Metal-Free, Regioselective Diyne Polycyclotrimerization: Synthesis, Photoluminescence, Solvatochromism, and Two-Photon Absorption of a Triphenylamine-Containing Hyperbranched Poly(aroylarylene)

An overview of the synthetic strategies of C3-symmetric polymeric materials containing benzene and triazine cores and their biomedical applications

C3-symmetric star-shaped materials are an emerging category of porous organic polymers with distinctive properties such as permanent porosity, good thermal and chemical stability, high surface area, and appropriate functionalization that promote outstanding potential in various applications. This review is mostly about constructing benzene or s-triazine rings as the center of C3-symmetric molecules and using side-arm reactions to add functions to these molecules. Over and above this, the performance of various polymerization processes has been additionally investigated in detail, including the trimerization of alkynes or aromatic nitriles, polycondensation of monomers with specific functional groups, and cross-coupling building blocks with benzene or triazine cores. Finally, the most recent progress in biomedical applications for C3-symmetric materials based on benzene or s-triazine have been summarized.

Donor moieties with D-π-a framing modulated electronic and nonlinear optical properties for non-fullerene-based chromophores

Herein, a series of non-fullerene-based substantial chromophores (FHD1-FHD6) with a D-π-A framework was designed from a synthesized non-fullerene compound (FH) via structural tailoring with various donor moieties. The FH and its designed derivatives were optimized with frequency analysis at the M06/6-311G (d,p) level to confirm their true minima on potential energy surfaces. These optimized geometries were utilized to perform further analyses, such as absorption, natural bonding orbital (NBO), frontier molecular orbital (FMO), and nonlinear orbital (NLO) analyses at the aforesaid level. Quantum chemical study revealed that all the designed chromophores exhibited a lower band gap than that of the parent molecule with the exception of FHD3. Furthermore, density of states (DOS) analysis supported the findings from the FMO study, and this agreement revealed that the efficient charge was transferred from the HOMO to the LUMO. The NBO investigations disclosed that all the compounds comprised donor moieties with positive charges and acceptors having negative charges. Interestingly, π-conjugated linkers were also found with positive charges, showing an effective donating property. These NBO findings explicated that FHD1-FHD6 exhibited an efficient push-pull mechanism. The λ max values of the designed chromophores were observed to be greater than the reference compound. The average polarizability 〈α〉, first hyperpolarizability (β tot), and second hyperpolarizability 〈γ〉 values of FHD2 were found to be 2.170 × 10-22, 3.150 × 10-27, and 4.275 × 10-32 esu, respectively, while all the other derivatives had been reported in the relevant range. Efficient NLO data revealed that FH-based derivatives may contribute significantly toward NLO technology.

Synthesis of Photo, Oxidative, and Reductive Triple-Stimuli-Responsive Block Copolymer Micelles as Nanocarriers for Controlled Release

With the rapid development of nanotechnology, stimuli-responsive nanomaterials have provided an alternative for designing controllable drug delivery systems due to their spatiotemporally controllable properties. The environment of the human body is complex and cancer cells proliferate rapidly; the traditional nanocarriers could not release the loaded drugs sufficiently, and the release level of the drug is not sufficient for the requirement of treatment. Herein, a photoresponsive, glutathione, and reactive oxygen species block copolymer mPEG_2k-ONB-SS-PO-mPEG_2k is prepared by Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition click polymerization. The ο-nitrobenzyl groups, peroxalate ester bonds, disulfide bonds, and triazole units are regularly and repeatedly arranged in hydrophobic blocks. The photo, oxidative, and reductive responsive characteristics of the copolymers in different conditions were investigated by ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometry, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. Nile Red is encapsulated into the core of micelles as a model drug and exhibits the drug release behaviors in various environments. This research provides a way to design potential drug carriers and a promising platform for efficient intracellular drug delivery in cancer therapy.

A Simple Approach to Bioconjugation at Diverse Levels: Metal-Free Click Reactions of Activated Alkynes with Native Groups of Biotargets without Prefunctionalization

The efficient bioconjugation of functional groups/molecules to targeted matrix and bio-related species drives the great development of material science and biomedicine, while the dilemma of metal catalysis, uneasy premodification, and limited reaction efficiency in traditional bioconjugation has restricted the booming development to some extent. Here, we provide a strategy for metal-free click bioconjugation at diverse levels based on activated alkynes. As a proof-of-concept, the abundant native groups including amine, thiol, and hydroxyl groups can directly react with activated alkynes without any modification in the absence of metal catalysis. Through this strategy, high-efficient modification and potential functionalization can be achieved for natural polysaccharide, biocompatible polyethylene glycol (PEG), synthetic polymers, cell penetrating peptide, protein, fast whole-cell mapping, and even quick differentiation and staining of Gram-positive bacteria, etc. Therefore, current metal-free click bioconjugation strategy based on activated alkynes is promising for the development of quick fluorescence labeling and functional modification of many targets and can be widely applied towards the fabrication of complex biomaterials and future in vivo labeling and detection.

Recent advances in alkyne-based click polymerizations

The recent progress in alkyne-based click polymerizations and their application in the preparation of new functional polymers are summarized. The challenges and opportunities in this area are also briefly discussed.

Synthesis, characterization, and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of truxene-cored diphenylamine derivatives

Three star-shaped compounds based on a truxene core (FS11, FS12 and FS13) were prepared. The truxene core is incorporating with asymmetric diphenylamines, including one phenyl of diphenylamine substituted by methoxy group and the other phenyl substituted by tolyl, fluorophenyl and phenylethynyl for FS11, FS12 and FS13, respectively. Their one-photon, two-photon absorption, geometric structures, electrochemical behavior and thermal properties were investigated. The absorption maxima of charge transfer band for FS11, FS12 and FS13 are 375nm, 373nm and 383nm, and the corresponding molar extinction coefficients of FS11, FS12 and FS13 is 79,950M^-1cm^-1, 67,220M^-1cm^-1 and 108,780M^-1cm^-1. The "pull-push" structure promotes charge transfer between asymmetric diphenylamine branches and the truxene core. Their two-photon absorbtion property is measured by two-photon induced fluorescence. The maximum two-photon cross-sections values of FS11, FS12 and FS13 are excited at 750nm, which are 260 GM, 204GM and 367 GM, respectively.

A tetraphenylbenzene (TPB) cored luminophore of TPB-AC with aggregation-enhanced emission characteristics was designed and synthesized. TPB-AC could be potentially applied for the fabrication of high performance organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with blue light emission.

Molecular modeling of two-photon absorption and third-order nonlinearities of polymethine dyes for all-optical switching

Stimulated by a recent experimental report [Hales JM et al. (2010) Science 327:1485-1488], two-photon absorption and third-order optical nonlinearities of selenopyrylium- and bis(dioxaborine)-terminated polymethine dyes (called SE-7C and DOB-9C) used for all-optical switching were investigated theoretically with time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) and response theory as well as visualized real-space analysis. The calculated results for the first hyperpolarizability and second hyperpolarizability demonstrated that the two molecules both have large third-order optical nonlinearities. Using real-space analysis, we were able to visually determine that in the one-photon absorption (OPA) process, the first singlet excited state of SE-7C and DOB-9C is an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) excited state with strong absorption, while the second excited state of these dyes (also termed the "ICT state") shows weak absorption. However, in the two-photon absorption (TPA) process, a larger TPA absorption cross-section was predicted for the second excited state. In this paper, we describe the properties of the S2 excited state, incorporating charge transfer and the transition moment, via real-space analysis, which was very important for understanding the TPA characteristics of the S(2) state.
