Controllable aggregation and reversible pH sensitivity of AuNPs regulated by carboxymethyl cellulose

Effect of the Photoreduction Process on the Self-Cleaning and Antibacterial Activity of Au-Doped TiO2 Colloids on Cotton Fabric

This study aims at understanding the effect of the photoreduction process during the synthesis of gold (Au)-doped TiO2 colloids on the conferred functionalities on cotton fabrics. TiO2/Au and TiO2/Au/SiO2 colloids were synthesized through the sol-gel method with and without undergoing the photoreduction step based on different molar ratios of Au:Ti (0.001 and 0.01) and TiO2/SiO2 (1:1 and 1:2.3). The colloids were applied to cotton fabrics, and the obtained photocatalytic self-cleaning, wet photocatalytic activity, UV protection, and antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria were investigated. The obtained results demonstrated that the photoreduction of Au weakened the self-cleaning effect and reduced the photocatalytic activity of coated fabrics. Also, an excess amount of Au deteriorated the photocatalytic activity under both UV and visible light. The most efficient self-cleaning effect was obtained on fabrics coated with a ternary TiO2/Au/SiO2 colloid containing ionic Au, where it decomposed coffee and red-wine stains after 3 h of illumination. Adding silica (SiO2) made the fabrics superhydrophilic and led to greater methylene blue (MB) dye adsorption, a faster dye degradation pace, and more efficient stain removal. Moreover, the photoreduction process affected the size of Au nanoparticles (NPs), weakened the antibacterial activity of fabrics against both types of tested bacteria, and modestly increased the UV protection. In general, the photoactivity of Au-doped colloids was influenced by the synthesis method, the ionic and metallic states of the Au dopant, the concentration of the Au dopant, and the presence and concentration of silica.

AuNPs/CNC Nanocomposite with A "Dual Dispersion" Effect for LDI-TOF MS Analysis of Intact Proteins in NSCLC Serum Exosomes

Detecting exosomal markers using laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LDI-TOF MS) is a novel approach for examining liquid biopsies of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) samples. However, LDI-TOF MS is limited by low sensitivity and poor reproducibility when analyzing intact proteins directly. In this report, gold nanoparticles/cellulose nanocrystals (AuNPs/CNC) is introduced as the matrix for direct analysis of intact proteins in NSCLC serum exosomes. AuNPs/CNC with "dual dispersion" effects dispersed and stabilized AuNPs and improved ion inhibition effects caused by protein aggregation. These features increased the signal-to-noise ratio of [M+H]+ peaks by two orders of magnitude and lowered the detection limit of intact proteins to 0.01 mg mL-1. The coefficient of variation with or without AuNPs/CNC is measured as 10.2% and 32.5%, respectively. The excellent reproducibility yielded a linear relationship (y = 15.41x - 7.983, R2 = 0.989) over the protein concentration range of 0.01 to 20 mg mL-1. Finally, AuNPs/CNC-assisted LDI-TOF MS provides clinically relevant fingerprint information of exosomal proteins in NSCLC serum, and characteristic proteins S100 calcium-binding protein A10, Urokinase plasminogen activator surface receptor, Plasma protease C1 inhibitor, Tyrosine-protein kinase Fgr and Mannose-binding lectin associated serine protease 2 represented excellent predictive biomarkers of NSCLC risk.

Polysaccharide-based gold nanomaterials: Synthesis mechanism, polysaccharide structure-effect, and anticancer activity

Polysaccharide-based gold nanomaterials have attracted great interest in biomedical fields such as cancer therapy and immunomodulation due to their prolonged residence time in vivo and enhanced immune response. This review aims to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive summary of polysaccharide-based Au NMs synthesis, including mechanisms, polysaccharide structure-effects, and anticancer activity. Firstly, research progress on the synthesis mechanism of polysaccharide-based Au NMs was addressed, which included three types based on the variety of polysaccharides and reaction environment: breaking of glycosidic bonds via Au (III) or base-mediated production of highly reduced intermediates, reduction of free hydroxyl groups in polysaccharide molecules, and reduction of free amino groups in polysaccharide molecules. Then, the potential effects of polysaccharide structure characteristics (molecular weight, composition of monosaccharides, functional groups, glycosidic bonds, and chain conformation) and reaction conditions (the reaction temperature, reaction time, pH, concentration of gold precursor and polysaccharides) on the size and shape of Au NMs were explored. Finally, the current status of polysaccharide-based Au NMs cancer therapy was summarized before reaching our conclusions and perspectives.

