Novel, Metal-Free, Superacid-Catalyzed “Click” Reactions of Isatins with Linear, Nonactivated, Multiring Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Hydroxyl-functionalized microporous polymer membranes with tunable para position substituent benzaldehydes for gas separation

We report hydroxyl-functionalized microporous polymers with tunable benzaldehyde groups for gas separation membranes. These polymers were synthesized via acid-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts polycondensation. The tunability in d-spacing and fractional free volume of these polymers depends on the para position substituents (-H, -F, -Cl, and -Br) of the benzaldehyde. Specifically, the size and polarity of the para position substituent influence the polymer chain-packing structure. Consequently, the hydroxyl-functionalized microporous polymer membrane with a larger para position substituent in the benzaldehyde group exhibited improved gas permeability. This improvement is due to enhanced gas diffusivity resulting from the inefficient polymer chain-packing structure. Furthermore, these membranes demonstrated enhanced CO2 plasticization resistance, attributable to the rigid, contorted polymer structure and the hydrogen bonding interactions between hydroxyl groups. This study provides insights into the relationship between the polymer chain-packing structure, tunable para position substituents, and molecular transport.

Superelectrophilic Activation of Phosphacoumarins towards Weak Nucleophiles via Brønsted Acid Assisted Brønsted Acid Catalysis

The electrophilic activation of various substrates via double or even triple protonation in superacidic media enables reactions with extremely weak nucleophiles. Despite the significant progress in this area, the utility of organophosphorus compounds as superelectrophiles still remains limited. Additionally, the most common superacids require a special care due to their high toxicity, exceptional corrosiveness and moisture sensitivity. Herein, we report the first successful application of the "Brønsted acid assisted Brønsted acid" concept for the superelectrophilic activation of 2-hydroxybenzo[e][1,2]oxaphosphinine 2-oxides (phosphacoumarins). The pivotal role is attributed to the tendency of the phosphoryl moiety to form hydrogen-bonded complexes, which enables the formation of dicationic species and increases the electrophilicity of the phosphacoumarin. This unmasks the reactivity of phosphacoumarins towards non-activated aromatics, while requiring only relatively non-benign trifluoroacetic acid as the reaction medium.

Separators and Membranes for Advanced Alkaline Water Electrolysis

Traditionally, alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) uses diaphragms to separate anode and cathode and is operated with 5-7 M KOH feed solutions. The ban of asbestos diaphragms led to the development of polymeric diaphragms, which are now the state of the art material. A promising alternative is the ion solvating membrane. Recent developments show that high conductivities can also be obtained in 1 M KOH. A third technology is based on anion exchange membranes (AEM); because these systems use 0-1 M KOH feed solutions to balance the trade-off between conductivity and the AEM's lifetime in alkaline environment, it makes sense to treat them separately as AEM WE. However, the lifetime of AEM increased strongly over the last 10 years, and some electrode-related issues like oxidation of the ionomer binder at the anode can be mitigated by using KOH feed solutions. Therefore, AWE and AEM WE may get more similar in the future, and this review focuses on the developments in polymeric diaphragms, ion solvating membranes, and AEM.

Cycloaliphatic Quaternary Ammonium Functionalized Poly(oxindole biphenyl) Based Anion-Exchange Membranes for Water Electrolysis: Stability and Performance

Mechanically robust anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) with high conductivity and long-term alkali resistance are needed for water electrolysis application. In this work, aryl-ether free polyaromatics containing isatin moieties were prepared via super acid-catalyzed copolymerization, followed by functionalization with alkaline stable cyclic quaternary ammonium (QA) cationic groups, to afford high performance AEMs for application in water electrolysis. The incorporation of side functional cationic groups (pyrrolidinium and piperidinium) onto a polymer backbone via a flexible alkyl spacer aimed at conductivity and alkaline stability improvement. The effect of cation structure on the properties of prepared AEMs was thoroughly studied. Pyrrolidinium- and piperidinium-based AEMs showed similar electrolyte uptakes and no obvious phase separation, as revealed by SAXS and further supported by AFM and TEM data. In addition, these AEMs displayed high conductivity values (81. 5 and 120 mS cm-1 for pyrrolidinium- and piperidinium-based AEM, respectively, at 80 °C) and excellent alkaline stability after 1 month aging in 2M KOH at 80 °C. Especially, a pyrrolidinium-based AEM membrane preserved 87% of its initial conductivity value, while at the same time retaining its flexibility and mechanical robustness after storage in alkaline media (2M KOH) for 1 month at 80 °C. Based on 1H NMR data, the conductivity loss observed after the aging test is mainly related to the piperidinium degradation that took place, probably via ring-opening Hofmann elimination, alkyl spacer scission and nucleophilic substitution reactions as well. The synthesized AEMs were also tested in an alkaline water electrolysis cell. Piperidinium-based AEM showed superior performance compared to its pyrrolidinium analogue, owing to its higher conductivity as revealed by EIS data, further confirming the ex situ conductivity measurements.

