Abstract
Chiral π-conjugated molecules provide new materials with outstanding features for current and perspective applications, especially in the field of optoelectronic devices. In thin films, processes such as charge conduction, light absorption, and emission are governed not only by the structure of the individual molecules but also by their supramolecular structures and intermolecular interactions to a large extent. Electronic circular dichroism, ECD, and its emission counterpart, circularly polarized luminescence, CPL, provide tools for studying aggregated states and the key properties to be sought for designing innovative devices. In this review, we shall present a comprehensive coverage of chiroptical properties measured on thin films of organic π-conjugated molecules. In the first part, we shall discuss some general concepts of ECD, CPL, and other chiroptical spectroscopies, with a focus on their applications to thin film samples. In the following, we will overview the existing literature on chiral π-conjugated systems whose thin films have been characterized by ECD and/or CPL, as well other chiroptical spectroscopies. Special emphasis will be put on systems with large dissymmetry factors (gabs and glum) and on the application of ECD and CPL to derive structural information on aggregated states.

Abstract
Anionic lipid amphiphiles with [RuII(bpy)3]2+ complex have been prepared. The metal complexes have been found to form ribbon and tape structures depending on chemical structures of lipid amphiphiles. Especially, the composites showed hypochromic effect and induced circular dichroism in organic media, and flexibly and weakly supramolecular control of morphological and optical properties have been demonstrated.

Abstract
Here, we present the investigations of photo-isomerization behavior and the nonlinear optical properties of azobenzene derivative LB films. The few-layer LB films of AOB-t4 and BNB-t4 exhibit positive nonlinear refraction and two-photon absorption properties as revealed by picosecond Z-scan. The increased conjugation by introducing an oxadiazole group improves the photo-isomerization rate and the nonlinear optical properties, due to a weaker intermolecular interaction and the formation of J-aggregates within AOB-t4 LB film. The third-order susceptibility of cis-AOB-t4 9-layer LB film reaches 1.866 × 10-9 esu and the two-photon absorption coefficient is on the order of 10-8 m/W. Interestingly, the 15-layer AOB-t4 LB film shows negative nonlinear refraction and saturable absorption. Taken together, we have demonstrated the switchable nonlinear optical absorption and refraction properties of AOB-t4 LB film with changing film thickness, which is of significance for nonlinear optics and photonics applications.

Abstract
An insight into the electronic structure of several hafnium(IV), zirconium(IV), and lutetium(III) phthalocyaninoclathrochelates has been discussed on the basis of experimental UV-vis, MCD, electro- and spectroelectrochemical data as well as density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations. On the basis of UV-vis and MCD spectroscopy as well as theoretical predictions, it was concluded that the electronic structure of the phthalocyninoclathrochelates can be described in the first approximation as a superposition of the weakly interacting phthalocyanine and clathrochelate substituents. Spectroelectrochemical data and DFT calculations clearly confirm that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) in all tested complexes is localized on the phthalocyanine ligand. X-ray crystallography on zirconium(IV) and earlier reported hafnium(IV) phthalocyaninoclathrochelate complexes revealed a slightly distorted phthalocyanine conformation with seven-coordinated metal center positioned ∼1 Å above macrocyclic cavity. The geometry of the encapsulated iron(II) ion in the clathrochelate fragment was found to be between trigonal-prismatic and trigonal-antiprismatic.

Abstract
A general assembly approach is developed to construct hierarchically tunable helical superstructures from an achiral porphyrin-incorporated alkoxysilane. The resulting superstructures can be controlled from film, rice, spindle, ribbon, to fiber in morphology and from nonhelical to helical in structure at a multiscale with excellent optoelectronic, electrical, and thermal properties.

Abstract
Interfacial molecular assemblies of eight atypical amphiphilic porphyrins, substituted with hydrophobic or hydrophilic substituents but without long alkyl chains on their molecular skeletons, have been investigated in terms of supramolecular chiralty generation and amplification. It is found that all of the originally organized interfacial molecular assemblies display very weak or undetectable supramolecular chirality. Interestingly, for those porphyrins bearing hydrophilic substituents, it is found that their molecular assemblies display distinct supramolecular chirality when applying a thermal annealing treatment. In contrast, for those bearing hydrophobic substituents, the formed assemblies remain achiral after similar treatment. This investigation suggests that the hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of the substituents of the atypical amphiphilies could affect the occurrence of the interfacial mirror symmetry breaking substantially. It discloses that, although some of the interfacial assemblies are superficially achiral, a thermal annealing treatment could endow them with evident supramolecular chirality.