Dual-Active Au@PNIPAm Nanozymes for Glucose Detection and Intracellular H2O2 Modulation

As a nanozyme, gold nanoparticles have some advantages compared with natural enzymes, such as stable structure, adjustable catalytic activity, multifunctionality, and recyclability. Due to their special dimension, they are easy to aggregate rapidly and lose their catalytic performance when exposed to normal saline or special pH environment. To avoid such a situation, Au@PNIPAm nanozymes with core-shell structure are constructed and their mimic peroxidase and glucose oxidase enzymatic activities are investigated. Kinetic examinations manifest that Au@PNIPAm nanozymes exhibited a high affinity for 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), and glucose. These predominant peroxidase-like and glucose-like oxidase Au@PNIPAm catalytic activities are successfully used in the detection of H₂O₂ or glucose (LOD is 2.43 mM or 5.07 mM). Otherwise, the potential Au@PNIPAm nanozymes are provided with a clear ability for decomposing the intracellular H₂O₂ in living cells. And it could protect cells from oxidative stress damage with inducing by H₂O₂. Therefore, it is easy to consider that Au@PNIPAm nanozymes show a certain possibility to retard cell senescence and increase the production of the hydroxyl radical which could prevent carcinogenesis of the cell.

Plant-mediated gold and silver nanoparticles as detectors of heavy metal contamination

Heavy metals are dumped into the environment as a result of human activities, posing a serious threat to ecology and human health. Surface water, potable drinking water, potable groundwater, and majority of wastewater include their traces, due to which, their detection by nanoparticles has received a lot of attention in recent years. Although microorganisms are utilised for green nanoparticle production, plant materials have recently been explored because they are more environmentally friendly, easier to scale up, and require fewer specific growth conditions. The production and attributes of nanoparticles synthesized by plant mediation could be enhanced through design of experiments approach, extending their feasibility in the detection of heavy metals in polluted environmental samples. A concise review on green synthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles utilizing plant phytochemicals, its mechanism of synthesis along with significance of design of experiments for enhancement, and their use as heavy metal contamination detectors is presented in the current study.

Multistage nucleic acid amplification induced nano-aggregation for 3D hotspots-improved SERS detection of circulating miRNAs

Circulating miRNAs in the blood can regulate disease development and thus indicate disease states via their various expression levels. For these reasons, circulating miRNAs constitute useful biomarkers, and an approach to the accurate detection of circulating miRNAs is attractive in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. However, methods for clinical detecting of circulating miRNA that take both sensitivity and practicality into account are still needed. Therefore, we aimed herein to solve some inherent problems in the actual detection using a robust surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform with integrated nucleic acid amplification and nanoparticle aggregation to construct 3D hotspots for improving performance of analyzing circulating miRNAs. After target recognition and initial signal amplification by DNAzyme, we observed that release triggered an open hairpin DNA on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), which then promote AuNP aggregation, causing the accumulation of a large number of hotspots in three-dimention. The SERS biosensor achieved a better performance than the sandwich-type separation detection, with a low detection limit (0.37 fM) and a broad linear range (1 fM–10 nM) in liquids. This SERS platform can be used as a powerful tool for the detection of circulating miRNAs, and it can be used to improve the sensitivity and accuracy of various clinical-disease diagnoses.

Energy transfer processes and structure of carboxymethyl cellulose-Tb/Eu nanocomplexes with color-tunable photoluminescence

A series of fluorescent nanocomplexes of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/Terbium (Tb)- Europium (Eu) were successfully synthesized without introducing a second ligand. By adjusting the concentration of the coordinated ions, these nanocomplexes exhibit favorably visibly tunable luminescence properties with colors being able to change from green to red. The XPS analysis demonstrates the formation Tb(III)-O^2- and Eu(III)-O^2- between OH and COO^- in CMC and Tb³⁺ or Eu³⁺ ions, which is advantage for light absorption by UV-Vis spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. The ligand CMC plays a role in coordinating with terbium and europium ions, but also serves as an energy donor to these metal ions by antenna effect. Moreover, the energy transfer also occurred from terbium ions to europium ions in CMC matrix, which is responsible for the tunable luminescence properties of these complexes.

