Self-Organization, Structure, Dynamic Properties, and Surface Morphology of Silica/Epoxy Films As Seen by Solid-State NMR, SAXS, and AFM

Hybrid Sol-Gel Matrices Doped with Colorimetric/Fluorimetric Imidazole Derivatives

Organic-inorganic hybrids (OIH) are materials that can be easily synthesized by the sol-gel method and combine the advantages of organic and inorganic moieties within a single polymeric matrix. Imidazole derivatives are versatile organic compounds that can change their optical properties with the variation of pH due to the protonation or deprotonation of the nitrogen atoms. This work reports the preparation of different OIHs doped with different contents of two imidazole compounds (3a,b). The obtained materials were characterized structurally by FTIR, and the dielectric properties were studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The optical properties were studied by UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies. The FTIR analysis showed that the presence of the imidazole does not change the structural properties of the matrices. The normalized resistance values obtained for the doped matrices ranged between 8.57 and 9.32 Ω cm2, all being higher than the undoped matrix. The σ ranged between 9.49 and 10.28 S cm-1, being all higher than the pure OIH samples. Compound 3a showed a maximum absorption peak at 390 nm, which is present in the OIH spectra, proving the presence of the compound. In the case of compound 3b, a maximum absorption wavelength at 412 nm was found, and the compound peak was not clear, which may indicate that an interaction between the compound and the matrix occurred. A synergetic effect between the intrinsic emission of the matrix and the fluorescence of 3a is found on the OIH-doped matrices.

Organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel materials doped with a fluorescent triarylimidazole derivative

The development of sensors for pH monitoring is of extreme importance in the monitoring of concrete and reinforced concrete structures. Imidazole derivatives are promising probes for pH sensing due to the amphoteric nature of their heterocyclic ring, which can be protonated/deprotonated upon pH changes. In this work, a triarylimidazole was synthesised and used as a dopant in an organic–inorganic hybrid (OIH) sol–gel matrix to obtain a pH-sensitive membrane for further application in optical fibre sensors (OFS). The triarylimidazole probe shows fluorimetric response in pH between 9 and 13, which is the desired range for monitoring carbonation of concrete. This degradation process lowers the highly alkaline pH of concrete (12.5–13) to values below 9, which creates favourable conditions for corrosion of concrete reinforcement. The OIH membranes used were based on Jeffamine THF170 and 3-glycidoxypropytrimethoxysilane precursors, which had already been shown to be suitable and resistant in contact with cement-based materials. The OIHs were doped with three different contents of the triarylimidazole and the structural, dielectric, thermal and optical properties of the pure and doped OIH materials were evaluated. The structural analysis showed that the presence of the triarylimidazole did not change the structural properties of the OIH material. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed that in the doped samples the conductivity increased with the imidazole concentration. The ε_r obtained for the doped samples ranged approximately from 11 to 19 and for the pure matrices was 8. Thermal analysis showed that these materials are stable up to 350 °C and that the presence of the probe did not change that feature. The optical properties showed that the prepared OIH materials have promising properties to be used as pH sensitive fluorimetric probes.

OIH sol–gel materials based on Jeffamine THF-170 and GPTMS, doped with triarylimidazole, were synthesized. The ε_r obtained for the OIH doped samples ranged between 11 and 19. The OIHs are thermally stable for fresh concrete purposes.

Foldable and Extremely Scratch-Resistant Hard Coating Materials from Molecular Necklace-like Cross-Linkers

A flexible hard coating material displaying extreme scratch resistance and foldable flexibility was developed via the design of an organic-inorganic hybrid coating material employing an alkoxysilyl-functionalized polyrotaxane cross-linker (PRX_Si1). PRX_Si1 has a molecular necklace-like structure that can form organic-inorganic cross-linking points and provide large molecular movements. It was postulated that the scratch resistance and flexibility could be simultaneously increased because of the hybrid cross-linking points and dynamic molecular movements. To confirm this hypothesis, the crystalline structure and mechanical properties of the PRX_Si1-based hard coating material were analyzed via transmission electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray diffraction, tensile, pencil hardness, and scratch tests. Finally, the PRX_Si1-based hard coating material could form homogeneously dispersed nanoscale siloxane crystalline domains, and the strain at the break point was 3 times higher than that of a commercial hard coating material, resulting in no defect formation even after 5000 folding test runs. Moreover, the material displayed extremely high pencil hardness (9H) and scratch resistance.