Abstract
(R)- and (S)-enantiomers of optically active metal free tetrakis[11,12:13,14-di(1',2'-naphtho)-1,4,7,10,15,18-hexaoxacycloeicosa-2,11,13-trieno]-phthalocyanine and their zinc complexes, (R)- and (S)-H(2)Pc (1) and (R)- and (S)-ZnPc (2), were prepared from the tetramerization of corresponding phthalonitriles, (R)- and (S)-2,3-(4',5'-dicyanobenzo)-11,12:13,14-di(1',2'-naphtho)-1,4,7,10,15,18-hexaoxacycloeicosa-2,11,13-triene, in the absence and presence of Zn(OAc)(2).2H(2)O template, respectively, promoted by organic base 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU). Their self-assembly behavior in the absence and presence of 4,4'-bipyridine has been comparatively investigated by electronic absorption and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The metal free phthalocyanine self-assembles into highly ordered fibrous nanostructures (ca. 3 microm length, 70 nm width, and 125 nm helical pitch) with left-handed and right-handed helicity for (R)-1 and (S)-1, respectively, through the hierarchical manner via one-dimensional helices with chirality determined by the optically active binaphthyl side chains. In contrast, self-assembly of the phthalocyaninato zinc analogue leads to the formation of nanoparticles. However, in the presence of 4,4'-bipyridine, additionally formed metal-ligand Zn-N(4,4'-bipyridine) coordination bonds between the nitrogen atoms of additive 4,4'-bipyridine molecule and the zinc center of (R)- and (S)-2 molecules together with pi-pi interaction and chiral discrimination of chiral side chains induce a right-handed and left-handed helical arrangement in a stack of (R)- and (S)-2 molecules, respectively, which further hierarchically packs into highly ordered fibrous nanostructures of average tens of micrometers in length, 30 nm width, and 106 nm helical pitch with the same helicity to the stack, revealing the effect of metal-ligand coordination bonding interaction on the morphology, dimension, handedness, and helical pitch of self-assembled nanostructures.

Abstract
The interfacial diprotonation and assemblies of a free-base achiral porphyrin, 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-21H,23H-porphine, on various acidic subphases were investigated. It has been shown that the compound could be diprotonated in situ on an acidic subphase and can form assemblies. The interfacially organized supramolecular assemblies were transferred onto a solid substrate, and the assemblies showed supramolecular chirality. Interestingly, the supramolecular chirality of the assemblies of the diprotonated species showed a counterion-dependent behavior. For the assemblies fabricated from the aqueous HCl subphases, a strong Cotton effect (CE) could be observed, although the porphyrin itself is achiral. When an aqueous HBr solution was used as the subphase, the assemblies showed a weak CE, whereas no CE could be detected for the assemblies formulated from the HNO3 or HI subphase. Interestingly, when a mixture of HBr and NaCl, or HNO3 and NaCl, was employed as the subphase, the formed assemblies displayed chiral features similar to those fabricated on the HCl subphase, suggesting that the Cl(-) could be preferentially visualized in terms of supramolecular chirality, although the system itself is composed of achiral species. On the basis of the experimental facts and a theoretical calculation, an explanation with regard to the different sizes of the counterions and the distinct binding affinities of the counteranions to the diprotonated porphyrin species has been proposed. Our findings provide new insights into the assembly of the diprotonated porphyrins as well as the interfacially occurring symmetry breaking.

This article describes the synthesis and fabrication of Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films incorporating a chiral azobenzene derivative, namely, ( S)-4- sec-butyloxy-4'-[5''-(methyloxycarbonyl)pentyl-1''-oxy]azobenzene, abbreviated as AZO-C4(S). Appropriate conditions for the fabrication of monolayers of AZO-C4(S) at the air-water interface have been established, and the resulting Langmuir films have been characterized by a combination of surface pressure and surface potential versus area per molecule isotherms, Brewster angle microscopy, and UV-vis reflection spectroscopy. The results indicate the formation of an ordered trilayer at the air-water interface with UV-vis reflection spectroscopy showing a new supramolecular architecture for multilayered films as well as the formation of J aggregates. Films were transferred onto solid substrates, with AFM revealing well-ordered multilayered films without 3D defects. Infrared and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy indicate that the supramolecular architecture may be favored by the formation of H bonds between acid groups in neighboring layers and pi-pi intermolecular interactions. Circular dichroism spectra reveal chiro-optical activity in multilayered LB films.

Abstract
The aggregation and supramolecular chirality of the interfacial assemblies of an achiral phthalcyanine derivative, zinc 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis(octyloxy)-29 H,31 H-phthaloxyanine (ZnPc), were investigated, and a surface pressure dependent behavior was observed. It was found that ZnPc could be spread as a Langmuir film on water surface and transferred onto solid substrates by the horizontal lifting method. The compound formed mixed J- and H-aggregates in the transferred Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. Deconvolution of the broaden Q-band revealed three main components of the spectra, which corresponded to H- and J-aggregates and medium transition aggregates, whose relative contents could be modulated by the surface pressure at which the films were transferred. On the other hand, the transferred LB films composed of these aggregates showed Cotton effects in circular dichroism spectra when the floating film was compressed over a certain surface pressure although the compound itself was achiral. The cooperative arrangement of the macrocylic ring in a helical manner through the interfacial organization was suggested to be responsible for such optical activity in the LB films. A possible explanation based on the cooperative arrangement of the ZnPc building blocks in a helical sense stacking in the aggregates was proposed.