Synthesis of Hydroxylatopillar[6]arene-Controlled Gold Nanoparticles-Cellulose Nanocrystals and Their Applications

In this work, two macrocyclic hosts, named hydroxylatopillar[6]arene and dihydroxylatopillar[6]arene (HP6, 2HP6), are proposed. We found that the reduction of Au³⁺ to Au⁰ can success by using HP6 or 2HP6 as a reductant and stabilizing agent. At the end of HP6/2HP6, hydroxyl (-OH) groups were used as a reductant to reduce Au³⁺ to Au⁰. At the same time, -OH on HP6/2HP6 was oxidized to -COOH, and then the formed -COOH can be used as the stabilizer to prevent the infinite growth of AuNPs. The cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) prepared by a clean and nonpolluting method were used as carriers to load AuNPs on them. The CNCs were applied for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB), and then the MB was catalytically degraded by HP6/2HP6-AuNPs-CNC. Besides, the HP6/2HP6-AuNPs-CNC showed remarkable catalytic performance for reducing nitro to the amino group in 4-nitrophenol. The advantages of clean and green synthesis make the HP6/2HP6-AuNPs-CNC a hybrid material and its application sustainable.

Fabrication and Characterization of Thermal-responsive Biomimetic Small-scale Shape Memory Wood Composites with High Tensile Strength, High Anisotropy

Intelligent responsive materials have become one of the most exciting fields in the research of new materials in the past few decades due to their practical and potential applications in aerospace, biomedicine, textile, electronics, and other relative fields. Here, a novel thermal-responsive biomimetic shape memory wood composite is fabricated utilizing polycaprolactone-based (PCL) shape-memory polymer to modify treated-wood. The shape memory wood inherits visual characteristics and the unique three-dimension structure of natural wood that endows the shape memory wood (SMW) with outstanding tensile strength (10.68 MPa) at room temperature. In terms of shape memory performance, the shape recovery ratio is affected by multiple factors including environment temperature, first figuration angle, cycle times, and shows different variation tendency, respectively. Compared with shape recovery ratio, the shape fixity ratio (96%) is relatively high and stable. This study supplies more possibilities for the functional applications of wood, such as biomimetic architecture, self-healing wood veneering, and intelligent furniture.

Monolithic cellulose supported metal nanoparticles as green flow reactor with high catalytic efficiency

A highly effective, stable and reusable flow microreactor was developed by utilizing the environmentally sustainable porous monolithic cellulose based on a facile temperature induced phase separation (TIPS) method. The obtained microreator could be applied to efficiently and continuously catalysing the reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol (an important reaction in water treatment) without any post-treatment or regeneration of catalysts. Moreover, the monolith overcame the brittleness of the crystalline cellulose and showed a good mechanical resilience, suggesting a great potential for the practical application in severe environment. Compared with previous reported Pd supported catalytic systems, this microreactor exhibited extremely high catalytic efficiency (turnover frequency, TOF = 4660 h^-1, almost 4 times higher than that of cellulose nanocrystals supported catalyst) and long-term stability. This work provided a new strategy to construct highly effective and reusable metal NPs involved catalytic system by utilizing biodegradable cellulose materials.

Potentiation of in Vivo Anticancer Efficacy of Selenium Nanoparticles by Mushroom Polysaccharides Surface Decoration

Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) are recently emerging as promising anticancer agents because of their high bioavailability, low toxicity and remarkable anticancer activities. However, the effects of surface physicochemical properties on the biological actions remain elusive. Herein we decorated SeNPs with various water-soluble polysaccharides extracted from various mushrooms, to compare physical characteristics and anticancer profile of these SeNPs. The results showed that the prepared spherical SeNPs displayed particle sizes at 91-102 nm, and kept stable in aqueous solution for up to 13 weeks. However, different decoration altered the tumor selectivity of the SeNPs, while gastric adenocarcinoma AGS cells showed relative highest sensitivity. Moreover, PTR-SeNPs demonstrated potent in vivo antitumor, by inducing caspases- and mitochondria-mediated apoptosis, but showed no obvious toxicity to nomal organs. Taken together, this study offers insights into how surface decoration can tune the cancer selectivity of SeNPs and provides a basis for engineering particles with increased anticancer efficacy.

