have been successfully fabricated via strain-driven microphase separation, which is distinct from conventional surface wetting-driven microphase separation. The as-prepared Janus particles can self-assemble into hollow spheres, which draw a clear analogy with self-assembly of lipids to vesicles.

Abstract
Sulfadiazine (SDA) and sulfisomidine (SFM) inclusion complexes with two cyclodextrins (α-CD and β-CD) are studied in aqueous as well as in solid state. The inclusion complexes are characterized by UV-visible, fluorescence, time correlated single photon counting, FTIR, DSC, PXRD and (1)H NMR techniques. The self assembled SDA/CD and SFM/CD inclusion complexes form different types of nano and microstructures. The self assembled nanoparticle morphologies are studied using SEM and TEM techniques. SDA/α-CD complex is formed hierarchal morphology, SDA/β-CD and SFM/β-CD complexes form the nanosheet self assembly. However, SFM/α-CD complex forms nanoporous sheet self assembly. van der Waals, hydrophobic and hydrogen bonding interaction play a vital role in the self assembling process.

Abstract
We present a versatile approach for tuning the surface functionality of an atomically precise 25 atom gold cluster using specific host-guest interactions between β-cyclodextrin (CD) and the ligand anchored on the cluster. The supramolecular interaction between the Au25 cluster protected by 4-(t-butyl)benzyl mercaptan, labeled Au25SBB18, and CD yielding Au25SBB18∩CDn (n = 1, 2, 3, and 4) has been probed experimentally using various spectroscopic techniques and was further analyzed by density functional theory calculations and molecular modeling. The viability of our method in modifying the properties of differently functionalized Au25 clusters is demonstrated. Besides modifying their optoelectronic properties, the CD moieties present on the cluster surface provide enhanced stability and optical responses which are crucial in view of the potential applications of these systems. Here, the CD molecules act as an umbrella which protects the fragile cluster core from the direct interaction with many destabilizing agents such as metal ions, ligands, and so on. Apart from the inherent biocompatibility of the CD-protected Au clusters, additional capabilities acquired by the supramolecular functionalization make such modified clusters preferred materials for applications, including those in biology.

Abstract
Different types of gels were prepared by combining poloxamines (Tetronic), i.e. poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(propylene oxide) (PEO/PPO) octablock star copolymers, and cyclodextrins (CD). Two different poloxamines with the same molecular weight (ca. 7000) but different molecular architectures were used. For each of their four diblock arms, direct Tetronic 904 presents PEO outer blocks while in reverse Tetronic 90R4 the hydrophilic PEO blocks are the inner ones. These gels were prepared by combining α-CD and poloxamine aqueous solutions. The physicochemical properties of these systems depend on several factors such as the structure of the block copolymers and the Tetronic/α-CD ratio. These gels were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), viscometry and X-ray diffraction measurements. The 90R4 gels present a consistency that makes them suitable for sustained drug delivery. The resulting gels were easily eroded: these complexes were dismantled when placed in a large amount of water, so controlled release of entrapped large molecules such as proteins (Bovine Serum Albumin, BSA) is feasible and can be tuned by varying the copolymer/CD ratio.

Abstract
A series of supramolecular aggregates were prepared using a poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide) (PPO-PEO-PPO) block copolymer and β- or α-cyclodextrins (CD). The combination of β-CD and the copolymer yields inclusion complexes (IC) with polypseudorotaxane structures. These are formed by complexation of the PPO blocks with β-CD molecules producing a powder precipitate with a certain crystallinity degree that can be evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). In contrast, when combining α-CD with the block copolymer, the observed effect is an increase in the viscosity of the mixtures yielding fluid gels. Two cooperative effects come into play: the complexation of PEO blocks with α-CD and the hydrophobic interactions between PPO blocks in aqueous media. These two combined interactions lead to the formation of a macromolecular network. The resulting fluid gels were characterized using different techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), viscometry, and XRD measurements.

Abstract
Although cyclodextrins (CDs) have been studied for over 100 years and can be found in at least 35 pharmaceutical products, they are still regarded as novel pharmaceutical excipients. CDs are oligosaccharides that possess biological properties that are similar to their linear counterparts, but some of their physicochemical properties differ. CDs are able to form water-soluble inclusion complexes with many poorly soluble lipophilic drugs. Thus, CDs are used to enhance the aqueous solubility of drugs and to improve drug bioavailability after, for example, oral administration. Through CD complexation, poorly soluble drugs can be formulated as aqueous parenteral solutions, nasal sprays and eye drop solutions. These oligosaccharides are being recognized as non-toxic and pharmacologically inactive excipients for both drug and food products. Recently, it has been observed that CDs and CD complexes in particular self-assemble to form nanoparticles and that, under certain conditions, these nanoparticles can self-assemble to form microparticles. These properties have changed the way we perform CD research and have given rise to new CD formulation opportunities. Here, the pharmaceutical applications of CDs are reviewed with an emphasis on their solubilizing properties, their tendency to self-assemble to form aggregates, CD ternary complexes, and their metabolism and pharmacokinetics.

Abstract
Iron-induced self-assembly of beta-cyclodextrin, beta-CD, into size controllable nanospheres with a well-defined spherical morphology and a relatively narrow size distribution was formed when acetone was added to a solution of beta-CD with iron(II) acetate, Fe(OAc)(2), in DMF. Thermogravimetric analysis, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, and high resolution transmission electron microscopy showed that the irons were present as a well-dispersed state in the beta-CD nanospheres. In the (1)H NMR spectrum of the beta-CD/Fe(OAc)(2), beta/Fe, solution before adding acetone, the peaks corresponding to beta-CD were broadened and their spin-spin splitting had disappeared. In particular, the beta/Fe solutions were found to remain in a clean solution state at 1 week after solution preparation. These findings indicate the isolation of individual iron ions caused by the surrounding of each ion with the beta-CD molecules in the solution before the addition of acetone. X-ray crystal structure analysis, morphological observations, and N(2) adsorption and desorption experiments showed that the beta-CD nanospheres were generated by the formation of iron-embedded beta-CD primary particles with disordered cage type structure and simultaneous spherical assembly of the primary particles during the addition of acetone to the beta/Fe solution with appropriate mole ratio between beta-CD and Fe(OAc)(2). Interestingly, the size of the beta-CD nanospheres could be simply controlled by changing the speed at which acetone was added to the solution, with higher acetone addition speeds yielding smaller particles.
