Thermodynamic and Interfacial Properties of Cationic Gemini Surfactant in the Presence of Alcohols

The micellar properties of the cationic Gemini surfactant ethanediyl-1,2-bis(dimethyldodecyl ammonium bromide), C12H25 · (CH3)2N+–(CH2)2–N+(CH3)2C12H25 · 2Br− (12-2-12), with short chain alcohols have been studied by conductivity and surface tension measurements within the temperature range 293.15 K–313.15 K and alcohol percentage. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 12-2-12 solution, degree of ionization (α) and standard Gibbs free energy of micellization (ΔG°m), standard enthalpy of micellization (ΔH°m) were calculated from conductivity and surface tension data. The experimental data show that the CMC values of cationic Gemini surfactants increased with addition of methanol, ethanol and n-propanol. The thermodynamic parameters (ΔG°m), (ΔH°m) and (ΔS°m) of micellization of 12-2-12 in alcohol were also calculated from the temperature dependence of the CMC values. CMC, (α), (ΔH°m) and (ΔS°m) increased linearly with increasing temperature. In the mixture of dimeric cationic surfactant (12-2-12) and alcohol solutions, the CMC values showed a slight increase with increasing alcohol concentration. CMC, maximum surface excess concentration at the solution/air interface, Γmax, minimum area per surfactant molecule, Amin, and the surface pressure at CMC, ¶CMC, values calculated from the surface tension measurements and thermodynamic parameters have been evaluated at same temperatures.

Micelle formation of a non-ionic surfactant in non-aqueous molecular solvents and protic ionic liquids (PILs)

Many ionic liquids and low molecular weight polar solvents have been reported to support amphiphile self-assembly, with most of these reported for the first time in the last decade. This phenomenon is attributed to the solvophobic effect (analogous to the hydrophobic effect in water). However, to date there has been no systematic study which evaluates micelle formation in a large library of non-aqueous solvents. Here we investigate micelle formation of a non-ionic amphiphile, hexa-ethyleneglycol mono n-dodecyl ether, C12E6, in a diverse range of molecular solvents and protic ionic liquids (PILs). Nine of the 19 non-aqueous molecular solvents investigated, and all four of the PILs, were found to support micelle formation. A link was investigated between the solvent cohesive energy density (as estimated using the Gordon parameter) and both the critical micelle concentration and the related free energy of micellization . In addition, the chemical structure and liquid mesostructure of the solvent were found to be important factors in the ability of the solvents to support micelle formation.

Effect of Polymethylene Spacer of Cationic Gemini Surfactants on Solvation Dynamics and Rotational Relaxation of Coumarin 153 in Aqueous Micelles

The present work demonstrates the solvation dynamics and rotational relaxation of Coumarin 153 (C-153) in the micelles of a series of cationic gemini surfactants, 12-s-12, 2Br(-) containing a hydrophobic polymethylene spacer with s = 3, 4, 6, 8, 12. Steady-state and time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) fluorescence spectroscopic techniques have been used to carry out this study. Steady-state and TCSPC fluorescence data suggest that C-153 molecules are located at the Stern layer of micelles. While probe molecules feel more or less the same micropolarity in the micellar phase, the microviscosity of micelles decreases with spacer chain length. Solvation dynamics at the Stern layer is bimodal in nature with fast solvation as a major component. Counter ions and water molecules bonded with the polar headgroups of surfactant molecules are responsible for the slow component. Average solvation time increases with spacer chain length because of the increased degree of counter ion dissociation. Some water molecules are involved in the solvation of counter ions themselves, resulting in the decrease in "free" water molecules to be available for the solvation of C-153. The hydrophobic spacer chain also has an effect on increasing the solvation time with increasing chain length. The average rotational relaxation time for C-153 decreases with spacer chain length with a rapid decrease at s > 4. The anisotropy decay of C-153 in micelles is biexponential in nature. The slow rotational relaxation is due to the lateral diffusion of C-153 in micelles. Lateral diffusion is much faster than the rotational motion of a micelle as a whole. The rotational motion of the micelle as a whole becomes faster with the decreasing size of micelles.

Physicochemical behaviors of cationic gemini surfactant (14-4-14) based microheterogeneous assemblies

A comprehensive study of micellization and microemulsion formation of a cationic gemini surfactant (tetramethylene-1,4-bis(dimethyltetradecylammonium bromide; 14-4-14) in the absence or presence of hydrophobically modified polyelectrolyte, sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC), has been conducted by conductometry, tensiometry, microcalorimetry, and fluorimetry methods at different temperatures. Both critical micelle concentration and degree of ionization of the surfactant have been observed to increase with increasing temperature. The interfacial and thermodynamic parameters were evaluated. The standard Gibbs free energy of micellization (ΔGm°) is negative, which decreases with increase in temperature. Larger entropic contribution is observed compared to the enthalpy. The interaction of 14-4-14 with NaCMC produces coacervates which was determined from turbidimetry method. The pseudoternary phase behavior of the microemulsion systems comprising water (or NaCMC as additive), 14-4-14, isopropanol (IP) or n-butanol (Bu) as cosurfactant, and isopropyl myristate (IPM) were studied at 298 K. Phase diagrams reveal that IP derived microemulsions (in the absence of NaCMC) offer a large isotropic region compared to Bu-derived systems at comparable physicochemical conditions. Increasing the concentration of IP or Bu decreases the isotropic region in the phase diagram. NaCMC influences the microemulsion zone, depending upon its concentration, and type of cosurfactant and surfantant/cosurfactant ratio. Dynamic light scattering and conductometric measurements show the size of the droplet, threshold temperature of percolation, scaling parameters, and activation energy of the percolation process of 14-4-14/IP or Bu derived microemulsion systems without/with NaCMC at various physicochemical conditions. Bu exerts a greater effect to reduce θt than IP as a cosurfactant (in the absence of NaCMC) at comparable ω. On the other hand, IP showed better percolating effect than Bu in the presence of NaCMC. Bu and IP (as cosurfactant) and NaCMC (as additive) influenced the microemulsion droplet size (Dh) to different extents under comparable conditions. Temperature insensitive microemulsions have been reported at the studied temperature range (298–353 K). 14-4-14/IP (1:2)-derived microemulsion showed a fractured surface at fixed ω = 15, where ω is the water and surfactant molar ratio, and temperature (298 K); whereas, large scale mesospheres comprising multiple closely winded nanoslices and spheroid morphology were formed in 14-4-14/IP and 14-4-14/Bu microemulsions, respectively, in the presence of 0.01 g % NaCMC, at comparable conditions. These systems revealed good antimicrobial activity toward the strains of Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis and Gram-negative Escherichia coli bacteria at 298 K, and inhibitory effect was governed by ω, type of cosurfactant, and bacterial strains.