SERS-active carboxymethyl cellulose-based gold nanoparticles: high-stability in hypersaline solution and selective response in the Hofmeister series

Passively Q-switched mid-infrared laser pulse generation with gold nanospheres as a saturable absorber

High-quality gold (Au) nanospheres (Au-NPs) with a diameter of 52 nm were prepared by the seeded growth method. The mid-infrared (MIR) nonlinear saturable absorption properties were measured by a balanced twin-detector measurement technique. With the as-prepared Au-NPs saturable absorber (SA), an efficient passively Q-switched laser was realized at 2.95 μm for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Under an absorbed pump power of 4.0 W, a maximum output power of 268 mW was obtained with the shortest pulse width of 734 ns and repetition rate of 91 kHz, corresponding to the pulse energy up to 2.95 μJ. The results indicate that Au-NPs are promising candidates as SAs for MIR laser pulse generation.

Production and characterization of cellulose acetate - titanium dioxide nanotubes membrane fraxiparinized through polydopamine for clinical applications

The present paper introduces a study on the preparation and characterization of cellulose acetate - TiO₂ nanotubes membrane. In order to be used as a hemodialysis membrane, fraxiparinized nanotubes have been incorporated into the cellulose matrix. Fraxiparine embedding was performed via strong binding ability of dopamine. Composite membrane was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and water contact angle measurement. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was used to correlate the morphology of composite membrane with its electrochemical properties. Mott-Schottky test proved titanium dioxide semiconductor incorporation in composite membrane. Permeation test was made to determine pure water flux. The obtained results showed that addition of nanotubes had a positive impact on membrane permeation compared with a control polymeric membrane.

Self-Assembled Exopolysaccharide Nanoparticles for Bioremediation and Green Synthesis of Noble Metal Nanoparticles

Continuing efforts have been made to explore novel exopolysaccharides (EPSs) for valuable applications. In this research, we report for the first time that a novel non-glucan EPS named EPS-605 can self-assemble to form spherical nanosize particles of ∼88 nm in diameter, expanding both the range of EPS type and structural type that EPSs self-assemble into. Characterization of EPS-605 shows that it is composed of mannose, glucose, and galactose with several modifications including acylation, phosphorylation, sulfation, and carboxylation, and a highly negative charge. EPS-605 showed a record biosorption capability for Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, and methylene blue as compared to that of other reported EPSs, biosorbents, and nanosorbents. The adsorption ability of EPS-605 is affected by pH, temperature, the initial adsorbate concentration, the contact time, and the presence of background electrolytes. The mechanism of EPS-605 adsorbing heavy metals seems to be different to that for dyes. Moreover, EPS-605 can serve as the reductant in the synthesis of Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) and AgNPs enabling good monodispersity within the shortest time (of 30 min) compared to that from other EPSs and without any extra pretreatment. Our research advances the development of novel EPSs and provides a new, eco-friendly, and renewable platform for both the bioremediation and green synthesis of nanomaterials.

Multimodal Sensing Strategy Using pH Dependent Fluorescence Switchable System

Biomolecules assisted preparation of fluorescent gold nanoparticles (FL-Au NPs) has been reported in this work using glucose oxidase enzyme as both reducing and stabilizing agent and demonstrated their application through multimodal sensing strategy for selective detection of cysteine (Cys). Three different methods namely fluorescence turn OFF-ON strategy, naked eye detection and electrochemical methods are used for Cys detection by employing FL-Au NPs as a common probe. In case of fluorescence turn-OFF method a strong interaction between Au NPs and thiol results in quenching of fluorescence due to replacement of glucose oxidase by Cys at neutral pH. Second mode is based on fluorescence switch-ON strategy where initial fluorescence is significantly quenched by either excess acid or base and further addition of Cys results in appearance of rosy-red and green fluorescence respectively. Visual colour change and fluorescence emission arises due to etching of Au atoms on the surface by thiol leading to formation of Au nanoclusters. Finally, electrochemical sensing of Cys is also carried out using cyclic voltammetry in 0.1 M PBS solution. These findings provide a suitable platform for Cys detection over a wide range of pH and concentration levels and hence the sensitivity can also be tuned accordingly.

