Melt Morphology of Polystyrene−Poly(ethylene oxide) Metallo-Supramolecular Diblock Copolymer

Modulating Microphase Separation of Lamellae-Forming Diblock Copolymers via Ionic Junctions

We present a molecular dynamics simulation study investigating the phase behavior of lamellae-forming diblock copolymers with a single ionic junction on the backbone. Our results show qualitative agreement with experimental findings regarding enhanced microphase separation with the introduction of an ionic junction at the conjunction point, while further revealing nonmonotonic changes in domain spacing and order-disorder transition as a function of the electrostatic interaction strength. This highlights the dominant roles of entropic and binding effects of counterions under weak and strong ionic correlations, respectively. The location of the ionic junction is found to effectively modulate the charge distribution and chain conformation in the ordered domains; its presence in the middle of a block promotes folding of the block, leading to a smaller domain size. These findings demonstrate the interplay of ionic coupling with steric hindrance and chain end effects, which enhances our understanding of the delicate control over the microphase domain features.

Quasielastic neutron scattering study of microscopic dynamics in polybutadiene reinforced with an unsaturated carboxylate

We studied the dynamics of zinc diacrylate (ZDA) reinforced polybutadiene rubber (BR) (ZDA/BR) using the quasielastic neutron scattering technique to determine the effect of concentration of ZDA on polymer dynamics. First, we evaluated the temperature dependence of mean square displacements (〈u²〉) for ZDA/BR with different ZDA volume fractions. 〈u²〉 increased with temperature below 170 K, and we observed no significant ZDA volume fraction dependence. However, it increased more steeply above 170 K, and the value of 〈u²〉 was smaller for the samples with increasing ZDA fraction. To elucidate the origin of the decrease in 〈u²〉 with increasing ZDA content, dynamic scattering laws (S(Q,ω)) were analyzed. An increase in the elastic component, an increase in the mean relaxation time, and a broadening of distribution of relaxation time were observed with the increasing volume fraction of ZDA. In addition, the ZDA volume fraction dependence of the elastic component roughly corresponded to that of elastic modulus, indicating that the elastic component is related to its mechanical strength. Referring to the previously reported static structure of the present ZDA/BR system, a model for the heterogeneous BR dynamics was proposed. This model assumes the coexistence of immobile, mobile, and interfacial constrained mobile regions. It was found to be appropriate for the explanation of the observed dynamics. We proposed that a network-like structure of the BR having a high crosslinking density around ZDA aggregates is mainly responsible for the high elastic modulus of ZDA/BR.

Synthesis and characterization of metallo-supramolecular polymers

The incorporation of metal centers into the backbone of polymers has led to the development of a broad range of organometallic and coordination compounds featuring properties that are relevant for potential applications in diverse areas of research, ranging from energy storage/conversion to bioactive or self-healing materials. In this review, the basic concepts and synthetic strategies leading to these types of materials as well as the scope of available characterization techniques will be summarized and discussed.

An asymmetric A-B-A' metallo-supramolecular triblock copolymer linked by Ni(2+)-bis-terpyridine complexes at one junction

A metallo-supramolecular triblock copolymer polystyrene-b-polyisoprene-[Ni(2+)]-polystyrene (SI-[Ni(2+)]-S') has been efficiently prepared using a one-pot, two-step procedure, where the blocks are held by bis-terpyridine complexes at the junction of SI-S'. This specific metallo-supramolecular chemistry is demonstrated to be a robust approach to potentially broaden the diversity of block copolymers. The location of the metal-ligand complexes has a profound influence on the phase separation of the triblock copolymer in the bulk, which results in a distinctive phase segregation between the end blocks and leads to an unexpected asymmetry of the triblock copolymer. The metal-ligand complexes are found to be preferentially located on the adjacent spherical domain and form a core-shell structure. The resulting multiphase material exhibits distinct elastomeric properties with significant toughness and creep recovery behavior. This type of triblock copolymer is anticipated to be a novel class of hybrid thermo-plastic elastomeric material with wide tunability and functionality.

