Abstract
Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is very useful, non-invasive tool for the analysis of surfaces pre-modified with biomolecules or by whole cells. This review focuses on the application of SECM technique for the analysis of surfaces pre-modified with enzymes (horseradish peroxidase, alkaline phosphatase and glucose oxidase) or labelled with antibody-enzyme conjugates. The working principles and operating modes of SECM are outlined. The applicability of feedback, generation-collection and redox competition modes of SECM on surfaces modified by enzymes or labelled with antibody-enzyme conjugates is discussed. SECM is important in the development of miniaturized bioanalytical systems with enzymes, since it can provide information about the local enzyme activity. Technical challenges and advantages of SECM, experimental parameters, used enzymes and redox mediators, immunoassay formats and analytical parameters of enzymatic SECM sensors and immunosensors are reviewed.

Abstract
The search for a new and efficient transducer that can electrically connect enzyme active sites, like flavin adenine dinucleotide in glucose oxidase (GOx), with the electrode surface is a cutting-edge research area. Currently, Os(bpy)-complex pendent polyvinylpyridine/polyvinyl imidazole/pyridinium hydrogel based chemically modified electrodes have been widely used for this purpose (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine). Herein, we report, a [Mn2III(phen)4(O)(Cl)2]2+ complex/Nafion-immobilized carboxylic acid-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE/f-MWCNT@Mn2(Phen)4O(Cl)2-Nf, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), prepared by an in-situ electrochemical method using the precursor, Mn(phen)2Cl2, as an efficient and low cost alternate to the Os-complex transducer, for the glucose oxidase enzyme (GOx) based bio-electro-catalytic system. The existence of the key active site, [Mn2III(phen)4(O)(Cl)2]2+, on the modified electrode was confirmed by physicochemical characterizations using transmission electron microscope, Raman, infrared, and UV-vis spectroscopes and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry techniques. The Mn-complex modified electrode showed a redox peak at E°' = 0.55 V vs Ag/AgCl in neutral solution with a surface excess (ΓMn) value of 5.6 × 10-9 mol cm-2. The GOx enzyme bioanode prepared by adsorbing GOx on the Mn-complex modified electrode has shown an efficient bioelectrocatalytic oxidation of glucose with a Tafel slope value of 111 mV dec-1. Amperometric i-t analysis of glucose showed a calibration plot in a linear range of 50-550 μM and with current sensitivity of 316.7 μA mM-1 cm-2. The current sensitivity value obtained here is about 2-80 000 times higher than that of the Os(bpy)-complex based transducers used for GOx based bio-electro-catalytic applications. Utilizing this new bioanode system along with a Pt-based oxygen reduction electrode, a new biofuel cell was constructed and achieved a power density value 7.5 μW cm-2.

Abstract
A versatile method was used to prepare modified surfaces on which metallic silver nanoparticles are immobilized on an organic layer. The preparation method takes advantage, on one hand, of the activated reactivity of some alkyl halides with Ag-Pd alloys to produce metallic silver nanoparticles and, on the other hand, of the facile production of an anchoring polyphenyl acetate layer by the electrografting of substituted diazonium salts on carbon surfaces. Transport properties inside such modified layers were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) in feedback mode, and conducting AFM imaging for characterizing the presence and nature of the conducting pathways. The modification of the blocking properties of the surface (or its conductivity) was found to vary to a large extent on the solvents used for surface examination (H(2)O, CH(2)Cl(2), and DMF).

Abstract
Electroconductive hydrogels (ECHs) are composite biomaterials that bring together the redox switching and electrical properties of inherently conductive electroactive polymers (CEPs) with the facile small molecule transport, high hydration levels and biocompatibility of cross-linked hydrogels. General methods for the synthesis of electroconductive hydrogels as polymer blends and as polymer co-networks via chemical oxidative, electrochemical and/or a combination of chemical oxidation followed by electrochemical polymerization techniques are reviewed. Specific examples are introduced to illustrate the preparation of electroconductive hydrogels that were synthesized from poly(HEMA)-based hydrogels with polyaniline and from poly(HEMA)-based hydrogels with polypyrrole. The key applications of electroconductive hydrogels; as biorecognition membranes for implantable biosensors, as electro-stimulated drug release devices for programmed delivery, and as the low interfacial impedance layers on neuronal prostheses are highlighted. These applications provide great new horizons for these stimuli responsive, biomimetic polymeric materials.
