Abstract
Molecular weight strongly influences the molecular dynamics and rheological responses of nanocomposites, which is far from being well understood. Herein molecular dynamics and rheological behaviors of hydrophilic fumed silica filled unentangled polypropylene glycol (PPG) were investigated as a function of weight averaged molecular weight (M w) of PPG and volume fraction (∅) of silica. It is shown that M w does not affect the glassy layers surrounding the nanoparticles and the segmental dynamics of the mobile PPG phase. On the other hand, the mobile PPG phase in the highly filled nanocomposites exhibits an abnormal "more fragile" to "stronger" transition with increasing M w. The reinforcement and thinning behaviors are stronger in lower-M w nanocomposites with the "more fragile" mobile PPG phase. The results suggest that reinforcement of nanocomposites affects the dynamic fragility of the mobile phase of the matrix.

Abstract
Plasticizers are usually added to polymers to give them the desired flexibility and processability by changing the dynamical properties of the polymer chains. It is therefore important to give a quantitative description about how the dynamic behavior of a given polymer is modified by the incorporation of a second component. We analyze in this work, by means of dielectric spectroscopy, the dynamics of poly(vinyl acetate)/diethyl phthalate mixtures, at different concentrations, over a broad range of frequency, pressure, and temperature. The dynamics of these particular mixtures show only one main relaxation process contrarily to what is observed in athermal miscible polymer mixtures. From the dielectric spectra the maximum relaxation time as a function of pressure and temperature was obtained and analyzed. We studied the pressure dependence of the glass transition temperature as well as the fragility of both the neat components and the mixtures at different concentrations (on the rich polymer range). Finally, the experimental data were rationalized within the framework of an Adam-Gibbs (AG) based approach recently developed [G. A. Schwartz et al., J. Chem. Phys. 127, 154907 (2007)]. The model, originally developed for athermal blends, is here modified to take into account the non-negligible interaction between polymer and plasticizer. We found that the temperature-pressure dependence of the alpha-relaxation time is very well described by this AG extended model.

Abstract
In this paper, we have addressed the question of the dynamic miscibility in a blend characterized by very different glass-transition temperatures, Tg, for the components: poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PEO/PMMA). The combination of quasielastic neutron scattering with isotopic labeling and fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations has allowed us to selectively investigate the dynamics of the two components in the picosecond-10 nanoseconds scale at temperatures close and above the Tg of the blend. The main focus was on the PEO component, i.e., that of the lowest Tg, but first we have characterized the dynamics of the other component in the blend and of the pure PEO homopolymer as reference. In the region investigated, the dynamics of PMMA in the blend is strongly affected by the alpha-methyl rotation; an additional process detected in the experimental window 65 K above the blend-Tg can be identified as the merged alphabeta process of this component that shows strong deviations from Gaussian behavior. On the other hand, pure PEO displays entropy driven dynamics up to very large momentum transfers. Such kind of motion seems to freeze when the PEO chains are in the blend. There, we have directly observed a very heterogeneous and moreover confined dynamics for the PEO component. The presence of the hardly moving PMMA matrix leads to the creation of little pockets of mobility where PEO can move. The characteristic size of such confined islands of mobility might be estimated to be of approximately 1 nm. These findings are corroborated by the simulation study, which has been an essential support and guide in our data analysis procedure.

Abstract
Processes on different length scales affect the dynamics of chain molecules. The friction experienced by a short chain segment depends on both small-scale chain properties and on the local environment of the segment. As a consequence, the (monomeric) friction coefficients of the two components of a binary polymer blend will, in general, differ from each other and from the friction coefficients of the corresponding melts. In this work, we investigate local friction in polyolefin blends with the aid of a small-scale simulation approach. The polymer chains, in united atom representation, are assumed to occupy the sites of a partially filled simple cubic lattice. The simulation focuses on short chain sections with straight backbones and enumerates all possible binary contacts and relative movements of such sections. By evaluating the exact enumeration results in conjunction with equations of state for the blends, we are able to make predictions about the variation of the friction coefficients with local chain architecture and thermodynamic state (temperature, pressure, and composition). We calculate relative values of friction coefficients at temperatures well above the glass transition for blends of PEP, an alternating copolymer of polyethylene and polypropylene, with polyethylene and polyisobutylene and for blends of polyethylene and atactic polypropylene. We also investigate a blend of PEP with head-to-head polypropylene and compare our results with experimental data.