Fabrication of Biocompatible, Functional, and Transparent Hybrid Films Based on Silk Fibroin and Epoxy Silane for Biophotonics

In this work we explored the fabrication of flexible and transparent hybrids of silk fibroin (SF) and epoxy-modified siloxane for photonic applications. It is well-known that regenerated SF solutions can form free-standing films with high transparency. Although SF has a restricted number of chemically reactive side groups, the main issues of as-cast pristine SF films regard the high solubility into aqueous media, brittleness, and low thermal stability. The design of SF films with enhanced functionality but high transparency triggers new opportunities on a broader range of applications in biophotonics. Here we present a simple, functional, yet remarkably versatile hybrid material derived from silica sol-gel process based on SF protein and (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTMS), an organically modified silicon-alkoxide owning a reactive terminal epoxy group. Specifically, we investigated the effect of the addition of GPTMS into SF solutions on the processability, morphology, crystallinity, and mechanical and optical properties of the resulting hybrid films. Highly transparent (ca. 90%) and flexible free-standing hybrid films were achieved. Cell viability assays revealed that the hybrid films are noncytotoxic to rat osteoblast cells even at high GPTMS content (up to 70 wt %). The hybrid films showed enhanced thermal stability and were rich in organic (epoxy) and inorganic (silanol) functional groups according to the content of GPTMS. We also evaluated the successful preparation of high-quality optical red emissive SF hybrid films by loading YVO₄:Eu³⁺ nanoparticles at low concentration (<5 wt %). A meaningful description of the hybrid film structure is reported from the combination of scanning electron and atomic force microscopies, vibrational spectroscopy, solid-state NMR, and X-ray diffraction analyses.

Combined small angle X-ray solution scattering with atomic force microscopy for characterizing radiation damage on biological macromolecules

BACKGROUND

Synchrotron radiation facilities are pillars of modern structural biology. Small-Angle X-ray scattering performed at synchrotron sources is often used to characterize the shape of biological macromolecules. A major challenge with high-energy X-ray beam on such macromolecules is the perturbation of sample due to radiation damage.

RESULTS

By employing atomic force microscopy, another common technique to determine the shape of biological macromolecules when deposited on flat substrates, we present a protocol to evaluate and characterize consequences of radiation damage. It requires the acquisition of images of irradiated samples at the single molecule level in a timely manner while using minimal amounts of protein. The protocol has been tested on two different molecular systems: a large globular tetremeric enzyme (β-Amylase) and a rod-shape plant virus (tobacco mosaic virus). Radiation damage on the globular enzyme leads to an apparent increase in molecular sizes whereas the effect on the long virus is a breakage into smaller pieces resulting in a decrease of the average long-axis radius.

CONCLUSIONS

These results show that radiation damage can appear in different forms and strongly support the need to check the effect of radiation damage at synchrotron sources using the presented protocol.

Interface Induced Growth and Transformation of Polymer-Conjugated Proto-Crystalline Phases in Aluminosilicate Hybrids: A Multiple-Quantum (23)Na-(23)Na MAS NMR Correlation Spectroscopy Study

Nanostructured materials typically offer enhanced physicochemical properties because of their large interfacial area. In this contribution, we present a comprehensive structural characterization of aluminosilicate hybrids with polymer-conjugated nanosized zeolites specifically grown at the organic-inorganic interface. The inorganic amorphous Al-O-Si framework is formed by alkali-activated low-temperature transformation of metakaoline, whereas simultaneous copolymerization of organic comonomers creates a secondary epoxide network covalently bound to the aluminosilicate matrix. This secondary epoxide phase not only enhances the mechanical integrity of the resulting hybrids but also introduces additional binding sites accessible for compensating negative charge on the aluminosilicate framework. This way, the polymer network initiates growth and subsequent transformation of protocrystalline short-range ordered zeolite domains that are located at the organic-inorganic interface. By applying an experimental approach based on 2D (23)Na-(23)Na double-quantum (DQ) MAS NMR spectroscopy, we discovered multiple sodium binding sites in these protocrystalline domains, in which immobilized Na(+) ions form pairs or small clusters. It is further demonstrated that these sites, the local geometry of which allows for the pairing of sodium ions, are preferentially occupied by Pb(2+) ions during the ion exchange. The proposed synthesis protocol thus allows for the preparation of a novel type of geopolymer hybrids with polymer-conjugated zeolite phases suitable for capturing and storage of metal cations. The demonstrated (23)Na-(23)Na DQ MAS NMR combined with DFT calculations represents a suitable approach for understanding the role of Na(+) ions in aluminositicate solids and related inorganic-organic hybrids, particularly their specific arrangement and clustering at interfacial areas.

