Local Structure of Syndiotactic Poly(methyl methacrylate). A Combined Study by Neutron Diffraction with Polarization Analysis and Atomistic Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Strategies for the Development of Conjugated Polymer Molecular Dynamics Force Fields Validated with Neutron and X-ray Scattering

Conjugated polymers (CPs) enable a wide range of lightweight, lower cost, and flexible organic electronic devices, but a thorough understanding of relationships between molecular structure and dynamics and electronic performance is critical for improved device efficiencies and for new technologies. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations offer in silico insight into this relationship, but their accuracy relies on the approach used to develop the model's parameters or force field (FF). In this Perspective, we first review current FFs for CPs and find that most of the models implement an arduous reparameterization of inter-ring torsion potentials and partial charges of classical FFs. However, there are few FFs outside of simple CP molecules, e.g., polythiophenes, that have been developed over the last two decades. There is also limited reparameterization of other parameters, such as nonbonded Lennard-Jones interactions, which we find to be directly influenced by conjugation in these materials. We further provide a discussion on experimental validation of MD FFs, with emphasis on neutron and X-ray scattering. We define multiple ways in which various scattering methods can be directly compared to results of MD simulations, providing a powerful experimental validation metric of local structure and dynamics at relevant length and time scales to charge transport mechanisms in CPs. Finally, we offer a perspective on the use of neutron scattering with machine learning to enable high-throughput parametrization of accurate and experimentally validated CP FFs enabled not only by the ongoing advancements in computational chemistry, data science, and high-performance computing but also using oligomers as proxies for longer polymer chains during FF development.

Acrylic Paints: An Atomistic View of Polymer Structure and Effects of Environmental Pollutants

Most of the artwork and cultural heritage objects are stored in museums under conditions that are difficult to monitor. While advanced technologies aim to control and prevent the degradation of cultural heritage objects in line with preventive conservation measures, there is much to be learned in terms of the physical processes that lead to the degradation of the synthetic polymers that form the basis of acrylic paints largely used in contemporary art. In museums, stored objects are often exposed to temperature and relative humidity fluctuations as well as airborne pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The glass transition of acrylic paints is below room temperature; while low temperatures may cause cracking, at high temperatures the sticky surface of the paint becomes vulnerable to pollutants. Here we develop fully atomistic models to understand the structure of two types of acrylic copolymers and their interactions with VOCs and water. The structure and properties of acrylic copolymers are slighlty modified by incorporation of a monomer with a longer side chain. With favorable solvation free energies, once absorbed, VOCs and water interact with the polymer side chains to form hydrogen bonds. The cagelike structure of the polymers prevents the VOCs and water to diffuse freely below the glass transition temperature. In addition, our model forms the foundation for developing mesoscopic and continuum models that will allow us to access longer time and length scales to further our understanding of the degradation of artwork.

Breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation in supercooled water: the jump-diffusion perspective

Although water is the most ubiquitous liquid it shows many thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies. Some of the anomalies further intensify in the supercooled regime. While many experimental and theoretical studies have focused on the thermodynamic anomalies of supercooled water, fewer studies explored the dynamical anomalies very extensively. This is due to the intricacy of the experimental measurement of the dynamical properties of supercooled water. Violation of the Stokes-Einstein relation (SER), an important relation connecting the diffusion of particles with the viscosity of the medium, is one of the major dynamical anomalies. In absence of experimentally measured viscosity, researchers used to check the validity of SER indirectly using average translational relaxation time or α-relaxation time. Very recently, the viscosity of supercooled water was accurately measured at a wide range of temperatures and pressures. This allowed direct verification of the SER at different temperature-pressure thermodynamic state points. An increasing breakdown of the SER was observed with decreasing temperature. Increasing pressure reduces the extent of breakdown. Although some well-known theories explained the above breakdown, a detailed molecular mechanism was still elusive. Recently, a translational jump-diffusion (TJD) approach has been able to quantitatively explain the breakdown of the SER in pure supercooled water and an aqueous solution of methanol. The objective of this article is to present a detailed and state-of-the-art analysis of the past and present works on the breakdown of SER in supercooled water with a specific focus on the new TJD approach for explaining the breakdown of the SER.

Insight into the Structure and Dynamics of Polymers by Neutron Scattering Combined with Atomistic Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Combining neutron scattering and fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations allows unraveling structural and dynamical features of polymer melts at different length scales, mainly in the intermolecular and monomeric range. Here we present the methodology developed by us and the results of its application during the last years in a variety of polymers. This methodology is based on two pillars: (i) both techniques cover approximately the same length and time scales and (ii) the classical van Hove formalism allows easily calculating the magnitudes measured by neutron scattering from the simulated atomic trajectories. By direct comparison with experimental results, the simulated cell is validated. Thereafter, the information of the simulations can be exploited, calculating magnitudes that are experimentally inaccessible or extending the parameters range beyond the experimental capabilities. We show how detailed microscopic insight on structural features and dynamical processes of various kinds has been gained in polymeric systems with different degrees of complexity, and how intriguing questions as the collective behavior at intermediate length scales have been faced.