Chiral Imidazolium-Functionalized Au Nanoparticles: Reversible Aggregation and Molecular Recognition

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) stabilized by imidazolium salts derived from amino acids [glycine (1), rac-alanine (2), l-phenylalanine (3), and rac-methionine (4)] were prepared. The AuNPs were stabilized the most by 4, which kept the particles dispersed in water for months at pH > 5.5. These AuNPs exhibited a well-defined absorption band at 517 nm and had an average particle size of 11.21 ± 0.07 nm. The 4-AuNPs were reversibly aggregated by controlling the pH of the solution. Chiral R,R-4-AuNPs and S,S-4-AuNPs were synthesized, and the chiral environment on the nanoparticle surface was confirmed using circular dichroism; these nanoparticles exhibited a molecular recognition of chiral substrates. Furthermore, they showed potential for separating racemic mixtures when supported on a layered double hydroxide.

Functional Application of Noble Metal Nanoparticles In Situ Synthesized on Ramie Fibers

Different functions were imparted to ramie fibers through treatment with noble metal nanoparticles including silver and gold nanoparticles. The in situ synthesis of silver and gold nanoparticles was achieved by heating in the presence of ramie fibers in the corresponding solutions of precursors. The unique optical property of synthesized noble metal nanoparticles, i.e., localized surface plasmon resonance, endowed ramie fibers with bright colors. Color strength (K/S) of fibers increased with heating temperature. Silver nanoparticles were obtained in alkaline solution, while acidic condition was conducive to gold nanoparticles. The optical properties of treated ramie fibers were investigated using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to observe the morphologies of silver and gold nanoparticles in situ synthesized on fibers. The ramie fibers treated with noble metal nanoparticles showed remarkable catalytic activity for reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) by sodium borohydride. Moreover, the silver nanoparticle treatment showed significant antibacterial property on ramie fibers.

Bacterial Cellulose Supported Gold Nanoparticles with Excellent Catalytic Properties

Amidoxime surface functionalized bacterial cellulose (AOBC) has been successfully prepared by a simple two-step method without obviously changing the morphology of bacterial cellulose. AOBC has been used as the reducing agent and carrier for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) that distributed homogeneously on bacterial cellulose surface. Higher content in amidoxime groups in AOBC is beneficial for the synthesis of AuNPs with smaller and more uniform size. The AuNPs/AOBC nanohybrids have excellent catalytic activity for reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) by using NaBH4. It was found that catalytic activity of AuNPs/AOBC first increases with increasing NaBH4 concentration and temperature, and then leveled off at NaBH4 concentration above 238 mM and temperature above 50 °C. Moreover, AuNPs with smaller size have higher catalytic activity. The highest apparent turnover frequency of AuNPs/AOBC is 1190 h(-1). The high catalytic activity is due to the high affinity of 4-NP with AuNPs/AOBC and the reduced product 4-aminophenol has good solubility in water in the presence of AuNPs/AOBC. The catalytic stability of the AuNPs/AOBC was estimated by filling a fluid column contained AuNPs/AOBC and used for continuously catalysis of the reduction of 4-NP by using NaBH4. The column works well without detection of 4-NP in the eluent after running for more than two months, and it is still running. This work provides an excellent catalyst based on bacterial cellulose stabilized AuNPs and has promising applications in industry.

pH-Responsive assembly of metal nanoparticles and fluorescent dyes by diblock copolymer micelles

Hybrid assemblies consisting of metal nanoparticles (NPs) and fluorophores are quite interesting because the intrinsic properties of fluorophores can be engineered in the assembled structure. In this regard, we utilized the self-segregation properties of block copolymer micelles to organize metal NPs and fluorophores simultaneously in a specific arrangement. From the viewpoint of assembly methods, we first encapsulated Au NPs in the PS cores of polystyrene-block-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-PAA) micelles. Then, positively charged fluorescent dyes of rhodamine 123 (R123) were bound to the negatively charged PAA coronas by electrostatic interactions. Since carboxylic acid in the PAA block is a weak acid, the degree of R123 binding to PS-PAA micelles can be adjusted by varying the pH of the solution. Therefore, by changing the pH, we were able to control the assembly and disassembly of R123 molecules to PS-PAA micelles and the corresponding change in the fluorescence signal.