Thermodynamics of host-guest interactions between fullerenes and a buckycatcher

¹H NMR and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) experiments were employed to obtain reliable thermodynamic data for the formation of the 1:1 inclusion complexes of fullerenes C₆₀ and C₇₀ with the buckycatcher (C₆₀H₂₈). NMR measurements were done in toluene-d₈ and chlorobenzene-d₅ at 288, 298, and 308 K, while the ITC titrations were performed in toluene, chlorobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene, anisole, and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane at temperatures from 278 to 323 K. The association constants, K_a, obtained with both techniques are in very good agreement. The thermodynamic data obtained by ITC indicate that generally the host–guest association is enthalpy-driven. Interestingly, the entropy contributions are, with rare exceptions, slightly stabilizing or close to zero. Neither ΔH nor ΔS is constant over the temperature range studied, and these thermodynamic functions exhibit classical enthalpy/entropy compensation. The ΔC_p values calculated from the temperature dependence of the calorimetric ΔH values are negative for the association of both fullerenes with the buckycatcher in toluene. The negative ΔC_p values are consistent with some desolvation of the host-cavity and the guest in the inclusion complexes, C₆₀@C₆₀H₂₈ and C₇₀@C₆₀H₂₈.

Micellization and related behavior of sodium dodecylsulfate in mixed binary solvent media of tetrahydrofuran (Tf) and formamide (Fa) with water: a detailed physicochemical investigation

The detailed aggregation behavior of sodiumdodecyl sulfate (SDS) in tetrahydrofuran (Tf)-water (W) and formamide (Fa)-water (W) media at varied volume percent compositions has been investigated. Surface tension (ST), conductance (Cond), viscosity (Visc), isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) were used in this study. The presence of nonaqueous solvents affected the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of SDS, the counter-ion binding of the micelle, the energetics of the air/water interfacial adsorption and micellization of the amphiphiles in the bulk, the ion-association (ion-pair, triple-ion, quadruple, etc. between Na(+) and DS(-) ions) as well as the weakly soluble (aggregation less) amphiphile solution. Tf has been observed to produce a "dead zone" or "non-micelle formation zone" in the mixed Tf-W domain of 10-40 vol%. Fa influenced the SDS aggregation up to 70 vol%, at higher proportions (below the Krafft temperature (K(T))), instead of the micelle, "randomly arranged globular assembly" (RAGA) was formed. The correlation of the standard free energy of micellization (ΔG(m)(0)) with different solvent parameters (1) dielectric constant (ε), (2) viscosity (η0), (3) Reichardt parameter (E(T)(30)), (4) Gordon parameter (G), and (5) Hansen-Hildebrand hydrogen bonding parameter (δ(h)) has been attempted. It has been found that δ(h) produced a master correlation between ΔG(m)(0) and δ(h) for different binary mixtures such as Tf-W, Fa-W, Ml-W and Dn-W.

Influence of temperature and organic solvents (isopropanol and 1,4-dioxane) on the micellization of cationic gemini surfactant (14-4-14)

The micellar properties of gemini surfactant, tetramethylene-1,4-bis(dimethyltetradecylammonium bromide) (14-4-14) in binary aqueous mixtures of isopropanol (IP) and 1,4-dioxane (DO) were investigated by tensiometric, conductometric and microcalorimetric methods in the temperature range of 298 to 323 K. The values of both critical micelle concentration (cmc) and degree of dissociation increase with increasing temperature and concentration of cosolvent. The energetics of micellization was determined from the temperature dependence of critical micelle concentration values. The standard Gibbs free energy of micellization (ΔG) was found to be negative and the negative value decreases with both temperature and concentration of cosolvent. The Gibbs free energy of micellization (ΔG) is mainly controlled by tail transfer free energy. The enthalpy of micellization obtained from direct calorimetry, Gibbs-Helmholtz equation and van't Hoff methods are presented and compared. Entropic contribution is found to be larger than the enthalpy and for all the systems, an enthalpy-entropy compensation phenomenon was obtained. Some interfacial parameters, e.g., Gibbs surface excess (Γmax), minimum area per surfactant molecule (Amin), surface pressure (Πcmc) were been calculated. The fluorimetric technique was used to understand the microenvironment of the solution under the influence of cosolvent. The micellar aggregation number of 14-4-14 in a binary mixed solvent was also determined from fluorimetry using pyrene as a probe. Two fluorophores, fluorescein and curcumin delivered the information of the peripheral region of the micellar interface and palisade region. The self-diffusion coefficients of the micellar media were evaluated using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) method. Such multi-technique investigation provides a new look into the role of solvation in micellization.