The Use of Scattering Data in the Study of the Molecular Organisation of Polymers in the Non-Crystalline State

Scattering data for polymers in the non-crystalline state, i.e., the glassy state or the molten state, may appear to contain little information. In this work, we review recent developments in the use of scattering data to evaluate in a quantitative manner the molecular organization of such polymer systems. The focus is on the local structure of chain segments, on the details of the chain conformation and on the imprint the inherent chemical connectivity has on this structure. We show the value of tightly coupling the scattering data to atomistic-level computer models. We show how quantitative information about the details of the chain conformation can be obtained directly using a model built from definitions of relatively few parameters. We show how scattering data may be supplemented with data from specific deuteration sites and used to obtain information hidden in the data. Finally, we show how we can exploit the reverse Monte Carlo approach to use the data to drive the convergence of the scattering calculated from a 3d atomistic-level model with the experimental data. We highlight the importance of the quality of the scattering data and the value in using broad Q scattering data obtained using neutrons. We illustrate these various methods with results drawn from a diverse range of polymers.

Structure and dynamics of stereo-regular poly(methyl-methacrylate) melts through atomistic molecular dynamics simulations

Poly(methyl-methacrylate), PMMA, is a disubstituted vinyl polymer whose properties depend significantly on its tacticity. Here we present a detailed study of the structure, conformation, and dynamics of syndiotactic, atactic, and isotactic PMMA melts at various temperatures (580, 550, 520, and 490 K) via all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. The calculated volumetric properties are close to experimental data. The T_g and chain dimensions of PMMA model systems are found to depend strongly on tacticity in agreement with experimental findings. The backbone bonds in trans (t), diads in tt, and inter-diads in t|t torsional states are the most populated for all PMMA stereo-chemistries and their fractions increase with the number of syndiotactic sequences. Also, the effective torsional barrier heights for the backbone, ester side group, and α-methyl group are larger for syndiotactic PMMA compared to the isotactic one. The structure of the PMMA chains is studied by computing the intra- and inter-chain static structure factors, S(q), and the radial pair distribution functions. In the first peak of S(q), both intra- and inter-chain components contribute, whereas the second and third peaks mainly come from inter- and intra-chain parts, respectively. For all PMMA stereo-isomers a clear tendency of ester-methyl groups to aggregate is observed. The local dynamics are studied by analyzing torsional autocorrelation functions for various dihedral angles. A wide spectrum of correlation times and different activation energies are observed for the motions of different parts of PMMA chains. The stereo-chemistry affects the backbone, ester side group, and α-methyl motions, whereas the ester-methyl rotation remains unaffected. The dynamic heterogeneity of the PMMA chains is also studied in detail for the different stereo-chemistries via the temperature dependence of the stretching exponent. Furthermore, the reorientational dynamics at the chain level and translational dynamics for monomer and chain centers-of-mass are analyzed.

Phase behavior of side-chain liquid-crystalline polymers containing biphenyl mesogens with different spacer lengths synthesized via miniemulsion polymerization

High molar mass SCLCPs were synthesized by miniemulsion polymerization, and the phase behavior of the polymers was investigated by a combination of DSC, PLM, SAXS and WAXS.

The structure of liquid water by polarized neutron diffraction and reverse Monte Carlo modelling

The coherent static structure factor of water has been investigated by polarized neutron diffraction. Polarization analysis allows us to separate the huge incoherent scattering background from hydrogen and to obtain high quality data of the coherent scattering from four different mixtures of liquid H(2)O and D(2)O. The information obtained by the variation of the scattering contrast confines the configurational space of water and is used by the reverse Monte Carlo technique to model the total structure factors. Structural characteristics have been calculated directly from the resulting sets of particle coordinates. Consistency with existing partial pair correlation functions, derived without the application of polarized neutrons, was checked by incorporating them into our reverse Monte Carlo calculations. We also performed Monte Carlo simulations of a hard sphere system, which provides an accurate estimate of the information content of the measured data. It is shown that the present combination of polarized neutron scattering and reverse Monte Carlo structural modelling is a promising approach towards a detailed understanding of the microscopic structure of water.

Phenylene ring dynamics in phenoxy and the effect of intramolecular linkages on the dynamics of some engineering thermoplastics below the glass transition temperature

We have investigated the dynamics of phenylene rings in the engineering thermoplastic bisphenol-A poly(hydroxyether) -- phenoxy -- below its glass transition temperature by means of neutron scattering techniques. A relatively wide dynamic range has been covered thanks to the combination of two different types of neutron spectrometers, time of flight and backscattering. Partially deuterated samples have been used in order to isolate the phenylene ring dynamics. The resulting neutron scattering signal of phenoxy has been described by a model that considers pi flips and oscillation motions for phenylene rings. The associated time scales are broadly distributed with mean activation energies equal to 0.41 and 0.21eV , respectively. Finally, a comparative study with the literature shows that the dielectric and mechanical gamma relaxation in phenoxy exhibit good correlation with the characteristic times of the aliphatic chain published elsewhere and with the characteristic times observed for the motion of phenylene rings by neutron scattering. These findings are discussed in a more general framework that considers, in addition, previous results on other polymers, which also contain the bisphenol-A unit.
