Synthesis of Porous Polydimethylsiloxane Gold Nanoparticles Composites by a Single Step Laser Ablation Process

Typically, polymeric composites containing nanoparticles are realized by incorporating pre-made nanoparticles into a polymer matrix by using blending solvent or by the reduction of metal salt dispersed in the polymeric matrix. Generally, the production of pre-made Au NPs occurs in liquids with two-step processes: producing the gold nanoparticles first and then adding them to the liquid polymer. A reproducible method to synthetize Au nanoparticles (NPs) into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) without any external reducing or stabilizing agent is a challenge. In this paper, a single-step method is proposed to synthetize nanoparticles (NPs) and at the same time to realize reproducible porous and bulk composites using laser ablation in liquid. With this single-step process, the gold nanoparticles are therefore produced directly in the liquid polymer. The optical properties of the suspensions of AuNPs in distilled water and in the curing agent have been analyzed by the UV-VIS spectroscopy, employed in the transmission mode, and compared with those of the pure curing agent. The electrical dc conductivity of the porous PDMS/Au NPs nanocomposites has been evaluated by the I–V characteristics. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis have monitored the composition and morphology of the so-obtained composites and the size of the fabricated Au nanoparticles. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been used to determine the roughness of the bulk PDMS and its Au NP composites.

Hierarchical Nanoparticle Assemblies Formed via One-Step Catalytic Stamp Pattern Transfer

The one-step catalytic stamp pattern transfer process is described for producing arrays of hierarchical nanoparticle assemblies. The method simply combines in situ nanoparticle synthesis triggered by free residual Si-H groups on PDMS stamps and the lift-off pattern transfer technique. No additional nanoparticle synthesis procedure is required before the pattern transfer process. Exquisitely uniform and precisely spaced hierarchical nanoparticle assemblies with designed geometry can be rapidly produced using the catalytic stamp pattern transfer process. Sequential catalytic stamp pattern transfer also is described to generate multilayered, hierarchical nanoparticle assemblies with various geometries. The hierarchical nanoparticle assemblies catalytically transferred onto the surface are not just nanoparticles but nanoparticle-polydimethylsiloxane residue composites. The in situ-synthesized nanoparticles retain optical properties. The hierarchical nanoparticle assemblies with precisely controlled geometry further show potential in the application of surface-enhanced Raman scattering. The capability of one-step catalytic stamp pattern transfer allows the scalable and reproducible fabrication of well-defined hierarchical nanoparticle assemblies.

Click synthesis of quaternized poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) functionalized graphene oxide with improved antibacterial and antifouling ability

A quaternized poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) functionalized graphene oxide (GO-QPDMAEMA) was successfully prepared in this study via click chemistry. Alkyne-functionalized graphene oxide (GO-alkyne) was first synthesized through a two-step amidation reaction of GO-COOH. Meanwhile, azide-terminated poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA-N3) was prepared via the atom-transfer radical-polymerization of dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA). Subsequently, PDMAEMA-N3 was grafted onto the GO-alkyne through click chemistry to obtain PDMAEMA modified graphene oxide (GO-PDMAEMA). Finally, the tertiary amino groups of GO-PDMAEMA were quaternized by ethyl bromide to provide a quaternized poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) functionalized graphene oxide (GO-QPDMAEMA). Various characterization techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis spectrometry, ζ potential, Raman, contact angle analyses and field emission scanning electron microscope were used to ascertain the successful preparation of the quaternized GO-QPDMAEMA. Furthermore, antibacterial and antifouling activities of GO-QPDMAEMA were investigated via protein adsorption, as well as bacterial and cell adhesion studies. The results suggest that the GO-QPDMAEMA surface exhibited significant antibacterial and antifouling properties, compared with the GO-COOH and GO-PDMAEMA surfaces.

From 2D to 3D: novel nanostructured scaffolds to investigate signalling in reconstructed neuronal networks

To recreate in vitro 3D neuronal circuits will ultimately increase the relevance of results from cultured to whole-brain networks and will promote enabling technologies for neuro-engineering applications. Here we fabricate novel elastomeric scaffolds able to instruct 3D growth of living primary neurons. Such systems allow investigating the emerging activity, in terms of calcium signals, of small clusters of neurons as a function of the interplay between the 2D or 3D architectures and network dynamics. We report the ability of 3D geometry to improve functional organization and synchronization in small neuronal assemblies. We propose a mathematical modelling of network dynamics that supports such a result. Entrapping carbon nanotubes in the scaffolds remarkably boosted synaptic activity, thus allowing for the first time to exploit nanomaterial/cell interfacing in 3D growth support. Our 3D system represents a simple and reliable construct, able to improve the complexity of current tissue culture models.

Synthesis of polyethylene glycol- and sulfobetaine-conjugated zwitterionic poly(L-lactide) and assay of its antifouling properties

A new antifouling polyester monomethoxy-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (MPEG-PLA-PSBMA) was obtained by ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide, and subsequent click chemistry to graft the azide end-functionalized poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (polySBMA) moieties onto the alkyne end-functionalized MPEG-PLA (MPEG-PLA-alkyne). The chemical structure of the polymer was characterized using (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and its physical properties (including molecular weight, glass transition temperature, and melting point) were determined using gel permeation chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry. To investigate its hydrophilicity and stability, as well as its antifouling properties, the polymer was also prepared as a surface coating on glass substrates. The wettability and stability of this polyester was examined by contact angle measurements. Furthermore, its antifouling properties were investigated via protein adsorption, cell adhesion studies, and bacterial attachment assays. The results suggest that the prepared zwitterionic polyester exhibits durable wettability and stability, as well as significant antifouling properties. The new zwitterionic polyester MPEG-PLA-PSBMA could be developed as a promising antifouling material with extensive biomedical applications.

Generation of alginate gel particles with AuNPs layers by polydimethylsiloxan template

The authors report a feasible and simple microfluidic approach for synthesizing anisotropic gel particles based on template method. By filling arrays of microwells with alginate hydrogel and synthesizing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on the gel surface, anisotropic alginate gel particles with single side gold nanoparticles layers were produced in microwells on the polydimethylsiloxan template. AuNPs and the anisotropic feature were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectrum analyses. The anisotropic particles made of biocompatible gels could be released from the template and collected with uniform sizes, which might have a powerful potential in biological detection and sensing.

Air plasma assisting microcontact deprinting and printing for gold thin film and PDMS patterns

In this paper, we present a simple method to fabricate gold film patterns and PDMS patterns by air plasma assisting microcontact deprinting and printing transfer approaches. Chemical gold plating is employed instead of conventional metal evaporation or sputtering to obtain perfect gold film both on flat and topographic PDMS chips, and complicated SAM precoating is replaced by simple air plasma treatment to activate both the surface of gold film and PDMS. In this way, large area patterns of conductive gold film and PDMS patterns could be easily obtained on the elastomeric PDMS substrate. Both the chemical plating gold film and transferred gold film were of good electrochemical properties and similar hydrophilicity with smooth and conductive surface, which made it potentially useful in microfluidic devices and electronics. The gold transfer mechanism is discussed in detail. For typical applications, a cell patterning chip based on the gold pattern was developed to imply the interfacial property, and dielectrophoresis control of live cells was carried out with the patterned gold as interdigital electrodes to show the conductivity.