A gold nanoparticle-based colorimetric probe for rapid detection of 1-hydroxypyrene in urine

Direct and rapid detection of 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) is of great importance owing to its high carcinogenicity, teratogenicity and toxicity.

General synthesis of noble metal (Au, Ag, Pd, Pt) nanocrystal modified MoS2 nanosheets and the enhanced catalytic activity of Pd-MoS2 for methanol oxidation

A general and facile method for water-dispersed noble metal (Au, Ag, Pd, Pt) nanocrystal modified MoS2 nanosheets (NM-MoS2 NSs) has been developed. By using sodium carboxymethyl cellulose as a stabilizer, well-dispersed NM-MoS2 NSs with homogeneously deposited noble metal nanocrystals (NM NCs) can be synthesized in aqueous solutions. Due to the transition from the semiconducting 2H phase to the metallic 1T phase, the chemically exfoliated MoS2 (ce-MoS2) NSs have improved electrochemical activity. The partially metallic nature of the ce-MoS2 NSs and the catalytic activity of the NM NCs synergistically make NM-MoS2 NSs a potential electrochemical catalyst. For the first time, Pd-MoS2 NSs were used as an electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation in alkaline media. The results showed that Pd-MoS2 NSs have enhanced catalytic activity with 2.8-fold anodic peak current mass density compared to a commercial Pd/C catalyst, suggesting potential for application in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs).

Insights into biogenic and chemical production of inorganic nanomaterials and nanostructures

The synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials and nanostructures by the means of diverse physical, chemical, and biological principles has been developed in recent decades. The nanoscale materials and structures creation continue to be an active area of researches due to the exciting properties of the resulting nanomaterials and their innovative applications. Despite physical and chemical approaches which have been used for a long time to produce nanomaterials, biological resources as green candidates that can replace old production methods have been focused in recent years to generate various inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) or other nanoscale structures. Cost-effective, eco-friendly, energy efficient, and nontoxic produced nanomaterials using diverse biological entities have been received increasing attention in the last two decades in contrast to physical and chemical methods owe using toxic solvents, generate unwanted by-products, and high energy consumption which restrict the popularity of these ways employed in nanometric science and engineering. In this review, the biosynthesis of gold, silver, gold-silver alloy, magnetic, semiconductor nanocrystals, silica, zirconia, titania, palladium, bismuth, selenium, antimony sulfide, and platinum NPs, using bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi, yeasts, plant extracts and also informational bio-macromolecules including proteins, polypeptides, DNA, and RNA have been reported extensively to mention the current status of the biological inorganic nanomaterial production. "Smart" Materials Based on Cellulose: A Review of the Preparations, Properties, and Applications

Cellulose is the most abundant biomass material in nature, and possesses some promising properties, such as mechanical robustness, hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Thus, cellulose has been widely applied in many fields. "Smart" materials based on cellulose have great advantages-especially their intelligent behaviors in reaction to environmental stimuli-and they can be applied to many circumstances, especially as biomaterials. This review aims to present the developments of "smart" materials based on cellulose in the last decade, including the preparations, properties, and applications of these materials. The preparations of "smart" materials based on cellulose by chemical modifications and physical incorporating/blending were reviewed. The responsiveness to pH, temperature, light, electricity, magnetic fields, and mechanical forces, etc. of these "smart" materials in their different forms such as copolymers, nanoparticles, gels, and membranes were also reviewed, and the applications as drug delivery systems, hydrogels, electronic active papers, sensors, shape memory materials and smart membranes, etc. were also described in this review.

