Abstract
Reusing or recycling waste into new useful materials is essential for environmental protection. Herein, we used discarded polystyrene (PS) and fly-ash (FA) particles and a fabricated fly-ash incorporated polystyrene fiber (FA/PS fiber) composite. The electrospinning process produced continuous PS fibers with a good distribution of FA particles. The prepared nanofibers were characterized by state-of-the-art techniques. The performances of the composite nanofibers were tested for fire-retardant applications. We observed that the incorporation of FA particles into the PS fibers led to an improvement in the performance of the composite as compared to the pristine PS fibers. This study showed an important strategy in using waste materials to produce functional nanofibers through an economical procedure. We believe that the strategy presented in this paper can be extended to other waste materials for obtaining nanofiber membranes for various environmental applications.

Abstract
In this study, the influence of the plastisphere on metals accumulation and weathering processes of polystyrene (PSMPs) and nylon microplastics (NyMPs) in polluted waters during a 129 day-assay were studied. MPs were characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transformed infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, contact angle, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Also Cr, Mn, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu in the plastisphere on MPs were analyzed during the assay. Potentially pathogenic Vibrio, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas spp. were abundant in both MPs. Ascomycota fungi (Phona s.l., Alternaria sp., Penicillium sp., and Cladosporium sp.), and yeast, were also identified. NyMPs and PSMPs exhibited a decrease in the contact angle and increased their weights. SEM/EDX showed weathering signs, like surface cracks and pits, and leaching TiO2 pigments from NyMPs after 42 days. XRD displayed a notorious decrease in NyMPs crystallinity, which could alter its interaction with external contaminants. Heavy metal accumulation on the plastisphere formed on each type of MPs increased over the exposure time. After 129 days of immersion, metals concentrations in the plastisphere on MPs were in the following order Cr ˃ Mn ˃ Zn ˃ Cu ˃ Pb ˃ Cd, demonstrating how the biofilm facilitates metal mobilization. The results of this study lead to a better understanding of the impact of marine plastic debris as vectors of pathogens and heavy metals in coastal environments.

Abstract
AbstractA key challenge in producing superhydrophobic coatings (SHC) is to tailor the surface morphology on the micro-nanometer scale. In this work, a feasible and straightforward route was employed to manufacture polystyrene/nickel oxide (PSN) nanocomposite superhydrophobic coatings on aluminum alloys to mitigate their corrosion in a saline environment. Different techniques were employed to explore the influence of the addition of NiO nanoparticles to the as-prepared coatings. PSN-2 composite with ~ 4.3 wt% of NiO exhibited the highest water contact angle (WCA) of 155° ± 2 and contact angle hysteresis (CAH) of 5°.

Abstract
Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) is a versatile and convenient method to investigate the higher order structure of molecular assembly systems. However, the more complicated a system of interest, the more difficult the interpretation in the SANS profile. In order to increase the reliability of structural analysis on a complicated system, it is desirable to obtain different kinds of structural information from the same sample simultaneously. Polarized infrared spectroscopy is able to provide information about the molecular structure, concentration, and orientation of each chemical species in a system. In order to utilize these advantages of polarized infrared spectroscopy, a simultaneous measurement system was built by incorporating a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer into a time-of-flight small angle neutron scattering instrument covering a wide Q range. Using this system, simultaneous measurements of wide- and small-angle neutron scattering and polarized FTIR spectroscopy was realized for the first time.

Abstract
The crystal structure transition of syndiotactic polystyrene film from the helical conformation to the more stable planar zigzag conformation during a heating process was studied using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy in combination with two-dimensional (2D) correlation analysis and perturbation-correlation moving-window 2D analysis. The sequence of different conformations during the transition was investigated by analyzing two-dimensional FT-IR correlation spectra in the spectral ranges of 800-700 cm(-1) and 600-500 cm(-1). It was observed that the conformation of delta helical changes prior to gamma helical, and the gamma helical phase is faster than the alpha' planar zigzag phase. By utilizing the 2D asynchronous correlation spectra, the 744 cm(-1) band, which is usually incorporated in the broad 750 cm(-1) band, can now be uniquely attributed as the alpha' zigzag configuration for the first time. Furthermore, by employing thermal perturbation, the shorter helical segments consisting of m = 7-12 and m = 12-20 monomeric units were disturbed in a shorter time than the longer helical segments m = 20-30 during the heating process.