Fluorinated poly(p-triphenyl piperidine) anion exchange membranes with robust dimensional stability for fuel cells

Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), which are more economical than proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), stand out in the context of the rapid development of renewable energy. Superacid-catalyzed ether-free aromatic polymers have recently received a lot of attention due to their exceptional performance, but their development has been hampered by the trade-off between the dimensional stability and ionic conductivity of anion exchange membranes (AEMs). Here, we introduced fluoroketones containing different numbers of fluorinated groups (x = 0, 3 and 6) in the main chain of p-terphenyl piperidine because of the favorable hydrophobic properties of fluorinated groups. The results show that fluorinated AEMs can enhance OH- conductivity by building more aggregated hydrophilic channels while ensuring dimensional stability. The PTF6-QAPTP AEM with more fluorinated groups has the most excellent performance at 80 °C with an OH- conductivity of 142.7 mS cm-1 and a swelling ratio (SR) of only 4.55 %. Additionally, it exhibits good alkali durability, with the OH- conductivity and quaternary ammonium (QA) cation retaining at 93.45% and 92.6%, respectively, after immersion in a 2 M NaOH solution at 80 °C for 1200 h. In addition, the power density of the PTF6-QAPTP based single cell reaches 849 mW cm-2 when the current density is 1600 mA cm-2. The PTF6-QAPTP based cell has a voltage retention of 88% after 80 h of stability testing at a constant current density of 300 mA cm-2 at 80 °C.

Porous Organic Polymers Containing Active Metal Centers for Suzuki-Miyaura Heterocoupling Reactions

A new generation of confined palladium(II) catalysts covalently attached inside of porous organic polymers (POPs) has been attained. The synthetic approach employed was straightforward, and there was no prerequisite for making any modification of the precursor polymer. First, POP-based catalytic supports were obtained by reacting one symmetric trifunctional aromatic monomer (1,3,5-triphenylbenzene) with two ketones having electron-withdrawing groups (4,5-diazafluoren-9-one, DAFO, and isatin) in superacidic media. The homopolymers and copolymers were made using stoichiometric ratios between the functional groups, and they were obtained with quantitative yields after the optimization of reaction conditions. Moreover, the number of chelating groups (bipyridine moieties) available to bind Pd(II) ions to the catalyst supports was modified using different DAFO/isatin ratios. The resulting amorphous polymers and copolymers showed high thermal stability, above 500 °C, and moderate-high specific surface areas (from 760 to 935 m² g^-1), with high microporosity contribution (from 64 to 77%). Next, POP-supported Pd(II) catalysts were obtained by simple immersion of the catalyst supports in a palladium(II) acetate solution, observing that the metal content was similar to that theoretically expected according to the amount of bipyridine groups present. The catalytic activity of these heterogeneous catalysts was explored for the synthesis of biphenyl and terphenyl compounds, via the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction using a green solvent (ethanol/water), low palladium loads, and aerobic conditions. The findings showed excellent catalytic activity with quantitative product yields. Additionally, the recyclability of the catalysts, by simply washing it with ethanol, was excellent, with a sp²-sp² coupling yield higher than 95% after five cycles of use. Finally, the feasibility of these catalysts to be employed in tangible organic reactions was assessed. Thus, the synthesis of a bulky compound, 4,4'-dimethoxy-5'-tert-butyl-m-terphenylene, which is a precursor of a thermal rearrangement monomer, was scaled-up to 2 g, with high conversion and 96% yield of the pure product.

Superelectrophiles are reactive species that often carry multiple positive charges. They have been useful in numerous synthetic methods and they often exhibit highly unusual reactivities. Recent advances in superelectrophile chemistry are discussed in this review.

Amphoteric-Side-Chain-Functionalized "Ether-Free" Poly(arylene piperidinium) Membrane for Advanced Redox Flow Battery

To solve the stability issue of cost-effective nonfluorinated membranes, an ether-free poly(arylene piperidinium) (PBPip)-based membrane is first applied in redox flow batteries (RFBs). For improved efficiencies of RFB, amphoteric side chains are introduced onto the PBPip. Without an ether bond in the polymer backbone, the membrane shows a good stability in a strong oxidation environment. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra exhibit no obvious changes over 30 days of oxidation test. Different from traditional blended amphoteric membranes, the amphoteric side chain allows both cation- and anion-exchange capacities to increase with grafting degree, which leads to a very high total ion-exchange capacity (IEC) (4.19 mmol g^-1). Outstanding ion-conduction ability (area resistance: 0.22 Ω cm²) comparable to Nafion 212 (0.24 Ω cm²) is consequently achieved. Ionic cross-linking structure between cationic and anionic groups results in a low swelling rate (13.9%). Combined with the repelling effect of positively charged piperidinium, a low VO²⁺ permeability (1.31 × 10^-8 cm² s^-1) is accomplished. On the basis of these good properties, the membrane exhibits excellent vanadium battery performances, especially at high current densities. The VE and EE both exceed 80% even at 200 mA cm^-2. The battery performances have no obvious reductions after 500 cycles. These results indicate that this work provides a new orientation to design the membrane for RFB.

Brønsted acid catalysed eco friendly synthesis of quaternary centred C-3 functionalized oxindole derivatives

A facile atom economic and eco friendly protocol for the synthesis of biologically important quaternary centered C-3 functionalized oxindole derivatives, with a novel nucleus, in high yields has been demonstrated.

Mechanistic aspects of superacid mediated condensation of polyphenols with ketones. Implications for polymer synthesis

A detailed computational study of possible reaction paths for methanesulfonic and triflic acid mediated polyhydroxyalkylation reaction between resorcinol and trifluoracetone accompanied by cyclodehydration to give 9H-xanthene containing polymers has been carried out at M06-2X/6-311+G level of theory. A cluster solvation model was used for the calculations. The calculations revealed that the most kinetically favorable reaction path involves the cyclodehydration occurring during the polymer forming step. In this case 9H-xanthene formation is promoted by the activated phenyl ring in Wheland intermediate assisting the aromatic nucleophilic substitution of OH group which leads to the cyclization. It has been demonstrated that the inability of methanesulfonic acid to catalyze the formation of 9H-xanthene containing polymers is due to the very high barrier of the rate limiting step of the polymer forming reaction and not the cyclodehydration process.
