Three l-phenylalanine- or d-glucose-decorated phenylene–thiophene oligomers have been studied using UV-Vis and ECD spectroscopies in different conditions of solution aggregation and thin films, investigating the impact of chirality on their aggregation modes.

Chiroptical Properties in Thin Films of π-Conjugated Systems

Chiral π-conjugated molecules provide new materials with outstanding features for current and perspective applications, especially in the field of optoelectronic devices. In thin films, processes such as charge conduction, light absorption, and emission are governed not only by the structure of the individual molecules but also by their supramolecular structures and intermolecular interactions to a large extent. Electronic circular dichroism, ECD, and its emission counterpart, circularly polarized luminescence, CPL, provide tools for studying aggregated states and the key properties to be sought for designing innovative devices. In this review, we shall present a comprehensive coverage of chiroptical properties measured on thin films of organic π-conjugated molecules. In the first part, we shall discuss some general concepts of ECD, CPL, and other chiroptical spectroscopies, with a focus on their applications to thin film samples. In the following, we will overview the existing literature on chiral π-conjugated systems whose thin films have been characterized by ECD and/or CPL, as well other chiroptical spectroscopies. Special emphasis will be put on systems with large dissymmetry factors (g_abs and g_lum) and on the application of ECD and CPL to derive structural information on aggregated states.

A simple dimeric model accounts for the vibronic ECD spectra of chiral polythiophenes in their aggregated states

Aggregates of chiral polythiophenes (PTs) show exciton-coupled electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra with a unique vibronic structure, which can be reproduced by quantum dynamical simulations on the coupled states of small dimeric models.

Oligo(phenylene ethynylene) glucosides: modulation of cellular uptake capacity preserving light ON

A new family of oligo(phenylene ethynylene) (OPE) glucosides has been prepared and characterized. Our results demonstrate that fine-tuning of their photophysical properties can be obtained by acting on the electronics of the core and molecular skeleton. Modulation of the hydrophobic chain length and substituents on the central moieties influences the bioaffinity too. In particular, introducing a NMe2 group on the aromatic central core affords a highly efficient biocompatible fluorescent probe that can be taken up in cytoplasmic vesicles of HEp-2 cells (cells from epidermoid carcinoma larynx tissue). The photophysical behavior, high quantum yield, and stability open the way to the use of the OPE family as stains for cellular imaging analysis by fluorescence microscopy.

Self-organizing carbohydrate-oligothiophene-hybrids for eukaryotic membrane-labelling

Self-assembling d-(+) and l-(−) mannose-functionalized oligothiophene hybrids were synthesized via Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction. The hybrids are taken up into live myeloid cells and offer an ideal platform for imaging of artificial and cellular membranes.

Synthesis of novel chiral l-leucine grafted PEDOT derivatives with excellent electrochromic performances

PEDOT–Boc–Leu and PEDOT–Leu exhibit excellent electrochromic performance, and are promising optoelectronic materials.

Chiroptical and emissive properties of a calix[4]arene-containing chiral poly(p-phenylene ethynylene) with enantioselective recognition ability

Through a combination of intrachain and interchain effects, supramolecular chirality is achieved in solution aggregates and thin films of P1. Enantiodiscrimination is observed between (R) and (S) amine antipodes.

An aryleneethynylene fluorophore for cell membrane staining

The use of an amphiphilic aryleneethynylene fluorophore as a plasma membrane marker in fixed and living mammalian cells and liposome model systems is demonstrated. We show here that the optical properties of the novel dye are almost independent on pH, in the range 5.0-8.0. Spectroscopic characterization performed on unilamellar liposomes ascertained that the fluorescence intensity of the aryleneethynylene fluorophore greatly increases after incorporation in lipidic membranes. Experiments performed on different mammalian cells demonstrated that the novel membrane marker exhibits fast staining and a good photostability that make it a suitable tool for live cell imaging. Importantly, the aryleneethynylene fluorophore was also shown to be a fast and reliable blue membrane marker in classical multicolor immunofluorescence experiments. This study adds new important findings to the recent exploitation of the wide class of aryleneethynylene molecules as luminescent markers for biological investigations.

Absolute structural elucidation of natural products--a focus on quantum-mechanical calculations of solid-state CD spectra

In this review article we examine state-of-the-art techniques for the structural elucidation of organic compounds isolated from natural sources. In particular, we focus on the determination of absolute configuration (AC), perhaps the most challenging but inevitable step in the whole process, especially when newly isolated compounds are screened for biological activity. Among the many methods employed for AC assignment that we review, special attention is paid to electronic circular dichroism (CD) and to the modern tools available for quantum-mechanics CD predictions, including TDDFT. In this context, we stress that conformational flexibility often poses a limit to practical CD calculations of solution CD spectra. Many crystalline natural products suitable for X-ray analysis do not contain heavy atoms for a confidential AC assignment by resonant scattering. However, their CD spectra can be recorded in the solid state, for example with the KCl pellet technique, and analyzed possibly by nonempirical means to provide stereochemical information. In particular, solid-state CD spectra can be compared with those calculated with TDDFT or other high-level methods, using the X-ray geometry as input. The solid-state CD/TDDFT approach, described in detail, represents a quick and reliable tool for AC assignment of natural products.

A sensitivity-enhanced field-effect chiral sensor

Organic thin-film transistor sensors have been recently attracting the attention of the plastic electronics community for their potential exploitation in novel sensing platforms. Specificity and sensitivity are however still open issues: in this respect chiral discrimination-being a scientific and technological achievement in itself--is indeed one of the most challenging sensor bench-tests. So far, conducting-polymer solid-state chiral detection has been carried out at part-per-thousand concentration levels. Here, a novel chiral bilayer organic thin-film transistor gas sensor--comprising an outermost layer with built-in enantioselective properties-is demonstrated to show field-effect amplified sensitivity that enables differential detection of optical isomers in the tens-of-parts-per-million concentration range. The ad-hoc-designed organic semiconductor endowed with chiral side groups, the bilayer structure and the thin-film transistor transducer provide a significant step forward in the development of a high-performance and versatile sensing platform compatible with flexible organic electronic technologies.

Synthesis of substituted conjugated polymers: Tuning properties by functionalization

The review addresses features of special interest concerning two classes of functionalized semiconducting polymers: poly(aryleneethynylene)s (PAEs) bearing biomolecules as chiral nonracemic pendant groups and poly(phenylenevinylene)s (PPVs), which are fluorinated in various positions of the repeating units. Molecular design and choice of specific substituents, synthetic protocols, and the effect of functionalization on properties of the polymers both in solution and in the solid state are discussed.