Denaturation-resistant bifunctional colloidal superstructures assembled via the proteinaceous barnase-barstar interface

To date, a number of biomolecule-mediated nanoparticle self-assembly systems have been developed that are amenable to controllable disassembly under relatively gentle conditions. However, for some applications such as design of self-assembled multifunctional theragnostic agents, high stability of the assembled structures can be of primary importance. Here, we report extraordinarily high durability of protein-assisted nanoparticle self-assembly systems yielding bifunctional colloidal superstructures resistant to extreme denaturing conditions intolerable for most proteins (e.g., high concentrations of chaotropic agents, high temperature). Among the tested systems (barnase-barstar (BBS), streptavidin-biotin, antibody-antigen, and protein A-immunoglobulin), the BBS is notable due to the combination of its high resistance to severe chemical perturbation and unique advantages offered by genetic engineering of this entirely protein-based system. Comparison of the self-assembly systems shows that whereas in all cases the preassembled structures proved essentially resistant to extreme conditions, the ability of the complementary biomolecular pairs to mediate assembly of the initial biomolecule-particle conjugates differs substantially in these conditions.

Totally Ecofriendly Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles from Aqueous Dissolutions of Polysaccharides

In this contribution, a totally ecofriendly synthesis of silver nanoparticles from aqueous dissolution of polysaccharides is reported. The synthesis of nanoparticles was performed using aqueous dissolutions of silver nitrate (AgNO3) and carboxymethyl-cellulose (CMC) as both reducing and stabilization agent and using different AgNO3 : CMC weight ratios. Resultant yellowish to reddish dispersions were characterized by means of transmission electron microscopy and their related techniques, such as bright field and Z-contrast imaging and electron diffraction, as well as ultraviolet-visible and infrared spectroscopic techniques. The experimental evidence suggests that the morphology and particle size distribution of the silver nanoparticles depend on the AgNO3 : CMC weight ratio. This feature seems to be related to the stabilization given by the CMC matrix, which, according to our experimental findings, is steric in nature. Regarding such experimental evidence, a synthesis mechanism in which CMC acts as stabilizer and reducing agent is proposed.

Light-activated covalent formation of gold nanoparticle-graphene and gold nanoparticle-glass composites

Monolayer protected gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) modified with a 3-aryl-3-(trifluoromethyl)diazirine functionality at its terminus (Diaz-AuNPs, 3.9 nm) were prepared and irradiated in the presence of two very different substrates, reduced graphene and glass. Upon irradiation, the terminal diazirine group loses nitrogen to generate a reactive carbene at the interface of the AuNPs that can then undergo addition or insertion reactions with functional groups on the graphene or glass surfaces, leading to the formation of graphene-AuNP and glass-AuNP hybrids, respectively. The AuNP hybrids were characterized using TEM, XRD, XPS, AFM, and UV-vis spectroscopy. Control experiments done in the absence of irradiation demonstrate that carbene activation is required for incorporation of significant AuNP onto the materials. The AuNP hybrids are robust and stable to excessive washing and centrifugation supporting the covalent nature of the interaction between the AuNP and the graphene or silicate glass substrates. Because the formation of the composite is light activated, it lends itself to photopatterning; this application is demonstrated for making the glass-AuNP composites.

Reversible controlled assembly of thermosensitive polymer-coated gold nanoparticles

Aggregation of thermosensitive polymer-coated gold nanoparticles was performed in aqueous solution in the presence of a triblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(propylene oxide)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (Pluronic P123, PEO(20)-PPO(68)-PEO(20)). The gold nanoparticles, AuNPs, which are covered by thermosensitive statistical copolymers poly(EO(x)-st-PO(y)), aggregate when the temperature is higher than the phase transition temperature of the polymer, leading to a macroscopic precipitation. The presence of Pluronic chains in solution prevents the uncontrolled aggregation of the AuNPs at higher temperature than both the aggregation temperature of the AuNPs (T(agg)) and the critical micellization temperature (cmt) of the Pluronic. The size, the colloidal stability, and the optical properties of the AuNPs aggregates are modulated as a function of the P123-to-AuNP ratio, which constitutes the critical parameter of the system. Moreover, the AuNP aggregation is totally reversible upon decreasing the temperature below T(agg). Our approach constitutes an easy way to the formation of well-controlled nanoparticle aggregates with well-defined sizes. The resulting aggregates have been characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and electron microscopy.