Supramolecular motifs in dynamic covalent PEG-hemiaminal organogels

Dynamic covalent materials are stable materials that possess reversible behaviour triggered by stimuli such as light, redox conditions or temperature; whereas supramolecular crosslinks depend on the equilibrium constant and relative concentrations of crosslinks as a function of temperature. The combination of these two reversible chemistries can allow access to materials with unique properties. Here, we show that this combination of dynamic covalent and supramolecular chemistry can be used to prepare organogels comprising distinct networks. Two materials containing hemiaminal crosslink junctions were synthesized; one material is comprised of dynamic covalent junctions and the other contains hydrogen-bonding bis-hemiaminal moieties. Under specific network synthesis conditions, these materials exhibited self-healing behaviour. This work reports on both the molecular-level detail of hemiaminal crosslink junction formation as well as the macroscopic behaviour of hemiaminal dynamic covalent network (HDCN) elastomeric organogels. These materials have potential applications as elastomeric components in printable materials, cargo carriers and adhesives.

Controlling the melt rheology of linear entangled metallo-supramolecular polymers

We study in the melt the linear viscoelastic properties of supramolecular assemblies obtained by adding different amounts of nickel ions to linear entangled poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) building blocks end-functionalized by a terpyridine group. We first show that the elasticity of these supramolecular assemblies is mainly governed by the entanglement dynamics of the building blocks, while the supramolecular interactions delay or suppress their relaxation. By adjusting the amount of metal ions, the relaxation time as well as the level of the low-frequency plateau of these supramolecular assemblies can be controlled. In particular, the addition of metal ions above the 1:2 metal ion/terpyridine stoichiometric ratio allows secondary supramolecular interactions to appear, which are able to link the linear supramolecular assemblies and thus, lead to the reversible gelation of the system. By comparing the rheological behavior of different linear PEO samples, bearing or not functionalized chain-ends, we show that these extra supramolecular bonds are partially due to the association between the excess of metal ions and the oxygen atoms of the PEO chains. We also investigate the possible role played by the terpyridine groups in the formation of these secondary supramolecular interactions.

Autonomous viscosity oscillation via metallo-supramolecular terpyridine chemistry of branched poly(ethylene glycol) driven by the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction

Herein, we report an autonomous viscosity oscillation of polymer solutions coupled with the metal-ligand association/dissociation between Ru and terpyridine (tpy), driven by the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. The tpy ligand for the Ru catalyst was attached to the terminals of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with different numbers of branches (linear-, tetra-, and octa-PEG). It is well known that mono-tpy coordination is stable when Ru is oxidized (Ru(tpy)(3+)), whereas bis-tpy coordination is stable when the Ru centre is reduced (Ru(tpy)2(2+)). In the oxidized state, the three different polymers existed as solutions. In contrast, when the Ru centre was reduced, gels were obtained for the tetra- and octa-PEG owing to the formation of a three-dimensional polymer network through Ru-tpy coordination. Rheological measurements confirmed that the sol-gel transition occurred much more quickly in the octa-PEG system than in the tetra-PEG system, because of the requirement of fewer crosslinking points. The polymer solutions exhibited self-oscillation of absorbance and viscosity when BZ substrates were added to the solutions of Ru(2+)-tpy-modified tetra-/octa-PEG. This indicated that the Ru(tpy)2(2+) attached to the polymer ends could work as a metal catalyst for the BZ reaction. By increasing the number of branches from 4 to 8, the amount of crosslinking changed more remarkably during the oscillation, with a maximum value closer to that necessary for gelation. Thus, viscosity oscillation with a larger amplitude in the region of higher viscosity was achieved by using octa-PEG.

Recent aspects of self-oscillating polymeric materials: designing self-oscillating polymers coupled with supramolecular chemistry and ionic liquid science

Herein, we summarise the recent developments in self-oscillating polymeric materials based on the concepts of supramolecular chemistry, where aggregates of molecular building blocks with non-covalent bonds evolve the temporal or spatiotemporal structure.

Block copolymer libraries: modular versatility of the macromolecular Lego® system

The synthesis and characterization of a new 4 x 4 library of block copolymers based on polystyrene and poly(ethylene oxide) connected by an asymmetrical octahedral bis(terpyridine) ruthenium complex at the block junction are described, while initial studies on the thin film morphology of the components of the library are presented by the use of Atomic Force Microscopy, demonstrating the impact of a library approach to derive structure-property relationships.