Multi-nuclear liquid state NMR investigation of the effects of pH and addition of polyethyleneglycol on the long-term hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethoxysilane

The long-time behavior of the hydrolysis and condensation reaction of the tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) pre-solution at different pH values with and without addition of polyethyleneglycol (PEG) for various aging times was characterized by liquid (1)H, (13)C, and (29)Si NMR spectroscopy. After aging, the alcohol is released in the TEOS pre-solution without addition of PEG at pH 3 and 9. On the other hand, the hydrolysis and condensation rates of the TEOS pre-solutions with addition of PEG at pH 3 and 9 increase except for the TEOS pre-solution with addition of PEG 2000 at pH 9. However, the hydrolysis and condensation rates of the TEOS pre-solutions with and without addition of PEG at pH 5 and 7 are almost the same before and after aging. The effects of the pH values, polymer size and aging times on the hydrolysis and condensation reaction of the TEOS pre-solutions are discussed.

29Si NMR in solid state with CPMG acquisition under MAS

A remarkable enhancement of sensitivity can be often achieved in 29Si solid-state NMR by applying the well-known Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) train of rotor-synchronized pi pulses during the detection of silicon magnetization. Here, several one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) techniques are used to demonstrate the capabilities of this approach. Examples include 1D 29Si{X} CPMAS spectra and 2D 29Si{X} HETCOR spectra of mesoporous silicas, zeolites and minerals, where X=1H or 27Al. Data processing methods, experimental strategies and sensitivity limits are discussed and illustrated by experiments. The mechanisms of transverse dephasing of 29Si nuclei in solids are analyzed. Fast magic angle spinning, at rates between 25 and 40 kHz, is instrumental in achieving the highest sensitivity gain in some of these experiments. In the case of 29Si-29Si double-quantum techniques, CPMG detection can be exploited to measure homonuclear J-couplings.

Advanced solid state NMR techniques for the characterization of sol-gel-derived materials

A large array of advanced solid state NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) techniques is presented in the frame of the structural characterization of sol-gel-derived materials. These techniques include the pertinent detection of (17)O chemical shifts, MAS (magic angle spinning) J spectroscopy in the solid state, high-resolution (1)H spectroscopy, heteronuclear and homonuclear D (dipolar)-derived multidimensional correlation experiments, and first-principles calculations of NMR parameters. This spectroscopic approach is suitable for the in-depth description of multicomponent sol-gel derivatives, crystalline and amorphous biocompatible silicophosphates, Al-O-P clusters, and templated porous materials. It offers unique perspectives for the description of the hybrid interfaces in terms of chemical and spatial connectivities.

Studies of Organically Functionalized Mesoporous Silicas Using Heteronuclear Solid-State Correlation NMR Spectroscopy under Fast Magic Angle Spinning

Highly resolved solid-state HETCOR NMR spectra between protons and low gamma nuclei ((13)C and (29)Si) can be suitably obtained on surfaces using a "brute force" (1)H-(1)H decoupling by MAS at rates > or =40 kHz. Despite a small rotor volume (<10 microL), a (1)H-(13)C HETCOR spectrum of allyl groups (AL, -CH(2)-CH=CH(2)) covalently anchored to the surface of MCM-41 silica was acquired without using isotope enrichment. The advantages of using fast MAS in such studies include easy setup, robustness, and the opportunity of using low RF power for decoupling. In the case of the (1)H-(29)Si HETCOR experiment, the sensitivity can be dramatically increased, in some samples by more than 1 order of magnitude, through implementing into the pulse sequence a Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill train of pi pulses at the (29)Si spin frequency. The use of low-power heteronuclear decoupling is essential in the (1)H-(29)Si CPMG-HETCOR experiment, due to unusually long acquisition periods. These methods provided detailed structural characterization of the surface of AL-MCM mesoporous silica.
